Useful Information: Lisbon is the Portuguese capital. With about 1.000.000 people in flowing population, of which 500.000 is inhabitant, it is the largest and most populated city in all of Portugal. The city offers a wide variety of public services, of which includes a magnificent transportation network, with various bus routes and an extensive subway system. Also, for those that prefer to ride on a bicycle, the city has over gone multiple transformations in the past few years in order to accommodate for the needs of such a growing demand. The warmest months are July and August, with an average temperature, in the Summer, of about 26 oC and, in the Winter, of 12 oC. Housing The University of Lisbon offers a few housing options for exchange students. Due to the fact that these are limited, those who desire these means of accommodation should file the proper papers with some earliness. Housing in one of the University’s residencies is subject to a monthly payment, fixated annually. For students that do not wish to accommodate themselves in one of the residencies, Lisbon offers a good variety of housing options, with multiple types of architecture and sizes, from the more classical to the most modern. Food The University of Lisbon has multiple cafeterias and a Campus canteen. The average price around Campus is about 5₏ for 9
a complete meal. Although, some locations, like the canteen and the Faculty of Law, offer complete meals for a lower price. The average is about 2.40€. Transportation Lisbon’s public transportation consists in three main companies: Carris (Bus); Metro (subway); CP (train). The price of a monthly pass in Zone L (Lisbon) is 35€. For areas outside of Lisbon, the price varies according to the region you’re located in. To get to the Faculty of Law, the main means of transportation are bus and subway. Visa Exchange students that come from countries that do not belong to the Schengen Space should gather the proper papers in due time in order to gain an entry Visa into Portugal. The Faculty of Law organizes and promotes an amount of extra curriculum activities for its students. These activities are, by norm, the responsibility of the Academic Association of the Faculty of Law of Lisbon (for short, in Portuguese, AAFDL). Sports and other sorts of clubs Regarding sports, we offer four teams: Rugby, Football, Futsal and Volleyball. At the academic level, there are multiple clubs (political, cultural and religious ones) and the European Law Student Association (ELSA), all of them located inside the Faculty itself.

Note: For those exchange students that don’t quite dominate the Portuguese language, the University of Lisbon offers Courses in Portuguese Language for Foreigners.

Frequently asked questions of Erasmus students 1 – Where do I make photocopies in the Faculty? • You have two copy centers. Both are located close to AAFDL (Academic Association) and the copies can be paid either in cash or by ATM; • You can make photocopies inside the Library. To do this, you have a machine on the upper floor where you can acquire a card and recharge it as many times as you want. This payment has to be made with cash; • You can also acquire the previously mentioned card in the Treasury. This one can be paid either with cash or by ATM. 2 – What are the assessment methods? There are two methods of evaluation: an Ordinary and a Special assessment method. • The Ordinary assessment methods are Method A (or Continuous Assessment) and Method B (or Final Evaluation). ► Method A is intended to ascertain the student’s knowledge in the course, given the work done throughout the semester. The elements of this evaluation method is the written test and other elements such as participation, written work research or investigation. The weight of the evaluation methods is determined by the Regent Professor of the respective class. However, the written test can not be assigned more than 50% of the classification of the class. There are three options from here on out:
17
1. If the grade is between 8 and 11, you will have another exam, which will determine if you also need to do an oral exam; 2. If you have 12 or higher, you passed. You might want to do an oral exam in order to improve your grade; 3. If it is less than 8, you’ll need to do an extra exam (Recurso). These are limited to four a year. By the way, if you fail on the oral exam or the other written exam present on point 1), you’ll necessarily have to take this exam too. ► Method B is intended to establish the student’s knowledge on the class through a single written exam. From here, there are three options. 1. If the grade is between 8 and 11, you will have to have an oral exam; 2. If it is 12 or higher, you passed. You might want to do an oral exam to improve; 3. If it is less than 8, you’ll need to do an extra written exam (Recurso). These are limited to four per year. • The Special assessment method only applies to optional courses, which can be adapted to the specificities of the course. • NOTE: The evaluation method must be chosen upon registration and you may change the same within 15 days elapsed after the start of the classes. 3 – Where can I get the books assigned by teachers?
18
Within the Faculty, you have the AAFDL bookstore and Coimbra Editora, both of which have almost all of the books
you’ll need. However, most of them can go out of sale very quickly due to high demand. You also have a small room next to the Amphitheatre 1, where you can get some important book for the First Year like the books of Profs. Ruy and Martim de Albuquerque, História do Direito Português (History of Portuguese Law). Outside the Faculty, there are bookstores specialized in the sale of Law books such as Almedina (Atrium Saldanha shopping mall), Coimbra Editora (Chiado). You can also find sections for Law books in FNAC (Colombo Shopping Centre, Vasco da Gama Shopping Centre, Armazéns do Chiado), El Corte Ingles (São Sebastião metro station) and Bertrand (Avenida de Roma, Chiado, Colombo Shopping Centre, Amoreiras Centre, Campo Pequeno Shopping Centre). For online purchases, we suggest sites like: www.livraria. aafdl.pt; www.wook.pt or www.amazon.co.uk (for foreign bibliography). 4 – What is the “Secretaria Virtual” (Virtual Office) and how does it work? The Virtual Office is an online platform where you can have access to the written and oral examinations and their respective grades. This allows you to consult in a more convenient manner instead of having to direct yourselves to the Faculty’s Secretary in person. In order to access your personal Virtual Office, go to (https://fd.academicos.ul.pt/fd/page). In case you want to use the Internet throughout the Campus of the University of Lisbon, you just have to access the “guest-ULisboa” server and introduce your academic e-mail account and it’s respective password. 19
5 – Is there a truancy regime? When you consult your academic calendar, you will notice that you have both Theoretical and Practical classes. The lectures in the Theoretical classes are given by the regent of the class in the accordingly amphitheater towards the whole class (A, B and Night) and there is no obligatory attendance, although we advise you to go to the maximum theoretical classes as possible in order to facilitate your future study. The Practical classes are taught by a variety of Assistant Professors in normal classrooms in which you are obliged to attend. You will be inserted in what is called a “sub-turma”, which is consisted of about 30 to 50 students.
