Friday 6th: St Maria Goretti, the young girl from a Passionist parish in Italy who was killed defending herself against the attack of a would-be rapist and died with words of forgiveness for him on her lips. Also the feast-day of our own Sr Maria. ( Wednesday 4 July is the anniversary of the opening of St George’s Cathedral in 1848. The opening celebrations were attended by both Blessed Dominic Barberi CP and Fr Ignatius Spencer CP – an interesting part of our “family history”.) Saturday July 7th: Feast of the Translation of Thomas a Becket: Mass will be celebrated in Canterbury Cathedral at 8.00pm by Bishop Nicholas Hudson. Entrance to the Cathedral by the South Door. BIBLE WEEKEND: We are indebted to David and Sarah Beresford and their daughter Mollie from the Catholic Bible School for the wonderful weekend they gave us last weekend. All who came were delighted with what they learned and the very pleasant experience of being together. The Parish Pastoral Council undertook all the planning and advertising, the Wednesday Lunch Club enlisted support e.g. from our Indian community for all the catering as well as preparing much of the food themselves. There were two excellent testimonies given by members of the parish about their own faith journey which encouraged and uplifted all who heard them. And the final session on the lawn in the Retreat garden, with a delicious barbecue, was something of a highlight as we were re-told the story of Jesus walking on the water and invited to experience something ourselves of what St Peter experienced. Families and single people enjoyed an afternoon in the sun and many said what a good venue we had!! A break during the presentation allowed us to get up to date with England v. Panama…. But by far the most important focus was what we saw with our own eyes as the miracle of Walking on Water was brought alive for us. There is a Bible School session in Richmond parish this weekend – we keep them in our prayers. FR PATRICK CP goes on holiday on Tuesday and will be back towards the end of July. We trust he will enjoy his well-earned rest!!
