Break The Ice & Do What You Love People in general might commonly wish you a very happy New Year and have a wonderful full year found as there are many quotes related to New Year available on the internet to choose from. But to me, I might not regularly and simply say “I wish you good health, wealth, success and prosperity, and happiness in the coming years and always” something like that. But for this New Year, I wish you have the opportunity to do what you love or your reflection. This is certainly because I am extremely confident that having the chance to follow your heart and soul doing what you love, all good things and the success will naturally follow suit while tons of the world’s recognized businessmen and women speak the same tone “Do what you love and the money will follow. Embrace your passions and the world will provide.” So, this New Year, “Residence” magazine hopes you will be able to recognize yourself and become successful doing what you love. We have gone through many difficult events, particularly the unpredictable political uncertainty situation since the last quarter of last year until now. Such has been paralyzing the performance and the ability of Thailand to further develop to be ready for the ideal Asean Economic Community (AEC) as expected to be completed in 2015. According to Mr. Stanley Kang, the Chairman of the Joint Foreign Chambers of Commerce in Thailand (JFCCT), foreign investors are still confident about doing business here in Thailand as the country is still a potential destination for foreign investors around the globe. Asean is the future for global growth and the population and size of the AEC is about half of China. After 2015, Thailand will not be seen as one country but it as a region because the AEC is a community. A lot of foreigners will come to invest and the main reason that foreign investors come to Southeast Asia is the economic community formation of AEC, so it’s a must that Thailand should not only plan for just today but should come up with the long-term plan for the future as well. Anyway, even if Thailand might be still viewed by foreign investors that it has strong potential to be one of the leading nations in AEC, but I think we can’t be like a proud man and stop development as neighbors are forging ahead. I think that no auspicious occasion is better than this New Year to change something in life, to bury the hatchet, forge your differences with enemy, forget the time of being at odd with someone over something, call it a day and forge the idea together, start a new life, and make a new you and do what you love even if we all know that it’s not so easy to break the ice. Enjoy reading the January issue; highlights include the business icon Mr. Iwan Sunito, the man behind the success of Sydney-based Crown Group, cool ideas in bedding for a nice sleep, the recovery of natural beauty in Tohoku and the charm of Sendai, including stuff updates about the design and style that’s sure to make you fancy.

Modern Contemporary Bedding Ideas

For Sleeping Well With busy lives full of family, friends and work, our bedroom is oftentimes the place we go to relax and escape everyday life. When done right, a bedroom is a stress-free private sanctuary full of soothing colors, comfortable bedding and plush pillows. Setting that tone is often a challenge, especially when kids often take precedence, but a quick makeover can easily transition even the most in-trouble space.

12

Once you’ve settled on furniture, take time to find a color scheme and decorations that reflect your personality. In the end, if adding new decor and furniture isn’t enough, you can turn your bedroom redesign into a renovation by creating your own master suite, complete with sitting room and master bathroom.

13

A

s you redesign your contemporary bedroom, be sure to consider what both you and your significant other prefer. Your suite is all about you, so don’t worry about using popular trends or appealing to the kids. Because there aren’t many significant remodeling changes to make, figuring out your 14

furniture layout is the biggest decision you need to make. By the time you add dressers, nightstands, armoires and a bed, your space can easily get cramped, so it’s important to figure out what layout provides enough storage yet still leaves open space to move around. Once you’ve settled on furniture, take time to

find a color scheme and decorations that reflect your personality. In the end, if adding new decor and furniture isn’t enough, you can turn your bedroom redesign into a renovation by creating your own master suite, complete with sitting room and master bathroom.

How do I determine my bedroom layout? Before you buy a new contemporary furniture set, be sure to consider the room size. Even though you might need three dressers and two nightstands, you might not have the space. Measure the furniture and visualize where it will go so you can judge what will fit where. Be sure to leave plenty of walking space, and double check that drawers and cabinets have enough room to open properly. When picking your bed spot, think about windows and doors. Even if you have blackout curtains, placing a bed underneath a window might be a bad idea, while even the smallest crack in the door can stream hallway light in as you try to sleep.

How do I pick my bedroom color scheme and decor? Although your color scheme is often a personal opinion, there are some colors that are more relaxing and therefore better suited for your sleeping spot. Studies have found that people with blue bedrooms often get more sleep because of the calmness it elicits. Brighter colors may lead to a better mood, but it also might keep you up longer at night. If you have a significant other, you should also consider using neutral colors so everyone stays happy. Purple and pink might be too feminine, so try variations of green, gray or brown instead. When it comes to decor, try to keep photographs out of the room for added romance, and don’t clutter the space with knickknacks — it can be overstimulating and cause intimacy or sleep trouble.

15

How can I create a master suite? For those looking for a master escape instead of just a nice place to sleep, try adding a sitting room, master bathroom and walk-in closet. Create your own personal reading nook by buying a relaxing chaise lounge, day bed or sofa. You can even add a fireplace and wet 16

bar or coffee bar for those cold winter nights. Finally, ensure you get time in the bathroom each morning by installing one just for you. You can add a relaxing bathtub and makeup vanity for a complete getaway from it all, and be sure to include a nice closet to store your large (and expanding) clothes collection!

Travel Themed Bedroom

for Seasoned Explorers There are a plethora of styles to follow when it comes to bedroom design, many people like a traditional or a romantic themed room that can be dressed up in ornate furniture and frills, but how do we approach the plainer canvas of a contemporary sleep space without the result appearing bland? These masculine bedroom visualizations, from Viz Art, have a very distinct hint of world traveler about them, peppered with maps and yacht sail-like geometry, boat souvenirs and ocean imagery, to make an experienced explorer feel right in their comfort zone.

1. Wood clad walls give the generously proportioned room a cozy cabin feel, reminiscent of times gone by whilst still remaining on trend with modern home interiors. Scattered soft light sources create an intimate atmosphere for lazy evenings plotting the next big adventure, whilst task lighting is available to shed a brighter light on the all important passport search and rescue mission. A canvas above the bed holds an action shot of a yacht on the waves, to sail who rests below off to dreamland. 19

This room has been split into two parts with a half partition wall and retractable doors, to allow the space to flow as one large area, or section off the home office area once the transport arrangements and itinerary for upcoming excursions are all done and dusted. A map mural behind the desk space provides a constant reminder of all the destinations yet to discover, and all the places that teem with fond memories of trips gone by. 20

Floral Arrangement For A Better Living At Home

22

Flowers soften any room and make soft rooms positively dreamy, but they can also add unexpected dimensions to modern, even industrial spaces. Feminine selections are often reduced to a combination of, or a choice between: Lisianthus, Peonies, Roses, Dahlias or Tulips and being the most fashionable of the season, are the first to be featured.

23

J

ust as English Tea-Roses owe their name to the Motherland, long understood is the association of the Orchid, Lilly and Cherry Blossom with Oriental styling and the addition of a single one of these species to an Asian influenced room can solidify its theme. Floral displays are as much about the choice of flower as they are about the choice of vessel. This can largely dictate whether the display will exude an antique or modern feel. The recycling of jars and bottles is not only good for the planet, but great for making a floral statement. Leaving the container, whatever it may be, in its original commercial state will

24

work well in a modern industrial space, but if a vintage look is desired then a rustic paint job will give an old glass jar or bottle a new stylish purpose. A curiosity such as this display of miniature succulents, gives a room an intellectual quality. Interior design, is at the moment, seeing a resurgence in styling worthy of a natural history museum. Specimens from the natural world are being encased in glass in the form of domes, cloches and antique display cases, making for intriguing interiors and stimulating conversation.

Japanese Gardening

Design Idea

According to Japan Tourism’s information, the Japanese garden design is an important Japanese art form that has been refined for more than 1000 years. Gardens have evolved into a variety of styles with different purposes, including strolling gardens for the recreation of Edo Period lords and dry stone gardens for the religious use by Zen monks.

50

Gardens in reduced scale represent famous scenes and places in small and confined spaces. Mountain views and rivers are miniaturized using stones, sand and gravel. Symbolization is used in almost every Japanese garden.

J

apanese gardens derive their beauty from a mixing and blending of different elements: sand, rocks, water, ornaments such as lanterns, water basins (tsukubai), and bamboo fences, natural plants and surroundings. Part of the beauty of the Japanese gardens comes from the symbolic expression of religious Buddhism and Shinto beliefs. The design of the Japanese gardens is based on three basic principles, reduced scale, symbolization, and borrowed view. Gardens in reduced scale represent famous scenes and places in small and confined spaces. Mountain views and rivers are miniaturized using stones, sand and gravel. Symbolization is used in almost every Japanese garden. Raked sand or gravel symbolizes rivers, groupings of stones and rock can represent islands. Shakkei or borrowed view is the use of existing scenery and plants to supplement the garden. The garden design is made in such a way that the existing scenery becomes part of the total design. There are several different styles of Japanese gardens. Karesansui, or waterless rock and sand garden, is a very well known type of Japanese

gardens. This type of garden appeared in the Muromachi period (1333-1568) and is influenced strongly by the Zen-Buddhist doctrine. This type of garden include some though limited plant life, mostly moss, raked gravel symbolizing streaming water, groupings of rocks and stones. A famous example of this type of zen-garden is Ryoanji in Kyoto. Tea gardens - Cha Niwa or Roji Contrary to what one could expect from the name, one does not drink tea in a tea garden. This type of garden has the following elements: Japanese lanteren (toro), crouching water basin (tsukubai), stepping stones (tobi ishi), and a waiting place (machi-ai). Most of the time these are small enclosed gardens. They are the passage to the teahouse where one performs the tea ceremony. It is a passage from the outside world to the inner world of the teahouse. The purpose is to have a peaceful mind before starting the tea ceremony. The tea garden is usually part of a larger garden. The Kimura-en in Kashiwasaki in the province of Niigata is a beautiful stand alone tea garden. 51

Courtyard Gardens - Tsubo Niwa Courtyard gardens are small gardens. It’s not the bad idea if you need to jazz up your life and distance yourself from the usually Pattaya, Bangsaen or Trad.

The exterior architecture of the resort will make you feel the charm and fascination of the bygone days of old Thailand in the 19th century since they hark back to the King Rama V era, the fifth king of Chakri dynasty during RE 126(Religious Education) or AD 1907, the middle of the Rattanakosin era, the time that the king made his formal visit to Europe and that Thailand adopted many of western culture and civilization.

part from the affectionate serenity, friendly sea, white beach or even jelly fish that Hua Hin is renowned for, the cultural resort Wora Bura Resort & Spa helps add the charm of sea traveling at Hua Hin. The resort claims as the country’s first cultural resort with western civilization twists. To honor the King Rama V, you will fascinated with many photos of the king visiting to Europe at the wide-open breezy lobby, the overall construction borrows and offers a glimpse of the Vimarnmek Teak Mension and Maruekatayawan Palaces, the royal residence of the King Rama V in early 1900s while the spa section is based on Ban Puen Palace. All 77 guestrooms and villas represent the uniqueness of Thailand’s 77 provinces, including Hua Hin. Each room is named and themed after a province such as Krabi or Ranong that we slept. Interior of each room is the clear evidence that Thai, at the time, really adopted the western civilization, which looks rather western style, particularly Jacuzzi, balancing with the decoration of 55

various striking photomurals or unique local paintings of Thai way of life of that particular area and province. Balcony affords vistas of stunning serene lagoon and the beautiful sea, especially when the night falls as day time can see only the elderly in bikini, very boring. If you plan to have sunbath or dream of walking hand in hand with your beloved along the sandy beachfront of the resort, forget it since the resort cannot afford the beach for you as a result of low profile location and worse, there are ubiquitous hazard jelly fishes within the circle of 100-200 meters from the resort. But the provided indoor and outdoor activities can no less compensate for you and your family to enjoy for example the adventurous elephant riding and trekking into natural scenery and tropical forests at nearby Elephant Village, including other sightseeing Sam Roi Yod National Park, Pa La U Waterfall and nearby tourist destinations. 56

Q: Overview about the trend and development in design for property in Australia and Asia-Pacific overall? Here in Australia we are seeing a surge of interest from people looking to live closer to employment and transport hubs. Sydney has reached a tipping point – There is a shift in the way people want to live – away from a house in the suburbs towards apartments closer to major hubs and lifestyle amenities. In particular there is an increased demand for apartments built on top of shopping centres. As Sydney’s population grows closer to 5 million there is a huge shortage of supply in the residential apartments market in Sydney. More people are choosing to live close to transport and amenities for a better lifestyle. High-density housing has been popular in Asia for many years and Australia is now catching up. The other main change we are seeing is a preference for well-designed, luxury apartments. Wealthy, young people are looking for more than just a box, they want an architecturally-designed, modern apartments and a high standard of facilities. We are seeing increased demand for our apartments from Asia including as China, Hong Kong, Singapore Malaysia and Indonesia. People want to have confidence in the products they purchase, and through their own research, they clearly see the tremendous investment opportunities offered by Crown Group in Sydney. The demand of Asian market has grown significantly in the last six months with many purchased property as an investment or for their children who are studying in Australia. Q: The outlook on the urban lifestyle development and hospitality industry in Australia in the coming years? Sydney’s café and restaurant culture is booming as young people move closer to hubs as older people downsize earlier they want to spend their leisure time. We are seeing urban spaces – such as parks and plazas become more utilized for fun and recreation. There is a shift towards urban consolidation in Australia. Australians are fast-catching up with the rest of the world and looking to live in a high density

60

developments close to major transport, shopping and employment hubs. Crown Group’s offers Asian-inspired elements such as water features and peaceful gardens, incorporate principles of “Feng Shui” which create private sanctuaries for residents to call home. This is one of the many reasons we continue to attract buyers from all over the world. Q: How do you describe your own style of architectural development? Crown Group developments are premised on the concept of SPACE, which stands for “Substance”, “Prestige”, “Architecture”, “Commercial”, and “Experience”. They can be further explained as follows; - Substance: our customers are looking for a developer with stability, long term interest and capacity to deliver. Prestige: Our developments must project an image of prestige and status, commensurate to our customers’ social status. Architecture: Our customers are affluent buyers who appreciate inspiring and intelligent architecture. Commercial: Our customers are discerning buyers who are looking for commercial benefit in their investment. All Crown’s developments must be unique and accessible to transport and amenities.

We now face the exciting challenge of growing our development capacity while maintaining our vertically integrated structure. The business model Crown adheres to is simple: it is about SPEED AND SCALE. And our philosophy is we want to be big and fast. To achieve Speed and Scale, Crown Group has built a ‘vertically integrated structure’ from acquisition, design, construction and sales and Marketing.

Experience: At Crown we create a total ‘experience’ of arrival, a sanctuary and an oasis to come home to. We are excessive in our attention to the public space by providing a music room, movie rooms, a gym and the experience of nature through creating a very luscious garden. SPACE appeals to ‘head’ and ‘heart’ and defines our style, defines what we can or cannot build and helps us to be consistent in our offering and direction. We build residential developments with a five-star, resort-style feel with expansive gardens. Our award-winning Top Ryde City Living development for example is positioned on one of Sydney’s most spectacular vantage points above Top Ryde City Shopping Centre.

Top Ryde City Living features expansive common facilities including a music room, library, media theatres, indoor and outdoor function areas, a children’s playground and a pool. Q: What should be the pressure or challenge to complete next property development project? Crown Group is committed to remaining at the forefront of sophisticated, resort-style living in Australia. We work hard to remain at the cutting edge of the Australian property industry and to continue to deliver apartments which impress even the fussiest buyers. We now face the exciting challenge of growing our development capacity while 61

maintaining our vertically integrated structure. The business model Crown adheres to is simple: it is about SPEED AND SCALE. I like quote: it’s not the big that will beat the small it’s the fast that will beat the slow,” he said. “Our philosophy is we want to be big and fast.” To achieve Speed and Scale, Crown Group has built a ‘vertically integrated structure’ from acquisition, design, construction and sales and Marketing. Q: Everyone has different ideas when it comes to style. Do you also emphasize on the personality of the target guests, travelers, or customers and use it as a key element before designing? We tailor our apartments to buyers looking for resort-style living combined with well-designed and functional apartments. We have found our buyers fall into three major categories: Firstly, 62

local owner-occupiers, which are predominantly young professional couples, young families and older couples looking to downsize. Secondly, overseas investors looking to tap into the strength of the Sydney property market. These buyers want to buy from a developer with a strong track-record in Sydney. We have successfully completed more than a dozen residential projects in Sydney, we have been awarded four of Australia’s most prestigious property awards this year and have a pipeline of projects worth $3 Billion. The third group of buyers is overseas students and their parents. Australia’s overseas education sector is booming and the majority of overseas students are choosing to study in Sydney. The students or their parents are looking to buy an apartment to live in while they are in Sydney and to keep as an investment.

Q: What should be the most toughest or challenging thing ever? The construction of Top Ryde City Living, a 653-apartment development built above a large, fully-operational shopping centre, presented one of our toughest logistical challenges to date - particularly in relation to materials transport. Top Ryde City Living includes seven apartment buildings, function rooms, a music room, library, a playground, landscaped gardens, a pool, gym and spa. The entire development from the individual apartments and penthouses to the shared facilities was designed to take maximum advantage of the available space and views and to utilize natural light and cross-ventilation. The hard work of the Crown Group team has paid off. Top Ryde City Living was recently named best High-Density Development in NSW and ACT at the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) NSW awards for excellence 2013. The resort-style development was also awarded a Master Builders Association Excellence in Housing award 2013 the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) NSW President’s award – considered one of the highest property development accolades in Australia. Today, more than 400 residents have already moved in and are enjoying panoramic views to the Blue Mountains, North Sydney, the Sydney CBD and The Sydney Harbour Bridge. Q: Any guiding principles of property development for a success in the market? Speed in decision-making and through the entire pipeline is essential to our success. The Crown Group model is self-sufficient and uncomplicated. We have our in-house construction and development team and sales divisions which improve our efficiency in delivering our products, enabling us to offer high-quality apartments at affordable prices. Companies without building arms often must charge an extra 10 per cent for each apartment due to the extra costs they incur. We don’t have the lag time seen in many listed entities where reporting procedures and

board members often slows the decision making process. The great aspect of Crown is we have the experience to run a solid development company. I’m an architect, my business partner Paul is a builder and many of our top staff come from the biggest companies in Australia’s building and development industries. We have continued to prosper when many of our competitors failed during slower economic growth over the past 17 years. The coming years will be an exciting time for us; Crown Group is seeing strong, sustainable growth based on solid principles. Q: Are you a believer in design-led market? Is it a part of Crown Group’s design-led approach in mastering sophisticated and stylish living for any property and other modern luxury projects? Yes, I believe in the phrase “build it and they will come.” For over 17 years Crown Group has successfully proven time and time again our exceptional ability to deliver high-quality homes swiftly to the market, at an attractive price. By differentiating our apartments from other developments in Australia we have created our own, uncontested market. Each of our projects is unique and one of a kind. We go above and beyond other developers and provide beautiful lobbies, gardens, function rooms and pools. We dare to say we have earned our reputation as one of Australia’s best property developers and Australians aspire to live in our apartments. Q: In term of the interior, do you also choose quirky, unexpected pieces of decorations to ensure the interior will not be completely predictable as discerning travelers might have commonly experienced in other luxury sensual hotels resorts across Asia? We employ the best interior architects to design the interiors of our apartments. We fit each apartment with high-quality materials and European appliances. The Japanese-Australian architect Koichi Takada designed the interiors for our recent projects Skye by Crown and V by Crown.

63

Moreover, we incorporate the best interior design and we create a journey of discovery from the entrance through to our facilities, common areas and gardens, revealing new spaces. The spaces transition from smaller intimate lounge areas and libraries to expansive gardens, pools and viewing platforms. Q: What are you mostly proud of about Crown Group? Since forming the company with my business partner Paul dating back to 17 years ago, Crown Group has grown from a boutique operation to an enterprise with more than $3 billion in the current pipeline. Today, Crown Group is one of the leading development companies in Sydney another $1.5 billion in construction set to come on line next year. I am exceptionally proud of how far the business has come in the past 17 years. I’m privileged to have some of the best people from some of the largest companies in the Australia working for Crown. We have been recognized with top industry awards. Our resort-style development Top Ryde City Living was recently awarded the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) NSW President’s award – considered one of the 64

highest property development accolades in Australia. It was also named best High-Density Development in NSW and ACT at the UDIA awards 2013. Our waterfront development Sanctum by Crown received a Master Builders Association Excellence in Housing award 2012 and our Homebush development was named Housing Industry Association CSR Housing Awards 2007 Apartment Project of the Year. Q: Which property projects are you mostly proud of ever developed? Which one do you think it is the most successful one and considered as the company’s signature or iconic property? We have three developments which truly stand out from the rest in the Sydney property market Top Ryde City Living, our $500 million, seven-tower development is a fantastic success story for Crown Group, demonstrating our aforementioned principle of SPACE. Our residents enjoy quiet time at the meditation platform, sit and read a book in the beautifully landscaped gardens, swim a few laps of the pool or head to the gym for some exercise. V by Crown, a $300 million, 27-storey residential tower in Parramatta complete with expansive views of Parramatta Heritage

Parkllands, retail and cafes on the ground floor a pool and function room. Plus Skye by Crown, a $200 million, 20-storey development in North Sydney launched in June 2013 – complete with rooftop pool and luxurious foyer. Q: What do you see as the next great market for business in Australia to explore? Or is there any area in your business that you wish to further develop, including plan to expand to do property in other countries? We see Crown becoming a global player and a global brand. The next step for us is to establish a sizeable portfolio of five-star resort quality, serviced apartments, starting first with our Parramatta and Sydney CBD developments. We are also looking to undertake projects in other states, starting most likely with projects valued at about $100M gross realisation. Crown Group’s success in Australia has opened opportunities to expand internationally, particularly to Asia. Last year, we opened our first international office in Indonesia and we continue to explore other opportunities overseas. And within the next five years, Crown Group projects to have a turnover of $1 Billion per annum and a project pipeline of more than $5 Billion.

Nagoya:

The Starting Point For A Pleasurable Vacation

Traveling in the eastern world might be difficult as some people might find themselves in the uncomfortable situation in some countries where the majority of people prefer not to speak in English. But, for me, I think it’s a favorable challenge to broaden my horizon of knowledge, culture, living experience, and way of life. And I don’t think it’s the matter of language to have a memorable traveling experience, but it’s about the belief and faith that we have for a country that we are going to visit and if we already have the love and respect for that particular country as the basic, it’s more than okay and surely that your trip will be a very enjoyable one in east Asia.

M

y recent trip to Japan was awesome and fantastic as I visited many places of sensual and cultural destinations in the Chubu region, the central part of Japan, to explore the uniqueness, distinctive character, distinguish belief, sense, and spirit of Japan that have still been reserved and maintained. Japan is an

68

all-time famous destination to Thai people when it comes to looking at the East as there are lots of things to explore, to go, and to do in Japan for an eye-opening experience. Early winter season, I was living in Nagoya, the forth largest city after Tokyo, Yokohama, and Osaka. Nagoya is the springboard to other

sightseeing in the central part of Japan. There are subway lines, JR line, private trains, Shinkansen, and express way from Nagoya downtown and Nagoya Station to Shirakawa-go World Heritage in Gifu area to the north, Nagono, Takayama, Ise Shrine and other interesting destinations in Suzuka in Mie area, Toyota,

Even if Nagoya is the country’s forth largest city in Japan, but you can definitely enjoy traveling, dining, and shopping around the up-market area and the underground shopping paradise within day or two days.

Jazz Dream Nagashima, Nabana no Sato, Iga Ninja Museum, etc. This makes the Nagoya Station quite hectic throughout the year as a result. The best and effective way to access Nagoya city from the airport is to take the airport rail-link Meitetsu to Nagoya Station. If you travel alone or in a small group, it’s much cheaper taking a train (¥850) than taxi to access the city as traveling by train can infinitely help you start to get a real touch of Japan since the moment you arrive. Even if Nagoya is the country’s forth largest city in Japan, but you can definitely enjoy traveling, dining, and shopping around the

up-market area and the underground shopping paradise within day or two days. One-day ticket for all subway line (¥740) helped me a lot to easily access the short-list of favorable destinations in the city and enjoy the whole day in the central Nagoya. For a one day shopping, don’t miss to check around Osu Kannon Temple, the eastern and western part of Nagoya Station, Sakae area to Osu Shopping Arcade through walking down on Otsu-dori. Just for a colorful lifestyle, there will be the fantastic Osu Cosplay parade during the first weekend of each month through the street around Benshoji Temple. 69

Nagashima: Japan’s Largest Winter Illumination There are so many reasons why traveling in Japan is an endless journey. There are lots of areas to discover and I am still discovering so many new places to learn and to love it in Japan. I was traveling around Nagoya and made a brief stop to the nearby Nagashima Resort and Jazz Dream Nagashima before leaving for Tokyo to update the autumn scene in Tokyo. Nagashima is a theme park that has been established to add as a wow factor for a glamorous image and amusement in the central Japan. Located at the mouth of Kisogawa and Nagaragawa Rivers, Nagashima Resort and Jazz Dream Nagashima is a vast leisure area designed to be the cluster of hotel, spa, flowering park for relaxation, amusement park, and shopping complex. They feature the Steel Dragon 2000, one of the world’s largest super roller coasters with a maximum speed of 153 km per hour and the total length of 2,479 meters and other thrilling rides and attractions and wooden coaster White Cyclone and Space Shot for a mind-blowing experience.

70

Nagashima generally highlights four different facilities and parks offering different sensations to strike visitors, including “Fun” with many rides, “Relax” at spa and hot bath facilities in Yuaminoshima, “Watch” at the beautiful flower gardens at Nabana no Sato, and “Shopping” at Jazz Dream Nagashima’s adjacent outlet park that boasts the largest number of retail stores in Japan. Anyway, if you have an idea to travel as far as Japan in order to experience the feeling of excitement through thrilling rides and games available within this fun park, let’s forget about Nagashima as shopping is not considered so special thing even if Japan initiates yearly Winter campaign to enhance shopping environment. But, it might be enjoyable if you come with your children, family, and group of friend as the jumbo seawater pool is said to offer a refreshing diversion and the adjacent hot spa with large enclosed baths and open-air baths in natural setting will be popular during summer time. The star attraction that stole the scene of the day seemed to be Nabana no Sato, where I can view beautiful and colorful flowers in an expensive area and a spacious Andes-inspired greenhouse flower garden called “Begonia Garden”, featuring a brilliant display of the acclaimed 12,000 flowering plants. Located in the south of Nagoya city, you can visit Nabana no Sato by easily take JR or Kintetsu train from Nagoya Station, it will take about 20 minutes from Nagoya Station.

The temperature during the time I visited was nearly zero Celsius degree during the night time, it is relatively a proper period and best weather and condition for many seasonal flowering plants and beautiful flowers grown in this spacious oasis to become bloom as you can see plentiful of colorful flowers and flowering plants under the nurturing and watering system within the Begonia Garden, which is so sensitive to heat and humidity. For the ultimate romantic moment, late autumn until the end of winter starting from mid of November to the end of early April is the recommended period to visit this Japan’s largest 72

flower garden. Visiting Nabana no Sata is a perfect compliment of the day following emptying the first half of the day involving myself in the excitement and amusement at Nagashima and have a peace of mind at the village of horticultural garden with variety bloom of never-seen-before and rare types of flowers. Aside from the natural flowers, Nabana no Sato is also well blessed with beer garden, Japanese, Chinese, Italian restaurants, and spa house, including UFO-alike Island Fuji that affords visitors with vistas view of the paradise of flower and million of flower-themed LEDs.

First Flight to Sendai

The Glimpse Of Beautiful Tohoku From Sendai The city of Sendai, Miyagi prefecture in Tohoku region, is still a pleasurable place to live and also still valuable for making new travel plan so as to get in touch with the sense and spirit of Japan and the beauty of Tohoku.

The Japanese wooden doll “Kokeshi” is actually the reflection of being Japanese style and the doll is the symbolic Japanese culture originated from the northern Japan. They are handmade from wood, have a simple trunk and an enlarged head with a few thin, painted lines to define the face. It’s not the bad idea to experience making of the doll as we moved up to the hill outside Sendai city to witness traditional artisanship of making Kokeshi at Akiu Kogei no Sato or Akiu traditional wooden doll crafts village for the memorable hand-on experience on painting or dyeing. At a shop named “Ganguan Kokeshiya”, owned by craftsman Mr. Suzuki Akira, he will allow visitors to join the workshop and paint the face of the pretty dolls according to the samples or your imagination to create one-of-akind Kokeshi. For more info, contact 022-398-2673

Aoba Castle can be reached in about 20 minutes from Sendai Station by the Loople Sendai bus. A day pass for the Loople bus costs 600JPY and it takes about ten minutes to walk between the city museum and the former castle grounds. http://www.stcb.or.jp/eng/index.html

To get there, from JR Sendai Station West Exit Bus Pool Platform No.8, take the bus bound for Akiu Onsen/Akiu Otaki and get off at Akiu Onsen Yumoto, and then walk 20 minutes.

J

apan is a dream destination for many people in Thailand and all people around the world. The country is where you will definitely meet with the quality of life and quality of living, intelligent and cutting-edge technology, standard of living, hygiene good & food safety, convenience and perfection, spontaneous and friendly people, life amidst the well-preserved distinguish culture and tradition and technologically advance or the modern-tradition in the city. The Sendai capital city of Miyagi prefecture in Tohoku region or northeast of Honshu island is still a safe and pleasurable place to live and enjoy such Japanese culture and quality of life and also still valuable for making new travel plan so as to get in touch with the sense and spirit of Japan and the beauty of Tohoku region. Dating back to Japan’s deadly 9.0 magnitude undersea mega-thrust earthquake causing huge tsunami on March 11, 2011, I am still feeling the pain and it’s certain that such tragedy has collectively eroded the confidence on inbound tourism overall, particularly the northeastern Japan or locally known as Tohoku region while the safety concern over the radioactive substance leakage at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant, which was the main power plant to serve Tokyo, has dramatically decreased the number of international visitors coming to the charming land of Samurai. My 9th visit to Japan with Thai Airways’ new 7th direct flight to the city of Sendai provided me with the new perception about the safety traveling to Sendai, including the improving sentiment in tourism industry and the chance to visit the recovered tourist destinations around the coastal areas of the city. Now, it’s nearly been three years in full, the perception and confidence in inbound tourism to Japan have been positively restored and developed as the deadly tsunami didn’t damage key tourist destinations in Tohoku and Miyagi prefecture as many people perceived. As a Japanese critic and crazy fan, my chance to visit Japan is plenty and I have enthusiastically kept on my determination to go back to Japan to rediscover the sense and spirit of Japan again and again since the natural disaster on March 11. This is also due to Japan is an important market to Thailand and vice versa. And my recent visit to Japan was during the early winter season in Sendai, according to the invitation of and Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) and Thai Airways International (THAI) to celebrate its inaugural flight to Sendai and also to witness the improving tourism environment, tourism potential and recovery in Japan’s Tohoku region. To my opinion, I’ve wondered why Sendai is widely known as the “City of Trees” as the number of public parks is not much compared to Tokyo and other big cities, but I came to realize the definition of “City of Trees” of Sendai

when I had the chance to walk along major roads, especially the Hirose and Jozenji road, where visitors can see the abundance of beautiful Ginkgo trees and falling leaves in autumn and Sendai Pageant of Starlights on zelkova trees at Jozenji-dori, which is actually the place for relaxation and shopping as both Jozenji and Hirose road are well connected to the nearby Vlandome shopping area, Kokubancho, to the stretching Ichibancho shopping arcade in front of the AER building, which is only a short walk from the JR Sendai Station. The central Sendai is also brilliantly teemed with local department stores such as Mitsukoshi, EBeanS, Sakurano, Sendai Parco, AER building, Sendai Loft, Forus at Jozenji-dori to serve the unquenchable thirst of shopping. For those wishing to quickly experience the glimpse of the city, the Loople Sendai is an enjoyable

choice that will take you on a half-day tour to major sightseeing spots in the central Sendai. It takes about one hour per full circuit starting from JR Sendai Station. http://www.kotsu.city. sendai.jp/english/index.html Sendai has prospered as the capital by the tactician and a legendary warrior and leader Date Masamune who reigned over this district and built Aoba Castle at the beginning of the 17th century. So, it’s a must where to go to visit the iconic Sendai Castle or Aoba Castle built by powerful feudal lord Date Masamune, which was destroyed by the carpet bombs during the World War II. Now the remaining is the outer stone walls and equestrian statue of the lord Date Masamune while the surrounding areas have been transformed into a gracious public park for relaxation offering the breathtaking view of downtown Sendai. 75

The Recovered Beauties

Of Shiogama & Matsushima In the next morning, we managed to Shiogama city, which is located outside the Sendai, to visit Shiogama Fish Market, one of Japan’s most important fishing ports and one of the busiest wholesales markets and fish processing centers in Tohoku region. The city was affected by the tsunami caused by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and is still regarded as one of the three finest coastal views in Japan. At the fish market, you will see a large amount of fresh tuna and other mouthwatering seafood brought in from the surrounding oceans. Tuna here is quite big and it’s said this is the most valuable anywhere in Japan. Like the Tsukiji market in Tokyo, you can also enjoy sushi made with carefully selected ingredients as fish, fresh tuna, and other seafood here are available at excellent value. Shiogama city has several train stations, which go directly to Sendai and it takes about 15-20 minutes. The fish market is a 15 minute walk from Higashi Shiogama Station or a 40 minute walk from Hon-Shiogama Station along the JR Senseki Line.

Aside from enjoying fresh seafood and sushi at Shiogama, visitors to the city might also like to take the chance to visit Matsushima, which is famous as one of Japan’s Three Scenic Wonders featuring a bay dotted with over 260 large and small islands. The area is within easy reach of the city, taking only around 40 minutes from Sendai Station on the Senseki Line. Visitors can take a pleasure cruise around Matsushima bay’s islands at 1,400JPY to enjoy the scenery on the water. In this way, you can get to see details like the rock surfaces and tree shapes you can’t see from afar, and even get the chance to pleasurably feed the black-tailed gulls onboard. Matsushima was hit by the earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011, but hardly damaged thanks to its protected location inside the island dotted bay. Most tourist attractions, shops and hotels now reopened and recovered like a new.

The opposite to Matsushima Bay Cruise is Zuiganji Temple, one of the Tohoku Region’s most important Zen temples and a reflection of the natural beauty of Matsushima. The temple was able to sustain the major damage in the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami as the sea water from the tsunami approached the temple for only 300 metres from the main entrance. Unfortunately, the time we visited, the main hall of Zuiganji was currently under the renovation program starting since November 2008 to approximately March 2019. The grounds remain open and you can visit alternate buildings that are not normally open to the public. According to such time frame of renovation work, such renovation is not related to the earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011. Zuiganji Temple is a few steps from the pier of Matsushima, and a 5-10 minute walk from JR Matsushima Kaigan Station

Recommended Flavor Of Sendai Shokeikaku, a restaurant in the former Date family residence, where you can enjoy variety of local dishes served in a small Sendai Tansu, a Japanese chest of drawers and overlook the splendid garden from dining area, which was completed in a traditional Japanese Shoin style to compliment your meal. It takes 40 minutes by Miyagi Kotsu bus bound for Akiu Onsen from JR Sendai Station. Get off at Moniwaso Iriguchi bus stop and then walk for 15 minutes. The Unchanged Melody Of Classic Europe

On Table

As time goes by, The Tables at Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok is still able to amaze dinners with classic European style on the idealistic Mezzanine level. It has been done to evoke the nostalgia French and European dining in the past while the finish with French-inspired live cooking tables helps make the restaurant a pioneer of a dynamic cooking show to sensually enhance the taste of your favorite dishes. This should be blamed for when a food tastes exceptionally good.

T

82

he idea in design of the restaurant was created by the world-renowned designer Tony Chi, which he wished to hark all dinners back to the bygone day of classic French and European table service style when cooking is elaborately done on a gueridon trolley and serve to your table in the full view of guest in the restaurant. The concept of live cooking table here is based on such classical art of dining in Europe twisted with some modern and creative twist to create a sense of culinary show to compliment dining experience. The overall atmosphere is classic, elegant, very formal, but not so intimate. The bronze tone and dark dim light dominate the whole

area to make it more subtle and charming. Most of decorative items, including table setting and seating, are sourced from Thailand but refinished and designed to borrow the glimpse of French and Europe. The Tables features one spacious dining area that can accommodate more than 100 customers. The main dining area is formally equipped with five live cooking tables with glass shelve for keeping wine glass, dining tools and sauces. The restaurant also highlights its two enticing private dining room-Chamber room and Cellar room, which boast high-ceiling concept and finished with colored glass imported from Argentina to exude a exotic feeling.

Looking at the menu, all ravishing delicacies draw the inspiration from the old world of Europe combining with the culinary secret and a modern touch by the award-winning Chef de Cuisine Michel Eschmann whose wealth and extensive culinary experience in hotels from Switzerland. More than 60 per cent of dishes listed in the menu are finished the live cooking table in front of you and mixed with alcoholic contents (Cognac) to create glaze and flame while cooking, except some dishes that require a complicated technique will be made to your perfection in the kitchen. Don’t forget to order one of the most inventive Tiger Prawns, Saffron, Bell Pepper so as for you to witness chef in action and the flash of the fire while cooking and the recommended dessert Baked Alaska, a sparkling ice-cream that is finished with alcohol and flame. Other recommended great value for money includes Caesar Salad, Boston Lobster Bisque, Steak Au Poivre, Wagyu Beef Sirloin, Boston Lobster Thermidor, etc. All of them are

famously common in classically elegant French and Europe, but with the modern twisted of its team chef makes it a perfect place to enjoy a very best in life on the table. Hotel fine dining venues share the same trait in providing customers with quality material, sumptuous and lavish fare, food hygiene, new and fresh materials, attentive staff, and personalized service; it’s absolutely a culinary secret that becomes common to deliver an aura of ritzy dining to delight all dinners. The point of difference to juxtapose between them is the ability to manipulate the conceptual ambience and environment as the core ingredient to enhance the taste or improve the taste sensation. Here, at The Tables, should be what you are looking for to achieve your passion of gastronomy and also to enhance your dinner experience tonight. Aigle Azur to Fly to Beijing French airline Aigle Azur will launch flights to Beijing next summer from Paris Orly-Sud Airport. The carrier, which is part-owned by China’s HNA Group, will launch direct services between Paris and Beijing on 18 June 2014. It will become the third airline operating the route, following Air France and Air China, but unlike its rivals, Aigle Azur will operate from the French capital’s Orly-Sud Airport, rather than Charles de Gaulle. Aigle Azur currently operates a range of short- and medium-haul flights to destinations in Europe and Africa. But the company said the Beijing route fits in with its long-term strategy of developing a long-haul network.

American Airlines Merger Finalised American Airlines and US Airways have legally completed their merger, with the latter to slowly dissolve during the next few years. The merger has been fully approved legally to make the world’s largest airline and will retain the American Airlines name with headquarters in Dallas-Fort Worth and an operational presence in Phoenix. Changes will then start in this year with reciprocal benefits for frequent fliers and lounge access from January. Then on 31 March 2014, US Airways will move from the Star Alliance to oneworld alliance with American Airlines meaning more routes that oneworld’s frequent fliers can earn and burn miles on. The airlines will also introduce a new uniform for crew and no doubt offer a similar in-flight service later down the line. The merger is expected to save US$1 billion a year by 2015, offering nearly 6,700 daily flights to 330 destinations in 54 countries. 95
