5TH Annual Corvette vs
Bay State Corvette Club vs Mustangs of Massachusetts ED YESSAIAN On the morning of Saturday June 27th, I finally
6| Motorhead Magazine - August 2020
got to cross off one long time item on my automotive bucket list- The Corvette vs Mustang Showdown. For some reason or another I could
CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE
never get to this event, but it was always something I wanted to attend. Of course, last year Xander and I did make it as a spectator (two days
vs Mustang Showdown
after the birth of my daughter) but for 2020 I finally had my car ready and my schedule cleared. The concept is simple, show your opponent a set of taillights and establish your brand as the dominant manufacturer. This was a bracket style elimination with a new for 2020 PRO class which was awesome because it opened the event up to those that wanted to launch off a Trans-brake. There was also a Street Class that featured almost 30 cars and had some impressive competitors almost ringing off 9 second timeslips. After a few rounds of competition, it came down to a handful of cars and eventually the following two gentlemen stood proudly in the Winner’s Circle‌
STREET CLASS This came down to a battle between Father and Son as Brett Dacko would face off against his boy Ryan Dacko. In a very close run, it was Brett who would take the win but Ryan promised the results will be different next year.
PRO CLASS Tony Jarvis put on a heck of a show running mid 8 second times in his 2014 COBRA JET but at the stripe it was Wayne Seavey taking home the win for the second year in a row.

KEEP MOVING AHEAD
By TANYA SIGNORE
Ways to Stay Motivated During the Pandemic I hope everyone is continuing to stay safe and content in this pandemic. Be sure to watch Governor Raimondo’s news briefings (usually at 1pm). Continuing to stay informed is important. I go some days in person and ask a question. Be sure to tune in! Note: I am still offering free individual counseling over the phone to adults and children. If interested, please call me for more details (401) 487-9949. Some of us have a lot of time freed up now. It would be great to get ahead on projects or other things we keep putting off. We sometimes end up doing our regular habits and daily routines. How can we start getting the motivation to be more productive? My motto is when you have more to do in life (or in a given day), you tend to get more done. Being out of work or less busy these days can become counter productive. Having too many choices of how we can spend our time can become a negative thing. This can lead to many things, including people suffering from procrastination and perfectionism. Sometimes dressing up and getting out of your pajamas can actually help with your productiveness. Also, give
yourself some fake deadlines to work by. Or write a schedule for the day or week ahead. As for perfectionism, practice telling yourself that things are “good enough” and move onto the next task. Limit time spent on phone calls and texts. This helps us to stick to the purpose of the call and then time will not be wasted. Some people make a schedule of their entire day in 30 minute intervals. It does not have to be 30 minutes, but it should be some kind of a plan. Although, when we think of 30 minutes at a time, that is a lot that can get done over the course of one day. Challenge yourself! Other tips to stay moving are to take a walk and leave your phone at home. Try to avoid distractions. Continue exercising, eating healthy, sticking with the same consistent sleep schedule, staying in touch with family and friends, etc. Ask for help as needed (this can be with anything.) Be around people that help to keep you on track. Turn off the TV or phone if it is making you unproductive. Similarly, if it is preventing you from getting school work done, or your regular daily tasks completed. Overall be mindful and watch the time each day. Switch up your routine with a new or old hobby. Read a new book or watch a movie that is new to you. It can be time to do remodeling or cleaning in your home. Try a new recipe. I recently mixed a pitcher of spring water (or you can use flavored seltzer water) with fresh fruit and ginger. Try to stay positive and focus on good news out there rather than bad news. Think of positive things in your own life. Moreover, reflect on the good things that get done in each day that goes by.
Years from now we want to be able to reflect on this time. Think of how you are currently spending your days. How do you want to be remembered as? What memories from this time do you want to create that are positive? My Bio... tracks that we race on monthly.
The Lincoln Johnny Lightning Race Club is a die cast club that meets once a month at the MacColl YMCA located at 26 Breakneck Hill Rd Lincoln RI. They race 1:64th scale Hot Wheels, Matchbox, Johnny Lightning cars down a 25 foot gravity track.
Right now unfortunately due to the pandemic they have scaled down their racing and are not able to allow members or people off the street to come in to the YMCA to race or look for different die cast cars on the many vendor tables for their collections.
They also raise money for local charities such as A Wish Come True and Operation Stand Down which helps out local veterans. They currently have 4 gravity
They are working very hard to get back to allowing people in their building and are looking forward to seeing everyone at some point.

When You Practice What You Preach!!
We have a passion for vehicles, whether it be classic cars, muscle cars, street rods or modern muscle and exotics we love them all. So I as sit here at 8pm on a Sunday and I’m looking over the list of upgrades we have made to my wife’s 1941 Hudson Pick-up Street rod in the last 6 or 7 months and I think to myself we need to practice what we preach. What value have we added to her street rod and what is our return on that investment? It is always a good time to reassess your investment and make sure you are protected after making improvements. An industry standard is to re-appraise your vehicle yearly, but is that the best option? While this option works great if your car has been untouched in the last year and the market has not changed much the reality is most situations do not fit this category, and if that is not the case you need to ask yourself some questions: •
What improvements have you done? And what value did they add?
•
Where is the market currently?
•
Are you moving into a new category that would warrant a new appraisal, for example moving from an unrestored original to a modified? Has your vehicle recently become an antique in your state?
•
Is your vehicle quickly gaining popularity? For example, pick-ups are a hot market currently making it a good idea to look at the value after improvements have been made.
tance than in the garage? We have seen a trend of calls lately of owners who have been doing those upgrades they have been putting off, since most of the shows have been cancelled. These upgrades all can have an impact on
During this Covid-19 pandemic many of us have been busy making improvements to our vehicles, we have the time and what better way to socially dis-
your value, by changing the overall condition and or changing the desirability of the vehicle. For example, my wife’s Hudson received a newly re-finished bed, a new full interior, new glass and gaskets, new tires, back up camera and the entire truck received a new wiring harness and circuit panel with the addition of LED lighting. These upgrades lead to a much more desirable updated truck, better safety and a roughly a 20% increase in value!! If you have been working on your car but not sure if you need an appraisal, give us a call and we can discuss if it is the right time. Cya Cruising, Jed CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

“Dog Days of Summer!” circumstances. It’s not easy at all. I receive non-stop emails, phone calls and text messages from numerous dj’s, classic car & truck clubs, charities and host businesses asking me what they can do to help put on an event and not risk anyone becoming sick from exposure to the virus. I don’t exactly know the answer to those types of questions. I know it’s a risk just being around other people but that’s not up to me. It’s up to those individuals and what they want to do in regards to automotive events. I’m always on the side of safety and health so I’m all for any decisions that lean that way. Stay safe and stay healthy everyone.
JIM WEICHERDING Wow! It’s hot out there this summer season. Especially, when you have to wear a face covering when attending any classic car and truck show or cruise night in 2020. I’m sure a lot if you reading this article right now would agree with me that it is very difficult wearing face masks when it’s hotter than hell outside and we are sitting in, and around, our show vehicles at these types of venues. What else can we do? It’s dangerous not wearing these protective masks and we want to attend as many car shows and cruise nights as we possibly can, because right now, they are far and few in between due to the Coronavirus epidemic happening all around us. We don’t want to get sick, or get anyone else sick with the virus, but we still want to live our lives as close to normal as we possibly can under the current

Pony in Ohio By ROB MAY and JEFF LOUIS Talk of Pony cars often points to the first Pony car – the Mustang. However, this article covers another important horse – the 1977 Ford Pinto Runabout. This Pinto makes its stable in Hudson, Ohio with its owner, Jeff Louis (and his wife Carmelina). “I work in the tire industry in Akron Ohio and part of a large family who worked in the automotive industry. My father worked for the Brookpark Ohio Engine Plant for 43 years and my grandfather worked for Republic Steel. My Dad also worked a second job at the local Pure Oil gas station and got my first love of the hobby visiting him at the station. My Dad and I would visit car dealers and check out new Fall models every which helped me to add to my huge dealer brochure collection.”
Jeff became a car enthusiast at a young age. “I would learn mechanical skills from helping my Dad in our backyard garage and working in my teen years to save up for my first car. That was a Ford Pinto Runabout (bought when I was 16 years old). Even though it was a basic car, it gave me so many happy memories over the course of a 9-year ownership. It got me through high school, college, and the first few years of employment after college. Unfortunately, it was my daily driver with high mileage and the brutal NE Ohio winters with road salt totally rusted the car out.” Even with all the cool cars Jeff owned, he never forgot his first car, the old reliable Pinto. “The Pinto is my sentimental favorite car. They were always considered basic transportation, and I never dreamed of ever finding another Pinto in collectible condition, since I did not want to invest a large restoration budget. In mid-2019, I was online looking for a part for my Mustang and I randomly typed in ‘Ford Pinto’. I was shocked when there was a low mileage, one owner 1977 Ford Pinto on the last few hours of an auction. After calling my wife to say I was not crazy and convinced her why I could not live without this Pinto, I decided to call the owner. The car sounded even better than the listing. Realizing I found my lifelong dream of owning a Pinto close to my first one again, I won the auction that evening.” Initially, the Pinto was ordered by a small town Ford Dealer named Wilt Ford Sales in Middleburg Pennsylvania on July 20 1976 for their dealer stock (ironically Jeff ’s birthday). The dealership was in business till 1982, and the building still stands as a Pizza Shop. “My 2nd Pinto still has the original dealer license plate holder. The car was delivered to the showroom in September 1976 and remained unsold for over a year and was finally sold

on October 10th, 1977. The Warranty Card is still in the glove box along with the owner’s manual and paperwork. The original owner meticulously cared for the car for over 41 years and only put approximately 40,600 miles on the car. The first owner passed away, so the car was not driven since 2012. Needing mostly clean up, the Pinto has zero rust and only minimal scratches and chips as expected on a 43-year-old paint job. It still has the original factory applied Vista Orange paint and 100% original black vinyl interior. In addition to the Standard 3 Door Runabout options; the Pinto is equipped with the optional all glass hatch door ($12), Whitewall Tires ($59), Power Steering ($125), Black Half Vinyl Roof ($125), Bumper Guards ($65), AM Radio that still works ($65), and Exterior Decor Group ($128). The Exterior Decor Group offered chrome trim and wide vinyl body side moulding and pinstripe. The most expensive option was the automatic transmission ($248). So well preserved, the goal is to have the Pinto remain a time capsule. The car still had the entire factory exhaust system. All the shocks and brake system components were original. The underside of the chassis still reveals factory paint and primer and all date codes were visible, matching its manufacture date. Jeff ’s Pinto is outfitted with the correct factory aluminum slotted wheels. The original General Tire white wall bias ply spare still resides in the trunk. “For peace of mind, I replaced the timing belt right after purchasing the car, the Pintos have a rubber belt (not a timing chain), so I wanted to guarantee no future engine damage resulting from a timing belt failure.” The largest project was replacing the original brake rotors (front) and drums (rear), lines, and master cylinder. “The Pinto now stops on a dime and is safe for me to drive.” Minor projects were rebuilding the original 2-barrel carburetor and thoroughly degreasing the engine compartment. Majority of under hood is original and looks amazing after engine cleaner and pure elbow grease - all the painted surfaces came back to 1970’s life.
Jeff tries to drive his Pinto at least once a week if the weather is nice. “Living by a National Park with long expansive scenic roads provides a cool topology because one minute the Pinto is winding through hair pin turns, and a mile later I am driving next to an 1800’s canal and through scenic arch ways of trees. With fairly good gas mileage (22 mpg) and being a 1977 model, it runs
The Pinto is an early serial number (3,537 Pinto built out of 180,001). According to the Marti Report, this Pinto is only 1 of 2 with the unique color, trim and options. The exterior/interior combination of Vista Orange/Black Vinyl was not common. Only 2,505 Runabouts were Orange and only 357 had the Black Vinyl interior. The rarest feature is that only 6 had the Exterior Decor Group. The majority of Vista Orange Pintos had the much more common white vinyl top and trim and plain fabric upholstery. “Many people call it the ‘Charlie’s Angels’ Pinto that Kate Jackson (Sabrina Duncan) drove in the popular 70’s TV show. The Vista Orange is period correct for the mid 1970’s when the color palette was so diverse.” This highly optioned car carried a pricey sticker price of $4,312.00 ($19,039 in 2020 value) but had only the basic vinyl interior. Many Pintos, especially dealer stock, had the Interior Decor Group which had a plusher and optioned interior including upgraded upholstery, dashboard, and steering wheel.
perfect on mid-grade (89 octane) unleaded with no additives needed.” The Pinto sometimes gets an unfounded bad reputation for safety and reliability. This Pony has held up remarkably well after 43 years, drives smoothly, and was engineered 5 decades ago!
“Equipped with the standard 2.3L 2V I-4 Engine (built at the Ford Motor Lima Engine Plant), I am very passionate about my engine history since my Dad worked for many years at the Ford Brookpark Engine Plant. This 2.3L engine is the same type that was in my first Ford Pinto. This engine had a long history in Ford Vehicles beginning in 1974 thru 1997. It powered many Ford & Mercury cars including Pinto, Bobcats, Mustangs, Capris, Fairmount and Zephyr. The 2.3L delivers about 89 horsepower, but it is more than adequate for the little pony.” Jeff ’s Pinto features a C-3 automatic transmission just like his first Pinto. “The driving experience is awesome. For the 70’s, the Pinto had an advanced for the time DuraSpark electronic ignition and also rack and pinion steering. Assisted by power steering, the Pinto is very nimble on the curvy and steep roads. The electronic ignition, compared to the older points and rotor setup on my Mustang, usually starts on the first turn of the key and idles very smoothly without constant timing tweeks.” CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

TOM McCARTHY As New England Dragway comes back to life after the COVID-19 slumber of 2020, the weekend of June 27-28 saw the Top Bike class return to action at NED for it’s first two races of the year on back to back days. The racers
showed up in force and were ready to rumble after way too much time off between last October and now a June start to the racing season. With 19 entries and 18 on the two consecutive days, it was a solid crowd of entries with last years heavy hitters leading the pack and this provided great racing both days. Paul Anderson commented, “I had a .008 RT right away and was looking good in Q-1 but then Roy Resendes steps up and drops a .003 RT in Q-2 and steals my thunder – that’s typical Top Bike racing here at NED.” So it was last year’s Top Bike champion, Roy Resendes nailing the #1 qualifying spot with Paul Anderson in the number two spot, Jim Jordan, Art Burhoe, Don Lynch and John Civitarese rounding out the top five qualifiers. From there it was usual slug fest after two rounds of qualifying as eliminations took place just after lunch. Roy and Paul were matched up in E-1 and Roy took out Paul with a .058RT to Anderson’s .129 and Roy ran closer to his 8.34 dial, going 8.39, for the win. This began a run of the table for last year’s T/B champion as Roy went on to defeat, Tommy Galligan, and Mike Vizzo for the win on the first day of competition. Day two was a repeat of the first day with Roy Resendes again defeating all commers. He started the second race by taking out Ed Hughes, the toughest man in Top Bike racing, then he trailered Tony Ficher and Man Cup Pro-ET champion, Gary Russell for his second win in as many days. Roy is tuned by NHRA Pro Stock Bike crew chief Bob Thompson, who has decades of experience in tuning the Suzuki GS motor

platform. Bob’s interaction with greats like Rick Stetson and other NHRA Crew Chiefs is of immense value to Roy’s racing program and he’s mighty grateful for the many years of friendship and support Bob and his wife have spent with Roy and his wife – they race as family.
Gary Russell
“I’ve never had a season start off like this before” commented Roy. “We made a few test hits with the old blue-bike as soon as testing was available, but this new bike we have put together is hands down a better bike, so we switched bikes right away.” Clearly they made the right choice. Laying down a .003 reaction time during the second competition pass of 2020, was a statement they set up this bike just right for Roy and he’s already driving the wheels off it. There are three classes of motorcycle/sled competition at New England Dragway. Anyone interested in getting in on the action should go to the NED website and start learning the in’s & out’s of motorcycle/sled drag racing on Wednesday and Friday nights at New England Dragway, in Epping, NH. Please see the NED website for details and download the Racers Handbook, then come up to the track and get with the program. New racers are always welcome!

As many of you know I’ve spent most weekends of my life at New England Dragway. I was just 3 /12 months old the first time I went to the track and for my FIRST birthday my Dad came home with a Junior Dragster (which I will start running at five years old). I’ve met hundreds of awesome people and could not imagine growing up at a better place. Amongst the many car shows, racing events, and special occasions I’ve been a part of, one of my favorite things to do at the track is watch my cousin Dave Nadeau rip it up in the Street Fighter class. This class is run by the Power couple of Keith and Laurie Correia, who also participate in racing the class, so they put an incredible amount of time, effort and passion into insuring that it is safe, enjoyable, and competitive for everyone. We recently sat down with our gracious hosts to see exactly what we could do to get more enthusiasts involved in the class. First and foremost, the class is open to pretty much anyone that can competently operate a street bike. While racing experience is a plus, this class is not overrun by wannabe professionals that take all the fun out of it. Everyone involved is there to help each other out and almost the whole class pits together, which is another thing I found really great about the class. Keith mentioned that the requirements to enter the class are geared around guys that might actually ride their bike to a race, compete and ride back home. Of the few rules he highlighted he mentioned No two-steps, no delay boxes, no auto-shift, no sliders, tethers are mandatory, and bike must stall if it has a Gen 2 clutch.

‘88 Cougar – Great 1st Cat By ROB MAY and BART KILRAINE
Aerodynamics was in full swing by 1988. This Mercury Cougar, owned by Bart Kilraine IV, makes its den in Revloc, PA. “My father introduced our

family into showing cars, especially myself from a young age. I am currently a student at Bishop Carroll High School (going into my senior year). My family has been in the automotive business since 1969. My grandfather Bart Kilraine Jr owns his own auto and specialty store. He has been drag racing since the day he could drive. My father has had his own car shows”. Bart has
been around cars all of his life whether it is at car/truck shows, cruises, or drag racing. “The 1988 Cougar came into our possession when my dad, Bart Kilraine III, was looking for a ‘first car’ for me in summer of 2019.” This Cat was sitting in the parking lot of a local automotive shop. “When he decided to buy the Cougar, we became the car’s second owners.” The Mercury only had 86,000 miles on it at the time of purchase. The overall condition of the vehicle was excellent, looking nearly brand new. “My grandfather had a 1988 Cougar with a V6 and a 1986 Cougar that he put a 351 SHO out of a 1987 E150 van. He also drag races a 1969 Cougar Stock Eliminator in NHRA and IHRA. I had been into cars prior to this purchase but having one of my own surely helps know the value of one.” The Cat’s most unique attribute is that it is all stock: original interior, engine, paint, and transmission. Everything is essentially flawless. No modifications were made. The engine is a 3.8L V6 that has no oil leaks, and it runs exceptionally smooth and cool. The Mercury has a C-5 AOD Transmission, does not slip and shifts like new. “The only restoration needed was a good detailing job from top to bottom. Everything was in perfect condition.” Built in Dearborn, Michigan, the exterior Light Sandalwood Metallic paint matches the cloth interior. Inside are two front bucket seats with center
counsel with electronic controls for windows, driver seat, and both side mirrors. During the summer, Bart drives the car almost every day. “Around this area, you do not see a lot of daily drivers similar to this car. The Cougar runs great, without an issue. On a nice day, it is just so wonderful to cruise around and enjoy the ride. Feeling the low purr of the engine near your feet is terrific. On a nice hot summer day, it’s nice to have the option of having the windows down with the power controls. PA winters are not made for this car, so we park it and keep it in the garage”. This Cougar has never been driven in the winter which is reflected in its exceptional condition.
“We show the Cat about once or twice a month at mainly local shows or cruises. This year we are planning on attending All Ford Carlisle Nationals.”

MATT HIRSCHMAN SCORES FIFTH SBM WIN AT STAR SPEEDWAY
POCKETS $6,000 CHECK WITH DOMINATING PERFORMANCE By KYLE SOUZA EPPING, N.H. — Matt Hirschman wasn’t about to be denied. The Pennsylvania native, who is no stranger to Victory Lane on the Tri Track Open Modified Series circuit, returned to glory on Saturday night at Star Speedway in the ninth annual SBM race. But the ride to victory wasn’t one that came without difficulty, especially at the end. Hirschman dominated the beginning, taking the lead on lap 25 and leading through lap 83, before a controlled caution slowed the race. While some elected to stay out, Hirschman worked to pit road for a fresh Hoosier tire, the charge started back to the front from ninth position. He would eventually pass Matt Swanson for the top spot on a restart at lap 112 and never look back. It was the fifth win in the prestigious event for Hirschman, who is one of just two drivers to compete in all previous SBM races. The race was 121 laps, in honor of track owner and operator Bobby Webber’s son Tim Webber, who turned 21-yearsold the week of the race. The purse for the event was over $40,000, a figure that didn’t change post-COVID pandemic. Due to COVID-19, and guidance from the state of New Hampshire, Star Speedway ran at 50% capacity for the event in the grandstands, and sold out. Tri Track and Star officials made sure that all social distancing and safe health practices were in place. “I’ve always enjoyed coming here, winning the first time I have ever came here, and having all of this success I’ve had in this SBM race after that,” Hirschman said. “Going back to the original races, it was, and has been, a big deal for us.”
Earlier in the day, Ron Silk, Matt Hirschman, Andy Shaw and Andy Jankowiak won heat races, while Anthony Nocella and Calvin Carroll earned consi wins. Both heat and consi winners collected $300 courtesy of the Pepsi Challenge. Swanson, who passed 25 Modifieds en route to the front, earned a $500 hard charger bonus courtesy of Green Construction. Since pole sitter Austin Kochenash didn’t win the race, courtesy of Superior Refinishing, the next race on the circuit will pay a $600 bonus if the pole sitter wins the race. The Tri Track Open Modified Series returns to the track on Saturday, August 15, with the second stop of the season at Monadnock
Speedway. Daytona Coupe By CHRIS BENSON
Dreams sometimes come in phases as is the story behind this Gen II Factory Five Racing (FFR) “Type 65” or “Daytona Coupe” component car. This dream started in 2012 by purchasing a finished MKII FFR “Shelby Cobra”. That car was a common “Mustang donor build” and needed some updates and upgrades. This provided a great opportunity for me to wrench on the car and also inspired me to learn the history of Shelby’s Racing program from the 60s. It was a fun car to own and drive, but open cockpit roadster had a limited driving season in New England. It didn’t take long for the desire to build my own to develop and the history of Shelby’s Daytona Coupe intrigued me. Eventually I decided to sell the Cobra and build my dream car using all of the knowledge gained by working on it. That dream car was this Daytona Coupe Photos by Kayli Piez; Stacey Venancio, Model

and Factory Five Racing just so happened to offer a kit to build it. Most people recognize the more common Shelby “Cobra” or “Roadster” and know at least something about it. The “Dayton Coupe” however is more of a mystery because only six original race cars were ever built by Shelby and none of those ever saw street use. The goal of these race cars was to be more aerodynamic then the roadster and achieve higher top speeds on the racetrack. On June 16, 2016, my buddy Troy Enos and I drove to Factory Five Racing in Wareham, Mass to pick up the Daytona kit which consists of a powder coated frame, fiberglass body and over 40 boxes of parts. The beauty of building these cars is the blank canvas. As the project manager you

get to choose the motor, transmission, rear end, wheels, tires, paint and a host of other options to really make it your own, which appealed to me after owning a car someone else built. One part of the build I did not want to tackle on my own was the engine. The entire car is custom, so a “Crate Engine” wasn’t going to cut it. Karl’s East Coast Speed, Warwick, RI, custom built the engine starting with a Dart Block and filled it with go fast goodies. It measures 363 cubic inches and is topped off with AFR Renegade Heads, Moroso valve covers, Edelbrock Victor Jr intake and an MSD Atomic EFI system. A March Performance pulley system out front keeps everything rolling smooth including the power steering and heat/AC. A Tremec TK0 600 gearbox transfers all the power and torque from the engine via a short drive shaft (it is literally 10” long) to a 2015 mustang Super 8.8. center section with 3.55 gears. The 17” FR500 matte black wheels with 315 Nitto NT555 G2’s out back and 275’s up front help to keep a grip on the road. Getting the car to stop takes equal thought, so all four corners are equipped with Wilwood brakes. The calipers have 6 pistons up front and 4 pistons in the rear along with 13” rotors. The independent front and rear suspension utilize Koni Red coil-over shocks to smooth out the ride along with front and rear sway bars to dial in the handling for track and autocross use. As with any project, you have to stay focused and understand that there will be bumps in your build road (kids, trips and getting a competition SCCA road racing license were some of mine). I took the help when and where I could get it and I would like to thank Troy Enos, ACE Powder Coating, Mike Everson and Mike Williams (Painter) for all their guidance and help. A huge thank you to Karl and Kevin from Karl’s East Coast Speed where old school and new school meet at one shop. Builds, welding, fabrication, dyno tuning and simple maintenance can all be done in one place. When I am in the area, I always stop by the shop to see what they are working on. One week it might be a muscle car in for a tune up or a 1,000+ HP drag car. And the next week it could be a brand new car getting tuned on the dyno or one of my favorites a vintage truck. It may have taken almost four years to complete with many challenges along the way, but as Frank said, “I did it my way” And it was well worth it!. The car is a blast to drive and puts down 380 HP and 370 Torque at the rear wheels.

ECONN MOTORSPORTS ANNOUNCES CANCELLATION OF AUGUST 19 RACE AND AUGUST 5 PRACTICE By TERRY EAMES THOMPSON SPEEDWAY MOTORSPORTS PARK Due to mounting concerns over the health and economic effects of COVID-19, Econn Motorsports announced they are not moving forward with the traditional Bud 150 which had been scheduled for August 19th at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park. An open practice previously scheduled for August 5th has also been canceled. The recent outbreaks of COVID-19 cases associated with professional sporting events was chief among the reasons for the decision.

“We had initially thought that the virus would be of minimal concern by now, but the numbers are still very concerning”, said Terry Eames of Econn Motorsports. “We remain committed to keeping oval track racing alive at Thompson and will continue to work with the Hoenig family about the possibility of events later in the year”, Eames added

She’s Back! : The 2015 Z28
Lauryn “Hotwheels” Pontiac-Vernancio
The weekend of the North East Auto Show was intriguing with new models introduced from all makes to say the least. What really hit home with us was the all new 2015 Camaro Z28 on the showroom floor. Not only did it bring back memories from when it was first introduced in 1967 when the Chevrolet Camaro first
was produced, but it also brought with it a whole new version of retro-fitted power. This new version of the original bad boy holds a whopping 7.0 V8 engine (firing off at 505 horsepower and 481 foot pounds of torque) that is pulled forward by a six speed TREMEC TR6060 transmission and a rear wheel drive high performance TORSEN helical limited-slip differential. Braking power is far from obsolete with Brembo carbon-ceramic performance
four wheel anti-lock disc brakes and there are Multimatic DSSV dampers. A dual-mode performance exhaust gives the car a nice rumble but will surely not cause any headaches. The car is lubricated by a dry sump oiling system and has a standard track-designed cooling system that is liquid to liquid between the oil lubrication, the transmission, and differential. The chassis is rolled off by nineteen inch forged aluminum wheels with high performance Pirelli PZeroTrofeo R “summer only” tires.

I called the guy and told him I would send him a $100 check, if he would hold it for me (which he did)”. He had purchased the car from the original owner and had plans for it, but let it sit outside under a tree for a year. The next day Terisa went to the bank and acquired a loan. “All the years of paying my bills on time and working hard had paid off, whew”. After buying a one-way ticket to Sacramento. then renting a car, she met the owner and looked over the Comet. “I took her for a test drive and 50| Motorhead Magazine - August 2020

ered wipers.” At the time of the sale, the mileage on the car was 67,000, and now the Comet has 70,000 miles. “The original owner was a lady named Thelma Clemons and was purchased in December 1961, so I figured she wanted one of the first ones out! She purchased the car from Miracle Mercury in
ercury Comet Culver City, CA. It still has the original plates and license plate frames!” Terisa has all the original purchase paperwork (drawn up on a typewriter) and most all the service records from the original owner. “I have since named her ‘Thelma’ after the original owner. I’m pretty sure the Comet was a ‘grocery getter’, and she was kept in lovely condition.” One item arose, the original 170 head needed replacement, so a 200 head was installed. However, the block numbers still match the VIN as well as the original special ordered with the 3 speed Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission. Besides a new radiator and battery, everything else is original. It still has the generator and vacuum powered wipers. No modifications to the breaks or electrical system have been made. “I did the work along with my boyfriend at the time.” This S-22 is the sport version. It has bucket seats with a console in the middle and 3 taillights instead of 2 that are on the standard model. It also has extra badging that the standard model didn’t have. “Finding information on this particular car with its specific color (even with the original paperwork) has been difficult. Although it is a 1962, most information references the standard 1961 or the 1962 base model. For instance, the rearview mirror, I believe, was replaced, but it was put in the wrong place. There does not appear to be any repairs where the original mirror would go. I have spent countless hours researching the details of this make and model.” Terisa does not drive it as often as she would like because she am trying to
keep the mileage down. “However, when I do, I am in complete bliss! Since there is no power steering or power brakes, it can be a beast to turn! It’s obviously not a tire burner, but I like cruising speed so that’s fine with me!” One of the Mercury’s most unique features is the gorgeous color, and overall it is close to its original condition. “I love that it is a 2-door model and that it is the S-22 special edition. I love the crosshair ornaments on the hood and the retro look. This Comet and I are a perfect match!” CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

BUSINESS PROFILE By JIM WEICHERDING Peter Sacchetti ran the family business for his parents for 25 years and purchased the agency 4 years ago. He was able to expand the Sacchetti Insurance business into three more states. The insurance agency has grown 28% over the last 4 years. This last year has been very trying for everyone and Peter’s assistant, Paul Blondin, and himself, are the only two people running the agency today. Peter noted, that they recently lost an employee that worked for his father, Richard Sacchetti, and him, off and on, for 15 years. That individual has recently retired. Peter was extremely sad and upset to see him go but he stood up from behind his office desk and gave him a squeeze type of hug because he truly loved him. He still does. That man’s name is Manuel Leitao. He is missed daily in the agency. Manuel still helps Peter a few hours a month doing accountant tasks and some office paperwork. Since the middle of March, their insurance company’s “new” business has been way off because there are no, or very few, classic car shows or cruise nights happening and that was the bulk of their business.
Sacchetti Classic Insurance is a very popular insurance agency with classic car and truck owners here in the region. They are still holding their own due to their “great” customers sending other classic car and truck owners their way for their insurance coverage because they know that Peter strives on giving the good old customer services that you just don’t find with most insurance agencies anymore. It is very difficult running an insurance agency and with the Coronavirus added into the formula it is even harder to run and manage this type of business. Richard and Peter Sacchetti beat the odds and not only stayed working together over the years but became very successful along the way because Peter thought that his dad, Richard, was the best boss, teacher, mentor, partner and best friend any son could ask for. Working within the confines of a family owned business is very stressful but they found a way to make it work and give their customers the best quality service and insurance coverage possible. I personally know both Richard and Peter and over the years they have always been very kind, considerate and supportive of me and my community safety efforts and campaigns at area classic car and truck shows as well as cruise nights and they support many other automotive clubs, events and charities.

Birthday family awaits cruise
Cruising to Help Community By ROB MAY Stay at Home has adversely effected graduations (at all levels), birthdays (of any year), family functions, car shows, and more. In addition, simple family gatherings are interrupted. Cruises allow for vital participation in various
versions of these platforms. Thankfully, cruises to senior citizen housings, for example, allow for some positive connections to remain. Local schools have held graduation cruises, from individual home routes or longer drives. Families have been listing their need son Facebook – including event location, date, and time. Georgina Garcia May Photography highlights some recent events supported by Central California Mercury Club (CCMC). Rob still has his first car, owned since 1986, a 1969 Mercury Cougar (previously featured in Motorhead). Georgina has the car she received her driver license in – a 1969 Ford Mustang. Known for their car show efforts and car articles, they decided to branch out to discuss these vital events for us. Speaking of car shows, sadly, the 2020 season has been put on indefinite hold (at least in California). Cruises have become a great outlet to get out as well as embrace the community.

A typical event consists of a cruise route or single location to drive-by. Birthday celebrations may be a cruise past a house or defined corner intersection. Sometimes, an initial meeting place is set (following distance rules). Decorations are encouraged. Cruising certainly includes classic cars; however, we now see a wide range of vehicles participating. Your daily drivers are needed. What is important is your support of these events in your Continued Next Page
local areas that have been greatly impacted. When available, emergency crews have also provided cheer to these events. With restaurants reopening, we (CCMC) had our first meet and lunch in July 2020 (before they reclosed)! Cruising For A Cause, is one example of a Facebook page related to Central California that lists local events needing your participation. There are various
Emergency crews supporting cruises
pages for different regions. Your city and local group may have their own way of advertising. Birthdays and brief restaurant openings were more than enough reason to celebrate these past months. Here are some examples to give ideas for you to support: Items that need you can be almost any day and anytime, not just on the weekends.
Central California Mercury Club (CCMC) met on the East side of Home Depot in the morning at 1030am to line up and review the route of the day’s activities on June 13th. The three oldest cars in attendance were 1967 Cats. The Foust family (Lompoc) brought out their ’67 (featured in a previous Motorhead). With a student at Cabrillo, they have been promoting the annual Cabrillo High School car show (sponsored by CCMC). That show moved their planned May 2nd date to Sat Nov 21. Tim Baal (Orcutt) rolled the odometer three times on his ’67 Cougar which now has over 325,000+ miles! George Woehlke (Santa Maria) – who along with Rob May (Lompoc) co-founded CCMC had his 1967 as well. George is known for being one of the most active members of CCMC going to as any car shows as he can. Tom Rauch (Santa Barbara) with his Bullitt Mustang was the farthest south participant. Tom is known for his Canadian built 1956 Mercury often seen at car shows and collecting awards! (Tom’s ’56 was featured in a previous Motorhead). Georgina Garcia May Photography’s 1969 Mustang also stretched its legs. Motorhead and CCMC encourages everyone to support future cruising events. The need is great especially during these difficult times. All vehicles are welcome in any condition: cars, trucks, classics to daily drivers! Supporting your neighborhood is vital whether it is a birthday, lunch meet, graduation, senior citizen visit, general cruise, or other special event to celebrate
Our first event on a Saturday, featured drivers waving as they drove by to honor Emmalilly’s 11th birthday in Lompoc! Lance Tennyson posted this birthday item for his daughter on Facebook’s Cruising For Causes. This and others have become very import FB pages as the means to formally in person celebrate with large groups is hindered due to Corona. Tying them to a car related item and drive-by function allows for a show of support while

still practicing safe distancing. Emmalilly’s family handed out Twinkies and welcomed the neighborhood’s in vehicle attendance.
Meet and lunch at Eddie’s Grill Lompoc
Vehicles of all kinds arrived for the 11am Meet and Lunch venue on another Saturday. Two major clubs (Central California Mercury Club (CCMC) and 805 Fast Fords) teamed together to form the bulk of the cars. Representing San Luis Obispo to Santa Barbara, seven Ponies and five Cats filled the parking lot at the Eddie’s Grill Meet and Lunch (Lompoc). Recently returning to offering dine-in eating (lasted less than a month!), their full menu was available. Social Distancing was demonstrated outside and inside Eddie’s. (Every other table was utilized with the others marked closed).

Etch puts the gas pedal to the floor and launches towards the heavily wooded area on the backroads hoping to escape the pursuing police officers. Sirens can be heard off in the distance while people still video record the OUTLAW GTO pass by them at a high rate of speed to a yet unknown destination far away from prying eyes and police officers in hot pursuit. The GTO is ramping up its speed as the sirens off in the distance appear to be getting closer. They could be coming from any direction. Etch doesn’t want to stick around to see what happens next. He just wants to get the hell out
of the area as quickly as possible. He finally sees the highway on ramp and exits from the backroad onto an open freeway again. OUTLAW is easier to handle on a highway rather than on any backroads. It’s way too powerful and not really set up for twists and turns. OUTLAW was built to go straight and go straight really, really, fast. Etch does not hear any sirens or see any police cruisers now that he is traveling at a higher rate of speed and his GTO’s dual exhaust sounds like thunder clapping all around him but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t out there looking for him. Etch puts the pedal to the metal
again and launches down the empty highway. The law will be closing in soon enough but not yet. Etch’s OUTLAW GTO is flat out fast but police officers have many vehicles and radios to attempt stopping him dead in his tracks. Etch is all alone and he has no idea where his pursuers are at any given moment. The stress and anxiety is hard to handle. Almost as hard as handling an eight hundred horsepower classic muscle car being chased by the law.

Light Aqua ’6 By ROB MAY and DWIGHT WALTH Light Aqua Mercury cars, especially 1969 Cougar ‘E Color code’, are a favorite of Rob May, director of Central California Mercury Club CCMC. This standard model Cat, owned by Dwight Walth, makes its den in Gilbert, AZ with Dwight’s wife, Lisa. They split their time between Gilbert and a cabin in Pinetop in the White Mountains of Arizona. They have two kids, Emily (who lives in Nashville, TN) and Ken (who lives in Chandler, AZ). Dwight was born and raised in Aberdeen, SD, which is where the history with the Cougar started (Spaulding’s Dealership).
was always highly prized for its looks and style even then and I think it was important to both my brother and me that we kept it in the family. The beautiful paint color, the low sleek stance, and growl were very much envied by everyone who saw the car. I love driving it now and appreciate the power and feel of the road that it gives com-
“Retired in March of this year from the City of Phoenix, I worked for the Office of Arts and Culture as Director of Cultural Facilities, taking care of city-owned cultural facilities where nonprofits operate, such as the Phoenix Art Museum, Phoenix Theatre, Arizona Opera, Ballet Arizona and others.” Classic music and maintaining a fine Culture is in Dwight’s background. He is a musician by education and has a doctorate degree in voice performance from Arizona State University. “I am an active soloist and choir conductor at a church in Mesa, AZ. He had a career of presenting “classic” music performances for audiences. “My job at the Office of Arts and Culture was about preserving and maintaining the city’s Cultural institutions — Museums, opera, ballet and theaters. So, it is a link to sharing, preserving and maintaining the classic culture including a classic Cat.” The Cougar was the first car Dwight purchased. “In 1977, when I was 17, I purchased it from my brother, Craig, who is 8 years older than me. Craig was the first owner, having purchased it as a Spaulding’s dealer demo in 1970 for approximately $3,000. Before the Cougar, my father let me drive a 67 Mustang, so I had a good “classic car” experience as a teen.” “My brother, having married and starting a family, decided that the Cougar wasn’t a suitable family car. pared to my daily driver.” E paint code is Light Aqua in the 1969 Mercury world (known as Aztec Aqua for the 1969 Mustang). The interior is White with Black accents. The engine is a 351W mated to the FMX transmission. “Wayne and the boys at ATEC in Mesa, AZ
’69 Cat in AZ keep the car in great running order. Over the years, the car reflected various “fads” of the day, including an 8-track cassette player added to the center console. A CB radio was mounted next to the floor shifter for several years. There also was a time when it was converted to propane fuel in the gas rationing period of the 70’s. After my brother purchased the car, he converted from 2 to 4 barrel, installed
a hi rise Edelbrock intake manifold, and dual exhaust. The keystone Mag wheels were added in 72. Because this is an Arizona car without AC, it spends the summer months in the garage. It is a weekend, pleasure driver car from September to April. Usually its biggest road trip each year is to the “Run to the Pines” car show in Pinetop each September. “ “The car is a dream to drive. The connection to the road and the power/torque to the wheels on acceleration is something unique to the classic car era. I love driving it around town and running errands because it always includes a conversation with a stranger asking questions about it. The Cat is really special to our family and the bond between me and my brother—-which is important due to our age difference—and offers a rare opportunity for both of us to stick our heads under the hood.”
