In addition to a few record highs, a giant haboob knocked out power to more than 10,000 people. Haboobs are fun to say and cool to watch, but once you start messing with my electricity, we’ve got a problem.
Seventeen days in the triple digits plus your run-of-the-mill neighborhood flooding. Overall, a pretty disappointing showing in terms of monsoon activity. It doesn’t feel like the monsoon unless someone’s getting rescued by a helicopter off the top of his or her car. I guess we kept the stupid motorists to a minimum last year, so that’s something.
Hailstorms, heavy winds, lightning, and rain swept through town. The result? Street closures, downed trees, and collapsed structures. And a few golfers got their games wrecked, as well. Those green fees ain’t cheap!

November
December
Shake, rattle, and cough. Yes, that was an earthquake. In Phoenix. At a healthy 4.1 we’re all proud to see the 85085 representing on the Richter Scale. Y’know those jokes about California breaking off into the sea and leaving us with beachfront property? New Mexico is now making those same jokes about Arizona. Might be time for earthquake insurance. And if that weren’t enough, we spent the better part of a week in early November waiting for an 8-acre mulch fire to finally burn itself out. The skies were hazy with smoke and every breath smelled like a campfire, but we survived.
If you’re reading this then nothing out of the ordinary happened in December and we all had a fantastic New Year’s Eve and the world didn’t end. Here’s to a terrific 2016, full of high-pressure zones, low-pressure zones, dew points and a big ol’ wet El Nino. Cheers!

A Yoga Journey
The Practice
Saunders was drawn to yoga as she was approaching the age of 50. At the time, she needed surgery for three back conditions: spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, and herniated discs. “I was not only stressed, but my back was a mess. Walking was painful and my leg and foot were numb,” says Saunders, who instead of having surgery tried yoga as a last-ditch effort to ease her pain. She turned to well known yoga instructor Sumit Banerjee, who turned her on to hot yoga. While not a quick fix, Saunders’ dedication and regular participation in his classes eased her pain and provided much-needed stress relief. “It was hard work and I listened to my body, taking breaks when needed. Sumit motivated and encouraged me but never pushed me beyond my limits. My back issues resolved themselves quickly and I lost weight and reduced my stress level,” explains Saunders. “Oddly enough, 15 years later, I injured my back and when the doctors saw my MRI, they were amazed I was not incapacitated years ago because my L4-5 disc was gone. Evidently, years of dedicated yoga practice strengthened my back and core muscles, delaying my surgery for years.” Meanwhile, Russell turned toward yoga to eliminate stress generated by a demanding job. “As I sat in that cubical, I found myself turning to yoga as my happy place. On my mat was where I felt peace and relief, focus and energy,” she says. “I stumbled across a Sumits yoga studio and as I walked into my first class, I didn’t even realize it was going to be hot yoga. Talk about an unexpected surprise, but I loved it!” Russell was instantly hooked and she decided to pursue a career in yoga.
Sumits Happy Valley offers yoga classes every day of the week. The classes are designed for all levels and are welcoming and open to anyone regardless of age or body type. “We offer a style and focus of yoga that is truly for just about everybody,” says Saunders. The classes are performed in a heated room to help encourage muscles to become more pliable, to increase blood flow, and help the body flush out toxins. The studio’s heating system is state-of-the-art and allows instructors to calibrate the environment to an ideal class temperature. “For the new person, it is going to be about getting used to the heat and humidity, while learning the yoga poses. For the seasoned yogi, it is about what their particular focus or goal is at the time; it may be to allow the heat to help them move deeper in their poses and stretches or to truly lose themselves in a moving mediation and the comfort in learning the sequence and not having to guess what’s coming next,” says Russell. Each class ends with a cool, refreshing lavender-scented cloth lightly placed on a practitioner’s face. After an invigorating class, yogis can then clean up in the studio’s facilities, which include five showers—three for women and two for men. Russell and Saunders are enjoying working together and focusing on their clients, many of whom are dealing with the same stress and pain that the owners of Sumits Yoga Happy Valley experienced before yoga became an integral part of their lives. For this reason, the two Angelas try to give back to the community as much as possible. “This year, we’re supporting St. Mary’s Food Bank by offering some donation-based classes. We also donate class packages to local schools like Norterra Canyon Elementary School and to churches that raffle them off to raise funds,” explain the duo, each of whom wants to spread the word about the amazing benefits of yoga.

Ready to try your first
hot yoga class? Be prepared! HYDRATE You’ll sweat, a lot! Drink ample amounts of water before, during, and after class to aid in toxin release. AVOID LARGE MEALS PRIOR TO CLASS Nix heavy meals about two hours before class. Not only will you be able to go more deeply into each posture, you’ll avoid hurling your lunch. BRING YOUR OWN TOWEL AND MAT, AND DRESS APPROPRIATELY Wear breathable performance fabrics that whisk sweat away from your body. Brands like Lululemon Athletica, Lucy, and Athleta make great hot yoga wear. Also, bring your own mat and a towel. It’s going to be hot and humid in class and there’s no sense (or sanitariness) in using communal items. CALM DOWN There’s no need to rush. Arrive 15 minutes early to sign in and discuss any health issues with your instructor. Your instructor needs to be aware of any aches, pains, or medical conditions present so he or she can offer modifications based on your conditions.

Fresh Traditions
Start a fresh year off with these suggestions to create a stronger family bond. By Natasha Daniels
I’M NOT SURE why we wait for a new calendar year to start new diets, habits, and routines. Maybe it’s the feeling of a fresh start the new year brings. Whatever it is, it seems now is as good a time as any
to initiate some family traditions. Family traditions help build a strong feeling of connectedness. To jump-start your 2016, here are four of my favorite family traditions:
1. Date Day with the Kids
2. Dinner Conversation Starters
Whether you have one child or a dozen, children crave one-on-one attention from their parents. I love the idea of taking children out for alone time. Even if you spend lots of time with your children, devoting a special time and naming it (e.g., “Mommy and Me Time,” etc.) will feel special. Date days can be as simple as you want them to be. The key is to make a new tradition practical, so it is easy to maintain and keep for years to come. My husband and I devote one weekend day a month to take our children out individually. Each child is taken out for about an hour or two by one parent. We rotate which child goes with which parent. The kids love it and constantly ask when the next date will be.
With all the hustle and bustle of our hectic schedules, dinner might be the only time your family is actually all together. Make mealtime count. I know I feel like I spend more time preparing a meal than it takes for everyone to eat it. Slow the family down by coming up with dinner conversation routines. A simple dinner routine might be taking turns giving the high and low of each person’s day. Doing this on a regular basis can give you insight into what is going on in everybody’s lives. I also recommend that parents pipe in with their high and low for the day, without burdening your children with too many stressful details. This helps kids realize that parents also have daily successes and challenges and may provide a talking point on how to handle those difficulties. For more formal dinner traditions, you can make a jar of dinner questions. These questions can be thought-provoking or silly. Often these types of questions stimulate further discussion and get you to understand each other on a deeper level. For some dinner question ideas you can visit anxioustoddlers.com/family-dinner.
