STEPS FOR PROTECTING YOUR PLANTS • Cover plants before sunset to capture the day’s heat. • Leave the coverings on all night and well into the next day. • Remove the coverings once temperatures return to safe levels for your plants. • Allow your plants to soak up the sunlight for awhile, allowing the soil to heat up again.

• Repeat the process whenever the nighttime forecast calls for freezing temps.

EVERYONE’S HEARD THAT old joke: “If you don’t like the weather in (insert your city), just wait 10 minutes.” Well, that doesn’t really apply in Phoenix—except during the winter. One minute you’re power-walking in shorts and a T-shirt, and the next minute you’re on the couch wrapped in a Snuggie, gripping a mug of Lemon Zinger with two hands. But you know who isn’t wrapped in a Snuggie? Your plants. And bushes. And shrubs. And trees. They’re outside silently screaming because they know nighttime is approaching and you haven’t covered them up. This is when you start calculating how much effort it would take to protect your plants (versus how much time and money you’d spend replacing your soon-to-be-frozen greenery). This ain’t the Circle of Life—it’s just being lazy. Come on, don’t be a plant killer. A few simple steps will keep your yard green and healthy. And chances are you’ve already got the materials you need in your house right now. Spend a little time in the yard tucking in those plants, and you’ll be back on your couch watching House of Cards in no time. While the average low February temperature for Phoenix is 49, the record low is 28— well below the point where plants sustain damage. To prepare your plants for a freeze (temperatures dropping below 32 degrees), you’ll need to cover them at night. Sheets and blankets work best, but you can also use towels, cardboard, or paper. Plastic is somewhat less effective, but if it’s all you’ve got, go for it. The idea is to cover the plants the way you’d cover your dining room table with a tablecloth that reaches all the way to the floor. Create a cave that faces the ground. This lets the ground heat rise up into your “blanket cave” after the sun goes down while sheltering the plants from the falling cold air. It’s an easy fix to make sure your plants stay warm and protected throughout the night. Of course, the first step in protecting your plants is to—wait for it—check the weather report. This former weathergirl endorses that strategy wholeheartedly. If the forecast calls for freeze or frost warnings, then break out the blankets and cover that greenery. Come spring, your yard will look fantastic. And your plants will thank you for it. Now, let’s get back to House of Cards.

Tips for Defining Your Market Do your research to figure out who your ideal client is. By Matthew Toren

ONE OF THE biggest mistakes that business owners make when starting out is skipping over market research. Many well-intentioned entrepreneurs fall in love with their business or idea, and in their excitement to get started, they simply pass over doing real market research. Whether it’s service based or product based, you need to do your research to figure out who your ideal client is. Don’t skip this

important step that will give you a vital snapshot of the feasibility of your idea to help clients. After all, if you’re going into business, or even if you’re already in business, you should be doing it to serve the needs or solve a problem for people. The great thing about taking the time to do your research is that while you’re in business to serve, you’ll end up seeing a direct correlation to sales when what you provide helps people.

Here are tips for how you can get started defining your market. Define Your Industry What industry are you getting into? You’re going to need to know the rules, norms, vocabulary, and general state of the industry you’re about to enter, so do your homework and figure this out. It’s not good enough to fake it—you’ll want to be able to talk the talk in meetings with clients and also as you network and build relationships with other businesses. Take the time to learn all you can.

Here are a few tips on how:

• What are the top three books written about your industry or market? A simple Google or Amazon search will produce the most popular, highest-grossing book sales for industry-relevant options. Buy the top three and read them. • Who are the top leaders in your industry? You can research them at the global or national level, but also be sure to include your local authorities. Even if they’re smaller fish in the overall industry pond, they could have valuable insights. Now, research any articles, press, or interviews that pertain to them and read those. What about any books they’ve written or conferences they’ve attended? What they’re talking about and where they’re going are good indicators of what you should know and where you need to be attending to stay on top of the relevant changes in your industry.

Define Your Purpose If you’ve heard the buzzworthy Simon Sinek TED Talk called “Start with Why” then you already know the importance of this idea. If you haven’t, watch it, and then sit down with a pad of paper and start brainstorming why you’re in business or about to go into business. Make sure you aren’t going off the rails with “how” you do what you do; stay focused purely on why you do what you do. The how will follow; don’t worry about that just yet.

Define The Feeling of Your Business When you know why do you what you do, your business still needs to answer some more questions. As you know from your own experiences, how you feel during your interaction and continued exposure to a business or brand is why you choose to love them or leave them. (Translation: Neither one was looking for a relationship.) A mutual friend randomly introduced the pair that evening. “I remembered him from middle school and thought he was a troublemaker, but I was intrigued by something about him. He was really nice, and we had lots of fun that night!” Chelsey says. IDEAL DATE: Now that they’re parents, the pair’s idea of an ideal date is a relaxing dinner out and enjoying each other’s company—oh, and a good night’s sleep! KEY TO ROMANTIC SUCCESS: Wes scores major points by helping Chelsey out with chores around the house and being the best dad he can be to their son, both of which he says seems to help in the romance department at the end of the day. His wife agrees! Meanwhile, Chelsey says the key to their maintaining the romance is by having a good balance of give-and-take along with open communication.

Chad moved back to the neighborhood a few years ago after being in the Air Force. After that, they saw each other several times while Macy walked the neighborhood, but they never really spoke. Through mutual friends, they ended up at a birthday party together, where they held their first conversation. The following week, they spent a few evenings just talking and casually walking the neighborhood until Chad finally made a move and asked Macy on a first date. They’ve spent nearly every day together ever since.

IDEAL DATE: The pair agrees, “If we are talking ideal, then the first word that came to both of our minds was ‘Disneyland!’” Chad says, “One of my most favorite memories with Macy was after spending the day enjoying the sights, sounds, and smells of the park, we had reservations at the Blue Bayou inside Pirates of the Caribbean. The food is great, and the ambience is everything you’d expect from Disney. It was wonderful to enjoy a romantic dinner together after a long day of crowds.” KEY TO ROMANTIC SUCCESS: They both say that silliness is key to keeping the romance alive. “I enjoy our moments where we can just act immature and be ourselves around each other, and he just joins right in with me. We accept and embrace our inner child!” Macy says.

JAMES AND ALYSSA BOOTHE AGE: 32 and 31 OCCUPATIONS: HR metrics analyst and assistant project manager LOVE STORY: “I love our love story and how our little life came to be,” Alyssa says. They met in college, ran in the same circle of friends, and then started dating about a year later. The pair likes to refer to themselves as nonconformists, i.e., they don’t exactly follow life’s normal rules. “Our oldest daughter popped into our lives smack in the middle of college, leaving us unmarried and unprepared. Instead of rushing into anything and compounding issues that we were bound to have given our new situation, we made the decision to do right by her and finish college before tying the knot,” Alyssa says. They graduated in the month of May and got married the following month. “We were a team right from the start, and all that we counted on was each other. Kalyn came to us, planned or not. She was never going to be our reason for failure, only our reason for success,” Alyssa added. IDEAL DATE: James and Alyssa are low-key and go with the flow. Their ideal date could be a football game with a cold beer, a movie, or a good hike—they’re happy doing whatever as long as they’re together. KEY TO ROMANTIC SUCCESS: Remembering what’s important is paramount. “If we’re not happy, then the family isn’t happy,” Alyssa says, adding that it’s easy to forget that when all of a sudden you’re living your life for your family and at such a fast pace. “Taking time for a kiss or a big giant hug at the end of a long day may be just enough. But ultimately, I’d do anything to reconnect with him if I felt like we were slipping.”

They met in person two weeks after the first e-mail. IDEAL DATE: For Jeremiah, it’s traveling to a new city and exploring it for a few days. Candice’s ideal date is similar: a vacation to a new place and exploring it together. Don’t forget your hands The skin on your hands is thinner than on most parts of the body and has fewer oil glands. That means that it’s harder to keep your hands moist, especially in cold, dry weather. This can lead to itchiness and cracking. Wear gloves when you go outside. If you need to wear wool to keep your hands warm, slip on a thin cotton glove first to avoid any irritation the wool might cause.
