6 | Alpina Startimer Pilot Automatic Chronograph
The New Alpina Startimer Pilot Automatic Chronograph Alpina, one of the pioneers in professional pilot watches introduces its new Startimer Pilot Automatic Chronograph, featuring a vertical “bi-compax” counter layout and distinctive military dial colours, to honour three different fields of aviation.
A Legendary Aviation Heritage In the first 50 years of the past century Alpina was a renowned manufacturer and official supplier of military aviation watches to continental air forces. Early aviation pioneers had strict requirements: their instruments had to be extremely precise and provide ultimate shock resistance. In addition, Alpina pilot’s watches were mostly equipped with an anti-magnetic case, highly contrasting dials with oversized luminous numerals and luminous hands for instant readability. Since its initial launch in 2011, the Startimer Pilot Collection has imposed itself as one of most recognized and recognizable professional pilot watches on the market.
The Startimer Pilot Automatic Chronograph Alpina introduces this new model, encasing the AL-725 Automatic Chronograph caliber, while at the same time honouring the 3 different fields of aviation: Air Force, Naval Aviation and Bush flying. The 3 aviation domains are symbolized by the respective dial colours of the three models: Black for the Air Force, Petrol Blue for Naval Aviation and Military Green for bush flying. The new Startimer Pilot Automatic Chronograph features the iconic Alpina aviation dial design, albeit with a slight vintage touch and the distinctive Alpina red triangle symbol at 12H. To ensure perfect time readability, the running seconds counter at 9H has been hidden in order to create a vertical “bi-compax” counter layout. The 44mm diameter stainless steel case with an oversized pilot screw-in crown features a scratchproof sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, an engraved screw-in case-back with the Startimer Pilot Collection symbol and is water-resistant up to 10 ATM /100M /330feet.

Bell & Ross Burning Skull
A Key Military Symbol Each of the BR 01 Skull collections pays its own unique tribute to the legendary parachutists of the Second World War. Emerging from the skies at dawn on 6th June 1944, the troops of the 82nd and 101st American airborne divisions played a vital role in the Normandy landings. On their jumpsuits, these elite fighters proudly wore an insignia bearing a skull and the words: ‘Death from Above’, both to intimidate their opponents and to ward off ill fortune. Today, the legendary Jolly Rogers still figures on military equipment, such as uniforms, emblems and aeroplanes as a decorative element that is used as a talisman or a rebel symbol. And what could be more symbolic than a tattoo, particularly
one that depicts an image as striking as the fires of hell? So was born the BR 01 BURNING SKULL. Faithful to the spirit of the 1944 parachutists and their emblem, which resembled the pirate flags of the past, the BR 01 BURNING SKULL displays the skull and crossbones, perfectly placed within the lines of the iconic square case of the Bell & Ross brand. Sporting the colour of steel with a black background serving as a showcase, the relief dial features hour and minute hands that reveal other traditional motifs from the military world: the dagger and the sword. The matt appearance of the metal and the muted reflections from the alligator strap enhance the watch’s adventurous and combative image.
Bell & Ross BR01 Burning Skull | 11
In 2009, Bell & Ross made a lasting impression by breaking with traditional watchmaking codes for its very first BR 01 Skull. A remarkable version was unveiled in 2015, in the form of the BR 01 SKULL BRONZE. And the story of the now famous Bell & Ross skull has taken yet another twist with the revelation of an extraordinary new face. This brand new version is a celebration of military symbolism and the art of tattooing. Exceptional Finishes
Relief engraving for the skull
Intaglio for the tattoo Despite its provocative aspect, the skull is not the only unusual decoration on the watch. The entire case surrounding the dial is fully engraved and decorated in the style of a tattoo. Evoking some of the most striking designs used to decorate the skin, the watch is emblazoned with sparks flying in all directions, on both the front and back, with an array of details covering every surface and recess.
The realism of the skull in the centre of the ‘tattoo’ is reinforced by the design of the dial on two levels, which brings a depth to the visual effect. The skull is created from stamped metal, a process traditionally used for producing coins and medals, and which creates a true relief. The black SuperLuminova covering the dial face further accentuates the skull, intensifying its defiant stare.
Turn the watch over, and even the visible inscriptions on the case-back seem to be taken from a real tattoo, with the curved letters appearing to follow the contours of an arm. Its bold, edgy graphics recall the mythical fires of hell, and include numerous motifs symbolising destiny and mortality: a heart, a rose, a scythe and an hourglass, lurking within the decoration.
The military symbolism and exceptional craftsmanship of this watch make it truly one of a kind. The bellicose character and exquisite workmanship of the BR 01 BURNING SKULL add a fiery aura to the talismanic spirit of the original Skull model. The watch is available in a limited edition of 500 pieces, and will delight collectors and fans of idiosyncratic timepieces.
To create this effect, each line engraved into the steel is filled manually, using a stylus, with a black ink/varnish, just like a tattoo artist decorating the skin. During the process, the piece is fired several times in an oven to fix the lacquer. It is a long and painstaking job, and it takes the engraver/lacquerer several hours to finish each case. Once these stages are complete, the black lacquer underscores the watch’s graphic identity through the interplay of balance and contrast between light and dark tones. The steady hand, expertise, experience and artistic mastery required for this work on the steel of the BR 01 BURNING SKULL closely match the skills of the tattoo artist.

Bell & Ross Instrument De Marine
A faithful rendering of a ship’s clock as a wristwatch, this model is similar to the iconic BR 01 in its execution. The BR 01 Marine Instrument has a stylish, subtly retro design. This watch has a case, bezel and winding crown made from bronze. Only the case-back features more contemporary titanium. In a final touch, an elegant band of rosewood encircles the dial of the watch. The dial pairs white lacquer, Roman numerals and fine blued steel hands, in tribute to the aesthetic of
these 18th century instruments. The small seconds dial, with its delicate graphic layout, sits at 6 o’clock. The mechanism selected is a hand-wound movement, as would have been used in this era. It has a central hour and minute display, with the seconds at 6 o’clock. Finally, the power reserve, which, at 56 hours, is much greater than usual, is a tribute to long ocean crossings.
BR 01 Instrument De Marine | 15
Aviation is a passion at Forms & Materials Bell & Ross, and reinterpreting The new Marine Instrument collection takes the essence the legendary 18th century clock invented by John onboard instruments, its guiding ofHarrison and scales it down to watch size. At that time, force. The iconic BR 01 watch took ship’s clocks were housed inside square wooden cases. However, the display was round, just like the majority its inspiration from the clock in of modern watches: a circle within a square. In the of these new watches, Bell & Ross combines an aircraft cockpit. With its latest design contemporary and retro touches, and the materials play a collection of Marine Instruments, very important role: INDIAN ROSEWOOD: This wood harks back to the hull the watchmaking firm is and masts of the vessels and to the cases used to house temporarily leaving runways, the ship’s instruments at the time. Indian rosewood is a rare timber, of a warm pinkish red in color, with an elegant radars and fighter planes. texture and very fine grain. It does, however, offer very high compressive strength. Working it requires a very meticulous approach. Firstly, it is shaved into very fine sheets, which are pressed, machined and then varnished.
A Brief History The marine clock was first fitted to ships in the 17th century. These clocks were equipped with a sufficiently accurate mechanism to serve as the time base for navigation. From the 18th century on, marine technology developed and a large number of vessels were now crossing the oceans. A wave of shipwrecks followed, often caused by inaccurate navigation. For the United Kingdom, the mastery of the high seas had a strategic purpose. As an island, its military and economic power depended upon it. Members of Parliament strived to find a way of reducing the number of shipwrecks reaching the conclusion that voyages would be safer if ships had more accurate timekeeping instruments. In those days, navigators would turn to the night sky, specifically to the stars, to help them during long voyages. Precise knowledge of the time enabled them to establish their longitude, and thereby determine their position in the ocean. The English Parliament voted in the “Longitude Act” in 1714, which was a law promising a reward of £20,000 to the inventor of a clock that was accurate to one degree of longitude. John Harrison, a specialist micromechanical engineer, won this prize with a clock that offered unrivalled accuracy.
BRONZE: The cases of the BR 01 Marine and BX1 Skeleton Chronograph are adorned with bronze, an alloy that brings to mind the brass used for the surrounds on the original ship’s clocks. When it comes into contact with air and moisture, this material takes on a brown or greyishgreen patina. With no two-oxidation processes alike, these watches are transformed into unique pieces. ROSE GOLD: This material is used for the BX1 Tourbillon Chronograph case. Rare and noble, gold is the perfect choice for such an exceptional model. Its warm color also pairs beautifully with the Indian rosewood. GRADE 5 TITANIUM: The watchmaker has chosen modern, lightweight and resilient Grade 5 titanium for the central container section.
Combining Tradition and Modernity The constant quest for new universes and new lands to explore, has led Bell & Ross to pay tribute to this series of three watches. The first marine instruments appeared in the 17th century with the purpose of guiding the vessels that had started to cross the seas and oceans at this time. The timepieces designed for shipboard use (which were key to naval history) have inspired this collection. These three new watches offer a contemporary reinterpretation of those evocative tools that link together tradition and modernity, past and present.

Victorinox Swiss Army I.N.O.X. Titanium The I.N.O.X. Titanium Paves the Way to an Iconic Identity Today’s everyday adventures can have anything from granite gorges to concrete urban jungles on the agenda. The I.N.O.X. Titanium by Victorinox Swiss Army is a high-tech timekeeper that embodies material and technical excellence. This latest addition to the I.N.O.X. family is an icon in the making. It reveals the Victorinox brand’s true colors, authenticating the result with intrinsic modernity. Titanium was a point of departure on a challenging and rewarding development journey. Fine sand-blasting led the way to a warm grey color for the multi-surfaced, geometric case and matching dial. Light titanium has proven true grit when it comes to comfort and hypoallergenic behavior. The watches’ smooth matt finish has inspired two distinctive trains of thought in appearance terms. In two variations it contrasts confidently with a vibrant orange or bright blue rubber strap and a second hand in exactly the same shade. A more understated alternative introduces a grey rubber strap and dynamic red second hand. Luminescent hands and indices, plus a date calendar, keep the wearer in the moment around the clock.
The objective of the I.N.O.X. to create a new watchmaking standard has materialized. Building a strong bridge connecting quality, innovation and functionality, the I.N.O.X. Titanium has reached an impressive destination. Whatever the circumstances, the I.N.O.X. won’t let you down. Truly.

For tough guys with a twist
Turning the clock back 15 years is a rich revelation. Hip guys may have been chilling to Daft Punk’s “One More Time”, ogling the very first iPods, or sharing popcorn with Gandalf at the first “Lord of the Rings” movie. But those really in the know would have been securing one of the first Graham Chronofighter watches. The rest is history as the saying goes, but Graham is keeping the vintage vibe alive to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of its successful Chronofighter with four new additions to the iconic series. With their signature trigger on the left-hand side of the case, these Swiss made timepieces, integrating quirky British roots, are right on target to propel nostalgia confidently into the future.
Sophisticated high-performance is the domain of a G1747 automatic chronograph movement, visible through the case back, with an Incabloc shock absorber and a power reserve of 48 hours. All of the Chronofighter watches are water resistant to 10 bar (100 metres) and their domed sapphire crystals have anti-reflective coating. Romantic whispers of yesteryears are clearly audible through bold styling statements of modernity. This is the timekeeper for the guy who elegantly unites sporting the sleekest pilots’ sunglasses with carefully crafting a paper aeroplane for a six-year-old co-pilot. Or for the male who derives equal enjoyment from trekking through wild landscapes and visualising the one the glass of malt in his hand originated from. Graham wearers refuse to confuse reliable with predictable.
Who dares wins
No small print
Another new chronograph to satisfy the wannabe cool dude? Definitely not. These Graham Chronofighter timepieces use the power of their innovative roots and wings to rule the kingdom of masculine mindfulness. The bold trigger that starts and stops the chronograph acts as a double agent, simultaneously protecting the crown. Whether this eyecatching design trademark is instantly in full view, or revealed gradually from its temporary hiding place behind a bomber jacket sleeve or crisp shirt cuff, the wow factor is guaranteed. Wearers of this edgily industrial mean machine are no couch potatoes; so bold looks translate directly into comfort in action with angled lugs and soft leather straps. The colour palette for the dials and straps embraces navy blue, brown or black.
The 44 mm case of the 2016 Graham Chronofighter pieces presents a dynamic cockpit of Swiss precision timekeeping. Big is beautiful here without a shadow of doubt. The chronograph functionality consists of two easily legible counters, one to track seconds and the other to count 30-minute periods. The passing of the hours, minutes and seconds is masterminded on the main dial, which also has a clearly visible date display at 9 o’clock. Elements such as fine stitching on the leather and fire-red tips on the second hands punctuate the extrovert look. These watches are the Graham flagships and fully in command of the current vintage voyage.

10 Questions With
Robert Dreyfuss; Eterna CEO
10 Questions with Robert Dreyfuss | 21
Tell us about yourself (your age/your likes/ your dislikes/ length of time in watch industry). Born in London in 1966, I come from half Swiss and half English parentage. Our family business, Rotary, was founded in 1895 by my late Great Grandfather in the Jura foothills of the Swiss watch industry, La Chaux De Fonds, and then passed on through a further three generations. The youngest of 3 siblings, I joined my father at Rotary Watches in 1987. Joining a family company is always a challenge at the best of times, for the new arrivals think they know it better and the old guard never want to let go. My father was acutely aware of this and slowly gave me sufficient latitude to make small mistakes and learn. I respected him for his years, experience and unbelievable respect and love he had built up in the UK Watch industry almost as an industry ‘great’ over 30 years. The transition, often the cause of family firms and relationships failing, was handled almost by stealth, as a result of mutual respect. In the years we worked together there was barely a cross word. Rotary became my home for the next 27 years, and in 1996, I assumed the reins of the business. Between 1996 and when the company was finally sold, sales grew threefold. In 2014 the family company was sold to the then named China Haidian Group in Hong Kong, who had already acquired the Eterna Company from the Porsche family in 2011 and Corum in 2013. As opposed to leaving the Group at the end of 2014, I was asked to assist with the rebirth of Eterna, a challenge I am mid way through achieving as part of a three year commitment to this group. My home is in London. At the heart I am a family man and as a family we are a very close knit one. Downtime, not unreasonably, is very limited given my travels, and focuses on exercise and family time.
Joining a family company is always a challenge at the best of times, for the new arrivals think they know it better and the old guard never want to let go. As for dislikes, these are few and far between albeit fish ranks very highly up there on the list. Sleep and the ability to relax are my greatest weaknesses. Tell us about your company; Eterna. THE PIONEERS – THE BOLDNESS AND PERSEVERANCE OF AN ENTREPRENEURIAL VISION Internationally renowned today, since 1856, the company has built its legacy based on principles which continue to drive it forward: a pioneering, bold and unwavering spirit. Doctor Josef Girard and school teacher Urs Schild lay the foundations of the watchmaking brand in Granges in the canton of Soleure and contributed to the economic upturn of the Aare River region. On November 7th 1856, they founded a watch movement factory; ‘Dr. Girard & Schild’ and benefited from the emerging watch industry which spread from Geneva to the entire Jura Arc region. In a very short time, they were producing semi-finished movements and fully finished watch movements. Eterna has been producing finest-quality mechanical watches in the great Swiss watchmaking tradition. In the course of a history going back to 160 years, Eterna’s workshops have produced a wealth of important developments. The House of Eterna has been the source of trailblazing innovations. Eterna is one of few watch manufacturers to integrate new ideas and top-quality materials into its traditional metier. In this way, Eterna continually succeeds in finding original and unexpected
solutions to the challenges that have faced watchmakers for centuries. For how many years have you been in the watch industry and for how many years have you been running your company? I have a 30 year plus career in the watch industry, I joined my father at Rotary Watches in 1987 who by the time I was 20 he was almost 70. Having spent 18 months prior to joining the family firm after leaving University, working in watch and jewellery retail stores, I joined the family company with a new perspective; that being the view of the watch industry from the retail landscape as opposed to just the narrow manufacturing and wholesale focus. What car do you drive and why? In London, I drive a BMW I3 notwithstanding the fact that it does have odd looks and even perhaps the looks of a physically challenged vehicle. Whilst not the most beautiful car, the technology is great as is the 0-60 acceleration and in Central London that is a huge advantage. Tell us 5 things on your ‘bucket list’ (5 things you want to do before you die). •

How do you unwind and relax in your spare time? Downtime, not unreasonably, is very limited given my travels and focuses on exercise and family time albeit every two weeks I thoroughly enjoy a visit to our local football team’s home stadium to watch Tottenham Hotspur ‘strut their stuff’. What is your best childhood memory? My relationship with my father, who whilst he was 50 when I was born and also a complicated man after a difficult
life including his period during the War, was an inspirational model to me and also a very close friend. Despite my never-ending ‘laziness’ at school and shocking school reports, he had confidence in my abilities and knew that I would shine in some way sometime later in life. He never elected to knock me down, other than when I went through a short period of wishing to become a police officer and encouraged me all the way. Perhaps being a late and unexpected arrival, he was so pleased to enjoy renewed youth that we simply hit it off really well. What watch are you wearing at the moment? 1948 Heritage for Him – Réveil Innovation continues to be a guiding principle for Eterna, endowing our watches with modern aesthetics and technology. However, from time-totime, innovation must give way to the strength of Eterna’s past. By pure happenstance, a discovery was made at Eterna of seventy vintage alarm watch movements. The Réveil is a diamond in the rough for the watch enthusiast and discerning collector. Combining the technical precision and gloried history of one of Eterna’s most unique movements with a refreshed and modern watch design, the Réveil from the Heritage Collection is a truly unique offering. The Réveil features the Movements 1475 mechanical movement with hour, minute, second and alarm clock functions. The Réveil also has a 46-hour power reserve. The alarm is set and wound to the appropriate time, indicated by the distinctive red hand. The case is composed of polished and brushed stainless steel with a 40 mm width and 12.41mm thickness. The red alarm hand is even more striking against the vintage white egg shell dial. A classy black leather strap and pin buckle clasp secure the Réveil against your wrist.

Heart of the matter Boutique Swiss watchmaker Claude Bernard gives you the chance to wear their heart on your sleeve with the stunning new Automatic Open Heart. The 40.5mm Open Heart, water-resistant to 50m, is a vivid re-imagining of a model first introduced for the Baselworld watch show in 2013 this time presented in stunning silver stainless steel. The silver case, dial, “dauphine’’ hands, crown and indices are perfectly matched to a steel-link bracelet, to create a striking, flowing design for a thoroughly modern dress watch but one which also acknowledges the grand Swiss watchmaking traditions. Through two openings on the sleek, uncluttered dial the Automatic Open Heart’s wearer can observe the endlessly fascinating mechanical dance of the beating “heart” of the watch’s automatic CB85 movement. However the Open Heart display shows off more than just mere engineering prowess; it is also literally a window into Claude Bernard’s passion and commitment to Swiss watchmaking excellence that stretch back hundreds of years. The Automatic Open Heart is eye-catching, classy, wrist wear from the Les Genevez-based watchmaker that since its founding in 1973 has been proudly making timepieces of the highest quality but at a price that won’t break the bank.

Edox Chronoffshore Sharkman Limited Edition
Spectacular! Switzerland’s watchmaker Edox has forged a reputation for exceptional and professional diver’s watches since its ground-breaking Hydro-Sub released in 1965. The new spectacular SharkMan 1 Limited Edition is no exception. The new Edox SharkMan 1 Limited Edition is a outstanding 45mm professional diver’s watch. Just 388 of this hightech ultra-water-resistant timepiece will be manufactured. Water-resistant to 500m, the SharkMan 1 Limited Edition sports a spectacular blue/green dial, chronograph functionality, date display and a special engraved case back. The stainless steel watch case mirrors the magnificent blue of the Caribbean Sea. The SharkMan 1 Limited Edition comes in a distinctive box with a choice of water-resistant black rubber or nylon fabric strap and is the perfect, rugged timepiece for all water-borne activities. Now world champion freeform ice diver and Edox watch ambassador Christian Redl - ”The SharkMan” - is leading the fight to bring global attention to the plight of the shark. Redl will play a starring role in a new movie documentary to be released in 2017, Shark Rescue, which
will aim to bust the myths about sharks and spell out what needs to be done to save this amazing animal from oblivion. And, as Redl travels the world’s oceans on his mission, he will have the new Edox SharkMan Limited Edition on his wrist. By wearing the SharkMan 1 Limited Edition, you too can play a part in spreading the message to help save the shark from the planet’s deadliest predator - man.
Feared. Hunted. Endangered. In 2015, close to 100 million sharks were slaughtered, either for food, their fins, or as by-product in other catches. And sharks can instil instant fear into humans - but Christian Redl fears for the future of the sharks. The Austrian “Iceman” is out to debunk the myths about a species that has survived on Earth for hundreds of millions of years. Unless something is done, the shark will disappear from the world’s oceans, irreparably damaging the delicate ecological balance that all sea life depends on and which could have devastating long-term effects for mankind itself.

A NEW FEAT Following a long line of KonTiki timepieces, the new Super KonTiki Chronograph remains true to the collection’s design codes while demonstrating a powerful and distinctive personality of its own. With its eye-catching design, this new chronograph is a bold statement for today’s adventurer. Housed in a robust 45mm stainless steel case, the collection features a new and dynamic dial configuration, incorporating the collection’s iconic triangular indexes with two chronograph subdials that bring a technical touch to the design of the dial. A generous application of white SuperLumiNova makes the new Super KonTiki Chronograph highly legible throughout the day and night, adding to the practicality of this precision instrument. Another useful feature is the highly polished rotational bezel that not only offers a further method for tracking the passage of time, but reinforces the sporty nature of the timepiece.
A MARITIME LEGEND OF OLD The KonTiki collection is named after the famous ocean expedition helmed by Thor Heyerdahl, Norwegian ethnographer, botanist, and zoologist. Heyerdahl crossed the Pacific Ocean on a wooden raft to demonstrate that ancient civilisations could have made such a crossing centuries ago. His only modernday equipment was a hand-cranked radio for weather reports and six Eterna timepieces for guiding his crew across the open ocean. When news of their successful voyage reached Switzerland, Eterna decided to design a unique collection to commemorate Heyerdahl’s incredible voyage. Called the KonTiki Series, it has been one of Eterna’s most popular collections since its introduction, bringing elements of adventure, danger and excitement to mechanical watchmaking.
