AN EDUCATIONIST AND HER PASSION FOR CHILDREN interview byy HAFSAH ABUBAKAR ABUBAKA MATAZU & JAMILA DAUDA FREDA
Hadiza Yar’dua Tuggar is married with three boys and is the director o of Woodentots International School. She is from Kastina, her dad is from Mashi and her he mother is from Borno; she is Shuwa. Hadiza Had was born on the 21st April 1979 and has tw two siblings.
Educational background I started my primary school at St. Ann Primary School, Kaduna before I transferred to NNPC Staff School, Kaduna. Then my dad was transferred to Port Harcourt so I attended the Air Force school there and then went to Essence International School for my secondary education. After that I went to the UK where I completed my secondary education. I did my A Levels at a school called Farringtons in Kent where I studied Business Admin, Cooking and Literature. Then I went to Richmond, the American University in England. I studied Business Admin and majored in Marketing there. I wanted to be in advertising and marketing. Back then it sounded all flashy but then reality set in and Nigeria didn’t really have much of a market for us to do that. Career background I got a job at an oil company and I was there for a year before I came back to Nigeria, did my NYSC then went back to the UK once again to do my Montessori course so it was a decision between doing my masters and that. It was a struggle because my father didn’t understand the whole Montessori stuff and was
like this isn’t what he paid for me to go to school for but this school is the outcome of the course. I came back and got married in 2005, got a job at Legacy Pension and afterwards moved to Bank PHB which is now Keystone. I was there until I had my first child and then I decided that I needed to go and do my own thing so that’s how I decided to start this school and here we are. Growing up It was really fun and nice. It was a small family unit; we were very close. We did everything together, thoughmy dad was hardly in the picture because he was working with NNPC when it started so he was mostly at work. It was all family holidays and visiting friends. Challenges Professionally, I would say when I started this school, raising capital. And it’s a school, so you always have to encounter the teachers and parents so I knew I had to grow in terms of my communication skills and interacting with people. But alhmadulillah we have been able to rise up to the challenge. Personally, I think I used to procrastinate a lot so I learnt to
channel myself and tell myself that I can’t achieve this without hard work. I had to discipline myself, sit down and think about my faith because there’s a difference between being religious and spiritual. So again I think at some point you need to realize that you need to be in tune with your God. Life’s lessons Don’t take anything for granted. One minute you have it the next minute you don’t. One minute your loved one is here the next they’re gone. Cherish every moment and count your blessings. There is a quote in the Qur’an that I always go by; “which of the blessings of your Lord would you deny”. I use that in every
situation and scenario. The most rewarding part of my career Coming to the school and seeing the kids, what they are learning. I am very passionate about education and I am realizing that the foundation of education in Nigeria is not as good as the rest of the world. So for me coming in and seeing what the kids can do and achieve is very rewarding and looking at my kids as well, how I can be a better mum and bring them up well. I just want to be able to give very child the best education. Fond childhood memories I miss being with my siblings because we all live in our own

CO V E R // HADIZA YAR’DUA TUGGAR houses now and I miss us being together. We were in school together and everything. My typical day I wake up in the morning, pray, take my coffee then make sure everything at home is in order and then I come to work and I am here till about 4 to 4:30, sometimes 6. I wait for my kids to close from Islamiyya so we can go home together then we shower, eat, do homework and bed by 8;30 so I get my me time where I sit and watch TV, catch up on emails, instagram and all that before I call it a night by around 12 to 1 am. Most cherished gift It was from my mum. She went outside the box for one of my birthdays and got me a bedside lamp and I am sure if she reads this she is going to be like oh my God! The lamp came in the shape of a sponge, an iron sponge then with a lightbulb. It was really special and different and I still have it back in England. How I met my husband He said we met at a polo tournament in Kaduna because I grew up in Kaduna but I honestly don’t remember. I remember meeting him through a mutual friend.
I SLEEP AND TUNE OFF. I LIKE TO READ TOO. I USED TO READ A LOT LIKE JOHN GRISHAM. AT THE MOMENT I AM TRYING TO READ ‘HOW TO BE A BETTER LEADER’. I AM ON THIS JOURNEY OF TRYING TO BE A BETTER LEADER ESPECIALLY IN EDUCATION morning and at night is to recite a few verses from the Qur’an from my phone. My favourite fashion items Shoes and bags. Flats or heels Flats any day. What I wouldn’t be caught wearing Now being a wife and a mother there are certain stuff I can’t wear; so nothing too revealing or short. Best travel destination It has to be Madrid, Spain, because my husband lived and schooled in Spain and he told me so much about it and he was always like he has to take me there someday. So two years ago, on my birthday, he
Most cherished attribute of his He is very selfless. He has made it very clear that his family is his main priority. Top things on my wish list To go to my permanent site school wise. I want to get a bigger space for the school. Secondly to reach out to as many orphaned kids as I can. I am currently sponsoring about a hundred of them in Kaduna and being a humanitarian is very important to me. Thirdly to travel and have nice holidays with my husband till we become old and also to get my mum a first class ticket to go for Umrah (lesser haj) with the family this year for her 60th birthday. My favourite music on replay I’ve always liked Boys 2 Men and there’s this song I and my kids love by Silento called Watch Me. First app I check in the morning and at bedtime MuslimPro. surprised me and just came in a day before and said “take the kids to their grandmothers’, we’re going”. So it was something really special, he put thoughts into it and it was just the two of us and we spent five days.It was really nice. How I relax I sleep and tune off. I like to read too. I used to read a lot like John Grisham. At the moment I am trying to read ‘How To Be A Better Leader’. I am on this journey of trying to be a better leader especially in education. My favourite quote “Which of the blessings of your Lord would you deny”. my favourite food Tuwon shinkafa, miyan taushe or miyan gyada. my definition of style Comfortable and modest. My favourite fashion designer Reedas. It’s a Nigerian brand and she gets my style. Favourite perfume, designer bag and shoes Addict by Christian Dior, shoes should be Giuseppe Zannotti and I don’t have a favorite bag. Mum’s advice that stuck with me When I got married she told me not to start
something I won’t be able to continue and she always tells me I need to save. She thinks I spend too much on shoes and bags. My favourite sport, colour and weather I’m not really a sports person but I take exercise and fitness really seriously. But maybe football because my kids and husband are football junkies. Colour is red and weather is not too hot and not too cold. My favourite day of the week Sunday, because it is my quiet day and it’s me and my husband’s time. Since we got married we always dined out on Sundays unless one of us happens to travel. My beauty routine I just do a pedicure and manicure every 10 days and I stick to one product. My role models My mum because she tells it as it is and it’s difficult to get people that will look you in the eye and tell you what you need to hear. She is very humble and spiritual. Looking back what I would tell a younger me Not to worry and everything that will be, will be. Crying won’t change the current scenario and I did a lot of that in my teenage years, asking why me?But now I just tell myself not to worry about it and have faith in everything. Legacy I am gearing towards the humanitarian side of things so I would want to be remembered as someone who made a difference in people’s lives; children’s lives to be more specific. And I hope for my school to grow and for my children to appreciate it and perhaps at least one of them to take over.

ucumbers belong to the same plant family as squash, pumpkin and watermelon which is the Cucurbitaceae family. Cucumbers are made up of mostly 95% water, which helps you stay hydrated. However, with vitamin K, B vitamins, copper, potassium, vitamin C, and manganese, cucumbers can help you to avoid nutrient deficiencies. Also, cucumbers contain unique polyphenols and other compounds that may help reduce your risk of chronic diseases and much, much more. * Protects Your Brain: Cucumbers contain an anti-inflammatory flavonol called fisetin that appears to play an important role in brain health. Fisetin has been found to prevent progressive memory and learning impairments. * Reduce Your Risk of Cancer: Cucumbers contain polyphenols called lignans, which may help to lower your risk of breast, uterine, ovarian and prostate cancers. They also contain phytonutrients called cucurbitacins, which also have anti-cancer properties. *Fight Inflammation: Cucumber extract helps reduce unwanted inflammation. * Antioxidant Properties: Cucumber contains numerous antioxidants, including the well-known vitamin C and beta-carotene,which contains antioxidant flavonoids, such as quercetin, apigenin, luteolin, and kaempferol. These provide additional benefits and help fight cancer and lower your risk of chronic diseases including heart disease. * Freshen Your Breath: Cucumber helps to rid of your mouth of odour-causing bacteria. Eating cucumbers also helps to release excess heat in your stomach, which is said to be a primary cause of bad breath. * Manage Stress: Cucumbers contain multiple
B vitamins, including vitamin B1, vitamin B5, and vitamin B7 (biotin). B vitamins are known to help ease feelings of anxiety and buffer some of the damaging effects of stress. *Support Your Digestive Health: Cucumbers are rich in two of the most basic elements needed for healthy digestion: water and fiber. Adding them to your juice or salad can help you meet the ideal of amount of fiber your body needs. Cucumber skins contain insoluble fiber, which helps add bulk to your stool. This helps food to move through your digestive tract more quickly for healthy elimination. * Maintain a Healthy Weight Cucumbers are very low in calories. The soluble fiber in cucumbers dissolves into a gellike texture in your gut, helping to slow down your digestion. * Support Heart Health: Cucumbers contain potassium, which is associated with lower blood pressure levels. A proper balance of potassium both inside and outside your cells is crucial for your body to function properly.

SIMPLE WAYS TO CARE FOR OUR UNDER-GARMENTS by JAMILA DAUDA FREDA
O
ur undergarments are often the unsung heroes of your wardrobe. Things like our bras, pants, singlets, boxers etc stay hidden but always give us a nice feeling and make us feel great when we wear them. How you wash these behind-thescenes superstars can create a big difference in how long they last. Get a laundry bag that’s specifically for delicates, which will protect your undergarments from getting roughed up by other clothes. Be sure to choose a delicate cycle with cool water and use a gentle detergent. Some detergents are even formulated for hand wash or gentle cycles. Also, when you hand wash underwear and other delicates, go for roomtemperature or cool water, and stick with the recommended amount of detergent. 1. Use a colour-safe bleach to take care of bacteria.
2. Apply a stain remover on underwear stains before throwing them in the wash. 3. Wash your undies on a delicate cycle in a separate load to minimize fabric friction. 4. Turn your underwear inside out when washing to further reduce the wear and tear on delicate fabric; this will get your underwear cleaner, too. 5. Air-drying your underwear will greatly increase the longevity of your under-duds. High heat breaks down fabrics, and in some cases destroys them. 6. Snip loose threads on your older underwear and use a fabric shaver to reduce pilling. 7. Been to the gym makes your underwear get the brunt of your sweat. So, set aside several pairs that you wear only to the gym. You shouldn’t be working out in your topshelf underwear.

KIDDIES WORLD
PERFECT SHOES FOR PRESCHOOLERS by JAMILA DAUDA FREDA
W
hen it comes to shopping for a preschooler’s shoes, it’s really important to go to a store and have someone size your child correctly. What works best for another kid’s feet, might be different for yours. But the criteria for preschool appropriate footwear is basically the same. Preschool has two rules about shoes, no sandals of any type which may include Crocs and no laces. In addition, you need to find shoes that are big enough for your child to grow into so that their heel will not easily come out. Another important criteria for toddler shoes is the flexibility, thickness and contour of the sole. You want
something that has a lot of cushion; is not too stiff and is good for running around. Here are some shoes you can try on for your child: * Naturinos are expensive but they are beautifully constructed shoes that have an ideal sole for little kids’ feet, creating a similar feeling to walking on sand, are highly recommended because it has enough room to grow without the heel popping out. * One of the best toddler is Stride Rite. They have a variety of girly selections, which is important for the girls. Their soles are perfectly contoured for active play. Most of the Stride Rites shoes have the lip on the heel, a thick sole and fit well. * Sneakers and boots. These are good because they generally don’t constrain the foot and allow for proper development. Also, sneakers are usually constructed out of canvas and pliable leather, allowing the shoe to mold to a child’s foot for a good fit. Parents should not bother about the cost but should bother about the fittings first.

minerals, and a shot of energizing protein. In a blender, combine 3/4 cup milk, half a banana, a cup of frozen mixed berries, and 3 to 5 ice cubes. Blend until smooth and frothy. Pour into a glass and slurp with a fun straw. Oatmeal is a fantastic, fiber-rich breakfast for any age, but kids may complain that it’s too boring or tasteless. So make fun and delectable. The idea of “chocolate for breakfast” gets your kids running to the kitchen! To make, prepare half a cup of oats with 1 cup water or skim milk. Stir in cocoa powder, a little sugar, and a dash of vanilla extract into the prepared oatmeal, and then top with your children’s favorite fruits

like berries or half a sliced banana. This energy-boosting breakfast will keep them and you feeling full and satisfied. Avoid the fast food cheezy egg sandwich and do yours right at home which would have more nutrition and far less fat than most fast food options. Scramble 1 whole egg with 2 egg whites in a skillet coated with oil spray. Toast a whole grain English muffin and layer the bottom half with 1 slice Canadian bacon, 1 slice tomato, the scrambled eggs, and 1 slice reduced-fat cheddar cheese. Top with a squirt of optional ketchup or salsa, and the second half of English muffin.

P
ersian rugs are known as one of the oldest oriental rugs, they are true oriental rugs that are hand-knotted in the traditional rug weaving countries ranging from Romania, Turkey, Armenia, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, China and Mongolia. The weavers uses a Persian or Senneh knot for strength and clarity in the curvilinear designs. They never go out of style. They are
considered the finest rugs known to mankind. These rugs give your home ancient Arabic touch, oozing with sophistication. A Persian rug can be placed in any room of your choice. It gives a very fancy look to whichever room it is placed in. These rugs come in different sizes, designs and shapes. There’s the size that covers an entire room space, the center rug also exists and of course we
have the popular praying mat. People tend to use this type of rugs for just praying, but the fact is they are also a tool for home beautification. GLASSY DETAILING AND DECOR FOR HOMES by JAMILA DAUDA FREDA AND UCHE EZE
I
f you are looking for a way to lavishly decorate your home, without having to break the bank, then glass is your sure option. Glass is elegant and screams “class”. There’s just something about a house covered in glass. The shimmering effect of glass leaves the beholder in awe. Most people are frightened by the idea of glass decorations and glass details due to the frail nature of glass. Well, there are ways of incorporating glass details into your home decor without fear of failure. Glass tables are a very simple way of adding a little shimmer to your home. Whether it’s a glass center table or a glass dinning set,
it would still make a statement. Also, glass wares also work. Display of glass cups like the champagne flute, the wine glass and tea cups also speaks volume. Glass windows , these are my absolute favorite, they let the sunrays come in, giving your home a bright face...you could also have exquisite big king size mirrors hanging on the wall of your living room or pathways, corridors and some little glassy decor above your sofa because it gives the living room an enlarged look and so and so forth...make sure you give your home a glassy touch this time around.

Give your okro a seafood twist O by HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU
kro soup just got better because we can now play around with seafood. This twist to the original okro soup recipe is fun. You can choose the seafood you’d like to use which is quite limitless and will only increase the intensity of the flavor. With a lot of seafood in the mix, there is a unique blend of omega 3 and fatty acids which is highly beneficial for our health. You can make a big pot of it and freeze the leftovers to reheat for another day.
Okro soup INGREDIENTS • 5 large tatashe • 3 scotch bonnet peppers • 2 medium onions • 1 kg okro • 1 kg crab, cleaned and rinsed thoroughly • 1 kg medium tiger prawns, peeled and deveined • ½ kg shrimp, peeled and deveined • 1 kg croaker fish • 150 mls palm oil • 2 stock cubes • 3 teaspoons salt • 8 Tablespoons ground crayfish DIRECTIONS Deseed the tatashe and peel onions.
