FEAST DAYS THIS WEEK: Monday 15th Oct. St Teresa of Jesus. Weds. 17th Oct. St. Ignatius of Antioch. Thurs. 18th Oct. St. Luke, Evangelist. Friday 19th Oct. St. Paul of the Cross Founder of the Passionists, a saint with a passionate desire to see the English nation on fire with the faith. This Sunday, Pope Francis will canonise seven saints in St Peter’s Square. They include two who will be familiar to many of us: Blessed Pope Paul VI, the Pope who succeeded Pope St John XXIII and steered the Second Vatican Council through to its conclusion . Many wonderful documents originate from his time as Pope: Evangelii Nuntiandi (On Proclaiming the Gospel); Populorum Progression (On the Progress of Peoples); To Honour Mary; but he will always be remembered for his encyclical on the regulation of birth. The other name is that of Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador, who stood up for the poor and oppressed and opposed the military dictatorship of his country; he was killed by the military whilst celebrating Mass. St Thomas of Canterbury parish have relics of Saint Oscar, including one of his albs. There is a strong link between St Thomas a Becket and St Oscar, both Archbishops murdered for standing up for the truth. FIRST HOLY COMMUNION PROGRAMME: for children in Year 4 and upwards . Please hand names in as soon as possible with address, phone/email details and date of birth. Our programme will begin in October. (Please note that it is for Year 4 + children . We will be closing the list this weekend. THE APOSTOLATE OF ADORATION: As a parish we already have several opportunities for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament each week and now there is something new in the air. Several of us went to a meeting early in the summer to hear about The Apostolate of Adoration which has already made great strides in Ireland. Basically it asks for members of the parish to commit one hour per week to praying before the Blessed Sacrament for the intentions of the parish and the wider world. Archbishop Peter is fully behind this initiative

and several parishes in the diocese have already taken it on. It is fully lay-led and there are powerful testimonies from Ireland and elsewhere as to the fruits it brings. There will be a presentation about this at all Masses on the weekend of 20-21 October. Please keep this initiative in your prayers. PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL: among many items discussed at our meeting on October 10th were: setting up a new parish database to improve communications….. a gardening group to look after the grotto area….developing relations with the Catholic Club including a link-up for internet access in the Retreat Hall… parish fundraising: Christmas Fayre December 1st….Let’s Talk session: Monday November 19th Walsingham Pilgrimage October 7th: Sincere thanks to Althea Walker for organising the day and the transport: it was a great blessing to all who took part.
