The Coming Storm Local meteorologist Shelley Sakala on how to survive an Arizona monsoon. THIS IS BIGGER than ComicCon. Bigger than any fantasy football draft party. This is the time of year when Arizona weather reporters (and former weather reporters like me) get downright giddy over the upcoming change in the weather. June 15 marks the official kickoff of the Arizona monsoon— and you’ll notice I didn’t say “monsoon season.” That’s what civilians call it. A true meteorologist knows that the monsoon is the season—like summer. And any of those crazy storms that happen from June 15–Sept. 30 are called monsoon thunderstorms. Got that? If you’re never been through an Arizona monsoon, you’re in for a real treat—a real frightening treat. The skies will turn purple. The rain will fall sideways. The wind will do its best to blow your house down. You will see pool toys, patio umbrellas, and the occasional backyard trampoline flying through the air (but probably no cows). Think Wizard of Oz meets end of the world. But despite the nightmarish appearances, it’s a perfect time to refer to everyone’s fa-

vorite Internet meme and Keep Calm. The best way to get through the monsoon safely is to plan ahead. Two things can happen when a storm hits: power outages and road closures. So ask yourself this question: What would you do if you had no electricity and couldn’t go to the store for a couple of days? A quick peek inside your pantry will probably answer this question. But remember, it’s not just the amount of food you have but also the type of food. A 50-pound bag of rice does you no good if you have an electric stove. And how would you open that can of SpaghettiOs if you only had an electric can opener? The key is to think like a survivalist. Make sure you have hand-crank can openers, ready-to-eat food, and water that’s not already mixed with hops and malted barley. During a blackout, power becomes the new currency. Flashlights and batteries are like cigarettes to a prisoner. And that trusty iPhone of yours is only good until the battery is dead. Since you use electricity to recharge a smart phone, you might want to buy a couple of portable battery packs

Quote of the Day:
“The key is not the will to win—everybody has that. It is the will to prepare to win that is important.” —BOBBY KNIGHT, FORMER U.S. BASKETBALL HEAD COACH
to enjoy the normal activities of summer—vacationing, swimming, and spending time with friends at the movies and endless sleepovers that test even the most doting of parents. Taking a mental break from the grind of practices and games can help renew the desire for the sports kids love to play and give them the motivation to get back to the grind when the time is right.
Second: Get Specific I’m not suggesting that all 10 weeks of break be spent just on summer fun and that investing time into development and getting better should not be a priority. In fact, I think that summer is the perfect time for just that, but I believe that there are smarter ways of taking advantage of the summer and that the majority of the time should not be engaged in team practice or game activity. This is a great time for kids to get specific about their craft and work on perfecting physical movements related to their sport through instruction, developing strength and conditioning with performance training, and enhancing overall understanding of a particular sport via professional camps. One-on-one instruction can help highlight the flaws of the mechanics in the sport and also help young athletes make the necessary adjustments to developing the physical movements required to achieve success at a higher level. Performance training can give an athlete that edge over the competition by increasing strength, speed, and endurance. To truly benefit and see the results from performance training, an athlete should spend four to six weeks in a training session. This way, there will likely be major improvements in his or her game through transferring these learned skills to the field, court, or gym. A three-to-five-day summer camp that concentrates solely on your child’s preferred sport can also not only enhance the physical movements of the sport but also improve its mental aspect by putting the participants in gamelike situations and working through strategies that, by repetition, allow the body and mind to learn the correct way of performing a particular skill and the correct way of reacting to a particular situation.
on how to accomplish all three in any given sport this summer for your child. To give yourself a head start, utilize the Arizona Sports Directory for instruction and camps; it can be found at xlyouthsports.com. For performance and strength training in our neighborhood, you could contact Battleground Fitness, CrossFit Blade, and Orange Theory Fitness. Most importantly, educate yourself and listen to the physical and mental cues on how much rest is necessary to protect your young athlete. This way, you can ensure that he or she has the desire to get better and participate in athletic activity for many years to come. Make sure your children hit the brakes this summer and get some rest, get specific about their training, and get educated on what’s best for their overall development. That way, they can truly enjoy their summer break and not have to worry about an athletic break in their mind, body, or spirit.
Third: Get Educated What I just described to you, and what I have been a big proponent of for many years, is utilizing the summer to give a child the tools to become a triple-fit athlete—becoming fit by participating in skills training, physical training, and mental training. I encourage you to find the necessary resources to educate yourself JUNE 2015

Manscaping
Beauty expert Jacqueline Starr-Hubert goes in search of the perfect shave. GUYS, THIS ONE’S for you. As you make the effort to stay competitive and look your best, you may also prefer to keep it simple and perfect the routine you already have. So, let’s explore the most basic of regimes—shaving. It’s an underrated thing, the regimen, and in the interest of making every moment of this crucial ritual count, we offer a guide to the best way we know how to conduct it. 1. Allow a few minutes for your face to deflate. Allow the first-thing-in-the-morning puffiness to reduce itself before you shave. Ten minutes should do the trick. Doing so dramatically reduces the risk of nicking. A smoother surface allows for better results. 2. Always start with cool water. To prepare skin before shaving, cleanse skin thoroughly with a face wash and warm water—avoid using hot water as this can overdry skin, leading to irritation. 3. Take a day off from weekly shaving (sorry, ladies!). Try not to shave at least once a week— it really helps skin if you give it a rest, and I find that when you next shave, you tend to get a super-close and smoother finish. 4. Make “slow and short strokes” your mantra. The most common mistake men make shaving is the speed at which they stroke. Men who suffer with razor burn tend to be the ones who shave at 100 mph. This creates friction, which leads to irritation. Take your time, and use slow, short strokes.
6. Press, don’t push! Men tend to think that if they press harder, they’ll get a closer shave, but that’s not so. Modern razors are designed to work with relatively little pressure, so if you want to reduce irritation, don’t push. Instead, apply just enough pressure to keep the blade in contact with the skin, and let the blade do all the work for you. 7. Switch to oils if you’re sensitive. Certain skin types can be greatly affected by the alkaline PH level in some shaving products. If your skin is easily irritated, it may be worth checking the shaving medium you use and try something new. To minimize problems, try shaving oil, which I find much kinder for sensitive skin. 8. Be aware of your blades. Never use a blunt blade as it is distressing to the skin, causes redness and irritation, and won’t shave skin evenly. (Ladies, use your own…we’ve all done it!) 9. Skip the aftershave. Aftershaves all typically contain a high level of alcohol, which tends to dry out your skin, increase the risk of irritation after your shave, and deplete the skin’s natural defensive barrier, accelerating the skin aging process. Instead, apply an aftershave balm or moisturizer.
5. Apply gel or cream in circular motions. When applying shaving gel or cream, 10. Ingrown hairs! apply it with your fingertips, using a Ingrown hairs aren’t serious, but they circular motion.
