Designate a place for supplies We want our children to become adept problem solvers who can work collaboratively as well as independently. So when little sister decides to repurpose the tree in Jack’s Grand Canyon diorama to landscape Barbie’s Glam Camper, how will Jack fix this problem if he doesn’t know where the glue is?
Create habits One of the best ways to form a new habit is to link it to something you already do with fidelity. If your darlings march through the door every day after school and head straight for the fridge, they’ve got the beginning of a routine. The next step is to invest some time and help them link cleaning up after snack time to pulling out their homework agenda. As time goes on, gradually remove yourself from their routine.
Incentives Giving kids specific praise like “Your handwriting is so easy to read. You must have been really focused” tells them exactly what they did well and increases the odds that they will do it again in the future. While I’m not typically a fan of extrinsic rewards, research has shown that a little bribery can reap powerful benefits when implementing a new habit. Please use this one judiciously, though!
Consequences As for the consequences of unfinished homework, try Love and Logic. It sounds like this: “You didn’t do your spelling homework, Emma? What a bummer. You’ll have to complete that instead of seeing your friends at Girl Scouts tonight.” Lead with compassion and allow for natural consequences. And, who knows, maybe if you train the littles well enough now, they’ll be doing your taxes come 2016!

VENDIO This software is designed specifically for e-commerce. Most features are included in all pricing plans. Pricing is dependent upon the number of each specific item you have for sale, or SKUs. One of the most time-saving elements is the simplification of the process of selling your product on multiple sites such as eBay, Amazon, and Facebook. When you add a product or change a price on one platform, those changes can be made on all platforms simultaneously. All transactions are tracked, and the data is presented in charts that reflect current trends, costs, and profits. The data can also be used to generate tax reports. Vendio provides a Facebook store application that allows customers to make purchases without ever having to leave Facebook as well as a store widget that can be embedded on your personal website.
ZOHO This multipurpose online service offers a limited free version that includes e-mail and live chat. Free invoicing is limited to up to five contacts. Software applications are available in the categories of sales and marketing, customer support, e-mail and collaboration, finance, human resources, and business processes. Each of these categories has its own monthly pricing plan; plans range from $12 to $50 per month. However, you can also pay per use for functions that you don’t utilize often enough to justify a monthly subscription fee. Some money-saving features available include automating e-mail responses, generating payment reminders and invoices, and accepting online payments. You can also use it to assign tickets and completion deadlines to specific agents. Using the data-tracking information, you can generate customized daily reports for everything from sales figures to agent performance.
These are just a few of the software tools that can provide the technological resources recommended by the U.S. Small Business Administration to help your business remain competitive. AUGUST 2015

into our timelines. Sometimes they do, and sometimes they don’t, but for the frequent golfer, it can be important to cover all the bases in our search for discounted tee times and the best golf experience. Anthem Golf & Country Club, Dove Valley Ranch Golf Club, The 500 Club, and The Legend at Arrowhead all have Facebook pages (so give ’em a Like). GPSi is a great example of golf-course tech. The 500 Club currently uses their signature Visage software, which provides them the ability to track and monitor the pace of play (and dispatch the marshal to remedy the problem group—usually mine, wink). It also keeps scores electronically and e-mails them to players, senses when players approach the turn, and electronically offers the lunch menu in perfect time to pick it up from the grill. The tracker knows the location of your golf cart and restricts you from driving into disallowed territory by completely shutting your motor off. (It’s called geofencing, and please, don’t ask me how I know this. All I’ll say is that a shot of Fireball was involved.) It even alerts the cart barn when your cart has a low battery. I think I’m just spending five hours chasing a ball, but the course knows my deepest, darkest secrets (such as the fact that I sometimes hit a drive in the direction of New Mexico). The newest idea includes electronic flagsticks. While I don’t know that any course in the Valley uses them, it seems like a useful technology for monitoring pace of play. It goes like this: Your group pulls the flagstick, putts, and then returns the flagstick back into the hole. The group behind you should pull that same flagstick in 13 minutes if they’re playing at the right pace for the course, and if they are not, the clubhouse sees that and can address it right away. And then there are apps. You may already use an app on your smartphone for the PGA or LPGA, but did you know that your favorite course may have its own app, too? Such is the case for Anthem Golf & Country Club and Lookout Mountain. Anthem Golf & Country Club’s app will have more functionality in the future, but for now it replaces their entire yardage book. Until next time, may all your putts be short ones.

“
The kiddos in my class that were coming over to Sonoran Foothills were constantly asking me all about it and are so eager to start the school year. —JESSICA KERICH
”
the process went as smoothly as possible, with essentially no delays or fear that the school wouldn’t be open for the 2015–16 school year. “One of the supervisors, the liaison [Jerry] Cipriano, said in his 34 years with the district, he has never had this experience where everything has gone so smoothly,” Sharon says. The nearly 79,000-square-foot school will welcome 550 students this fall in grades prekindergarten through seventh grade. The children will come primarily from Sunset Ridge and Norterra Canyon and there will also be former attendees of charter schools. The school will add eighth grade during the 2016–17 school year. “The eighth graders really need to stay with their home school,” Sharon says. “They have a lot invested in wherever they have been, so the Deer Valley policy is to leave eighth graders in their present school so that they can finish up where most of their career was.” While this new school will relieve some of the overcrowding from Norterra Canyon and Sunset Ridge, this is also a big step in the right direction for the entire community. “Being [at the school’s open house] felt like when we first moved in,” Kim says. “There was such a sense of community, and the kids that play together are going to school together, and they’re all right here.” Sonoran Foothills will also be closer to Kim’s home, and she’s excited that her boys will be able to ride their bikes to school instead of having to take a bus. Jessica Kerich, a former Norterra Canyon teacher, will be teaching sixth-grade science and social studies at Sonoran Foothills. She agrees with Kim and believes that this new school will be a great opportunity for teachers, students, and parents to come together to create a wonderful educational experience. Jessica has a lot planned for her three sixthgrade classes—everything from ancient civilizations to weather and water science. All of her classes will participate in a yearlong water-investigation project and will later present their projects at a symposium. She will also have some special visitors during her diversity-of-life

there who does not want the very best for them. We spend weeks or even months researching their schools. We bend over backward to make sure they own the latest and greatest electronic toy, and we pay thousands each year so they can be involved in sports and get an edge on the future. Yet when it comes to food, we wave our hands in the air and resign ourselves to the idea that they just won’t eat healthy foods. Why is that? Does anyone else see a flaw in that theory? Food is what makes up our bodies. Food plays a role in how healthy children grow, how they behave in school and at home, how they study for a test, and how they perform at those sporting events. Food is not a casual afterthought—it’s 100 percent of what makes our bodies run and function. You are what you eat, and that goes for the kids, too! Parents ask me to help them change their children’s way of eating. Often, my first question is: “Are you as the parent willing to change your eating along with theirs?” Kids are a reflection of you, and if you won’t make your health a priority, why would they? Be a mirror and show them how to eat. Make your health a priority, lead by example, and your children will follow. Teach them what food does for them in a very real way. Kids are smart and they love to learn, so take the time to teach them. I don’t allow electronics at my table, but every once in a while, we play a game in which the kids guess what their food is doing to make their bodies healthier and stronger. I state a food item, and they tell me if it’s a fruit, a
veggie, a protein, or a carb. Then they guess what it does for their body, and finally we Google a reliable source from which I read to them what the food we are eating is doing to make their bodies better. We all have fun, and we all learn at least one new thing. I teach them that sugar is addictive and why we want to pick our foods so wisely. My daughter is 7 years old now and probably knows more about food and its value than most adults do. We practice balance at our house. I’m the parent, so I decide what gets purchased from the grocery store that they’ll help me cook. I don’t cave to endless requests for boxed food, and that’s because they never make them. I wouldn’t give that control to a 5- and a 7-year-old anyway. However, I did say that I rarely give them choices. When we go out to eat or attend a birthday party, all rules are off, and I let them order anything they want. Sometimes they make good choices, and sometimes they don’t, but either way it’s okay, because 85 percent of the time, they eat whole, balanced meals. Plus, I believe the balance keeps them in check and allows them to see firsthand how food makes them feel. Both will usually complain of a stomachache within an hour of making bad choices, and I use that as a learning moment to talk more about food. Making changes can be frustrating, but remember why you are making them and how your children will thank you in the years to come. You’re giving them a gift that is priceless—their health.
Are you as the parent willing to change your eating along with theirs?
