BEATO Felice, “A 97. Crucifixion & cut of the head”, Kizo, Japan, 1865-1868. Rare albumen photograph (26x20.3cm), partly handcoloured with title on negative, mounted on cardboard (28x23.5cm). On verso, albumen photograph 14x9cm depicting view from a port in Japan, probably Yokohama. Between 1863 and 1877, during a period that foreign access within the country was greatly restricted, Beato took a stunning array of views, portraits, ethnographic images, and even macabre & unconventional scenes of the ate-Edo and early-Meiji era Japan.
