Create a bewitching witch’s hat What you need: • 2 standard sheets of black cardboard • bowl • standard sheet of felt (green, orange, purple, or whatever color you desire) • strip of black felt • white craft glue • scissors • tape • ribbons to decorate the hat

Activity: • Roll one sheet of black cardboard into a cone and secure with tape.

• Trim the bottom of the cone so that it will stand up on the table.

• Trace a circle around the bottom of the cone on the second sheet of black cardboard. Using a bowl as a guide, trace a circle larger than the bottom of your cone, as this will be the brim of your hat. Cut out the inner circle of cardboard, about 1/4” inside the line you’ve drawn, leaving room for your head.Glue the cone to the circle and set aside to dry.

• Cut 1–2 cm strips of felt and glue them around the cone—make concentric circles around your hat so it looks stripy, or try gluing the felt in a spiral from the bottom of the cone to the top, in a continuous line.

• You can be as creative as you like—use spots of ribbon, or cut out your favorite Halloween shapes and glue those onto your black hat.

• Cut a strip of black felt to go around the base of the cone (this will cover any messy glue left behind after attaching the cone to the brim).

• Your witch hat is ready!

October is here, and with it comes fall. Temperatures start to dip—a little. The oppressive heat becomes manageable heat. We can finally crack open the windows in our homes—at night, anyway. And that pungent smell in the air means the overseeding of our lawns has begun.

There are so many transplants here in Phoenix from cold weather states, and they’ve all experienced firsthand those brisk October days. It was the time of year when fall felt like fall. Dad would rake up the leaves, the cable-knit sweaters would return to our wardrobes, and the smell of burning wood on a late-afternoon walk meant that fireplaces were keeping everyone’s living rooms warm and toasty.

Here in Phoenix, however, fall simply means we’re squeezing in those last few weekends by the pool (while sipping a pumpkin-spice latte, of course). And unlike autumn in Wisconsin or Pennsylvania, Halloween costumes in Phoenix are engineered for coolness and breathability rather than warmth. If you grew up someplace back East, you may have bundled up to the point that your costume was unrecognizable. But only in Arizona does Halloween feature Teenage Sleeveless Ninja Turtles or an Iron Man dressed in shorts.

Such is the life we live here in the desert. We put up with 90-degree swimming pools, sidewalks hotter than a Foreman grill, and the ever-popular scalding seat-belt buckle. We spend our summer weekends zipping up north or out to the California coast. But now we can rejoice in the fact that we’re almost finished paying our summer dues and there’s seven months of amazing weather ahead of us. Should I Stay, or Should I Go? Local real estate agent David Fisher takes on a common homeowner conundrum.

I often have clients ask me if it is better to sell their home and purchase a new one or fix up the home they are in to meet their immediate needs. This can easily be decided by breaking down the situation.

What is lacking in the home that would make it more suitable? What would the cost be to make the changes needed? And what would be the price of a new home that possesses all of the desired features?

What is missing?

You first need to develop a list of items that you feel would make you love your home. Make the list detailed. You would be surprised what a big difference a new interior paint color can make on the feel of a home. Next, make of list of features that you like about your home. It’s always interesting to see which list is longer.

This can help you quantify where your heart truly is.

The majority of cosmetic issues can be corrected inexpensively. The more difficult changes include adding bedrooms or swimming pools and any other projects that would require a building permit. Usually, it makes more financial sense to buy a new home in these situations.

What is the damage?

The next step is to obtain quotes from contractors to complete the work needed on your home. Most contractors will provide free estimates if asked. Make sure to request these quotes from someone that is licensed and referred by a friend. Typically, you are able to get better prices from a contractor that has worked for someone you know and you can see the quality of their work.

Facebook and Angie’s List are great places to gather referrals. You will be shocked at how many comments you receive by simply posting “Does anyone know of a good flooring contractor in the Norterra area?” People love to help!

Call in the experts Once you have gathered all the quotes, call a Realtor. Be honest and upfront with them. Let them know that you are on the fence and are unsure of whether you should sell your house and move or make a few improvements to your home. A good Realtor will not push you to sell and will be happy to provide you with the information you need free of charge.

What information will you need?

You’ll need a list of properties that have sold in the last two months in your subdivision. For example, if you live in Dynamite Mountain Ranch, you won’t want to use homes sold in Valley Vista as a reference. Appraisers try to stay in the exact subdivision when applying value to a property. The properties should be within 10 percent of your square footage as well. If your home is 2,000 square feet, only look at homes between 1,800–2,200 square feet.

You’ll also need a list of properties that meet the expectations of both of the lists you have created. It will be difficult to determine what color the walls are in each room, but you should be able to cover the major items. This may also be your opportunity to ask to see properties that have features that you cannot correct on your current home. Examples of this are properties that are closer to the school or those that have a three-car garage.

And you have it!

If it’s less costly to pay off your mortgage and buy a new home than it is to improve the home you currently own, it’s time to move. If it would cost less to take on a few small projects, settle in and get to work!

You Talkin’ to Me? (Yes, you probably are) Meet local writer Dave McMinn, who combs through online dating profiles so you don’t have to.

On the day that I explained to my wife how I would be spending lots of time on dating websites, she reacted better than I expected: skeptical, but supportive when learning that my days would soon include hours and hours combing through online profiles, scanning through photos, and trying to find the perfect match—for my clients.

I am a ghostwriter for people on dating websites.

Is that even a “thing”?

Yes, it is. The company I work for manages the online dating lives of men and women all over the world.

So what’s it like?

Ghostwriters spend several hours each day combing through match.com, eharmony.com, okcupid.com, and even sites like hotrussianbrides.com as they search for that one perfect soul mate. Or 10. You get to see the barely dressed and the barely literate looking for love or some version of it. I’ve seen every style of bathroom-

mirror selfie you could imagine—sometimes I go to bed with my eyes still burning. Clients range from the CEO looking to outsource his online dating life to the new guy in town looking to meet people.

Divorcées, widowers, serial daters, 20-somethings, seniors, and the occasional 40-year-old virgin—their stories, written in my words. I get them the dates.

All that clients have to do is show up and be charming!

But isn’t that “lying”?

It’s enhancement. A good writer takes actual facts about a person and crafts them into an attention-getting profile and a handful of witty back-and-forth messages. It’s not a Walter Mitty situation—we won’t claim that a client went to Harvard if he didn’t, nor do we invent stories about skydiving adventures that never happened. We simply focus on the more interesting parts of a person’s life and draw them out in the conversation.

Rather than being “an accountant who likes bicycling on the weekends,” she’ll be “a mountain-biking addict who supports her habit with a corporate job.”

When you think about it, everyone participates in various levels of enhancement each day. We tidy up our homes for Saturday night to give the ap-

pearance of neatness; splash on fragrance to make us smell better than we really do; and wear slimming colors, slimming fabrics, Spanx, push-up bras, makeup, hair extensions, and spray-on tans. We might take it a step further with temporary or even permanent physical enhancements.

From Botox to boob jobs, enhancement is part of our culture. So why wouldn’t we step up our game and appear a little more suave when it comes to an online dating life?

How long do clients stay with you?

This is one business where losing clients is actually a good thing. It’s especially satisfying when someone cancels because he or she has connected with someone special and is ready to jump off the online dating train. Although I’ve never met any of the hundreds of clients I’ve mentored, I can’t help but feel a little sad (single teardrop) when my babies finally leave the nest to begin their own real, non-online relationships. That’s when I know I’ve done good work. And I’ll forever remain someone’s slightly dirty little secret.

The strangest experience Dave’s experienced as a ghostwriter?

Last year, I found myself carrying on an online conversation between a client in Phoenix and an acquaintance of mine.

Lately, it seems that no matter what book I search for on Amazon, the results suggest that I might also enjoy The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. So on a whim, I decided to check it out. I didn’t even bother to read the summary or any reviews before I picked it up, so the entire story was a complete surprise for me and I’m now convinced that Amazon doesn’t lie. I did, in fact, enjoy this book very much!

The book is set on the Channel island of Guernsey in the years during and immediately after Word War II. While the novel necessarily addresses many of the gruesome horrors of the German occupation, there were moments of kindness, community, and selfless love. I finished the book feeling simultaneously horrified by the potential for human evil and marveled by the capacity for human compassion The novel is entirely epistolary, and I found this element surprisingly enjoyable. It was hard to follow the large cast of characters through the first few letters, but I soon found myself swept into the world of Guernsey and its endearing characters attending Literary Society meetings.

I don’t want to give anything in the story away, but the Literary Society is spontaneously formed out of necessity and not from any particular love for and appreciation of literature. But over the years, all the characters seem to find something in their respective book that challenged them, comforted them, taught them, or encouraged them through their trials. It definitely made me appreciate the power in literature and the effect it can have on even the most unsuspecting consumers.

As I read about the impacts of literature on the lives of the characters, I was reminded of the importance and permanence of the written word. So many TV shows are soon forgotten and will leave no footprint or legacy. So many don’t challenge the way you look at the future and teach nothing about the past.

So turn it off! Find a good book. Pick it up and see where it leads you.

The Black Mariah Over-the-top Halloween display is a neighborhood treasure The creator behind the elaborate Black Mariah pirate ship display won’t divulge exactly where the ship is “docked.” When pressed, he quotes a line from the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie: “It can only be found by people who’ve already been there.” He encourages everyone to go on a hunt to find this neighborhood treasure—his only clue is that it’s near Jomax and I-17. Construction of the set started on Sept. 15 in order to complete it by early October. The 60-foot-ship display features a light, sound, and music show on Fridays in October and on Halloween night. “Most everything, I made—cannons, stern lamps, etc.— everything except for things like the pirate skulls,” says the creator, who prefers to remain anonymous. Growing up in Chicago, I just loved Halloween. It was the start of the holiday season. The air was crisp, and it was usually raining. Now that I’ve been in Arizona for the past 16 years and have six kids of my own, I love it just as much. It’s not quite as chilly, but our October weather is just beautiful!

Halloween is always a huge hit in my house, just as it was when I was little. We love putting up spooky decor both inside and out. Then, it’s time to start working on our costumes. My husband and I dress up, too—the kids love it! Putting costumes together can be a bit challenging at times, especially when there are eight of us, but I find that the earlier you shop, the better. If you’re a costume fan, too, start thinking of a theme or characters that the kids want to be. From there, you can search sites like pinterest.com for great ideas. They have great DIY ideas for everything you can imagine. If you’re not a member, sign up now—it’s free!

are, I suggest checking out places like Goodwill and Savers for some great Halloween finds! This year, we’re doing a Batman theme, so we’ll see what I come up with.

Halloween’s also the perfect time to plan a block party, host a dinner party, or set up a fun family event. A couple of my favorite things about my community are the block parties and weenie roasts that are planned the night of Halloween.

For decor, I love the traditional orange and black, which always makes a great backdrop, but why not glam it up a bit like I did here with some black and white stripes with pops of gold. Planning an event can seem a bit overwhelming, but it doesn’t need to be, and you don’t need a large space to make a big impact. I did this setup in my kitchen using a vintage tea cart I found on a local Swip Swap site. I added some cobwebs, fun glasses with paper straws, glitter pumpkins I found at Ross, and some super-yummy sweets. There are so many fabulous local

I made a backdrop using two yards of striped fabric from Hobby Lobby, which I cut in half to create a curtain effect, along with some metallic panels and black-and-gold balloons from Party City.

Don’t forget some spooky background music and dry ice! I love using dry ice. You can find it at most grocery stores, and it’s super-inexpensive. It creates a fun party atmosphere.

Halloween is on a Friday this year, and I’m so excited about that! You can plan all these events, and the kids won’t have to wake up early the next day for school.

I’m sure the teachers appreciate that too!

Simple Art Creations

Crafty local mom Shannon Fisher offers up fun and easy craft projects using items found around your house.

Fall for many of us means time for back-to-school shopping, signing up for sports, and other fun activities for the kids. These costs can all add up quickly! Lucky for you, there are probably inexpensive craft supplies all around your home. Here are some fun and easy ideas!

Coffee-Filter Butterflies You will need markers (non-permanent), water, paper towels, a coffee filter, and a chenille stem.

Pick an area to work where it is safe to use markers, such as one covered with plastic, cardboard or newspaper. Flatten a coffee filter and then color the filter with markers, covering all the white area. When the filter is covered, wet it over a sink since the marker will run a bit. Set it aside to dry flat on paper towels. (This should take about 30 minutes depending on how wet the filter is. It will dry faster outside.)

Once dry, accordion-fold the filter, using about ½-inch pleats. Take the chenille stem and fold it in half. Find the middle of the filter and wrap the stem around and then back up to create the antennae. Fan out the wings, and enjoy your new butterfly friend!

Hidden-Toy BOTTLE You will need an empty water bottle or a plastic container with a lid, depending on how many objects you want to add. We used a plastic reusable water bottle from the dollar store since it had a large opening on top.

Take your container of choice and add small buttons, toys, or small objects from around the house to the bottle. Make sure to keep a list of what you put in so you can have it for reference for the kids to check off as they find them. Add rice until about three quarters full so the items are buried but there’s have room to shake the rice around. Close the container up tight. For extra insurance, you can glue the lid on if it will not be opened again. We left our bottle unglued so that we can change out the objects later. This craft is like a seek-and-find, but in 3-D form. Have fun finding your treasures over and over again!

Toilet-Paper-Roll Bracelets You will need an empty toilet paper roll, old magazines, scissors, white glue (school glue), and a paintbrush.

There are many things you can do with an empty toilet paper roll. One of our favorites is making bracelets or arm cuffs. Take the roll and cut down the length of the tube. Trim across in two-inch bands or larger if you are making a cuff. One paper roll made two bracelets for us. Cut out pictures, words, or designs from the old magazines. Paint the white glue on the tube, and place the magazines on the bracelet or cuff. Continue until the roll is all covered, and then paint a last coat of glue over all the magazine pieces to seal them and set the roll aside to dry. After it is dry (probably best overnight), you can wear your newest creations!

Resort Style A Sonoran Foothills couple makes beautiful memories by their sparking pool.

Rob and Tina Hannaford, along with their beloved pooch, Jackson, moved into their Sonoran Foothills home in August 2013. They moved from Vancouver, Canada, to be in the heat and sunshine daily and to continue Rob’s successful real estate business as well as Tina’s professional photography.

When they first walked in to their 85085 home, its grand feel instantly made a notable impression, as did the water bowls cascading into the pool. Their resort-like backyard is one of their favorite things about the home. “Our pool is truly amazing,” Tina says. “It’s very Zen-like.”

The couple enjoys the privacy of the yard. It backs up to a desert wash and affords a sense of seclusion and serenity. “We live in our resortstyle backyard, and the three of us are always in the pool every chance we get,” Tina says. She points out the Buddha statue overlooking the pool. “Of course, we always have to rub the Buddha’s belly in gratitude for our beautiful home and lifestyle.”

“Every day we make memories,” she says. “Our favorite is having coffee by the pool early in the morning and enjoying the stunning sunsets at dinner.”

Halloween: No Fun for Fido Don’t be tricked into thinking Halloween is a big treat for your pets, says local pet advocate Roberta Gottlieb.

Halloween is all fun and games for kids, but for your pets, not so much! Take a moment and imagine trick-or-treat night from your pet’s perspective.

There are the scary children dressed in strange costumes, doorbells ringing nonstop, and the constant flow of strangers at your house. Sometimes, you want to dress your cat or dog up and walk among the throngs of squealing children. That’s enough to make me anxious as a human adult, but for your pet, multiply that by a thousand!

Even if your pet is typically very social and calm, Halloween activities offer all types of triggers that could result in a bite incident. It’s best to have your pet safely contained inside your home (not in the yard, since pranksters may be on the prowl) and provide a calming treat such as a peanut-butter-stuffed Kong toy.

Many pets become frightened and bolt out of their homes, so by being proactive, you can prevent your best buddy from becoming one of the

multitude of lost pets on Halloween.

If you want to dress your pet in a costume, do so in the safety of his or her own environment, take your photos, and post them on Facebook. Parading your pet around crowds of excited children could be a recipe for disaster. When you are focused on your children’s activity and safety, it’s easy to be distracted from any

warning signs your pet could be exhibiting that show that he or she has reached a threshold and is about to react and bite.

Please remember to keep lighted candles and jack-o’-lanterns in a location where your pet cannot get too close or knock them over. Also, pets’ natural curiosity will draw them to the kids’ treat bags, which are loaded with yummy smells. I try to think of my pets as permanent toddlers and apply many of the typical baby-proofing measures to keep them safe. Being proactive will not only keep them from a situation that would be difficult to resist but also can help maintain your own pet-parent sanity. You won't have to urgently pull your pet out of the way or find yourself screaming your head off to stay away—good luck with that, by the way. If the kids want to come home and spread their candy all over the floor, keep your pet in a separate area. Kids love to examine their stash and count, trade, and eat some of their candy pretty quickly after returning home. After this initial treat extravaganza, take responsibility to ensure that the treat bag is kept out of

reach of your pets.

Most everyone knows about the health danger that chocolates pose for dogs, but there are other items that can appear in the kids’ treat bags that can be just as dangerous. Any products or candy that contains xylitol, including sugar-free gum, can cause seizures and liver failure and prove deadly. Raisins may be given to the kids as a healthy alternative to candy, but kidney failure could be the price your pet pays for tasting these. Some other unfriendly pet finds could be macadamia nuts, walnuts, and apples (the seeds are the culprits).

At any time within the 72-hour period after Halloween, if your pet exhibits any unusual signs of a problem, please seek immediate veterinary care. Some of the indications are vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, muscle weakness, tremors or seizures, and lack of urine production.

Halloween should be fun for everybody, and you can make it special for your pets, too. By simply providing a contained environment and a long-lasting pet-appropriate treat, your dog or cat can have a safe celebration!

All pet owners should keep these numbers stored on their cell phones, since time is of the essence whenever a pet has ingested a potential poison.

I’ve always been passionate about helping others create happiness and joy in their own lives, and I myself had always wanted to create a life in which I could build a business from home and raise my kids—I wanted to have my cake and eat it, too! When I started playing around with tulle at my kitchen table, I never dreamt it would turn into my own company, Juju’s Tutus.

Over the last five years, I’ve been blessed to work from my in-home studio building Juju’s Tutus while I raise my four kids, ages 1 through 11. In my studio, I design and create beautiful tulle skirts and dresses to help girls of all ages twirl and sparkle through life’s greatest moments. In addition to my girls’ line, I have a handmade line of tulle skirts for women, called Serendipity Skirts, and a boys clothing line, Huck and Jack. And like any true entrepreneur, I have great things on the horizon for 2015! I also exhibit at bridal shows in the Phoenix market. My designs, primarily sold through Etsy, have been featured on the runway and in top national wedding and party blogs as well as in local media coverage.

My company wouldn’t be where it is today without the friends I’ve met along the way through networking. Small business owners and entrepreneurs really want to help others succeed. If you’re dedicated and put in the work to make your dream a reality, there will be people along the way who will help you. One of the best perks of my job is collaborating with other small business owners to create events and over-the-top photo shoots, and to encourage one another along the way.

While I started my business completely by accident, it has been a true labor of love cultivated daily with many trials and errors and good ideas that weren’t good enough to become great. But that’s one of the most beautiful pieces of being an entrepreneur––failure. It’s painful while it’s happening, but the lessons and beauty born from it are priceless bits of wisdom that far outweigh any amount of discomfort. Every day, I’m diligently creating what I’m passionate about, and I have the best time doing it!

What a tasty way to celebrate fall Butternut Squash Risotto (serves two) 2 mini pumpkins 2 tsps. vegetable oil 4 strips bacon, chopped into small pieces Ω white onion, diced 1 cup butternut squash, cut into small cubes (you can buy this frozen, which saves a lot

of time, or you can oven roast fresh cubes until tender) 1 cup arborio rice Ω cup white wine 3 cups very hot chicken stock 1Ω tsps. salt Ω tsps. white pepper ∑ cup pine nuts, toasted 1Ω cups freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese 8 sage leaves 3 Tbs. butter Preheat oven to 450ºF. Cut the tops off the pumpkins and scoop out the seeds. Clean out the center well, and dry off. Brush all open flesh parts with vegetable oil and place in oven on baking sheet. Roast 10 minutes or until carved area looks slightly toasty. Remove from oven and turn off.

Do not overcook, or you will be eating out of a mushy pumpkin!

Heat oil over medium heat in a medium-size Dutch oven or saucepan. Add bacon and onions, and sauté until bacon looks almost cooked and onions are translucent. Add butternut squash and cook another few minutes until squash is tender. Add rice and stir with wooden spoon to coat. Add wine and cook about 2 minutes. Start to add hot stock 1 cup at a time along with salt and white pepper, and simmer. Stir every 2 minutes or so until stock is absorbed, for about 7–10 minutes. Add more stock and repeat until stock is gone and absorbed. Risotto should be cooked but still al dente. Add cheese and pine nuts. Taste and season with more salt and pepper if desired.

When the risotto is almost done cooking, melt the butter in a separate small pan and add sage.

Cook, stirring until butter is brown and sage is crispy. Remove from heat, and pour over risotto.

Stir it in gently.

Scoop the risotto into your pumpkin and serve.

Let’s Party

What do grownups do on the spookiest day of the year? They throw mystery parties with tasty treats, of course! The Desert Baroness, our new local food writer, has all the yummy details for a delicious night of revelry.

Is it really October already? Finally, a break from the heat, time to get into fall activities with the kids, watch football, and for me, time to cook!

The highlight of October at our house is Halloween. But since my kids are all pretty much grown up now, how we celebrate has changed from running door to door for candy chanting “Trick or treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat” to either throwing a Halloween party or going to a scary cornfield somewhere. Also, since we live out in Desert Hills, we don’t get very many trick-or-treaters coming to our door.

I think last year we had a total of three. A new record!

So what do we do for fun then? This year, we are hosting a murder-mystery party.

If you’ve never hosted one, you should!

It’s a great way to get a group of friends together and have a totally fun night. I went online to purchase my party kit at mymysteryparty.com. There were a ton of themes to choose from, but I picked Panic at the Disco. Oh boy, that’s going to bring back some memories! All of a sudden, ABBA songs are playing in my head. Then I’m having visions of my hubby dressed in a white disco suit John Travolta-style and me dressed in something glittery with platform shoes on. Man, I’m feelin’ groovy!

OK, seriously now. Parties are as much about the food as they are about the fun you have. When I throw a party where I want to be engaged with my guests, I try to get as much done ahead of time as possible. Also, when you have a big crowd that may include kids, you want to have a menu that has a little something for everyone and is easy to serve.

This is when finger food is my go-to!

Roast beef spirals Makes approximately 20 1-inch spirals

oz. package cream cheese green onions, chopped cup chopped fresh parsley tsp. salt tsp. pepper tsp. garlic powder oz. sliced deli roast beef sun-dried tomato wraps/tortillas

Combine cream cheese, green onions, parsley, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Divide in half and spread equally on two tortillas. Layer with roast beef slices. Roll and wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 30 minutes or up to a day ahead. Cut diagonally into half-inch slices when ready to serve.

Local fitness instructor Desiree Robbins offers tips on how to get through the Halloween season without packing on the pounds.

Halloween is the holiday that tests even the most body conscious among us. If you’re a mother like me, you know that Halloween means buying and receiving tons of candy. Your kids will probably be hyped up on sugar for the next few weeks, throwing wrappers all over the place, and inviting you to partake in the artificially flavored and high-calorie “food.” Being human, you remember how amazing those little morsels tasted as a kid and cannot help but pop them into your mouth!

You’re not alone. Millions of other people are suffering from the same thing!

They want to keep those toned abs but still indulge in a little Halloween treat!

I am here to tell you that there is good news: you can have the best of both worlds if you follow these simple steps for success!

First step: do not skip your workout.

It’s always important to work out on a regular basis, but during a season when society is almost forcing you to eat candy, it’s even more important to stick to routine. All you need is 15 minutes to get in an amazing workout! Don’t make the excuse that you don’t have time because of parties and planning. Get online, find a fun high-intensity interval-training workout you enjoy, grab a friend or your significant other, and work it!

Second step: plan ahead. If you know you’re going to a party where junk food will be on display, then eat something first! Try starting with a little warm or hot lemon water. This simple drink will warm up your metabolism and aid in di-

gestion. Both are things that you want firing on all cylinders when eating something out of the ordinary. Follow that drink up with a healthy snack like pineapple, homemade Lärabar balls (find recipes online), or a delicious protein shake. Doing this will ensure that you eat less while out and give you the nutrients you need.

Discipline is the third and hardest step. When you are in the midst of the mayhem, have a few things in mind you want to try, and stick to them! You go out with your kids trick-or-treating or perhaps to a friend’s party and see a bag full of different candy. Instead of just sticking your hand into the bag and eating whatever you pull out, think ahead!

If you particularly like Milky Ways and there are none there, don’t eat anything!

Just because something is in front of you doesn’t mean you must eat it. Wait till the next house or party to grab one. Once you’ve had your piece, do not continue to eat more!

You’ve had your cake and eaten it, too, so now what? Well, if you were following these steps, you should have little to no bloating, but if you find that those abs are just not looking the same as the day before, try sipping some peppermint tea or doubling your intake of regular water.

Water is not just important to regulate bodily functions but it’s also essential for weight loss. It will naturally flush out toxins and aid in removing bloat. Pep-

permint tea will give your digestive system a little boost by helping food pass through your stomach more quickly.

Finally, it never hurts to add in a little extra ab workout. Like with every other muscle in the body, you don’t want to work them out every day. Every other day is perfect and will keep those muscles looking toned.

A More Serious Side of Cosmetics

Local beauty expert Jacqueline Starr-Hubert talks “cruelty-free” labeled products.

As consumers, we are all motivated for different reasons when selecting cosmetics. Some are driven by moral standards, price, or promises made in the way of results. I find “crueltyfree and vegan” cosmetics most interesting. As a professional in the industry I am trained to question everything. What is printed or promised isn’t necessarily the truth. Although we have groups such as PETA to help set standards, who really does set and enforce those standards? The government has created laws for the protection of lab animals but also states that it is difficult to enforce those standards.

The University of Missouri and Oregon researchers believe a legal definition for what constitutes “cruelty-free” labeled products should be determined and manufacturers should be required to abide by the legal use of the label. Many consumers intentionally buy products manufactured in ways in ways that do minimal harm to animals. Many businesses use the term cruelty-free to attract buyers, giving consumers the impression that no animal testing was used while manufacturing and testing the products. However, that is not always the case.

“Because there is no legal standard for what is and isn’t cruelty-free, consumers are vulnerable to deceptive advertising,” says Joonghwa Lee, a doctoral candidate at the University of Missouri School of Journalism. “A company may claim their product is cruelty-free, but there still may be some animal testing done somewhere along the manufacturing process.

This could lead to consumers being tricked into buying products that they do not support.”

A second category also connected to the protection of animals is vegan cosmetics. Vegan makeup products are cosmetics that do not use ingredients derived from—or tested on—animals. Many people associate “vegan” with a kind of diet choice. Often when a person chooses a vegan lifestyle for philosophical reasons, her selections go beyond food to the consumer products she uses in her daily life, including cosmetics. Additionally, vegan makeup does not just mean cruelty-free or not tested on animals—it also means no animal derived ingredients are used in making the product. Many natural and cruelty-free companies cannot label their products “vegan,” as some natural skin care and makeup companies use ingredients such as honey or goat’s milk. In a vegan cosmetic, any ingredient derived from animals cannot be used.

It is a personal choice which makeup we purchase and use. After researching more deeply, I must admit I was taken back with the data. The following is taken right off the PETA website: “As you read this, hundreds of mice, rats, cats, dogs, birds, rabbits, monkeys, and other animals are dying in cruel and unnecessary medical experiments and product tests. In fact, 219 animals are killed every minute in a U.S. lab. They die in pain, alone, without a gentle touch or a soothing voice. Animal studies teach us nothing about the health of humans because animals of different species absorb, metabolize, and eliminate substances differently from humans. The truth is that testing on animals is bad science: it’s unreliable and unnecessary.”

A Few Brands That May Not Be In Compliance (according to logicalharmony.net) The following brands may not be cruelty-free or vegan. This could mean that they themselves engage in testing, through a third party, as required by law, or use ingredients that are tested on animals.

There are many vegan and cruelty-free cosmetics available locally. I’ve found some great eye shadow kits complete with nude matte shadows, shimmery shadows, and blush right at my local Walgreens, and even my local grocery store carries a few of these. This industry is filled with many quality products to meet each and every individual’s needs.

This subject can be controversial and some people are very passionate about it.

If my readers have not figured out by now, my personal favorite is Motives Cosmetics.

Although it is not “vegan” it is paraben free and contains a very high quality of minerals.

The best part is that it is very affordable. The choice is yours. Being in this business for years, I can tell you that not everything you read is true. Do your own personal research if you are passionate about the subject of animal cruelty. Find what works best for you and make the very most of it.

Remember—Keep it simple, have fun, and be savvy!

I read recently that the modern man spends an average of five months of his life shaving.

Like you, I can think of better things I’d rather do with my time. During the Middle Ages, a beard was a symbol of power and honor, while in ancient India, the length of a beard was a display of dignity and wisdom.
