From The Publisher

Positive Thinking & Living In Sufficiency I still remember what Prart Aroonrungsi or widely known in short as Arjarn Prart, one of the country’s most respect gurus in music and the founder of Prart Music Group (PGM), the country’s only inspiring musical institute and the publisher of Overdrive guitar magazine and other music-oriented magazines, said about the success of his musical institute that comes from the balance of what he can do and plans to do. Quoted as saying that “Just like a theory of His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej that we have held in mind, we’ve gradually grown up step by step. We’ve done what we are and what we believe, we’ll do what we are dexterous and confident, we’ll do what we think we can handle and control it.” It’s completely true and if you take it into deep consideration, it a bid resembles to what The Bible said “We cannot always have everything that we thing necessary for enjoyment, but we can learn to enjoy what we do have.” Sufficiency is what I am telling you and I personally raise this issue due to the fact that many people have already known that we are uncomfortably living in the face of the global economic downturn and instability of domestic economic crisis, including the uncertainty or the mounting concern of political stalemate in Thailand as I finished December issue while I was living in Japan to experience colorful autumn season. Well, the autumn in Japan, we can see plenty of colors from autumn leaves, but in Thailand, we don’t have autumn season anymore, but we can see politic-related Red & Yellow and other social partiality in attitude in the wake of the amnesty bill believed to be in favor of the self-exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. The situation at the moment is unpredictable, but we hope we can come up with the realistic approaches together to pull Thailand out of the doldrums. Do you still remember? The real victor is not the one who’s never fall or faced with failure, frustration and disappointment, but the one who can rise in every time he or she fails. The more we fail, the stronger we will be and that the root of the saying “We have learned from the past lessons” Sometime, the victory in life is also decided on how positive you are. Nothing is too bad and too good. It can be fortunate and unfortunate things can possibly be the regular guest to visit your life. We extremely believe that there is the best way out of a problem if you are patient, try your best, and be positive. Positive thinking is a mental attitude that admits into the mind thoughts, words and images that are conductive to growth, expansion and success. It is a mental attitude that expects good things or favorable results. We think this is a good time to test how positive we are in trouble. The world’s sluggish economy, sub-prime situation, political uncertainty, the earthquake in Japan as I experienced the 5.5 magnitude in Tokyo on Nov 8, very excited actually, and the nearly non-stop increasing fuel price help make the situation worse. I think sometime we should seriously apply the theory of sufficiency economy that the King of Thailand, The King Bhumibol Adulyadej, has taught us for more than decade years.

The Next Step

To Enjoy Modern Beach-Side Life In Style by Rangsan Srirat / Photos courtesy Amari Hua Hin

Thailand has obviously gained the reputation as one of the must-visited leisure destinations in East Asia for decades. The number of sought-after beaches and hectic coastal cities counting from Pattaya, Hua Hin, Samui, and Phuket forms as the incredible “WOW” factor that has catapulted the country to be a glistering pearl of Asia worth for spending your vacation. This also includes the sprawling beautiful and serene islets and the unscathed underwater world that can no less give you a glimpse of Maldives, actually.

S

o, it comes with no surprise that the country’s star attractions like Pattaya and Hua Hin will see the great influx of foreign tourists or discerning travelers, more investment, the smorgasbord of first-rate hotels and resorts, restaurants, night scenes, and certainly beach-fronted residential buildings so as to serve sophisticated foreigners and local people wishing to stay for a longer period of their honeymoon or just for good.

Lifestyle Development In Pattaya Pattaya, as the special administration of Chonburi province, has been developed from the sleepy town and roadside fishing village to be the star attraction of the country. It becomes the nearest hectic beach vacation that discerning travelers have to visit after Bangkok. People are getting increasingly fond of staying at seaside town or dwelling at beachfront residence while the neon-lit Pattaya is, in the same time, loaded with new and renovated residence worth for a romantic vacation. The sleepless city of Pattaya is currently on the verge of transforming itself into a luxury destination. Most of luxurious and modern residences in Pattaya are increasingly depending on the latest in “Green concept, ranging from a sophisticated water recycling system to the use of hot air from air conditioners to provide self sufficient hot water. Other features include the latest in high-speed elevator technology and automated systems to seal off upper level balconies in high wind conditions. Meanwhile, the surrounding facilities will feature such intimate and convenient recreational facilities as swimming pools overlooking the ocean, multi-tiered sun and shade decks, a poolside bar, a health spa,

gym, jogging track and tropical gardens and Salas or relaxing pavilion. Classy interior and exterior, reasonable price, ideal location, tranquil and peaceful location, variety of entertainments in Pattaya city, and the closest of all the prime destinations from Bangkok are regarded as the key factor for most potential purchasers. The residential project that offers breathtaking sea views and equipped with a wider range of superior facilities,

easy access, plus cutting-edged design will most gain attention. The international standard of security, after-sale service, additional benefits, and area for leisure activities are also what discerning customers increasingly take into their consideration. Houses that are located near or within the city center can provide you with modern entertainment and commercial opportunities, but the drawback is the high cost of property within the city. On the other hand, if you want somewhere peaceful, out town residences are perfect and yet cheaper. Meanwhile, having a trustworthy agent is essential when you buy a property in Pattaya. You should discuss with an expert beforehand and should look further than just style and comfort. The superficial appearance might absolutely catch your attention, but its functionality is far more important. December 2013

Hua Hin is regarded as a reason why Thailand has been proved as a prime sailing and the heart of marine leisure destination of Southeast Asia. Hua Hin was virtually found in 1920 as the quiet fishing village and has seen a great influx of new resort development since then. It becomes a popular fascinating retreat for both Thai people and westerners given that it’s proximate to Bangkok. The affectionate serenity, friendly sea, white beach, golf course, beautiful waterfalls and mysterious caves, and local art, culture, nearby

attractions, including the nearly non-stop yearly fests are the reason why so many local and international travelers have the passion to own a second home here in Hua Hin and the nearby Cha-Am district, 18 kilometer north of Hua Hin, which has also seen the steady growth of foreign buyers. Cha-Am might be your choice of beach living in serene ambiance. It offers an idyllic beach hanging while it can provide all essential services and easy links to other cultural and natural sightseeings while price of seaside property is not so expensive. Most of the residential buildings in Hua Hin are generally designed in low-rise style or villa style, featuring private swimming pool and cozy al fresco living area. The Exceptionally

Blurred House With Modern Twisted

By Bild Architects

18

December 2013

The first in a series of studies into the adaptation of vernacular Australian suburban typologies, ‘Blurred House’ in Melbourne, Victoria, is a major renovation and extension to an original 1930’s Californian bungalow in Melbourne’s inner-north. Reacting to the established convention of jarring juxtaposition of existing ‘old’ and introduced ‘new’ architectural elements ; the ‘Blurred House’ offers an alternative proposition; that of a blurring between ‘old’ and ‘new’ to produce a hybrid. Gradually transitioning from the vernacular to the contemporary, the division of architectural elements is deliberately ambiguous, producing a unique formal and visual language.

Reflecting the formal strategy of transition, rooms at the front of the property are left largely unadulterated, remaining more enclosed.

V

iewed from the street, the house appears largely unchanged, with a small clerestory window the only hint of reconfiguration. Both internally and externally; moving through the house, new materials, spatial characters and formal language is progressively introduced. By the time of arrival in the back yard, the house has evolved into a different building; no longer recognizable from its original starting point; an architectural ‘rabbit in a hat’. Reflecting the formal strategy of transition, rooms at the front of the property are left largely unadulterated, remaining more enclosed. On the other hand, living spaces to the rear are progressively more open and interconnected

embracing the garden and pool areas. These varied spaces respond to different ‘modes’ of living, with different volumetric, acoustic, and light qualities. Whilst these spaces are linked to a greater or lesser degree, they are not ‘open plan’ in a conventional sense, rather configured in a more nuanced distribution of distinct spaces and functions. A hybrid of both old and new, oscillating between the past and present, the building sits comfortably in the street scape as something familiar yet alien. Distinct from both the area’s new housing and the original suburban fabric the ‘Blurred House’ is neither little red riding hood or the big bad wolf, somewhere in between. December 2013

White Is Relaxing,

Timeless & Stylish

In Kitchen

By Billy J. Scott / Photos courtesy White Kitchen Island

The experts have said classic ivory color schemes are always in style, especially when it comes to kitchens. “White” is the perfect background color for almost any other color. White is also easier to keep clean because dirt is more visible than with other colors. But some society in the world, white is stylishly timeless, offering the balance in mind and emotional smoothness for culinary creation at kitchen.

20

December 2013

It’s perfect if the kitchen and its space are suitable for you to handle multiple cooks, entertaining, extended cooking sessions, social cooking and more.

S

tylish and timeless – that’s what you think looking at this kitchen for the first time. The color scheme is extremely elegant: chocolate and white, and though the kitchen zone is small, it looks rather spacious. The storage solutions are ideal and everything is hidden inside the cupboards. The kitchen island also works as storage and a dining table – that’s genial because the owners needn’t stretch head over where to put the table. The surfaces are sleek and dark wood and tiles add to the style. Modern kitchen fits the interior well. This kitchen is a perfect

example of modern kitchen designs, minimalist, stylish and with no unnecessary details. Kitchen design is looking very exciting from now until 2014 as several design philosophies are converging and mixing, resulting in kitchens that are highly personal. A large number of home owners want to buy something smart for longevity which translates to neutral finishes for big ticket items such as cabinetry, countertops and flooring. It’s interesting at this time around as white tonality becomes popular in the up market in Thailand as people have different

reasons for finishing their kitchens and the convenience is the key factor before deciding to purchase or redoing kitchen decoration. People are looking for appliances that have convenient features, good value, stylish appearance, quality, and cabinet access and storage should also be convenient, and the kitchen design overall should be convenient to use and move around in. It’s perfect if the kitchen and its space are suitable for you to handle multiple cooks, entertaining, extended cooking sessions, social cooking and more. December 2013

According to professional kitchen designers, cabinetry is the one area to splurge on. They said cabinetry gets used constantly as do appliances, but since cabinetry is made of wood products as opposed to metals and glass that appliances are made of, it is critical that cabinetry be able to perform consistently over time and resist wear for nearly 20 years. Popular Kitchen Colors Trending Many manufacturers have been working on lots of white, off whites, natural wood stains. They continue to be what homeowners want in cabinetry, adding that the whites are a strong 22

leader. Grays, another neutral, remain on the upswing and touches of black add sophistication in the form of featured cabinetry and/or accessories. Countertops tell a similar story as authentic colors and neutrals, particularly warm grays, create an understated look which allows pops of color to be used in the decorative layer. They also stressed the importance of designing the kitchen area with “equal or near equal emphasis on form and function. This means that form does not have to follow function – function can follow form.

T

he S11 House is a testament of energy-efficient practice that was designed around the beautiful idea of the abundance of trees in the tropics located in the established suburb of Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. The existing old house on the site was built in the early 1960’s and had exquisitely become dilapidated and run-down over the years, but the existing trees on the land, including the frangipanis, star fruit, coconut, palm trees, etc have been still retained. A new green tropical house was planned for the site and conceptualized along the lines of a large canopy tree. The large tree canopy would cover and shelter the living spaces underneath it. There were five significant existing trees on the site. Three very old and sculptural frangipanis, a large star-fruit and a coconut palm tree. All these were retained and the new house was set in the midst of them. Much of the demolished old house materials were re-used. Old crushed concrete roof tiles for gravel fill, old clay bricks were cleaned and re-used for feature walls, roofing timbers were used for formwork strutting and propping, old steel were 26

December 2013

all sold off to steel yards, crushed concrete and cement aprons were re-used for backfilling aggregate. The S11 house has a clear north-south orientation for all its openings and windows. The east and west walls were deliberately void of any significant glazed openings and were constructed of better insulated aerated light weight concrete blocks. In addition they were coated in heat reflecting paint in camouflage motif and also shaded by a wire netting screen wall of fruit and vegetable climbers. These would help to reduce much of the heat gain through the east and west walls. The roof is a large, insulated canopy made from recyclable steel metal sheets coated in a light white paint, which minimizes heat absorption. Roof insulation was also used made from 200mm thick rock wool and two layers of reflective foil. The S11 House was designed to achieve the highest level Platinum rating of Malaysia’s Green Building Index (GBI) and finally won the Tropical Building Category of the Asean Energy Awards 2013.

The Matter Of Balancing

Perspective In Design by Rangsan Srirat

“The challenge is not about the ability to create interesting design, but it’s the ability to win the heart of other people, especially when it comes to working with third party or big scale company, which we have to present what and who we are in order to get the approval.”

I

n the world of real estate industry, it’s mistakenly thinking that business and art are like two straight lines that will never across due to their attitude and central goal are far different. But when the market has evolved from the producer-oriented approach to design-led marketing mechanism when people in the up market and discerning travelers are growingly looking for well-designed property and accommodation to match their unique and modern lifestyle, sometime we might have to think about mix and match to bring the balance between art and business in order to create captivating lifestyle development amidst cutthroat competition in designed property market, which people are becoming more brand and design conscious. VASLAB Architecture is a design oriented firm based in Bangkok, presenting expertise in architecture, interior design, and urban design. Founded by Khun Vasu Virajsilp and Khun Boonlert Deeyuen, who got the inspiration from the work of provocative art and architecture movements such as Cubism, Abstract Art, Modernism, Dada, Surrealism and Deconstructivism. The outstanding architecture design includes Honda Big Wing project, Hotel LIT Bangkok, and Hotel Resort Casa de La Flora.

“People have recognized the outstanding personality and character of VASLAB’s conceptual design. Our mind set in architectural design is clear and we are also proud that we are able to translate such concept in design into being functional, livable, and usable in the actual world as it can also be applied with commercial works aside from private residential project. The challenge is not about the ability to create interesting design, which it’s our strength, but it’s the ability to win the heart of other people, especially when it comes to

working with third party or big scale company, which we have to present what we are in order to gain the approval.” “Generally, my idea in design will be related or concerned to the context of construction site and its surrounding area, including the special requirement, which is the corporate identity of a particular customer. Attitude and branding of the customer that I am going to do the design and to work with is also the significant ingredient that I have to focus to create architectural design with outstanding character. And currently I see that branding and the style of architecture have to go ahead together so as to achieve endearing personality and self-identity.” VASLAB is a mature person being able to recognize what and who he is with clear self-identity to introduce the market with the conceptual and deconstructive idea in construction and architectural design. The company has earned the reputation in the architectural design with the outstanding mind-set in oversized layout, flowing space, oblique angle, and pure exposure. Moreover, its ability to mix and match between its own sensory input idea and the corporate identity from the customer has resulted number of winning properties with the touch of enduring appeal, making VASLAB so unique in the genre of conceptually deconstructive

design. It’s generally the architectural concept that can bring you the sense of strength, bold and masculine appearance. “Definitely, it’s also important that we have to understand the kind of key customers, I’ve emphasized on the personality of the target guests, travelers, or the future customers of the residential, hotels or resorts project and use it as a key element before designing, aiming to reflect the unique taste of the customers. Mass and high-end category of customer have different ideas when it comes to style, it’s a must that we have to design and layout a room or residences that can allow the high-end customers enjoy their unique lifestyle in just one villa or residence.” “There is no right and wrong in the taste of interest and the world of design, it’s the matter of how and where you get the inspiration, passion, and influence from that count. Personally, I like any design that can exude the moving motion or can imbue me the dynamic sense. The sense of moving is very magnificent to my principle in design as it’s my personal identity and taste of interest. We’ve made it bold and exaggerated such identity to become

identical personality in architectural design of my company. “It’s common for the art in design for any property project that we have to struggle against the limited budget and something commercially. But majority of our customers already recognized and realized what and who we are, they will eventually give us the leeway and carte blanche to go ahead our own way of design. But, it’s opposite and not so easy working with some giant business conglomerates whose clear brand, personality, and corporate identity. Anyway, I view such situation as the favorable challenge, which is a sign to start learning new things. The quest for the quality design under the limited budget is somewhat a catch-22 situation, which I have to compromise all elements concerned.” December 2013

The three acre premium river front piece of land has been in the Sukosol family since 1973. When Krissada, the third generation inherited it, he was instantly inspired to build a hotel there to house his substantial collection of antiques. Knowing the property had to stand out he brought Bill Bensley on board who is one of Architectural Digest’s ‘Top 100 Designers and Most Creative People’.

ill’s work is entirely original,” Krissada explains, “This shines through in all of his projects, they have character. I love distinct details. Bill and his team understand exactly how to pull these together into a larger work of art.” The concept they came up with was to reflect the European architectural grandeur that King Rama V has brought to Thailand. An influence was certainly the legendary Musee d’Orsay in Paris built in

the Beaux Art style. There is a distinct similarity between the atrium of the hotel and the steel and glass roof of the museum. Knowing the quantity of antiques Krissada would want to display Bill kept to a simple black and white them to create the perfect backdrop for the antique collection to shine. The Educational Trinity For Future Leaders “What Harrow School will do from now on is develop new leaders, since it is today’s children that will be the new leaders of tomorrow in many aspects of the world. Our educational programs are successful at producing the new visionary leaders for a better world.”

62

December 2013

P

eople have different perceptions in mind when they picture good, quality people, as there are many external factors required to form the kind of person who will go on to enjoy a happy adult life. Starting from childhood, we can’t deny that the relationship between parents and their children is definitely the key ingredient at home, but if the parents have the opportunity to send their children to a school that features an all-round educational approach, parental infusion, and enhancing environment, then there’s a guarantee of a successful livelihood, responsible leadership, and considerable personal fulfillment for their children. Sharing this issue with us is the educational veteran Mr. Michael Farley, Head Master of Harrow International School Bangkok in Thailand. I sat down for a one-on-one interview with him to discuss the energy of the school and the key to success in creating responsible leaders for the future. Harrow International School Bangkok is a boarding school that also emphasizes the parental element as there is a very strong triangular relationship between children, teachers, and parents. If that trinity works well, then the school will be successful and an environment is created in which students are happy and contented to learn. “The school is now 16 years old, like a teenager with the chance to do so many things, but I viewed that there are still improvements to be made. So, for me it’s the perfect opportunity as a Head Master with proven experience to come and work here at Harrow where there is a strong academic programme, a supportive environment, superb pastoral care, guiding principles and great adventurous leadership activities as well,” says Michael Farley. “The school has a great future of development and growth ahead of it. It’s really a place that I want to take to the next level.” “Whatever change I’ve brought to Harrow, it is the understanding of the academic, the learning programme and the transferable learners’ skills that children in the 21st century need if they are going to be successful. They need to be able to communicate, collaborate, be resilient, be resourceful, and they need to be critical thinkers. So, we thought very carefully about developing our curriculum in order to create future leaders for a better world. I’m very keen to see the students become independent and capable of recognizing what they want to develop within themselves,” he adds. Harrow International School Bangkok was established and gained its license to operate in the network of international school in Thailand in 1998. The School has approximately 1300 students, both boys and girls, representing diverse nationalities ranging from 18 months to 18 years old. As the school is based in Bangkok, what Mr. Farley wants the school to do for Thailand is to develop an absolutely

unique institution where 400 boarders, 800 senior students and a total of 1,500 students will receive quality educational programs and learning opportunities. Harrow is not just only developing academically outstanding students, but international citizens whose concern for social responsibility will help to make the world a better place. That’s what Harrow can do for Thailand from now on, to create the next generation of leaders to steer the country to even greater success. Harrow International School Bangkok is undergoing an industrial evolution to help transform the education of its students, utilizing high-tech equipment for the benefit of their learning. Harrow will soon become a leading boarding school in Southeast Asia due to it’s dynamic, ever changing nature, the quality of the students and not forgetting the quality of teaching. Mr. Farley believes that the school will have space for 400 boarders who will experience

with a range of extra-curricular opportunities in the form of clubs and activities after school, that include golfing, scuba diving, and sailing. These are designed for the fantastic, enriched school and life experience that goes beyond just the curriculum. So, three core elementsAcademic, Pastoral Support, and the Extra Curricular become the guiding principle to bringing success to Harrow. “I consider that the school now operates as a triangle and its three corners represent the children, the school, and the parents. And if you have each corner working well together, what will happen is a synergy of the three most important relationships which will allow the student to be complete. So, I think it’s important for parents to have an understanding what the school is doing for their children, what the school’s programs are and our intention to develop the students.” “It is clear that in difficult situations around the world, leaders are failing their communities,

an intensive school and life experience supported by house and academic staff 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, aiming to create mature citizens with determination and the ability to collaborate, solve problems and think critically. “Dynamism in school is exactly the same as dynamism in the world of business. All academic institutions have to be dynamic and constantly looking for innovation and improvement. So, we have been on the search for innovations with advanced education technology, educational programs, and psychological and scientific knowledge to improve learning opportunities of all children through new technology.” Harrow International School Bangkok has been regarded as a role model of continual development for a better educational environment as sustainable development is part of Harrow’s philosophy and guiding principle to create tomorrow’s leaders. All children are provided

their countries and more importantly the world they all live in. So, what Harrow can do now is look to the future, developing new leaders, as our children today can be the new leaders of tomorrow. Our educational programs hope to be successful in producing the new visionary leaders for a better world. That’s our challenge,” he stresses. Many parents who send their children to an international school expect them to be able to enter university afterwards. It’s necessary that they prepare and encourage their children to become more independent and confident people. The internationally accredited Harrow School is the place to be, they feature facilities that can make children become independent, as international students should be. Encouraging their pupils towards leadership is their major whole school focus.

Double the success! To have one pair of twins achieve exceptional Cambridge examination success may not be particularly uncommon in a school and to have two sets is a noteworthy coincidence; to have three sets of twins achieve this is in one academic year is truly remarkable and is exactly what came to light at Harrow International School Bangkok when the IGCSE and A Level results were published recently. Vanessa and Kayleigh, who have been at the School for two years, achieved no less than sixteen As between them, a figure which includes fourteen A*s, at IGCSE. The girls are thoroughly enjoying the Harrow Bangkok experience which Kayleigh describes as ‘like being in a big family’ where students are encouraged to succeed; her sister Vanessa clearly enjoys the broad range of activities offered by the School’s ‘Leadership in Action’ programme which, along with competitive House events, she describes as creating ‘a true Harrow spirit’. Twins Smile and Smart have just graduated from the School having completed their A Levels. The brothers, who have been at the School since Year 9, are now enrolled at Imperial College, London where they are both reading Mechanical Engineering. The twins are keen sportsmen who joined the School as Sports Scholars and who, as well committing themselves to sports activities, had

64

December 2013

also played a part in the various community projects the School offers. Both were active within the School’s ‘House’ system and both became House Captains during their time at Harrow Bangkok; for Smart, one of the benefits of the House system was the opportunity to work as part of a team, whilst another was ‘the chance to interact with students from different Year Groups’. For Smile, it was the support given to students with a particular interest that impressed him; ‘if you have a passion for anything, say sports or drama, the teachers at Harrow Bangkok will give their full support and help in any way they can’. Also graduating from Harrow Bangkok were twins Gift and Guy who joined the School fourteen years ago as Kindergarten pupils. Both achieved a remarkable A* in each of their four subjects at A Level; Gift is now enrolled at Imperial College, London where she is reading Chemical Engineering while her brother Guy is ‘down the road’ at King’s College where he is reading Medicine.

Again, both Gift and Guy flourished not only academically at Harrow Bangkok; both were very actively involved in the School’s activity programme. Gift particularly enjoyed the ‘Model United Nations’ programme which aims to raise awareness of global issues and which gives students the opportunity to meet like minded individuals from schools across the South East Asia region. As regards the lessons she learned at Harrow Bangkok, Gift says, ‘keep moving forward, never give up and be the best that you can be.’ We leave the last word to Guy, who remembers the satisfaction of working with the local community during the floods of two years ago: ‘I think I have made the most of the vast opportunities offered by Harrow Bangkok, particularly in terms of giving back to those who are less fortunate than myself. Will I make the world a better place? I will certainly try not to make it any worse.’

The Innovator

Of Design For Happiness

Design property is still the largest asset class in property investment and we’ve seen the rapid development of high-end properties in Thailand and Asia. It’s now commonplace for property developers to combine products and build an innovative mix of a condominium and a hotel or a resort and a residence within the same plot and then market the entire project as something that will offer investors promising returns. Also, it is a smart way forward for savvy developers to have a stunning range of limited units in order to excite the market and bring customers a sense of uniqueness. I am not so sure if such initiatives are key to increasing earning potential, but to guarantee a sustainable success, developers must do more. I believe that to fully exploit a new project there should be continued development of the product with innovative idea in architectural design so that it remains a totally unique, one of a kind phenomenon in the marketplace.

R

ecently, I did a real-time online interview with Korean architect Changki Yun, Chief Executive Officer, Kyungam Architects Associates Limited, an Asia’s leading architectural firm that has broken the boundary in design and brought the iconic and phenomenal lifestyle in design to modern society. The company is a forward-looking pattern of innovative design and it is thus attempting to foresee what consumers will be demanding several years down the line. To make sure its next property investment is distinctive beyond comparison, Kyungam Architects is trusting its proven philosophy in innovative design and style and the following is the statement from the its CEO and the behind the success of Kyungam and the new living space for happiness in residence. Residence: The outlook on the urban lifestyle development and hospitality industry in Thailand in the coming years? Changki Yun: A lot of residential cultures in Thailand are expected to see more multiplicity and velocity in the industry. As an architect who has experiences in Thailand Projects, I expect there will be increasing demand in residential projects with the emphasis on conveniences in the business district areas. Housing project in Bangkok and the surrounding area will be showing the strong demand with wide range of style and design for customers.

66

December 2013

Residence: Describe your own interior and architectural style? Changki Yun: I am an architect who seeks the life for pragmatics and elegance, especially the space I create. For example, when I get a design needs from the client, I prefer to get it done with multi-functioned space and room for the residents or all family members. The living area should allow for the use of space within the same floor or area. I need to explain that in the concrete. Watching TV, reading book, drinking cocktail, taking a bath, or doing whatever you would like to do in the same space. So, I’d say that my architectural style is to do the design with the concentrate on spaciousness that allows for the use of space. As for the interior design, I present multi functioned space with the object. I will use furniture and objects to create separation and make small room. Doing so, it can make the resident feel the different emotion within the same space. Residence: Guiding principle in architectural design? Changki Yun: Briefly described, everyone seeks “happiness”. I always wish my design has to make the client happy. For me, doing design is a very rewarding job. Especially when I get good news or positive feedback from the client who’s concerned about the space I designed.

I am an architect who seeks the life for pragmatics and elegance, especially the space I create.

Residence: Most outstanding achievement in architectural and interior design? Changki Yun: My architectural tendency is futurism. About form and Mass of building, I would like to design the building to be very unique one. If you do the research on my design trend, you will realize the design is not universal one. Only my client can hold the special designed building. In addition, I present the space stand for the client’s internal pursuit in the space more than one area. These can be the castle of “batman” or be the bedroom of “Queen Elizabeth” within a client’s budget.

Residence: Inspiration and motivation in design? Changki Yun: There are many things have given me the inspirations. Sometimes, I got the inspiration from a novel or the background in the movie… however; the most basic inspiration is originated from the client. When I interview with client, I can imagine his or her idea, space and can get through their feeling automatically. Sometime, I can immediately come up with the design idea when I visit the actual site or location. Each site for design has its own basic inspiration. Moreover, I can

imagine when I even look at the combination of lights in the space and location. The inspiration can use as a motivation to create the main concept of the design. Everything interacts with the space Residence: The emphasis on the personality of the target end users as a key element before designing any property project to match with the taste and personality of target customers? Changki Yun: I would like to say that architect responds and deals with the space. There is no simple space for human. It always December 2013

My architectural tendency is futurism. About form and Mass of building, I would like to design the building to be very unique one. If you do the research on my design trend, you will realize the design is not universal one. mixes with complicity and multi-used space for human. There are simply existing theories such as living room for family members, kitchen for mother. Such is the matter of personal or common space for use in a house. Each room should be able to be changed or transformed itself from one to another. E.g. from bedroom to hotel suit room, from kitchen to workshop... therefore, the space should be basically multi-purposed for future projects. Residence: The most difficult or challenging thing to finish any residential project? Changki Yun: Commercial space can be renovated whereas residential space. Comparing to commercial building, personal residence is much more difficult because the owner of particular house has been living in the house for long time while family members know the characteristic of their own house or residence. They know what they want and can easily evaluate what is good and what is bad to match their taste of interest and lifestyle. And once the residence is built, they will not do the renovation soon. Residence: Priority and top concern when it comes to designing a new property project or to create a new iconic development? Changki Yun: Trying to do new things is important to me. Sometime it can be an icon of residence when I change my thought and realize specific idea for different trying. Selling point is also very important to do the design. The selling point can be a eye-catching shape or model of the building or lobby of a hotel or condominium or even the bed for sleeping. 68

Residence: How to cope with the influence from marketing or commercial approach? Changki Yun: Basically, I do not copy what other people have done in design but I just get a motivation in design from completed projects by other people. When the client asks me to coordinate with other designers, I will happily work with them because everyone can be a partner of mine. Normally, Most of the time I do design, I will follow my intuitive imagine. Residence: The concern about “Green Concept or environmentally friendly design? Changki Yun: The concept of green is natural and essential element for the architect in recent years; every architect might be adapting such idea to their future project. For the next generation, for the earth, the eco friendly concept of architecture, it will be very important

and common practice prior to finishing any residential or commercial projects as I also respect and accept the green concept to my design. For the effective energy saving space, the system is very important design element, depending on the location, site condition, nation, and client as well.

Traveler

More Than Just

The Japanese Industrial City Story & Photos by Rangsan Srirat

December 2013

Traveling in the eastern world might be difficult as some people might find themselves in the uncomfortable situation in some countries where the majority of people prefer not to speak in English. But, for me, I think it’s a favorable challenge to broaden my horizon of knowledge, culture, living experience, and way of life. And I don’t think it’s the matter of language to have a memorable traveling experience, but it’s about the belief and faith that we have for a country that we are going to visit and if we already have the love and respect for that particular country as the basic, it’s more than okay and surely that your trip will be a very enjoyable one in east Asia.

I

still keep the impressive moments about my seventh visit to Japan in late September 2013 in Kyushu, I didn’t feel lonely because I was surrounded by Japanese people who are helpful, friendly, and spontaneous. My eighth visit to Japan during November 5-19, 2013, for me, it’s as if the legend that keeps on repeating itself endlessly. And I think that there are more wonderful reasons for me and other international tourists to have to get back to the land of Samurai and 2-D cartoon network again than just having raw fish in the country that is fraught with the definition of quality living and easy to live in like Japan. Most of my trips to Japan are both personal and the kind invitation from the Japanese government and Japan Tourism and local partners in Japan as part of the government’s Visit Japan Campaign to enhance tourism industry and inbound travel in Japan. My recent trip to Japan was awesome and fantastic as I visited many places of sensual and cultural destinations in the Chubu and Kyushu to explore the uniqueness, distinctive character, distinguish belief, sense, and spirit of Japan that have still been reserved and maintained. About Nagoya, it’s like Tokyo and other big cities, including Osaka, and Yokohama, the best and effective way to connect to the Nagoya city from the airport is to take the airport rail-link Meitetsu to Nagoya Station. If you travel alone of in a small group, it’s much cheaper taking a train (¥850) than a taxi to access to the city and around as traveling by train can infinitely help you start to get a real touch of Japan since the moment you arrive. Actually, Nagoya is the springboard to other sightseeing in the central part of Japan. There are subway lines, JR line, private trains, Shinkansen, and express way from Nagoya downtown and Nagoya Station to Shirakawa-go World Heritage in Gifu area to the north,

Nagono, Takayama, Ise Shrine and other interesting destinations in Suzuka in Mie area, Toyota, Jazz Dream Nagashima, Nabana no Sato, Iga Ninja Museum, etc. This makes the Nagoya Station quite hectic throughout the year as a result. Even if Nagoya is the country’s forth largest city in Japan, but you can definitely enjoy traveling, dining, and shopping around the up-market area and the underground shopping paradise within day or two days. One-day ticket for all subway line (¥740) helped me a lot to easily access to the short-list of favorable destinations in the city and enjoy the whole day in the central Nagoya, according to the Nagoya shopping and dining guide map available at the airport, all tourist spots and hotel’s lobby. Dining options and side-street restaurants are, of course, not as popular in number as in Tokyo, but it’s explicitly cheaper to have a bowl of Soba or Udon and other set of Japanese rice and side dishes. For a one day shopping, don’t forget to check around Osu Kannon Temple, the eastern and western part of Nagoya Station, Sakae area to Osu Shopping Arcade through walking down on Otsu-dori. Just for a colorful lifestyle, there will be the fantastic Osu Cosplay parade during the first

weekend of each month through the street around Benshoji Temple. If you are on the mood for traditional Japanese tea, make a wish, or look for a tranquil setting for a peace of mind and relaxation, take Meijo Subway Line to Yagoto Station and take a visit at a Buddhism temple-Yagoto Koushoji. Traveling in Nagoya will not be complete without paying a visit to feel the sense and spirit of Japanese at Nagoya Castle, a restore Japanese castle, which was burnt down and destructed during the Pacific War in 1945 and was finished restructuring in 1959. Visiting Nagoya Castle actually reminded me about the national identity and the unique personality of Japan that Japaneses have shared an endeavor to preserve its own art and culture. And they can successfully maintain the well-balance between the modern touch in electronic, technologies, industrialization and capitalism era. December 2013

Living In A Dream City Of Quality Life Many people have told me Tokyo could be all or nothing at all for a new comer who has never visited the city before while most people cannot afford speaking in English and I might find myself in difficult situation. I have never cared or even paid attention to what they are saying. Wow!, it sounds challenging for me and I am very exciting to be able to travel as far as Tokyo, Japan, to explore this neon-lit city. 74

December 2013

Having knowledge of Japanese language or the local language of the country you are visiting is highly necessary aside from English language, especially when it comes to exploring a country where people have strong sense of nationalism. It’s my fault being unable to speak Japanese language, but in the same time I don’t believe that language will be the obstacle for a memorable stay in Tokyo as I’ve always said that Japanese people are friendly and spontaneous. I had a very good time in Tokyo

traveling alone to many essential stops and I didn’t feel lonely anymore since Japanese people that I dealt with are willing and welcoming even if I got flown when they answered me in Japanese sometime while finding my way from the airport by train to the connecting station in Tokyo. The currency at the time I visited in November 2013 was about Bt32 per ¥100, which is the best rate ever to enjoy shopping as Thais don’t have to apply for Japanese Visa

anymore from now on for the 15-day short-time visit. Anyway, I think I am lucky enough to be able to visit one of the world’s best places as Tokyo was ranked top ten by UN Development Programme (UNDP) for the country worth for living. It comes with no wonder why Japan is listed on the UNDP’s top ten index due to its indisputable quality of living, life expectancy, gross domestic project, education, security and wellness, the order of the city, food hygiene, cleanliness, and the efficiency of subway lines, state-of-the-art transportation and infrastructure system that I witnessed. Travel in Tokyo is so convenient, tourists and commuters can only bring along Tokyo city map along with JR railway and subway route map to easily reach your preferable destinations in Tokyo within a few minutes while the price is not so expensive. It’s not so complicated to understand the Spiderman’s web-alike network of subway. Just forget about taking Taxi or airport limousine if you wish to get the touch of Japanese. Shinjuku can be accessed by JR Yamanote Line, Subway Oedo Line,

I had a very good time in Tokyo traveling alone to many essential stops and I didn’t feel lonely anymore since Japanese people that I dealt with are willing and welcoming even if I got flown when they answered me in Japanese sometime while finding my way from the airport by train to the connecting station in Tokyo.

Anyway, Shinjuku is the heaven for shoppers, it’s a sleepless spot of Tokyo, where you can shop for brand-name shoe, cloths and accessories at Japanese leading stores, fashionably designed products dotted along sub-streets, and goods from China with cheaper price, and the plethora of games shops, small bars and street-side bistro Japanese cuisines as my first mouthwatering bowl of Soba began in this area.

Heaven For All Enthusiastic Shoppers Marunouchi Line, and Shinjuku Line. Personally, I prefer JR Yamanote rather than using subway because it provides me with the view of metropolis and residential characteristics of the city. Shinjuku is a bustle and busy center where you can see crowd of people walking and passing through the main street for shopping or individual propose. The area is mixed with serene business districts and hustled with well-designed high-rise government and office buildings. Actually, it’s a fantastic collision of bargain stores, fashionable miscellaneous products, and the medley of delightful cuisines. Walking alone even at night time in Tokyo is safe, but some areas in Shinjuku, tourist, especially female, walk alone is not recommended. 76

December 2013

It takes ¥160 for JR Yamanote Line to go to Shibuya, but walking allows me to fully see the city life scenes and get in touch with Japanese things along the street from Shinjuku to Harajuku and Shibuya. What I was impressed very much in Tokyo is the way of life of the people and their concern about the environment, they prefer to take train or public transportation rather than driving personal car to get their destinations and when it comes to crossing the street, they will wait until the green light even if there is no any coming vehicles at the time. That’s an amazing eye-opener for me when I saw a huge crowd crossing the main street in the same time at Shibuya, Shinjuku, and Ginza. The highlight of Harajuku area is Meiji Shrine and Takeshita-dori Street. Nestled in the extensive ever-green parkland, the shrine was

built to dedicate to the Emperor and Empress Meiji. The shrine is also a good example of Shinto architecture that attracts large number of visitors during the festive season and holiday break. The shrine is sometime used for holding the traditional Japanese wedding procession. The opposite is the frenzy Takeshita-dori Street, the walking and shopping street where new youth cultures and fashions transpire on an almost daily basic. The street is a center of Japanese fashion for young people; it’s fraught with street-wear clothing and accessories suitable for generations to make a new look, including some restaurants until Meiji-dori Avenue, where you can walk to Shibuya, a popular and hectic variety shopping and entertainments in eastern Tokyo. Cross the intersection to Shibuya Center Gai Street, you will meet busiest part of Shibuya, which is full of Japanese restaurants, bars, fashionable shops, department stores, and youthful café. Actually, Shibuya is actually the popular place for teenage or youth to hang around and learn the trends in youth fashion along streets. I was very surprised to see Japanese youth, teenage, and other women wearing in eye-catching costume to express their identity. Beautiful and sexy women wearing short pants and black stocking, and fashionable boot can generally be seen at Harajuku, Shibuya, and Shinjuku.

Upscale Living In Ginza Actually, cost of living in Tokyo is quite high, it’s nearly impossible to fine a budget or economy accommodations per night while the Japanese Ryokan or the traditional inn is rarely found in Tokyo. Japanese foods available in Tokyo are quite extensive and variously done in style. Anyway, eating out in Tokyo is not cheap, but the middle-end bistros with affordable rate can still be found at street-side restaurants around Yurakucho Station, Marui (OIOI) and INz department store. You can also find bistro Japanese restaurants and western-infused dining venues from Ginza through Shimbashi Station. Once I heard from Japan National Tourist Organization (JNTO) that Tokyo is soon to become a card-based consumer society, I felt a lit bid panic since I don’t have a card to pay for daily living in Tokyo. But when I arrived and actually lived in Tokyo, I learnt that Tokyo is still cash-oriented. Coin and banknote is still necessary, I think, as I saw people use coins to pay for JR train ticket and pay in cash in Daimaru, OIOI, INz, HMV, and other luxury stores. Most of Japanese restaurant use vending machine, which you have to order and pay for your favorite food from a vending machine placing inside/outside the restaurant. It’s useful for tourists that price and examples of food are obviously listed and shown in front of the

restaurant. Simply, you just have your preferable dish in mind and go to vending machine, then machine will print out a ticket for you and you go inside and give it to restaurant staff so that they will make meal for you. Tsukiji is the fish and grocery market on Harumi-dori Avenue, not far from Ginza. Japanese food is famous for its freshness for the interest of health, so I felt my trip will not be complete without checking out this fresh market to experience fresh sushi at one of restaurants on Uogashi-Yokocho Street. Tsukiji is the wholesale market for trading fish and seafood, which claims that more than 450 types of shellfish and fish are managed here by wholesalers. Here, you can find fresh fish and seafood and shop for preserved fish and seafood, and seaweed.

December 2013

77

When it comes to shopping and street walking, Ginza is completely different from Shinjuku, Harajuku, and Shibuya. Ginza is the nucleus of high-end or up-market style while shopping at Shinjuku and Shibuya is not as classy and sophisticated as Ginza’s. From Ginza to Nihombashi, it has been developed as a commercial center and you might find that you don’t need to enter into the air-conditioned shopping store since the world’s famous brand names are welcoming you along the well laid-out roads and street commercial blocks. Meanwhile, strolling along Chuo-dori Avenue, which will be closed to be walking street during the weekend, and making a stop at Mitsukoshi shopping store or Matsuya Ginza is also not the bad idea when the night fall in Ginza.

A Moment Of Serene Cultural Tokyo is a buzzing metropolis, the amazing line up of bars, shops, huge crowd, café, bistro restaurants alone streets at Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ginza, Marunouchi, and Nihombashi can make you fall in love and addicted to the light and color in the street. Meanwhile, the friendliness of people, cleanliness in the street, welcoming atmosphere at wherever you go, the fast and convenience of JR and subway line, cute and beautiful Japanese teenagers and working women are as if the timeless color to seduce tourists to street walk from the morning until late night. Tokyo is a city that is concerned about the environment, there are many outstanding public parks in Tokyo, including Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, Shinjuku Chuo Park, Yoyogi Park, Hamarikyu Garden, Hibiya Park, Koishikawa Park, Rikugian Park, Ueno Park, and the large scale of greenery area around the Imperial Palace, where I managed walking and breathing the fresh air in the morning and evening. Japanese people come to this area to relax, exercise, biking, and take picture 78

December 2013

of the prestigious palace. Such lush tropical gardens, spiritual shrines, and temples act like the serene cultural spot among the hustle and bustle of the city.

Hustle In Ueno, Asakusa, Roppongi I took JR Yamanote Line to Ueno Station to check the route since the station is also the terminal for Keisei Express train bounding for Narita Airport. Actually, train that bounds for Narita can be found at Tokyo Station by advanced-booking ticket for JR Narita Express (about ¥3,000) or JR Rapid Train (¥1,280) on Sobu Line. Another option is the subway Asakusa Line that connects to Keisei Oshiage Line to Narita Airport, the price is nearly the same with taking JR Rapid Train at Tokyo Station. It also depends on where you are during the last day in Tokyo. If you are at Shinjuku area, just take subway Shinjuku Line to Motoyawata Station (¥400) and then change to Keisei Express at Keisei Oshiage Line (¥1,000). You can also use JR Chuo Line-Sobu Line to Narita. It’s convenient as well. Ueno actually reminds me the combination of flea and bargain markets in Bangkok, where you will meet with daily consumer products, shoes, clothes, miscellaneous goods, fresh and preserved fish and other dried foods while Akihabara is the hotpot of cell phone, electrical appliance with latest models and musical instrument. They are not so special for me

while most of products sold here can be available in Thailand. I took about 30 minutes look around before taking subway Ginza Line to Asakusa, one of Tokyo’s downtown areas. The highlight is the narrow back street and row of old-style buildings, including traditional shopping for lamp and lantern, kimono, sake sets, hand-made products, craft souvenirs, silk, painting pictures, and Japanese-style sweet. Roppongi is slated to be Tokyo’s new business zone and it features a handful of museums, well-designed office buildings, exhibition space, hotels, gardens, café and restaurants, and galleries. I felt the time was running so fast two days before bidding farewell to Tokyo, my inspiration in music, quality living, and modern technology. Several years ago when I visited Japan for the first time, I told myself before arriving Tokyo that I might not enjoy an impressive and pleasant traveling experience since Japanese people prefer not to speak in English. My attitude has been changed since then when Japanese people that I’ve ever dealt with are so helpful and spontaneous. Now Japan is the home-away home to me and I’d say I had a very good time in Tokyo. You can travel alone with handy guide books, Tokyo map, and subway route map and don’t worry about language. Many people might say that Spring/Summer is just worth a visiting or making a flight to Japan, not so anymore. I think the country is wonderful all year round.

I

have regularly traveled to tourism destinations and commercial provinces both in the northern and southern Thailand during the past 7 years. Fortunately, I have had the chance to sleep at the first rate hotel and resort for more than one. This year I have continually escaped to Phuket and other coastline areas and islands every month. I’ve never get bored and still feel that I only know tourist destinations in Thailand on the surface. The best way is to revisit it again and again as I extremely believe that there are more things to do and to learn than just knowing only the list of well-known tourism spots in a province or a country you once made a stop. December and January are the crucial moment for you and family to spend vacation and share a wonderful time together at some exotic resorts in Thailand or any part of the

world. Even if it’s hard to book a flight at this time around for a lap of luxury comfort at an upscale resort in Thailand, but as I said, a memorable traveling experience in Thailand is endless and timeless. A Flying Start To Paradise On Earth Staying at Anantara is as if venturing into a world of difference and the unique blend of natural comfort and luxury amidst the touch of traditional Thai. I emptied my vacation at Anantara Phuket Resort & Spa for two nights before moving to Phi Phi Island during mid of this year as I remember. Located on the northwest coast of Phuket, Anantara Phuket is nestled within the garden of coconut palms, jasmine, and orchids while the meandering lagoon is adapted and endeavored to create a truly tropical living.

Anantara Phuket boasts totally 83 villas, dividing into Pool Villa, Garden Pol Villas, Lagoon Pool Villas, Sala Pool Villas, and Similan Suite. They are finished with the inspiration of the traditional southern Thai village while the flowering garden featured in each villa is defined by Bill Bensley, an expert in gardening. Each villa features an expansive bedroom, dressing room, indoor bathroom, spacious outdoor area, pavilion or living sala, and outdoor private swimming pool enhanced with a deep terrazzo tub, and hardwood decking. The unexpected surprise is not only about the ability to imitate traditional Thai living in the tropical garden, but also tranquil Mai Khao beach, which is a very stretching and slope beach in Phuket. The culinary aspect is part of the hospitality service industry in which the competition has been heating up for a decade. The idea to renovate to add new exciting dimension and captivating environment to an eatery is becoming the central goal in marketing content that many hotel dining and independent bistros are going to apply in order to live up with the expectation of the existing customers and definitely to attract new clients. This also includes finding out how to create new affordable dishes with new taste in a reasonable portion and price so as to challenge the tongue.

Explicitly, the style between the spa and the hotel is totally different in term of the setting concept and atmosphere. The hotel’s is actually modern and a bit of contemporary, but the atmosphere at the spa is charming and traditional Thai through the use of Thai elements like uniquely-designed silk and fabric, hand-craft decorations, aged-old wooden floor, which they are said have been removed from ancient houses in the northern of Thailand and patched up for a salutary spa sanctuary.
