Humanity AN IDEOLOGY OR A BELONGING?

By Laurence Ajaka Photography by Tom Manning

According to Wikipedia, a news article discusses current or recent news of either general interest (i.e. daily newspapers) or of a specific topic (i.e. political or trade news magazines, club newsletters, or technology news websites). A news article can include accounts of eyewitnesses to the happening event. It can contain photographs, accounts, statistics, graphs, recollections, interviews, polls, debates on the topic, etc. Headlines can be used to focus the reader’s attention on a particular (or main) part of the article. The writer can also give facts and detailed information following answers to general questions like who, what, when, where, why and how.Humanity is a concept that the entire world, from all

races and places, can agree upon. The world has thousands of religions and/or belief systems that meet and clash on so many levels that left a bloody trail of wars and conflict all over the pages of history. But even during the fiercest battles, glimpses of humanity are still there in sparing and enemy and even giving the respect of an honorary death. That is because humanity is a word that goes beyond any religion, nation or nationality uniting billions from all four corners of the earth to the extent some claim their religions to be humanitarian ones despite that contradiction with religion's typical out worldly ideologies.

This precious focal point of consent that even unites the non-believers can be the meeting place where we all come together as one and unite for a common purpose. For who are those that refuses to be human? Who hears about humanity and claims his religion isn't humanitarian or that their prophet is anything but human? Even those with no clear concept of what humanity truly is refuse to be described in any other terms.

So what is humanity in its naked unadulterated truth? All the thoughts and ideas are not humanitarian unless they can be applied to all, in any place of time, in a spirit of equality. All the logical arguments are not humanitarian unless they can be readily accepted, on a mental and emotional level, to all without compromising the respect, health, freedom, and happiness of any person.

Aside from the logical aspect, the wisdom brought by the prophets makes up the moral foundation for positive interactions between people that ultimately lead to the greater good and even the continuity of the species. It can also be the line of defense against the hypocritical false dealers of knowledge who use religion as a means to attract followers to their cause and mind

control them for political and financial gains. Understanding religion from an intellectual perspective will immunize followers by planting their feet firmly into reality and cementing wisdom as a means for viewing and participating in life. Another central factor is having a comprehensive knowledge of the history of human rights and all the resulting in international treaties that serve as international standards to guarantee the life and livelihood of every person on earth. These treaties are the weapon to be used to stand up to the atrocious practices being practiced by many of the oppressed nations where mass murders and deprivation is done for the gratification and profit of an elite group of rulers, mafias and even dominating global companies. Unless the oppressed are aware of their rights, there can never be a real and lasting change.

All of the above start at home with proper parenting. Each child must be provided with the minimum necessities for a sustainable personal identity achieved through communication, freedom, openness to both heritage and modern ideas and dignity regardless of the gender. Discrimination between genders will empower one over the other and disturb the harmony and balance needed for a literate and confident generation. What has been molded properly within the bosom of the family will not be unbent in school or daily life. If a person is bred for knowledge, every degree will only serve to deepen the understanding of life in general, and the major studied in particular. However, if a person is bred for self-righteousness and dishonesty, all knowledge gained will just represent these undesirable qualities in a polished fashion. Humanity is the antithesis of selfishness and bigotry against others. It is belonging to another human being as patriotism is belonging to a nation. Hatred and hostility will never intercept with humanity as these antagonistic feelings have no place in the fabric of humanity. The vision of a humanistic society is when a man is aware of the choices made and lives to reflect the higher being in all the dealings of life and other human beings. This cannot come by without complete equality with no discrimination for gender, religious, national or ethnic bases. Ultimately, humanity is a philosophical stand and cannot be brought forth without a philosophical point of view and unwavering dedication to this cause. Base and animalistic desires cannot be allowed to cloud any of the interactions with self and other fellow human beings. And as such, the focal point of humanitarianism so to speak is equality where the “me exists in no other context outside of absolute equity. Humanity cannot be summarized with some acts and spontaneous expressions that each individual perceives as humanitarian. It has to be painstakingly built from a logical basis starting from the very meaning of the root of the world to the historical implications and the harmony between theory and reality. Such an upheaval is collaboration between a group of thinkers and intellectuals for the sake of the entire human race on a local and global level.

other materials including sand, clay, paper, plaster, gold leaf as well as objects. Painting is a mode of creative expression, and the forms are numerous. Drawing, gesture, composition, narration, or abstraction, among other aesthetic modes, may serve to manifest the expressive and conceptual intention of the practitioner. Paintings can be naturalistic and representational, photographic, abstract, be loaded with narrative content, symbolistic , emotive, or be political in nature.Based on the above, humanity can be summed as belong to man as in each person is me and he is the other me to everyone else. But who is this elusive man that we all have to be? That cannot be attained unless there is a conscious realization of the human core and essence. Humanity was never belonging to the ideology of this leader or that. Let it be known that this sense of belonging doesn’t need severing previous ties to the family, community, nationality, religion, etc. All the above must ultimately coincide with the values of humanity. It is the bond that protects each and every human being. It would lead to the entire globe being encompassed within the humanitarian family.

MIND OVER MATTER SEIZE YOUR DESTINY Dr. Toufic Ajaka

Our life is in our control, everything we do is a result of the thoughts we have been thinking of; our reality will change as soon as we start changing our thoughts and feelings. After all, it’s only a matter of viewpoint. Understanding this will allow us to create a balanced, happy and healthy life. So instead of concentrating all our energy on the world’s complications we must focus our energy on love, education, faith and goodwill. Therefore benefit from what is called: the law of attraction, its description, its mechanisms and its approach. This idea has been existent from ancient times and people have been applying it repetitively, most of the time intuitively. It can be found in antique texts through all the eras and almost in every religion. Babylonians with their apprehending and use of the rules of the Cosmos, they became one of the richest nations of antiquity. They are also famous for building the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. So by this, we understand that the law of attraction is the law that shapes the overall order in the Cosmos, each instant of our existence, and

each single event we are involved in. It doesn’t matter who you are, this law is founding your absolute life experience, and this supreme principle is achieved through your beliefs. You are the one who directs the law into execution, and you do it through your beliefs. When you concentrate your thoughts on something you need, and you embrace it, you are in that instant seeking what you want with the strongest power in the world. One must understand that the law of attraction doesn’t compute with words of negation for our thoughts convert into real events. That is why, one must learn how to control his feelings first, in order to be prepared to apply this law. You can start by asking yourself how you are feeling; because when you’re upset you tend to attract bad things. When you‘re elated, you are sturdily attracting more good things to you. The law of attraction helps you achieve your goals by following these three steps: ask, believe and receive. Asking consists of demanding the Universe what you want and clarifying your thoughts.

As for the process of believing, it involves faking, verbalizing, and visualizing as though you have already obtained what you’ve asked for. And finally, receiving consists of feeling the way you will feel once your desire has manifested.

For example in order to obtain better grades, don’t focus on the bad grades you had; instead, focus on the high grades you want to reach. Also, one should keep in mind that the law of attraction requires training, and most importantly patience. Feelings and emotions are hard to control but with enough practice and resignation they can be controlled in order to be used for your own benefit. The law of attraction can be used for acquiring any need, some of the most important field of application are: money, relationships and health. First of all, in order to attract more money concentrate on prosperity, for it is impossible to gain what you want if you keep directing your thoughts on what you don’t have. Look at everything you desire and tell yourself that you can afford and that you will buy it. This way you will start thinking more positively about money and start the process of attraction. As for having successful relationships: you have to make sure your feelings, words, doings, actions don’t oppose your desires. Your job is to fill yourself with yourself: take care of yourself, love and respect yourself; this way you will attract people who love and

respect you as equally as you do. Finally we arrive at the secret to health. The placebo effect is an example of the law of attraction applied nowadays in medicine. When a patient believes the tablet is a treatment, he receives what he believes and is cured. Also laughter and positive thinking attract joy, release negativity and lead to miraculous cures. In conclusion, the law of attraction is the law of the Universe. It is objective and it does not consider good things or bad things, it is obtaining your feelings and returning them back into your life experience. The law of attraction simply offers you everything you think about. Allowing you to hold more control over your life and to be able to shape the life you have always wished for.

THE LEBANESE WEDDING

The Ultimate Theatrical Production !

DR. LAURENCE AJAKA

It's been a few years since I've scaled back on attending weddings and only go when there isn't any good reason to cry off. The Lebanese wedding is the ultimate theatrical production that rivals even the stages of Broadway. The splendid day starts at 8 a.m. in the morning when the bride is woken up to undergo the 6-hour transformation that turns her from plain Jane to the belle of the ball. No effort or artificial additives are spared for this monumental day in the aim of making the bride have zero resemblance to herself. Two tons of artificial hair extensions, a truckload of makeup, fake nails a mile long and a dress-heavy enough to topple a bulldozer later and the bride emerges. Meanwhile, the groom is also undergoing a transformation. He is plucked and stuffed because it's the era of the metrosexual man and he must conform. After that, it's time for the pictures. No Lebanese wedding is complete without a professional shoot where the bride and groom pose together in a manner so ridiculous that it's a miracle none of them bursts into fits of laughter. And naturally, the shoot takes place in the same place

every other one did. For example, in Beirut, it has to be in Downtown. It doesn't matter if the bride's (and groom's) make up is running down from the heat or being smudged by the rain, it's the only place permissible to have pictures taken. This is the part where my heart goes out to any bride who has a big dress on. She has to stay for hours in a death trap threating to swallow her up while she waits for the ceremony to start. And let's not forget the tricky part of going to the bathroom. Then it's time for the grand entrance which is only done in a ridiculously fancy foreign car, horse drawn carriage and my personal favorite the boat. Should the bride and groom survive that without falling or becoming dirty, it's sword time! They have to grin and act cool while walking in a potential decapitation as they pass under swords twirling at blinding speeds. By then, everyone is in a frenzy to take pictures. Everything needs to be documented to the last detail because this wedding will be the only thing to save humanity in a thousand years or so it seems from the sheer number of pictures being taken. Everyone is busy capturing the moment instead of living it. It all has to be uploaded to social media platforms to gross the highest number of likes and shares possible. This, however, doesn't slow down the gossiping mongrels that will criticize everything f

rom the food being served to the strap on the bride's shoes. So basically, it's the couple paying thousands upon thousands of dollars to entertain and feed people who will tear them apart. And after that physical and emotional marathon, the couple is expected to retire to the most magical night of their lives and have it done and get some sleep before the mothers come knocking at 8 next morning with “knefeh”. And no it has to be “knefeh “ and nothing else because the daughter is fertile enough or the groom is potent enough (depends on which mother you ask) to have gotten the first heir to the throne on the way. Weddings used to be honest and simple. The joy of the couple and the invitees was genuine. Today, even the smiles are not sincere. So is it any wonder I cringe whenever someone slips a wedding invitation in my hand? I'd rather get my mix of drama and action in bed watching the latest superhero movie and eating popcorn.

THE TEXTING GI A NT ! By Edy Hourany

WhatsApp is perhaps the most widespread instant messaging smartphone application in the world. The project started small when two former Yahoo employees Jan Koum and Brian Acton left their jobs to pursue a minimalistic project aimed at replacing SMS and facilitating communication. What started as a 50 employee in a single office in Mountain View grew into one of the most successful technological business ventures. Perhaps the most distinctive facets about is their unique business model that refuses any form of advertising on the applications because of the firm belief that the application must be beneficial for the user and not the advertiser, something almost unheard of for a free application. It was made available in all formats such as iOS, Android, Windows Phones, Symbian, and Blackberry. Despite the fierce competition from similar applications (Line, Viber, Facebook Messenger), WhatsApp has no marketing plan to advertise their presence and rely instead on the quality of their product and user assessment. This unconventional business model enticed many of the tech big ballers to attempt buying out WhatsApp. Rumors surfaced that Google offered 10 billion dollars, and it drove Facebook to offer 4 billion in cash and another 15 in shares for a whopping total of 19 billion dollars. This might seem excessive, but the 1 billion plus WhatsApp users are an important database that would make any tech giant drool. What makes WhatsApp so successful? Texting is by far the most utilized mode of communication in the personal and professional worlds. Instant messaging (IM) allows users to exchange information almost immediately in a dependable and efficient manner. You can also save all the chat in one place for any future reference.

WhatsApp application interfaces with the organization on the web, and both checks a specific client's character, call verification and sends data between clients. When you start up your application, called an IM client, it tries to contact to WhatsApp IM server. The IM server checks your username and secret key and afterward logs you in. At this point, your username is your telephone number and the watchword is auto created utilizing particular and special information from your device. The application provides you with a list of all contacts that are also using WhatsApp. It also provides you with a status update to know whether they are available or not for contact. When you text your contact, the text goes from your WhatsApp client application to the WhatsApp server to which you're associated. The message then ventures specifically to your mate and a notice appears on his screen with the message you sent. As you proceed with your discussion, the messages do a reversal and forward between the client and the servers with a very short delay. Let’s assume you need to send a text to your contact. Your IM client basically asks the IM server where your contact is situated on the web and afterward, helps your mobile to make an immediate association with your contact’s mobile. The reason an immediate connection is made is because it is more proficient than attempting to send each record through servers and means the IM organizations don't need to use as much web data transfer capacity. Texts are little in terms of size while documents like motion pictures and sound can be substantial. By and large, an entire month of Instant Messaging web activity consumes less than 1 MB. Subsequently, it's no big surprise Instant Messaging deals with both moderate and quick internet connection.

A SHOT IN THE DARK DR. LAURENCE AJAKA

Rumor had it that the Minister of Education decided to shave off 5 weeks off the school year in the latest attempts at reforming the educational system that has been in the making for decades. The students of Lebanon rejoiced while the educators were surprised to hear the news, and are in a panic about what the fate of the school year will turn out to be. In the end, it all turned out to be a rumor, but what would have happened if it hadn’t been? Advocates of the decision are very clear about their aim to improve the overall learning process, and pronounced it as just one step in the upcoming reshaping of the educational system of Lebanon. The shortening also necessitated deleting enough material out of the curricula to accommodate the time shift, and the chapters being taken out were labeled as “outdated” and “repetitive”. All the above come as part of the initiative to make students happier and more involved in the learning process. Supporters claim they want to import some of the more sophisticated teaching techniques in attempts of attaining the standards applied in the best international educational systems. The model being considered is the Finnish one where students only study 4 hours a day yet score very high on almost any international educational list. This decision was met with cautious skepticism from some who fear this is just a shot in the dark. While there aren’t any real objections about lessening the number of school hours, there is no indication this might actually help. Opponents argue that instead of cutting hours, why not get rid of the unnecessary chapters and use that time to work on the urgently needed skills? Any cut will require a shift in the delivery and technique used throughout the year, yet the decision came devoid of the help educators badly need to in turn aid their students.

Another objection is the differences such alterations will create between the public and private schools. While it’s been said that this and any future change apply equally to both, there is no guarantee that this will actually happen admits the chaos in the country. Public schools are renowned for applying their own curricula and paying little heed to what the government says. But perhaps the most concerning is the feasibility of inducing a real shift. It will require an upheaval in the teaching techniques, curricula, and equipment used in all schools. How will that affect students that have spent years thinking and working in a certain manner? Just how ready are they to have such a radical change thrown at them? Wouldn’t it have been more beneficial if this transformation had clear bases and proper planning before implementation? Shouldn’t it have begun at preschool to mold future students as needed instead of having those who are an old struggle to keep up? Any change is more than welcome. Lebanon’s greatest import is sadly its educated youth because of the country’s dire economic circumstances, so we need to maintain and develop the educational sector. But for once, let it not be a chaotic mishmash of poorly thought out and rashly executed plans.

The Aftermath

DR. LAURENCE AJAKA

We call ourselves modern and evolved, but how can we claim such noble traits when our humanity has gone and died? What other explanation would account for the desensitization witnessed regarding the Syrian refugee crisis? The world is having a Byzantine debate about the whens and hows when there are millions dying and suffering. The Syrian civil war is a bloody red entry in the books of history. Over the course of only a few years, hundreds of thousands have died and millions of others were brutally chased out of their homes and native lands. The powers that be watched the tragedy unfold; puppet masters thought they could reshape this ancient land as they will. Today, the puppets have long slashed their strings with bloody swords and are running on a berserker rage in an attempt to win it all or burn it to the ground. In a sense, it's easy to wage war when you aren't exposed to its ugly aftermath. The real tragedy of war starts when the smoke clears. From beneath the dead bodies and debris are the haunted eyes of the people who just witnessed scenes out from Dante's Inferno. Those capable of fleeing will leave it all behind and risk a hazardous journey to find some sort of safety. Instead of finding safe haven and acceptance, they are herded like sheep and thrust into refugee camps devoid of the basic life requirements. The paper-thin tents do not keep the wailing winds or the scorching heat at bay. They are prone to snakes, rodents and insects. The once proud people are brought down to their knees fleeing from the certain death to die a thousand times every day. Their demands fall on deaf ears and they are looked upon as beggars and vanguards.

Have you ever seen a man stripping away his pride and begging for food because he cannot bear the pleas of his starving children? Have you ever witnessed a woman selling her body and crawling into oblivion as she is groped and raped by many? Have you ever had to go to sleep cold and miserable with an aching hunger for something beyond food gnawing at your insides? It's easy to claim virtues like pride and chastity when we are safe and secure, but how noble are we when we are stripped bare? War never has any winners no matter whose banner stands till the end. Millions have been stranded all over the globe for no fault of their own. They are paying the ultimate price for a war they had no hand in orchestrating. “Why don't presidents fight the wars? Why do they always send the poor? Some things are meant to be random fits of destruction devoid of reason or justice.

WHO ARE WE DR. ZEINA ZEIDAN MAALOULE

Allow us to introduce ourselves! We are the generation of walking to and back from school all the nine months come hail or heat; the one that had cover to cover an entire curricula without the luxury of private tutoring. We wrote the paragraph 10 times until we perfected it and spent our days solving problems on the chalkboard, the one of posts, activities, theater, sports and school field trips. We are the generation that wasn't broken by the teacher's staff or the family crises; the one whose tears fell for our mothers only and never for the nannies. We are the generation without cell phones; the one that never complained from too much school work or the number of books we had to slug around. We are the generation that didn't have a mother, father, sister or brother doing our homework for us; the one that passed without incentives to excel. We are the generation that kissed the holy books before and after closing them; the one that turned an upturned shoe and took the crust of bread from the floor to set it aside.

We are the generation that walked the dark roads with no fear in our hearts; the one that witnessed the emergence of the shower heads and the transformation of the phones from dial to swipe. We are the generation that took the road by storm uncaring of any robbers or traitors coming our way; the one that slept when the lights were off. We are the generation that laughed, talked and counted all the stars in the sky; the one that flew just by flapping our hands in the breeze. We are the generation that revered our parents, teachers and those around us; the one that was taught forgiveness for minor discretions and words of anger. We are the generation that respected our seventh neighbor; the one that shared our meager allowance, food, and secrets with our best friends. We are the blessed ones.

DOES

THE

TOOTHFAIRY

EXIST DR. RANDA SALIBA CHIDIAC

Just when you think you finally got the hand of parenting, your child asks you a question that knocks you sideway. I took a decision long ago to never lie to my child, so I was in a conundrum when he asked me whether the Tooth Fairy is real or not. At four years old, is it right that I deprive him of the magic of childhood so soon? Fairytale characters are more important than most parents think. They are a safety net and a source of comfort for children. When Christmas comes around, they are confident that Santa Clause will be there to bring them presents. The Easter Bunny will hop in with all the chocolate their heart's desire. They are comforting and reassuring pillars that paint their little worlds in a brilliant crescendo of colors and music as they grow into adults and realize just how turbulent life can be sometimes. More often than we think, knowing the Tooth Fairy is visiting is the only solace in being ridiculed because of a gap tooth.

Most psychologists recommend being honest about everything especially these imaginary figures so as to not create a trust crisis between them. Let's be honest here, how many children lost faith in their parents when they knew Santa wasn't real? Sure there is the initial acute disappointment and tears, but a few days, if not hours, later they tend to forget it. Genuine shock only occurs if the child is already feeling unloved and insecure. Is it really so bad if Santa turned out to be the dad and the Tooth Fairy mom? Children are emotionally acute enough to realize when something is done out of love, and their little hearts are not practiced in the ways of malice and hate. This honesty trend seems to be beneficial to the parents rather than the children. It's easier to just blurt out the truth than to actually make the effort to uphold the dream. In most cases, parents are smart enough to circumnavigate answering should they want to. The years do flash in a blink of an eye, and soon enough the outside world will come calling. Should we rob them so early or should we keep them a while longer to ensure they are certain they are unconditionally loved and accepted?

False Angels on the Clock

DR LAURENCE AJAKA

When someone is seriously ill, their morale can be the difference between life and death. Some believe that each patient should be well-informed about their disease to properly interact with it. This might not be applicable in our countries. In the Western world, children are groomed to be tough and realistic. It's totally different in our societies because we grow up very close to our parents. They are a constant presence in our lives, and they teach us to be emotional and dependent on the immediate and extended family. It's true that doctors are expected to inform the patients with every last detail pertaining their disease, but are they up to snuff? Doctors in the Western world stay hours with their patients and delicately explain the condition offering advice and emotional support. Consultations here last 10 minutes as an average which is not even enough time to break the ice let alone breaking such devastating news. Any patient

would gladly pay the required fee if they were made to feel valued and safe. But here physicians think of themselves in almost godly terms when they are just the tool by which God helps his creatures. Where is the humanity? How is it acceptable to ignore the patient's feelings and just dump the news in the coldest most clinical manner? No one is claiming that keeping a patient ignorant is wise especially in the day and age we live in, however, do it with compassion. Isn't it enough that the patient is already tiptoeing on the brink of death? Is it really necessary to push him/her over the edge? Doctors need to reconsider their ethics and the way they interact with the patients in a purely commercial sense. Compassion has always been a vital part of being a physician, so let's bring it back.

Doctors need to dial down on the ego. Society has raised their status to the point they are overwhelmed with their sense of entitlement. What were once angels are now the bearers of bad news. There must be a reason why our medical services are witnessing a downhill progression; physicians' attitude and calculated monetary approach is the reason why Lebanon is losing its status as an important provider of medical services.

WHEN SHOPPING BECOMES AN ADDICTION

DR. RANDA SALIBA CHIDIAC

When shopping becomes the only means by which a person feels good, it becomes a real addiction. This is not something restricted to rich people who might be able to afford it as normal people are amounting enormous debts to buy luxurious and trendy merchandise. Compulsive buying disorder may be common nowadays; it is a form of uncontrollable and avoidable, but progressive, destructive behavior that masks deeper issues regarding self-esteem and other psychological conditions. Most people have some degree of shopping addiction because we do so when bored, tired, upset or bored. For some, it defeats or at least circumvents boredom and

items we have no use of or desire to use after purchase. So how do we help shopaholics? It is not very easy because we live in a very consumer-oriented world makes consumption an exercise in hope of where individuals are constantly being bombarded changing the status quo.
