LETTERS FROM THE EDITORS

ENJOY THE MOMENT, PREPARE FOR THE FUTURE I feel extremely fortunate to have a career that enables me to be around the great game of tennis. As a youngster growing up in New Zealand playing at the local grass court club each weekend, I would have never imagined that tennis would take me around the world, help provide an education, and enable me to meet and spend time with so many amazing people. Scott Colebourne Editor-at-Large

When I look back on what drew me to tennis, it now dawns upon me that the same thing continues to drive me today. I loved tennis because whether I won or lost, I was responsible for that outcome. It was all on me, and each time on the court, I had the opportunity to make an impact. At times this was fantastic, many others it was tough, and I have my fair share of broken rackets to prove that I didn’t always handle it well.

One of those skills I developed as a junior player was my preparation and problem solving. I maximized my minimal talent by taking copious notes about my own and my opponents’ games; I then used these notes to design strategies to set up my strengths versus their weaknesses. I still have this journal today, and it’s just as detailed as I remember and brings back many fond memories. In my career and in particular as I look at the future of tennis, preparation and problem solving continues to serve me well. There are those out there who are concerned about tennis as a sport; I don’t share those concerns. I know tennis is amazing; it teaches us so many things, provides so many opportunities, and for those that prepare well and are ready to solve problems, can lead to a lifetime of fun and success.

PROMISE OF A NEW WAVE At Cliff Drysdale Tennis, when we look at the tennis world today, whether it be the pro circuit or amateur players, we can’t help but notice one thing…that change is coming – and it is going to be exciting.

Katie Steck Managing Editor

Since my days as a junior-level player, the same few players have dominated the pro circuit, especially on the men’s side. This is changing. Players like Stefanos Tsitsipas, our feature story, Denis Shapovalov, Jelena Ostapenko, and Amanda Anisimova are rising rapidly on the ATP and WTA tours. Their games – and ability to entertain– are a source of excitement and hold promise of a new wave of stars and rivalries. Cliff Drysdale Tennis continues to be revolutionary on and off the court, just like this new wave of rising stars. We strive to

4

continuously improve the programs at all of our clubs, our coaches are constantly seeking to develop their practice, and we consistently deliver new programs for adult and juniors of all levels like Family Fun Days, Tennis 101 Programs, and the PTU Program. Additionally, we are partnering with the USTA in an effort to grow the game across the country, especially with younger players by creating a pathway that keeps players engaged and wanting more. For so long, the game has been unwilling to evolve. The opposite is true at CDT. Within the pages of this issue of EXPERIENCE we dig deeper into how the sport is transforming at different levels and provide insight into new and exciting programs offered through the CDT brand.

OUR NEXT BIG THING

Kimberly Arena Senior Editor

We’re lucky in this day and age to bear witness to some of the best quality tennis that has ever been played. Many have called this the Golden Era in men’s tennis - Federer, Nadal, Murray and Djokovic have dominated the top of the rankings for over a decade, and the women’s tour keeps us on our toes with so many talented players rotating in as World No. 1, with no one woman becoming dominant in Serena’s absence from the top spot. As pundits vie to anoint tennis’ “Next Big Thing,” and Americans are craving for one of our own charismatic young stars to stake this claim, our sport does not need a supernova…in fact, every Grand Slam as of late has become a breeding ground for breakthroughs and fairy tales, unseeded youngsters slaying the giants and leaving fans and the press abuzz with excitement as to what’s next. “American tennis is struggling” is a sentiment that echoes through the minds of many fans. In recent years we have seen the U.S. populate the ATP and WTA top 100 with many quality players, hailing one “Next Big Thing” after another. Yet, since 2003, Sloane Stephens is the only player aside from the Williams sisters to win a Grand Slam title.

There are many reasons we have seen US tennis decline. Globalization allowed the rest of the world to catch up and surpass the quality of American player development. We became complacent, the USTA lacked adequate investment in our players, American work ethic in training is incomparable to that of Europeans, tennis is too expensive, has too many competing sports for our top athletes…the list goes on and on. But we are battling back, and we can now begin to enjoy the benefits, with plenty of young Americans in the emergence of phenoms in the game. U.S. player development has picked up the slack, and there is once again hope for our littlest rising stars to realize their potential as they progress through their development pathways. We now have Tiafoe, Anisimova, Fritz, Kenin and Opelka among the top US players to watch. While it remains hard to definitively pinpoint the “Next Big Thing,” tennis fans can certainly rejoice in watching some incredible tennis as players quest to reach the top. I, for one, am excited as a fan and tennis industry professional to be watching from the sidelines and a part of this journey.

OWN WHAT’S YOURS With so much going on in our industry, and the world, it can feel like there are a million things outside of our hands that inevitably will end up affecting us. Tennis has reached a pivotal moment; players that will go down as the greatest of all time are nearing retirement. And yet, through this boom of professional tennis, recreational and junior participation has stalled or even declined in the U.S. and many areas of the world. Joey Hanf Managing Editor

In 2019, I see a growing number of people that are letting outside factors affect their mindset and performance on things that they actually do control. Just because pro tennis is flourishing, that doesn’t mean that teaching professionals and national associations can assume participation growth. It’s very easy to place blame on another individual, organization or business. But pointing the finger doesn’t get us anywhere, and it’s often just a method of avoiding the tough realities that we face.

As you read through this issue of EXPERIENCE, you’ll see that some of the most influential figures in our sport have made their mark by controlling their own path. I’m proud to work each day at Cliff Drysdale Tennis to provide measurable improvements to the sport of tennis, both on and off the court. I’m especially proud when I see our tennis professionals doing the hard work at the grassroots level to grow the game. It’s true that our sport has lagged behind others in terms of innovation and connecting with young people, but we should view that as an opportunity, not a setback. Everyone in tennis knows what our sport can do for an individual; now we must better communicate that to the public. It all starts with players, coaches, and industry executives owning their craft.

FROM THE DESK of DON HENDERSON

A DE E P E R V IS IO N Tennis has been my life, and I’ve worn many different hats in the sport that I love. I spent considerable time as a player, traveling across Europe and playing tournaments. At the time, that was living my dream. Then I worked as a coach, director of tennis, and eventually tennis management executive. Influencing the growth of our sport has been my absolute mission. Finally, I’ve been fortunate enough to be a tennis parent, something that has taught me so much about our industry, and more specifically the current generation of players, coaches and parents. I’ve found with ever-growing prominence that so many have become overly focused on results. It makes sense; we want to win every match that we play. We want, or perhaps more accurately, parents want their kids to win and move up the rankings. There are many issues with that goal. First, developing junior players is not one size fits all. Every tennis player is different, and you can see that quite clearly when you look at professional tennis today. There are many “identities” a player can have: short, tall, powerful, crafty, smart, consistent etc. Each one of these can succeed. When the result becomes the primary goal, too often I’ve seen players utilize technique and strategy that isn’t best for their development. They may win the 14 and under trophy, but are they preparing themselves for the future? Probably not. And what if the result isn’t what you hoped for? Then the junior player is left feeling even worse. There are not a lot of positives of parenting from a lens of wins and losses.

This mindset doesn’t just come from parents — coaches too are at fault. Teaching players to win at a young age does not necessarily equate to future improvement, and often times it actually creates bad habits. Not every player should use an eastern, semi-western or western forehand grip. Comfort and feel is unique to the individual. When we coach with a results-oriented approach, we are hiding from structural improvement and instead hoping to cover them up with a tennis band-aid. As we at Cliff Drysdale Tennis launch our nationwide junior tennis campaign this summer, our goal, as well as my own as a tennis parent, is to give junior players the best foundation possible to improve and enjoy the sport. This will allow to them to be most successful, and in the long run, win matches! More than anything else, stop pushing….instead of just hitting groundstrokes and hoping for an opponent’s error, try to be aggressive, come to the net and take time away. Go for your shots, the same ones you’ve worked on in practice, rather than reverting to tactics that allow you to hide your weaknesses. Parents, coaches and players: stop focusing on winning and losing and start focusing on playing the right way. You are going to lose more matches with this approach, but your game will continue to develop and you will win more in the future. Play the right way, play every point tough with relentless positivity and good things will happen. Long term vision is easier said than done, especially in 2019, but it’s still so important. Creating the culture of trusting the process rather than trying to win every moment is absolutely something we should all strive for, and I’m excited to see CDT coaches and junior players embrace that culture going forward.

NEVER SETTLE FOR THE STATUS QUO

During the 2017 U.S. Open, ESPN tennis production leaders asked for a meeting with executives of the four majors and the ATP/WTA. The impetus was to share the networks concern about keeping up with other sports in terms of access to players both on site and during a match, length of matches, and other changes. All designed to spice up the overall production elements to present the sport in a way to appeal to a broader audience. A challenge to tennis’s leaders to move from their comfort zone. It was clear that the listeners were very receptive. For ESPN there was no agenda other than a more compelling presentation. Since that time every one of the tennis organizations have come up with ideas some of which, like the time clock, four game sets, or on court coaching tweaks, have come to pass. Isn’t it interesting how even golf, known as the stodgiest game of all has come up with a bag full of new rules to speed up their game. Like it or not our new evolving world is lived at a much faster pace. Watching two athletes mano a mano is compelling by its nature. But for five hours? Best of five set matches will eventually be buried in the grave of history. To those who argue that all great matches have been best of five ask them if there has never been a great woman’s match?

Tournament format changes are also being experimented with. The Laver Cup is huge and the new ATP Cup next January, with Tennis Australia actively involved, will be an even bigger success. The new Davis Cup is a step in the right direction, but needs some serious refinement. The stubborn mindset of the past has held tennis back so I am happy to see more tournaments and organizations pushing the boundaries. Tennis instruction and your improvement can be viewed in the same lens. Don’t settle for your current game. Touring professionals have incredible technique, but still hire coaches to tweak their game and so should you. You’ll improve and it will keep tennis fresh and fun. We are not settling with our company’s tennis programming; you’ll see examples throughout this magazine where we are implementing programs catered to new audiences and players of all ages. Please try a new clinic, league, equipment change or tournament this summer and challenge yourself to get out of your comfort zone.

Happy summer!!

RESORT FE AT U R E

CHÂTEAU ÉLAN By Rick Limpert

You’ll have “Georgia on Your Mind” with the New Tennis Experience at Château Élan. North Georgia’s Chateau Elan Winery and Resort may resemble a 16th century French mountain residence, but that’s just on the surface. Once inside the property, guests will find modern and world-class amenities like championship golf, the European spa and an award-winning winery. Adding to the unique Southern hospitality and lush vineyards is Cliff Drysdale Tennis, managing the tennis operations, which include: three championship hard courts, two Har-Tru clay courts and four Pickleball courts. “We’re honored to welcome the Cliff Drysdale Tennis team to the Chateau Elan family,” said Ed Walls, general manager, Château Élan Winery & Resort. “With their level of expertise in tennis management, coupled with our recent enhancements, we know this will deliver a superior sport experience to our guests and neighborhood visitors.” Walking the grounds, visitors will feel like they have been transported to the French countryside. In mid 2019, the property will undergo a $25 million refresh which will include a complete overhaul of 251 guest rooms and 24 suites, four new food and beverage outlets, the winery, as well as the resort lobby, with a new look to the current pool terrace and spa. Chateau Elan, the vision of Georgia businessman, Don Panoz and his wife, Nancy, has evolved over the years, but these 2019 enhancements and the expanded tennis program set the tone as they continue to offer unmatched luxury, distinguished experience and amenities in the Peach State. The tennis program at Chateau Elan will offer a busy schedule of daily programming, tournaments, special events, luxury tennis camps and more. The Racquet Club is open to Members, Non-Members and Resort Guests. Matt Kirkham has been named Director of Tennis, effective immediately. Kirkham, originally from Nottingham, United Kingdom, has over a decade of coaching experience, including his most recent position as Junior Program Director at Bluewater Bay Tennis Center, managed by Cliff Drysdale Tennis. Located in historic Braselton, 40 minutes away from Atlanta, Chateau Elan began with the planting of vineyards in 1981. While famous for the lush vines of Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet and Riesling grapes, the resort has grown a 3,500-acre conference and leisure destination where French provincial and Southern hospitality pair to produce exceptional wines and warm memories.

SAND VALLEY BRINGS WIMBLEDON TO WISCONSIN New Cliff Drysdale-managed tennis facility at Sand Valley, Nekoosa Wisconsin Rick Limpert A new chapter in Wisconsin tennis has been written with the addition of the Tennis Garden at beautiful Sand Valley Resort in Nekoosa, Wisconsin. Even with Wisconsin situated in the northern half of the country, the state has a rich tennis tradition that stretches back to the 1920s.

The experience goes deeper than the finely manicured courts. There’s the variety of private lessons, daily clinics, and summer camps available to guests and the public. It’s also recommended that players break out their “Wimbledon Whites” for daily and tournament play.

When Wisconsin tennis enthusiasts met at an Oshkosh club in 1925 to form a tennis organization, they could never have dreamed of the day that 15 pristine grass courts would find a home in their state and be run by the Cliff Drysdale Tennis management team.

Murray stresses that Sand Valley exists to respect tradition and that includes tennis.

Sitting on nearly 9,000 acres of land, Sand Valley is set in the rolling prehistoric sand dunes of Central Wisconsin. The property features three award winning golf courses, but tennis is getting as much attention thanks to engineering and technology that is now available in 2019. “We have been testing the grass court concept at Sand Valley since 2016,” said resort General Manager, Glen Murray. “Watching the reactions to how much fun it is to play tennis on grass courts surrounded by sand dunes has led us to want to share this unique experience with the world of tennis.” Wisconsin’s tennis history includes native sons, the Gullickson Twins, Tim and Tom, as well as former pro, and current Tennis Channel analyst, Leif Shiras- players that earned their best professional results on grass. 24

“Tennis has played a role at Sand Valley since the resort opened, with impromptu courts sitting near the opening tee of the first course.” Even though Sand Valley is known mainly for its three golf courses and the many accolades earned in the golf industry, tennis appears ready to makes its own mark. The 15 grass tennis courts are one of fewer than 10 public grass tennis facilities in the U.S. and the first of its kind in the Cliff Drysdale Tennis portfolio. Adds Don Henderson, CEO of Cliff Drysdale Tennis. “Combined golf and tennis facilities make for ideal sporting destinations. We look forward to encouraging travel to Sand Valley and making it one of the premier tennis locations in the Midwest.”

Numerous young players have tried to breakthrough the seemingly invincible barrier of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic over the last decade. This record shattering trio has accounted for a staggering 52 major titles over their careers, halting nearly all challengers of glory. Stefanos Tsitsipas, just 20 years young, has already beaten all three. First, he emerged onto the scene with a stunning victory over world no. 1 Djokovic at the Toronto Masters in 2018. Then, in Melbourne, Tsitsipas shocked two-time defending champion Roger Federer at the Australian Open. Variety of shot, pace and spin are all trademarks of his tennis. Following the modern athlete trend, Tsitsipas is a sizable 6’4, but also moves around the court exceptionally well.

RACQUET SCIENCE INNOVATION AT THE FOREFRONT OF HEAD’S NEW RACQUET FITTING PROGRAM By Joey Hanf HEAD has introduced the HEAD Racquet Fitting Program powered by The Kovacs Institute to help tennis players find the right racquet for their playing style based on scientific data. In a one hour session, tennis players will receive data for 3 racquets and will be able to scientifically narrow the choice down to one racquet based on accuracy and playing statistics collected by a teaching pro and the HEAD sensor. Other sports, like golf and cycling, use fitting sessions to help people find the right golf clubs or bicycles based on performance analytics and data that proves why each product is best for them. In tennis, demo sessions allow tennis players to try tennis racquets, but they are limited to choosing the racquet based on perception and feel. HEAD partnered with Dr. Mark Kovacs, who has strong expertise in sports technologies and science based programming for elite athletes, and together they developed the Racquet Fitting Program to allow coaches to help their students find the perfect racquet for their playing style using scientific data. Athletes start by using HEAD’s online racquet selector with Watson to narrow down their options to 3 racquets. In the one hour session, athletes hit various shots to different areas of the court with the

three racquets. At the end of the session, coaches are able to show the athlete how each racquet ranks with accuracy, spin, control and power, as well as providing an overall recommendation percentage which leads to the best racquet option. “We have worked closely with the team from HEAD over the past year to develop the racquet testing protocol that is easy to implement, can be done in a short amount of time and uses a unique algorithm to provide every tennis player with the ability to see and feel which racquet is perfect for them. This is truly a game changer for the industry.” Dr. Mark Kovacs, Founder and CEO of the Kovacs Institute. “The racquet fitting process is the first of its kind in our sport. The ability to show a player what is really happening on court rather than relying on feel or whether they are having a good or bad day is what every tennis player wants and needs,” said Greg Mason, President HEAD USA Racquet Sports. “Because of the HEAD sensor and the support of the Kovacs Institute, we can now accomplish something completely unique. HEAD is all about helping consumer play better and that starts with getting the right racquet in their hand. Other sports have done it for years, now it is finally available in tennis.”

JU NIO R TEN N IS R E V OL U T I ON New Website, Programs and Incentives available for junior players at all CDT Managed Locations by Joey Hanf

It’s no secret that the growth and overall health of a sport relies on the youth. Without young, aspiring players, sports like tennis would be left with a hard ceiling. These juniors are going to be the sports prominent players, both professionally and recreationally. So, as tennis participation has stalled, Cliff Drysdale Tennis has made a strong move. Launched in June of 2019, a new junior tennis campaign has connected junior players at all CDT managed locations across the world. A new website, pathway of programs, and incentives for both players and parents highlight the campaign, which plays a key role in CDT’s overall mission of growing the game of tennis.

42

EXPERIENCE Magazine | www.ExperienceCDT.com

“We now how have a one-stop shop where parents can see where their child stands, what they need to do to progress, and how they can sign up for a wide array of events.”

Information and clear communication serves as an essential goal, but perhaps even more central to the cause is encouraging players to progress on the proper pathway. Alongside key industry partners in the United States Tennis Association (USTA), Universal Tennis (UTR) and Head Tennis, CDT has created a pathway that is encompassing of all levels of players, and encourages increased participation in a wide array of programming. Each month players will have the opportunity to progress through 5 “Tiers” of placement, each of which includes special incentives, prizes and offers once accomplished.

TIER 5

“Tournament competition can be intimidating for players of all ages, especially juniors,” said Rob Lowe, Director of Tennis at Walden Racquet Center. “If a player has a bad first experience, they might never play another tournament. So that’s why we introduce them to matchplay, round robins and team challenges early on in their development. Through that experience, tournament play becomes not just approachable, but incredibly fun.” All players with also have the ability to be recognized for outstanding attitude, sportsmanship and effort with CDT’s new junior campaign. Every CDT managed location will select a Junior of the Month, who will receive prizes and recognition both in club and online. One national junior of the month will be selected based on the regional winners. There will be regional tournaments hosted for all CDT junior players, and special offers and access to select events, HEAD Tennis products, and much more. Now more than ever, young players will have the ability to connect with their peers at other clubs and events around the country. “We have to leverage tennis to make it attractive, and that’s exactly our mission with our junior campaign,” said McCulloch. “We hope to not only find new players, but retain them in a sport that they can truly play for a lifetime.”

TIER 1

TIER 2

“We believe in a pathway that encourages players to participate in clinics, lessons and play options such as match play or tournaments,” said McCulloch.

Some junior players take group clinics and lessons for many years, and are improving, but then fizzle out of the sport. Encouraging play options like Team Challenges, matchplay and tournaments is vital for player development. To move up through the Tiers, players participate in events that slowly ramp up to introduce competition.

TIER 4

“Navigating tennis can be very confusing for new families, and we are making it a priority to simplify the process for parents,” said Scott McCulloch, Vice President of Operations for Cliff Drysdale Tennis.

“When players are introduced to these different offerings, they understand the importance and value of each one. We are rewarding players based on participation, not their level of play.”

TIER 3

Tennis is competing against more sports and activities than ever, and has often lagged behind in its ability to connect with young families. To put it frankly, getting into tennis has become intimidating and confusing. And that’s about to change. The new junior tennis website takes important info, rules and guidelines from the many key players and organizations in tennis, and simplifies the messaging for families new to the game.

PEAK TEN N I S

PEAK TENNIS

Cultivating the Right Attitude By Dominic Mahboubi

In the most recent fifteen years of men’s tennis - that is, since Andy Roddick’s 2003 U.S. Open title - the major tournaments have been commanded with utter and unprecedented dominance by a select few. Contrary to the superlatives offered by awe-struck commentators and journalists around the globe, Nadal, Federer, and Djokovic are not beyond the mortal realm, have not received never-before-seen gifts of talent, and are indeed restricted to the same twenty-four hour days as are their counterparts. What separates these champions is the same, less-than-sensational phenomenon that produces success in every discipline and craft the human experience has on tap. It’s the one thing nobody wants to talk about, and yet it speaks the loudest: attitude. For a tennis player, forging and maintaining the right attitude is a multi-dimensional tightrope act. Exhibiting mastery over one’s body and mind and cultivating the ascetic concentration requisite for peak performance demands many years of training and keen discipline. In order to weather the storm of the learning process and thrive in spite of the challenges it faces, the quality of a developing player’s attitude is an imperative. A player’s outermost layer of attitude, plainly visible in the figure we see when he takes the court, presents a thick shell of confidence - that is, a deep trust in his own abilities to perform. Such confidence is critical because a player must be able to disengage the mind and allow himself to enter a state of flow, so that intuition may take over. But perhaps the most crucial element of attitude required for tennis players is humility. The ability to understand the relative importance of each point,

46

each match and your own ability. I have personally seen many cases of youth entitlement in tennis, where a player enjoys success at a young age and lets that success actually hurt their overall development. Winning is great, but playing the right way with humility is so much more important. Humility allows us to play and compete hard, regardless of circumstance. It’s not enough to only win on your good days; you have to learn how to win when you are playing poorly. Humility allows us to understand that we are not perfect, are never going to play perfect, and still be okay with that. It’s why you see the greatest players in the world handling the roughest of conditions so well. Wind? It’s the same for both players. Players without a positive, humble attitude tend to let outside factors get in their head and affect their performance. So how do we build this winning attitude? Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is a player’s mental game. Yes, you’ll have to learn by failing. But understand that failure is part of the process to success. You won’t always want to train hard, or compete hard, but try and take those feelings and battle back against them. Make your bad days the ones that you challenge yourself the most. More than anything else, you have to enjoy what you’re doing. Is losing fun? No. But that loss puts you one step closer to achieving your goals. Every step on your journey is part of the process to being more confident, humble and successful on the tennis court. Trust yourself, respect your opponent, and good things will happen.

PTU EX P E RI EN C E

THE PTU EXPERIENCE

by Jon Fortier

Cliff Drysdale Tennis’ new 12 month training program offers invaluable knowledge and opportunity for aspiring tennis management professionals Growing up, we dream of being able to make our passion part of our career. I often thought about what this meant. I traveled around the world, secured multiple degrees, worked in several professions, and still hadn’t quite figured it out. As we gain life experience, some passions and interests may change, but I always felt happiest when I was on the tennis court. I began to think about how I could use my business skills and passion for tennis together. This is when I found Cliff Drysdale Tennis’ PTU program. I applied, and knew instantly that it would open doors for me. Luckily, I was accepted and began in January, at the CDT headquarters in New Braunfels, Texas. I had experience playing and coaching tennis, but it became quickly apparent that being successful in this industry was not solely predicated on-court. Every day 48

my colleagues and I learned from executives and leaders in our company about how to manage the details of tennis. From accounting, HR, marketing, and operations, there are so many things that go into running a tennis business that most simply don’t see from the outside. I’ll never forget the hours spent with our CEO, Don Henderson, where he broke down step by step how to deliver the best private lesson experience for clients of all ages and abilities. Where else in the industry would I get that kind of hands-on learning? Every piece of training was accompanied by on-the-job experience. We assisted with programming at both the John Newcombe Country Club and John Newcombe Tennis Ranch. This allowed for a fantastic understanding of just how different clientele could be at varying

locations. At the Ranch, we worked with high level academy players as well as traveling weekend adults in for a camp experience. We also got to coach alongside legends such as Roy Emmerson and John Newcombe at the legendary Tennis Fantasies week. At the Country Club, we worked with Red, Orange and Green ball juniors alongside a plethora of adult programs such as Tennis 101, Cardio Tennis and USTA Team clinics. In February, I traveled to the Omni Amelia Island Plantation for Doubles Boot Camp, a 3 day special event. It was inspirational to see pros in our company from different locations come together to share ideas and create an awesome atmosphere for the players. After just 4 months, my hard work was rewarded. I took the next step in the PTU program. I headed west and am now serving as the Head Pro at In-Shape Shingle Springs, California. Every day I’m applying the skills I’ve developed in a new-club environment. The independence I’ve been

offered is both an honor and a responsibility. Throughout the second half of the year, I’m looking forward to getting a wealth of Summer Camp experience, a huge part of our business and one that requires each of the skills we worked on in our seminars and training sessions. With 32+ facilities in the CDT portfolio, and our fast growing nature under our parent company Troon, we as tennis management professionals are never short of opportunity. And that opportunity extends off the court. Working with our talented corporate staff has shown us that we have a pathway to success in a number of fields; it’s up to us to chase our true passion. If you’re looking to find your way into the tennis industry, I would highly recommend the PTU program with Cliff Drysdale Tennis.of fields; it’s up to us to chase our true passion.

ABOUT PROFESSIONAL TENNIS U Motivated and driven candidates will be chosen from the applicant pool to complete a 12-month intensive work and training program that encompasses all facets of tennis club management, including: on court programming of all ages and levels, event hosting and execution, facility management, employee management, digital media, marketing and financial operations. PTU trainees will also work vigorously to enhance their skills off the court through seminars, coursework and planning sessions taught by tennis industry leaders and guest speakers. This is a real life, hands on, program that allows tennis professionals to learn through action and experience. The PTU program is divided into 3 phases. Phase I begins in January or August. ON THE RISE with AMANDA ANISIMOVA She’s only 17, but she’s no stranger to the spotlight by Joey Hanf

As Amanda Anisimova played her quarterfinal match at the 2019 French Open against reigning champion Simona Halep, you would have forgiven her for showing a fair bit of nerves on one of tennis’s biggest courts. She’s just 17 after all, and was only participating in her 4th major main draw. But as has long been the case for the American, she doesn’t compare herself to the results of her peers, or champions of the past. “I have no idea about who did what at what age. People tell me, and then I just forget after a second. I don’t really care about it too much,” said Anisimova after her dominant Round of 16 win. “I’m in the present and I want to do good and I hope for good results, but I don’t really think about how old I am.”

Nervous would be just about the last word you’d use to describe Anisimova’s performance, as she utterly dominated the best women’s clay court player in straight sets. She bullied Halep around the court, and did so in a manner that was not all that shocking. Anisimova didn’t play her greatest match of her life, she just played well, and she was ready for the moment. While she fell in the semifinals to eventual champion Ash Barty, the American proved that she’ll be a force to be reckoned with for many years to come. “These results are really odd, but I’m just going to keep doing what I’m doing, because everything I’m doing, I feel like it’s going to work and it’s good, Anisimova

said after her quarterfinal win.” Honestly, I didn’t think I’d make it to the semifinals, but I knew at one point, something good has to happen.” Standing at 5’11, Anisimova hits the ball cleanly and with effortless power. Her backhand is already one of the very best on a tour that is highlighted by strong two handed backhands. She stands right on top of the baseline and does not give up ground easily. Her movement is fast improving, and is certainly not a weakness. Anisimova game would be impressive at any age, let alone 17. She played in the $80K RBC Pro Challenge, hosted at CDT-managed Tyler Athletic and Swim Club, when she was just 15. Even then it was clear that she would be a special player. Her father and coaches took a long term approach, encouraging an aggressive style of play in practice with limited matchplay as a junior. She developed her game from a young age, and the foundation for success appears to be very stable. “She carries herself with a lot of quiet confidence,” said Scott McCulloch, former Tournament Director of the RBC Pro Challenge. “From day 1, she was very professional about everything she did. Even at 15 it was clear she was going to be a special player.” That confidence has led to an impressive early career resume, including her first career WTA title in Bogota, as well as second week runs in a handful of major and premiere level events. She has risen to a career high ranking of no. 26 in the world, and is showing no signs of slowing down. On the WTA Tour, players have shown the ability to make incredible runs and win tournaments, but many struggle to do so on a consistent basis. Anisimova does not look to be a one tournament wonder, and she excels on every surface. American tennis has no shortage of young female prodigies, but this one might just separate herself from the rest.

“... I’m just going to keep doing what I’m doing, because everything I’m doing, I feel like it’s going to work and it’s good.”

A common goal that we have as either club operators or tennis players is to share the game of tennis with those around us or in our lives so that they may experience some of the joy that the game provides us. There are a lot of us that pick up our racquets and take the court every week ready to enjoy the game for so many reasons. For some, those reasons include competition, challenge, socializing, achievement and friendship. One thing that tennis players can all share is the addictive nature of the sport; the friendships/ relationships that we form through tennis are authentic and long lasting.

T EN N I S 1 0 1

However, the journey to get here did not come without a commitment or investment of time; and the challenge that we face today in attracting new players to the game is that there are so many options available in the fitness and lifestyle space. There is not a clear road map for how players can enter the game and play instantly while they are learning the game. Over the course of the past year at Cliff Drysdale Tennis we have placed a large focus on attracting new adult players to the game and creating an easy to follow pathway so that new players can engage with tennis instantly in a play to learn environment. The interesting fact that is very clear with new players is the motivation or goals that they have are very different from those of a traditional tennis player. The path for most of us that learned tennis was learn to play and then to start competing whether that was in a league, tournaments or our weekly match with mates.

STARTING THE TENNIS JOURNEY with

NEW PLAYERS By Scott Mcculloch 54

EXPERIENCE Magazine | www.ExperienceCDT.com

This pathway does not hold the same appeal to the incoming players of today as their views on tennis are more aligned with exercise, socializing, friendship, flexibility and fun. These are the motivating factors that will keep new players engaged, so it is essential that the road map we create for them embraces those values. We are providing programming and play options with flexibility and a core center around these interests. The organic nature will be that some of those players will take the competitive route and some may stay in the social space of tennis and that is perfectly fine as either way more people are playing more tennis, more often. This journey has been a very interesting one for me as I have been involved over the past year as both an operator committed to growing the game that I care for so much, and then also on a personal note supporting my girlfriend, Ambar as she took on her own tennis journey. As she started tennis I do believe a part of it was because I am involved in the sport and it plays a large role in my life, but that quickly faded away as it then

became her journey and it was very clear her motivations were to have fun, meet new friends and enjoy the lifestyle of hitting tennis balls at the park on Sunday afternoon. In case you are wondering, I am not the coach— that role I leave to one of my colleagues—I am the practice partner. It was great to watch Ambar’s journey as she moved through the progression of balls into the rally phase of tennis and the sense of belongingness and confidence she now has playing with her friends. CDT will continue to grow tennis for new adults if we embrace the values and interests of the players today and provide easy, social play options for them to engage that are not centered around competition. From there they will shape their own tennis journey and we will continue to grow the game.
