FEATURE WATCH THE EDOX HYDRO SUB Launched in 1965, the Edox Hydro Sub was an ultra-tough diver’s watch that was waterresistant to an incredible, for the time, 500m. Last year, nearly 50 years later, boutique family owned Swiss watchmaker Edox brought this legend of the deep back to play a special part in a unique North Pole challenge and to mark the company’s 130th anniversary.

The Hydro Sub comes with a metal bracelet but also a collector’s box housing an additional orange and water-resistant leather strap and tool to change the bracelet.

Limited to 350 pieces worldwide, the Edox Hydro Sub North Pole Limited Edition was the official timepiece of an expedition by champion free diver Christian Redl and Australian photographer Markus Fillinger to the geographic North Pole in February 2015.

The Hydro Sub pays testament to Edox’s expertise in superbly engineered and highly waterresistant timepieces, a heritage began in 1961 with the launch of the revolutionary Delfin, waterresistant to 200m thanks to its cutting edge double-crown gasket, double caseback and extra shock proofing.

The pair trekked from northern Canada through extreme conditions (temperatures down to -40 C) to the North Pole where Redl made the first-ever free dive — without breathing gear — under the ice cap. Redl wore the Hydro Sub during the mission and on his historic plunge into the frigid waters.

As featured in Men’s Style Issue #63

The Hydro Sub played a vital part in the mission; like its 1965 predecessor it is water-resistant to 500m but this model also has a unique moveable crown protector to shield the crown from the extreme conditions that Redl and Fillinger encountered.

The 49mm watch has an officially certified Swiss automatic chronometer movement at its heart and the caseback is specially engraved to mark the North Pole mission.

The 2015 North Pole expedition was the supreme test for man and machine, just the sort of challenge that fits the ethos of the Les Genevez-based Edox. To celebrate its 130th anniversary, Edox released special updated editions of several of its most influential timepieces; the Hydro Sub, the Les Bemonts Open Vision Automatic and the revolutionary 1970’s World-Timer watch, the Geoscope. “A TIME TO REMEMBER” Edward Urrutia

Introducing luxury French watch brand Bell & Ross to a select group of influential Australian men was the aim of a dinner held by Men’s Style and Lion Brands Australia in late 2014. With a growing profile in this market for its highly technical and very manly timepieces – beloved of pilots, policemen and special forces around the world – guests were able to try on a wide selection of Bell & Ross watches ferried lovingly to the venue by Lion Brands CEO Graeme Goldman. Thanks to Mr Tom Williams, GWS Giants stars Callan Ward and Stephen Coniglio, and Sydney FC stars Pedj Bojic and Bernie Ibini for their attendance, as well as Keystone Group and Johnnie Walker for their support of what was a most enoyable evening. www.bellross.com

WRISTY BUSINESS A chat with edox ceo alexandre strambini

A former Swiss pro tennis player, Alexandre Strambini nevertheless always had family connections to watchmaking, and has overseen the growth of heritage Swiss brand Edox since joining the company in 1999. Strambini was recently in Australia due to Edox’s role as official timekeeper of the Sydney leg of the Extreme Sailing Series. Why do you like the association of the Edox brand with sport? When you’re an ex-sportsman you have very strong emotions [about sport] and we like to try and convey these emotions to others. When you make watches, you always try to design watches that will evoke emotions in people, so we try and associate our watches with something that will underline those emotions, like Extreme Sailing or the Dakar Rally. Despite your background as a pro tennis player, watchmaking is in your DNA, correct? My grandfather was a watchmaker and my father has always been involved in the watch business as well. I heard a lot about watches when I was young so it’s kind of logical that I’m now in the same business.

What is your understanding of the brand’s profile in Australia? We have changed distributors three years ago [to Lion Brands Australia] and really, it started almost from zero profile then to now, where after three years I can say we are developing the business in the correct direction. I’m really looking forward to the next 2-3 years as I’m sure we will achieve a good performance in Australia. Is it a difficult balancing act to promote the heritage of the brand while also appearing progressive? The brand is 130 years old but a lot of other watch brands also have a long history. In 2006, we completely changed the profile of the brand, going from classical pieces to something more sporty, and this was the most important year in the company’s history – only eight years ago. But history is important, yes. Do you have a favourite child amongst the collections? Maybe the new Hydro Sub launched at Basel in 2014. It’s a bit special, with protection for the crown…not complicated but unique. It’s my favourite at the moment.
