WELCOME
Our partnership with UNICEF is now in its 13th year. In that time I’m proud to say that together, we have raised over £2.5m for UNICEF, helping over 2.2 million vulnerable and disadvantaged children worldwide. The Club is now in its second year of a three year project to raise a further £1m for UNICEF. The funds will provide 35 fully equipped child survival centres in Senegal, as well as transportation to deliver medical supplies to hard-to-reach communities. The child survival centres are a vital resource, providing essential care to new born babies and their mums. I’m delighted to report that we are on schedule to reach this three year target but we can’t do it alone. Your support this evening will prove invaluable to ensuring all 35 health centres are able to deliver care to those who need it most. As a UNICEF Ambassador I have witnessed first-hand the difference UNICEF makes to improving quality of life for those in need. The work United for UNICEF delivers can change the course of a child’s future – that is the impact we can achieve together. Everyone at Manchester United is passionate and committed to supporting this charity. Fundamentally, we believe in our commitment to improving the lives of children and we would like to thank you for sharing in that commitment by being here this evening. I am delighted that you are able to join us this evening and celebrate the life changing impact that United for UNICEF has made for some of the world’s most vulnerable children. 2012 has been an inspirational and unforgettable year for sport and tonight is an opportunity for us to acknowledge with pride the incredible power that sport has to motivate and inspire and thereby to make a deep and lasting difference for some of the world’s most vulnerable children. Thanks to your dedication and generosity at last year’s gala dinner thousands of families in Senegal now have access to life-saving health care. Thank you. The impact of United for UNICEF in transforming children’s lives is thanks to the commitment of the whole club – the management, players, staff and sponsors as well as fans from all over the world. Together we have raised awareness of some of the most important challenges facing children. Together we have funded innovative projects that are saving and improving the lives of young people in many countries. Together we can build a better world for every child. Every four seconds a child dies from a preventable cause. United for UNICEF is working hard to reach more of the most vulnerable children around the world to ensure that children everywhere survive and thrive. THE SENEGAL PROJECT For children in Senegal, reaching your fifth birthday is a reason to celebrate; one child in every 11 won’t have made it. Life is tough, but thanks to United for UNICEF and your continued support we are helping to change this. In the past year United for UNICEF has built 10 child survival centres and plans to equip a further 25 with everything that mums and babies need to ensure a child survives those first five years. These child survival centres will: • Provide medical fridges to store vital vaccinations and medication at the right temperature. • Promote behavioural change on basic health and sanitation issues including the importance of hand washing, HIV and AIDS awareness, and nutrition. • Provide malaria nets and advice on how to use them effectively. • Provide a motorcycle for each centre, allowing health workers to reach remote communities to deliver life-saving vaccines as part of their outreach work.

Each mini fridge that is bought tonight will supply a child survival centre with a medical fridge. These fridges store vaccinations and medication at the right temperature ensuring children receive lifesaving immunisations.
Malaria is the biggest killer of children under five in Africa. Purchasing a furry bug tonight will provide malaria nets for up to ten families, ensuring they sleep safe from malaria-carrying mosquitoes.
