PLS HELP, I’M SCARED I have been having irregular period in the last 4 months, I went to the hospital and they asked I run some tests, the doc said my LH and FSH is 2:1 and said I have some facial hair which means I have PCOs. My main concern is that the doc ask my husband and I to do a HSG and sperm count scan which I’m scared to have a child, had a pregnancy ectopic and a miscarriage. My normal period is 28 days but in the last 4 months it has changed from, 45 to 40 to 35 and still waiting for this month. Fatima The clinical features of facial hair and the LH to FSH ratio which is reversed, are signs of polycystic ovaries. Also the oligomenorrhea that is menstrual cycle length of more than 35 days but lees than 6months are possible pointers to PCOs. You also need to check your BMI (Body Mass Index). I agree with the doctor, you and your spouse should do the tests. If the test are normal then you can go for ovulation induction with timed intercourse.

CS AND NORMAL DELIVERY I had Caesarean section two years ago due to breech presentation. I am currently thirty nine weeks pregnant. Initially my doctor told me I could deliver by myself but two days ago after scanning and the weight was 3.8kg. He is insisting on Caesarean section. Can I not deliver by myself? Is it true if I have this Caesarean section I cannot deliver by myself again? Isioma, Kaduna Women must realize that the mode of delivery is immaterial the most important thing is a healthy baby and a healthy mother. After a previous Caesarean section and the fetal weight is above 3.5kg we discourage vaginal birth after Caesarean section. This is because of the risk of uterine rupture. In this case the estimated fetal weight is 3.8kg which could be slightly less or more. It is not advisable to try vaginal delivery. Also after two, caesarean section subsequent deliveries are usually by same route. Please, we encourge all who send questions or contributions to include at least their first name and town or city. MARIYA SIRAJO SANI //

CO V E R

FINDING DIGNITY AND HONOUR IN TEACHING interview by HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU & FAITH EJE

Mariya Sirajo Sani is the director of Starfield College Abuja. The 46-year-old mother of five and a grand-daughter is from Katsina State and has six siblings - four sisters and two brothers.

Educational background I started my primary education at Kaduna Capital School from 1975 to 1981. From there I went to the Federal Government Girls College Bakori in 1981 to 1986. I then went to Federal College of Education Katsina, from 1987 to 1990 for my Nigerian Certificate in Education, where I studied Maths and Integrated Science. After that I went to the University of Abuja, 1991 to 1995, from where I came out with a BSc. Education in Mathematics. I also have a master’s degree from the State University of New York, Buffalo Campus, which was run here in Abuja. Career background I am basically a teacher and I will always be a teacher. Actually, I

wanted to be a doctor but somehow I found myself in the teaching profession. From my college days, after my first teaching practice, I fell in love with teaching and from then on I have always seen myself as a teacher. After graduation I worked at Fou’ad Lababidi Islamic Academy for two years where I taught mathematics to JS2, JS3 and SS1 students. Afterwards, I went to Esteem International School where I started as a class teacher then assistant head teacher and I was finally made the head teacher in 2003. I was head teacher there for 12 years after which I left and started Starfield College. It is a secondary school, which started in September 2015. We started with 7 and 8 year olds and we now have 9 year olds. It is an Islamic British-Nigerian curriculum based school. Growing up Growing up was homely. We lived in a house in Kaduna, which was very

I ENJOY READING SO I MOSTLY DO THAT BEFORE I HEAD TO THE KITCHEN TO PREPARE DINNER FOR THE FAMILY large with a lot of trees and animals. We were very c close to nature. We climbed trees and a plucked fruits and we watched watche the animals grow. It was a monog monogamous home with my six siblings and my parents. My father cared very much about our education and made sure we went to the best bes schools and we had Islamic education edu as well. I completed the Qu’ran at the age of 11. My moth mother was also always there for us so it i was overall a lovely growing up experience. exp I always tell my children that growing up in Abuja now is n nothing compared to how much fun we had during our own childhood. childhood Challenges Well I thank A Allah for how my life has panned out ou but the challenges I have faced wer were after my secondary education. I went we to the College of Stu Advanced Studies, Zaria and I was studying to become a doctor. So I wrote w Maths, Biology an Chemistry. After and m first year, I wrote my my exam and I failed maths so I had to re-sit it. I studied my maths textbook and re-sat the exam

but failed it again and that meant I had to repeat the class. It was a big challenge for me and it wasn’t something I looked forward to at all. Then fortunately, my family and I were moving to Katsina from Kaduna and my father decided to find another school for me in Katsina and went to the Federal College of Education in Katsina and that was when I decided I had to get to the bottom of mathematics. So when he came with the list of courses I selected Math Integrated Science; I saw it as a challenge that I ought to conquer. Life’s lessons Whatever you are doing, you have to do it with passion and whatever and wherever you are, you treat people with respect. Do whatever you are doing with the fear of God, do it as perfectly as you can. Aspirations growing up I wanted to be a doctor and it was something that I wanted right from the beginning. It so happens that I ended up as a teacher but I still plan on doing PhD to become a doctor. So eventually I will go for it. Fond childhood memories Having free space to play and being able to enjoy nature and be close to it. We used to climb trees though our father didn’t like it. It was always fun so whenever he went out we would climb the tress and as soon as he came back we would rush down so he doesn’t catch us at it. Typical day I wake up before Fajr prayer and begin getting ready to go to work. I come to work and I go around to see what is happening and whatever needs to be done. I

CO V E R // MARIYA SIRAJO SANI then leave around 3pm and get back home around 4pm because of the traffic. When I get home I usually have something to do to while away my time. I enjoy reading so I mostly do that before I head to the kitchen to prepare dinner for the family. I always make sure I take part in the cooking in my house so that when the food turns out tasty I can take the credit. After that I relax and head to bed around 9 to 10 o’clock. Most cherished gift My most cherished gift are my children and I also got another cherished gift recently, a grandchild named after me. My husband & I My husband is actually my cousin but I didn’t know him growing up but I knew his elder brother. So he came to our house to visit and we greeted each other. But he came back again and said he has seen something that he is likes. So that’s how it all started and it ended up in marriage. Most cherished attribute of his He is very caring, God fearing and he puts his family first. I call myself his spare tyre because of how we can’t do without each other. Top 5 things on my wish list Starfield to grow into a bigger institution; to be able to get my doctorate degree; to see all my children graduate and become successful in their lives;for the excellent relationship I have with my husband to last till our deaths and then I pray for Paradise. Favourite type of music on replay I listen to Maher Zain and other Islamic songs and Hausa too. First app I check in the morning and at bedtime I always check WhatsApp and my email to see what is happening. Favourite fashion item I am a simple person but I can’t do without earrings and wristwatches. What I wouldn’t be caught wearing Anything that will show any part of my body. Best travel destination Saudi Arabia. I went for Umrah with my husband two years ago. The weather was very nice and where we stayed was nice also. I met new people from Singapore and the US and we connected and became friends. It was a nice trip. How I relax By reading, I love to read Favourite food I love local dishes especially Tuwon shinkafa with Miyar taushe or Egusi and Danwake. Definition of style Style is about a women looking modest. I believe a lot in modesty. And especially as a mother and a teacher and a role model, overall, I believe modesty is important. Favourite fashion designer It used to be DKNY but now I like Michael Kors.

I HAVE NOT BEEN A PERSON WHO EXPECTS EVERYTHING TO BE ROSY. I HAVE EXPECTED THINGS TO BE HARD AND DIFFICULT SOMETIMES AND AT THE BACK OF MY MIND I ALWAYS MENTALLY PREPARE MYSELF FOR THAT SO I CAN HANDLE WHATEVER COMES MY WAY Favourite perfume, designer bag and shoes I like perfumes that are flowery, feminine and not too strong. I don’t have particular favourite but I like compact bags that can take everything I need to carry and I love comfortable shoes because I move around a lot. Mum’s advice that stuck with me over the years My mum always said ‘it is not because we don’t love you that we stop you from doing what you want but we just want you to learn that you don’t get everything you want in life. So when you are denied something you want, it won’t be too hard on you’, and this advice has helped me a lot. I have not been a person who expects everything to be rosy. I have expected things to be hard and difficult sometimes and at the back of my mind I always mentally prepare myself for that so I can handle whatever comes my way. My favourite quote “Your iman is not complete until you love for your brother what you love for yourself”. It is a hadith from the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W). Favourite weather, sport and colour I love the rainy season because it lifts my spirit. I have boys and they watch football so it has grown on me too even though I do not know much about it and my favourite colour is lilac. Favourite day of the week My favourite day of the week is Saturday because it is the day I get to relax at home and feel free. I get to do a lot of things that I don’t get to do within the week. Beauty routine I use powder and eyeliner with some light lip balm. For the body I use a lot of sweet smelling sprays. Life achievements I think having started Starfield College is one of my main big achievements that I can talk about. It was a dream and something that was planned for quite some time and seeing it in reality is a very big achievement. Also my children, my first child has graduated and he is working. My second daughter has graduated and is married with a child and my third is entering the university and the other two are in secondary school. I think those are big achievements for me as

a mother. I have also been married for 26 years and marriages are always shaky but I thank God we have been able to hold on. Role models My father is my role model. He is very calm and talks with wisdom. Looking back, what I would tell a younger me Not to waste so much time in chasing her aspiration to

become a doctor and get a doctorate degree. I would have done everything and finished it much earlier. Legacy I am training children and I would like to see the next generation to be God fearing, honest in all they are doing and be just and that is what I preach to the young ones whenever I get the chance.

ne major concern of everybody today, is how not to gain excess weight but to keep fit. In achieving this feat many have tolled towards the wrong direction, hence making mistakes in dieting. One of such many mistakes is skipping breakfast. Across the world, many dieticians have continuously highlighted the importance and essentials of taking breakfast. In fact having breakfast and losing weight loss are two lines that are inter twined. Asides breakfast being the most important meal of the day, here are other reasons why you shouldn’t skip it; - Eating breakfast helps reduce hunger in the day, which would deprive you from falling prey to junk food. It is important to note however that during weight loss you need not skip meals but eat healthy. - To kick start the day, you need all the energy you can gather. When you wake up, the body needs all

the essential nutrients that would aid active brain work, and boost all other organs to function properly. Skipping breakfast increases insulin response, leading to storage of fat and weight gain. - You don’t have to eat very heavy meals for breakfast, you can have a timetable to guide you in eating healthy meals for breakfast. This will go a long way to assist in dieting. A dietician can be of great help in choosing the right and healthy meals for breakfast. - During weight loss, what many complain of is the inability to eat what we love. But this can be changed, you can substitute soda drinks for pure fruit drinks. You can still eat healthy even with meals that you think are high in calories. A professional guide can help in this regard. With additional information from the internet

WHY SKIPPING A MEAL IS NOT WEIGHT LOSS

S

tarvation have repeatedly been said not to be weight loss, Starving would only lead to more damage than good. From the days in school, it was taught that our body needs a certain amount of nutrient daily, depriving your body from this nutrients will only cause harm. Starvation can lead to; 1. Weak immune: A good immune system leads to a healthy condition. Your immune system is what fight against diseases, and this is only possible with the input of food. When there is no sufficient supply of food to the body, the immune gets weak. 2. Muscle Loss: Starving

yourself can make your body act on its own, by using stored fat as a means to giving you energy. This could affect the body, hence leading in muscle loss. 3. Decreased Energy: Our body needs the right amount of energy to function daily. Not eating can make you slow in your productivity and output at activities. 4. Malnutrition: You need food to feel nourished, not giving your body the required nutrients or starving could make you malnourished, which could lead to other health issues, if not properly handled.

Dental hygiene for the milk teeth

I

t is crucial to take care of your baby’s milk teeth though they are all going to eventually fall out. If any loss or decay occurs to the milk teeth, it can affect development when the permanent teeth grow. Also, food and drinks can cause bacterial build up in the mouth. Introducing your child to early dental hygiene will ensure that the child maintains good dental hygiene in the future. - Once the first teeth appear, brush them with a soft-bristle toothbrush or wipe them with a piece of cotton wool after meals and especially before bed with kid’s toothpaste that has little fluoride content. This will help prevent the buildup of plaque and create healthier gum pads. - Also, take preventive measures

against the baby bottle mouth, a disease that can lead to the loss of primary teeth. This usually develops in babies who are put to bed with bottles of milk in their mouths. The sugar in these drinks combines with bacteria in the mouth to decay the teeth. Once the teeth come in, never put your baby to sleep with a bottle. If the baby must have a bedtime bottle to relax, fill it with plain water. - Now is a good time to include fruits in your baby’s diet. Cut up small pieces of fruit that your child can nibble on. Vitamins are very important for dental hygiene and prevention from vitamin deficiency that can cause bleeding gum and toothache too.

Ideals for men this season I

Idris Elba

by FEMI MOHAMMED

Mai Atafo named West Africa’s designer of the year by FEMI MOHAMMED Nigerian bespoke designer Mai Atafo has been named fashion designer of the year in the whole of West Africa at the 2016 edition of the Abryanz Style & Fashion Awards (ASFAs)”. The prestigious awards ceremony under the theme “Dress to Inspire” held on Friday evening at the Kampala Serena Hotel was by far the biggest fashion event to ever take place in Uganda. There were music performances from fast-rising Ugandan singer, Ceaserous, Kenyan diva Avril and singer Runtown from Nigeria. Among the people that attended the event were BBA Hotshots winner, Idris Sultan (the host), socialites Judith Heard, Bad Black’s ex-lover David Greenhalgh and his wife Miss Parker Dee, Herbert Shonga and his newly wedded wife Dorothy, Singers Bebe Cool and his wife Zuena Kirema, Jose Chameleone, Desire Luzinda, Voltage Music singers Kent and Flosso, fashionista Kim Swagga to mention but a few.

t’s that time of the year again. The year 2016 has zoomed past pretty fast and judging by the Christmas trees at almost every spot and departmental stores all around most parts of the world, we know it’s arguably the most exciting time of the year. While kids are getting all gooey about Santa Claus and gifts and ladies are attending more weddings than they have in the past couple of months, here are a few pointers as to what every gentleman should sustain through

the festivities: 1. Stay well-groomed: This involves working out to stay fit and shaving any excess beard as you don’t want to look like a scary bounty hunter when guests come visiting 2. Stock in the casuals: The end of the year is usually that time of the year set aside for parties. Whether it’s an office end of the year party or a beach party with friends, it undoubtedly calls for ditching those corporate wears for some casual hip outfits. Pay attention to the loafers, chinos

pants and maybe the cool bowler hats 3. Treat out your loved ones: This might be your girlfriend, wife, kids, nieces or nephews, you just have to make them feel lucky to have you and always look forward to spending the festive season with you 4. Get yourself a gift: Depends on your budget, rounding off the year with a souvenir for yourself doesn’t sound like a bad idea 5. Recharge your batteries: Getting as much rest as possible this season is more than ideal.
