seCond sunday in ordinary tiMe (Year C) 16/17 JANUARY 2016

Entrance Antiphon All the earth shall bow down before you, O God, and shall sing to you, shall sing to your name, O Most High! Peace Sunday - 17 January This year’s theme, chosen by Pope Francis, is: “Overcome indifference and win Peace.” He speaks very passionately about the dangers of indifference in “The Joy of the Gospel”; he describes how it is possible, especially for us in the affluent West, to grow accustomed to the many forms of suffering in our world today and to lose the will to help: “Almost without being aware of it, we end up being incapable of feeling compassion at the outcry of the poor, weeping for another’s pain, and feeling a need to help them, as though all this were someone else’s responsibility and not our own. The culture of prosperity deadens us; we are thrilled if the market offers us something new to purchase. In the meantime all those lives stunted for lack of opportunity seem a mere spectacle; they fail to move us” (Evangelii Gaudium, 54). Please give generously to the work of Pax Christi, the Catholic peace organisation which seeks to promote a culture of peace and international co-operation, campaigning for an end to war and the evils of the arms trade. Parish Mission - 13-28 February A colourful Mission prayer card has been produced and you are all invited to take one from the back of church. Those interested in getting involved with music for the Mission had a very productive meeting last Sunday. They will be meeting this Sunday at 4pm in the church to rehearse some hymns. Any singers and/or instrumentalists are welcome to come and join in.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity: this annual week of prayer runs from 1825 January. Sadly there is no provision for joint prayer in Herne Bay this year but please keep the intention in your prayers throughout the week. More on the Mission: There are still opportunities for any parishioners who would like to help with mission visiting. There will be a meeting in the parish room on Mon 18 January at 8pm to do some training for this vital aspect of the mission. Please note that Parish mission visitors will always accompany one of the Sion Visiting Team, they will not be going out on their own. Family Service: The Mission Team have suggested a Family Service on the middle Sunday of the Mission, i.e. 21st. Please look out for further communications about this event in which we hope to involve the children in a very special way.
