Fourth sunday in ordinary tiMe (Year C) 30/31 JANUARY 2016

Entrance Antiphon Save us, O Lord our God! And gather us from the nations, to give thanks to your holy name, and make it our glory to praise you. Parish Mission (13-28 Feb) Our Parish Mission begins in two weeks’ time... A Mission is a time to take a fresh look at our faith and it helps to have people from outside who can come and present the fundamental teachings of the faith in a new and, hopefully, inspiring way. It’s a bit like going on a retreat; only that the retreat is given to us where we are. The first week of the mission is given over to parish visiting. A team will be arriving on Saturday 13th and will be trying to get to as many of our parish addresses as they can by Friday 19th. The purpose of the visiting is to encourage us in our faith – the plan is to stay for no longer than 15 mins. The visitors will be going out in two’s. And the expectation is that these visits will be above all a prayerful experience. There will be prayer going on in the church all the time the visiting teams are out, praying for God’s blessings on all the encounters. On the weekend of 20/21 Feb there will be Young people’s event on the Saturday evening after Mass and there will be a Family Service on the Sunday afternoon at 3.30pm. During the second week there will be special evening services in church at 7pm, lasting no more than an hour. These services will not include Mass. The morning Masses in the parish for both weeks will include a brief reflection or a short teaching on prayer (continued on p.3).

Children’s Liturgy The children will remain in the church at the 9.30am Mass this week.

Adoration every weekday: One hour, from 8.30-9.30am, has been set aside for a particular intention (see table above). Those unable to make the hour each morning are encouraged to take time during the day to pray for these intentions.

More on the Mission : A celebratory parish social will conclude the Mission on Saturday 27th, complete with ceilidh band. Do keep the evening free. Our mission is being led by members of the Sion Community, a Catholic community of men and women, married and single, and also including two priests who are full time members. Their purpose is to go to parishes and schools, helping people to come to a deeper knowledge and love of the faith. The name “Sion” refers to Jerusalem where the Christian faith came into being. We are preparing leaflets which will give full details of the mission events. Prayer Volunteers needed: We are drawing up a prayer-rota to support the Parish Mission Visiting Teams. This will involve Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in the church while the visiting is going on during the first week of the Mission. The rota is on a table at the back of the church. Only the times shaded in blue are needed. Please put your initials in any time slot you would like to cover. More than one set of initials in any time slot is welcome. We hope to cover every time slot. Thank you for your support. Music Group: An enthusiastic group of people of all ages has been formed to provide music for the Mission. Practice this Sunday 4.30pm in the Retreat Hall. Lent is early this year: Ash Wednesday is 10 February (Easter is 27 March). The SVP coin card appeal: from next Sunday, fill in one of the six £1 coin shaped spaces each week of the six weeks of Lent. Parish Pastoral Council: Meets this week on Wednesday at 7pm. Equal Shares (Jan): 1st prize: £50 to I.Skerry #2; 2nd Prize £25: B.Gray #20 First Friday (5th): evening Mass at 7pm followed by prayers for healing. Goodbye: At the 11.15 Mass (Sun 31st) we will be saying a sad but fond farewell to Bunty Baker who for many years has been in charge of flower arranging in the parish. Bunty and Mike, her husband, are moving to Norfolk. To say that her service has been outstanding is to make a serious understatement! We shall raise a glass in her honour after Mass: please come and join us. Rotas: Cleaning Group A. Other rotas in the porch. The Collection for last week was £880.16 (of which £465 was from giftaided envelopes and £415.16 was loose collection). Thank you. 2nd Collection next week: to support the poorer parishes of the diocese.
