Entrance Antiphon Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say rejoice. Indeed, the Lord is near. A Word on the Parish Mission (13-28 February 2016) A few people have asked the question, “Just what do we mean by the word ‘Mission’”? There are various ways of thinking about it, here are a few: •

a Mission is a time of spiritual renewal; with help from outside teams (in our case the Sion Community for Evangelism) we take stock of our spiritual lives and receive help to grow.

a Mission is a time to reach out to those who have given up the practice of the faith and to invite them to return.

a Mission is a time, a little bit like a holiday, a break from routine, an opportunity to experience new things - hear about different ways of prayer, hearing about how other people have discovered the power and joy of the Gospel, seeing services done in a different way - a time of spiritual refreshment.

There is a lot of prayer and preparation going on for our Mission and it is sure to be a special time of grace. We will soon have a Mission prayer card with our own parish mission prayer: please pray this prayer regularly. The Mission will be a time of blessing - let us do all we can to take full advantage of it. The Jubilee Year of Mercy The Holy Year announced by Pope Francis began on Tuesday 8 December and it was heartening to see how many people attended the two Masses we celebrated on that day. Jubilee of Mercy (continued): Pope Francis, echoed by Archbishop Peter, has asked us to give special emphasis to the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. Those familiar with the old Penny Catechism might remember some or all of these but for the rest of us... Largely taken from Matthew ch.25 (the parable of the sheep and the goats), the seven corporal works are: 1. Feed the hungry; 2. Give drink to the thirsty; 3. Clothe the naked; 4.Shelter the homeless; 5. Visit the sick; 6. Visit the imprisoned; 7. Bury the dead. The seven spiritual works are: 1. Convert the sinner; 2. Instruct the ignorant; 3.Counsel the doubtful; 4. Comfort the sorrowful; 5. Bear wrongs patiently; 6. Forgive injustice; 7. Pray for the living and the dead. From time to time, during the Jubilee Year, we will reflect on these aspects of our faith. Advent Devotions: Don’t forget the wonderful opportunity for prayer and song we have together this Sunday evening at 4pm. Our Carol Service followed by refreshments will be next Sunday (4th of Advent) also at 4pm. Thank You: Thanks to all who helped in any way with the Christmas Fayre last Saturday.
