It is served along with mayonnaise and mint sauces, most important sauce being the red chili sauce which goes into this dish. It’s very easy to prepare. Ingredients Boneless chicken breast 1 teaspoon of salt 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper powder 1/2 teaspoon of Ajinomoto (MSG) 1 teaspoon of sugar 1 seasoning of cube 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder 1 tablespoon of sesame oil 1/2 tablespoon of dark soy sauce

1/2 tablespoon of vinegar 150ml of water, (lukewarm) 1 Egg 1/2 cup of corn flour 1 Cup of all-purpose flour 5 green chillies 1 teaspoon of corn flour 1 onion (diced) 1 red bell pepper 1 yellow bell pepper Capsicum Directions

the boneless chicken breast pieces in a bowl and wash them thoroughly. Marinate the chicken by adding the ingredients mentioned, except the egg, corn flour and all-purpose flour. Leave for 15 minutes. Now to the marinated chicken pieces bowl, add egg, corn flour and all-purpose flour, mix well. Fry the chicken pieces in sesame oil at medium heat until they are 70 per cent cooked, keep the fried chicken pieces aside while the oil in the wok gets hot, add the chicken pieces to the hot sesame oil in the wok and cook them until they turn crispy. Remove excess sesame oil and only retain one ladle for preparing our Chili Chicken Recipe Sauce. When sesame oil is hot enough, add ginger and garlic paste, followed by onions, red and yellow bell peppers, capsicum, green chilies, and sauté` while the flame is high. Tips for a naturally fragrant home by HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU

W

alking into an aromatic and fragrant home is enchanting. Not only does it instantly lift your spirit, it leaves you in awe as well. Also, fragrances have a way of associating themselves with memories. This is why it is important to ensure that your home stays fragrant and fresh 24/7. There are a few tricks you can keep up your sleeves to ensure that your home remains fragrant and fresh all day, every day. Simmer over a stove: By simmering water with herbs and citrus, the steam from the infused water will spread the sweet scent wafting all round the house. Scent-filled jars: This is something you can do with the liquid from the simmering water. Simply put the liquid in a jar and add few more scenting ingredients that you wish and place strategically all around the house. Candles: Candles, even when not lighted; leave soft and delicate smell everywhere. But for a stronger effect, lighting them will give your home a hazy and delicious smell that just might have you dozing off as well. Bring the outside inside: Plants can clean the air for you and replace it with great fresh and natural smells. Keeping plants like jasmine, lavender, mint and roses can assist in uplifting and scenting your home greatly. Air vents: A very handy tip is ng to clip something er like a car freshener te or your favourite scent to a fan orr nt inside an AC vent so that when itt d blows, it will send fragranced airr and fill the wholee room with that dreamy smell.

HALIMA ADESUA SULEIMAN Educational background I attended both my primary school and secondary school in Jigawa state before going to Kano state University and finished up in Abuja. I did my masters in the United Kingdom and did a lot of courses including attending the Harvard Business School for my Managementcourses. I also did another Management course in 2016 also at Harvard on Leadership. Career I started in the banking sector. Then after leaving the banking sector, I started to pursue my passion of building a school. Building a school has always been a passion of mine. It’s something that I’ve always wanted to do. My role model was actually the late Maryam Babangida. Going to El-Amin then and seeing what she was doing made me really inspired. I had wanted to be like her, looking up to her, wanting to do something like her. So I talked to myself because I have this passion for kids, I love working with kids. They are beautiful souls I love to spend my time with. Why the Nigerian-Canadian College? I met a friend while flying to New York some time in 2008; she’s Canadian and an educationist. So we got taking and she was telling me how Canada has one of the best educational systems in the world. She was selling Canada to me and I was really intrigued. So she gave me an invite to Canada and I went to see what they were doing there. I then felt we could collaborate to do one or two things together. So coming back home, going through the whole Nigerian educational system, there was nothing to do with Canada. Most of our curriculums are either British or American. It was something new and fresh. Right there, it was an opportunity and a great idea for someone my age to do something like that.Investing in the educational sector in can be very difficult because you need huge capital before you go into it. So, when something little came my way, I invested in my school and here we are today. How long has the school been in existence? Two years now going to three. Challenges running the school So far the country, you can’t run a business smoothly in this country. Right now, you have to do almost everything on your own. You’re trying to contribute something of your own but unfortunately, there are so many things hindering that like, lack of electricity. You can’t run a business without adequate electricity. Last term, throughout we were on diesel because there was no light. It’s really bringing us down. Last year, some people couldn’t pay their kids school fees because of how bad the economy was but what can you do? You can’t chase the children back because you love them already. You do a lot of humanitarian activities. Can you tell us the story behind that? It’s just a passion. Like I said earlier on, I love kids, I love everything about children. I love what they stand for, their innocence, their purity, and their spirit. When Allah has decided to bless you beyondyour own imagination, when you look at where you’re coming from, you have no choice but to touch lives. This life is very short and you’re left with at the end of the day are your legacies. I want to make people happy. Growing up It was okay. After I lost my dad at a very young age, it was hard for my mum to raise seven kids on her own. I remember having to move back to the family house in Jigawa because my mum couldn’t do a lot of things for us. My dad had an accident and died. He was a customs officer. He was from a royal home but unfortunately, we thought things would happen for us just like that but we were left on our own. My mum had to do everything on her own. She was such a strong woman and I really appreciate her for that. But it was fun. I have a lot of great memories while growing up but it was difficult as well. Fond childhood memories To be honest, I miss myfriends. I miss playing with them. Sometimes I just pause and start smiling whenever I remember some of them. We were

I LOVE WORKING WITH KIDS. THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL SOULS I LOVE TO SPEND MY TIME WITH really naughty back then. Challenges (Personal) I have always been a lucky girl. But challenges always come. One would be losing someone close to me. But when life throws stuffat you, you have no choice but to find a way to move on at the end of the day. Life lessons Learning to trust people, because it’s difficult to trust someone. We humans can be crazy but we can learn to trust again, build a relationship and move on. Also learning to give others second chances. Aspirations growing up I had wanted to become so many things. I had wanted to become a doctor, I had wanted to become a lawyer, the next minute I would tell my mum something different but at the end of the day, things just work out on their own and here we are. Joys of motherhood

It is the most beautiful thing that has ever happened to me. It changed my life completely. It has changed the way I think and the way I handle things. I remember when I had my first child, it was the most beautiful moment in my life and everything just from that moment on turned around for me. How I met my husband We met through a mutual friend. It’s a funny story. A friend of mine had mistakenly called a number and the person was on her neck, disturbing her everyday. So one day we met at the salon and she said “Oh, Halima can you help me? Someone has been

So he called me and I asked who he was, he said he just finished talking to me and I was like, “No, you don’t just call any number and start harassing the person.” So he apologized, and gave the number to his friend telling him how rude I was and all that. So his friend called and I was saucy to him as well and he was like “How dare you?” and we exchanged harsh words. At the end of it, we both said we wanted to see each other to see who the person that had the guts to talk back to us(This was what we both had in mind). say, “When you work hard, you’ll get everything you want in life.” While growing up, I saw how hard she worked and I wanted to be like her too. She was a contractor so it was easy for me to pick up things and work the way she worked then. Favourite colour, car, sport and weather Red. Light skinned women really love red. I love Mercedes; it’s a bit masculine but I like it. I jog a lot. I used to be bigger than this. I did the keto diet and ate right with a lot of vegetables and green tea and it worked for me. I love our Nigerian weather during the summer time. Favourite day of the week Monday; because I have to go to work and you have to make things happen on Monday. People hate Mondays but honestly, I love Mondays. Role models My mother and the late Maryam Babangida because of her history and most of her stories, I could relate with her Looking back, what I would tell a younger me I will Just be me again because the me back then was fun and honestly, I wouldn’t change a thing. I would do it all over again the same way. Advice to women I would like to advice most especially the young Nigerian woman: I would give them the same advice my mother gave to me. Just work hard, be you and try to use your brain more than you use your body because believe me, you have more opportunities than the men if only you can use your brain more than you use your body. Mark Zukerberg used his brain, Bill Gates used his brain. Just think of something fantastic, put it out there and in a matter of time it will grow and thrive. If it was about using our bodies, most of the rich women out there would be those who used their bodies, but it’s not.

JUST WORK HARD, BE YOU AND TRY TO USE YOUR BRAIN MORE THAN YOU USE YOUR BODY BECAUSE BELIEVE ME, YOU HAVE MORE OPPORTUNITIES THAN THE MEN IF ONLY YOU CAN USE YOUR BRAIN MORE THAN YOU USE YOUR BODY.

Effective shaving techniques By HALIMA ABDULRAZAK B

I

t is very important to shave off unnecessary hair in the underarms and also on the face instead of leaving them to grow long and make you look tattered and older. As ladies, we need to take care of our skin and give it maximum protection and care. Proper miniaturisation is a vital first step when shaving. Never shave without first moistening dry hair with water, as dry hair is difficult to cut and breaks down the fine edge of a razor blade. A sharp blade is crucial to getting a close, comfortable, irritation-free shave. Shaving off hair from the legs Moisten skin with water for about three minutes and then apply a thick shaving gel. Water plumps up the hair, making it easier to cut, while the gel helps retain the moisture. Use long, even strokes without applying excessive pressure. Shave carefully over bony areas like ankles, shins and knees. For knees, bend slightly to pull the skin tight before shaving, as folded skin is difficult to shave. Stay warm to prevent goose bumps, as any irregularity in the skin surface can complicate shaving. Remember to shave in the direction of hair growth. Take your time and shave carefully

iti areas. F l over sensitive For a closer shave, carefully shave against the grain of hair growth. Underarm shaving Moisten skin and apply a thick shaving gel. Lift your arm up while shaving to pull skin tight. Shave from the bottom up, allowing the razor to glide over the skin. To minimise skin irritation, avoid shaving the same area more than once. Wire-wrapped blades, help prevent careless nicks and cuts. Don’t press too hard. Simply let the blade and handle do the work

Painful swollen fingers I am eight months pregnant and my fingers are swollen and painful. I had to remove my wedding ring. I have taken several drugs without relief. - Anonymous It is due to oedema: just like it occurs in the legs, so also in the hands. Unlike the legs, the hands do not have space for expansion due to fascia, which accounts for the pains. I recommend raising your hand and putting it on top of a pillow while sleeping. This will reduce the oedema.

Abnormal baby position I am about to deliver but my baby is said to be lying in a transverse position. My doctor said they must do operation. I consulted another doctor who said the same thing. I don’t want the operation. Can something else be done? – Laraba Transverse lie is an indication that there has to be abdominal delivery or Caesarean section (CS). Transverse lie can lead to rupture of the uterus. Labour can result in mortality for mother and baby. For well selected cases and in appropriate centres with facilities for emergency CS. External cephalic version can be attempted under ultrasound guidance and possibly stabilisation induction. I suggest you go for the operation as recommended by the doctors.

H E A LT H Y L I V I N G The implications of too much or too little Vitamin C by HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU

itamin C is one of the main building blocks of a healthy body because it plays a vital role in body development. It is a very powerful antioxidant with many beneficial properties such as anti-inflammation, skin and collagen formation, boosts immune system and overall, improves the performance of your body. But like everything, excess or deficiency in Vitamin C and have side effects. According to Dr. Seyi Adeosun of National Hospital, Abuja, too much of Vitamin C may cause: Gastrointestinal problems: Excessive consumption of Vitamin C can cause disturbances to your digestive track with symptoms like diarrhoea, vomiting and stomach upset. These in turn can lead to

f you. for Avoid applying deodorants or antiperspirants immediately after shaving as doing so can result in irritation and stinging. To prevent this, shave underarms at night and give the area time to stabilise before using deodorant. To prevent inflammation, let skin rest at least 30 minutes before you moisturise. And if you must moisturise immediately after shaving, select a cream formula rather than a lotion and avoid exfoliating moisturisers that may contain alpha hydroxyl acids.

d h d ti reduced d d blood bl d pressure dehydration, and imbalance to the mineral substances in your body. Kidney stones: High intake of Vitamin C is associated with the formation of kidney stones and it is also its main cause. When the excess Vitamin C is difficult to break down, it forms deposits in the kidney. Haemochromatosis: This is a condition caused by excess iron build up. It mostly affects the liver, heart and pancreas. When taken too much, Vitamin C can worsen

the condition even if it may not be the cause. On the other hand, too little of Vitamin C may cause: Slow healing: Vitamin C is the main collagen builder in your body, not to mention its property as an immune booster. So if you begin to notice that cuts and injuries take a long time to heal, you may need to review how much Vitamin C you consume. Inflamed and bleeding gums: Oral health issues associated with swollen, inflamed and bleeding gums are linked to low level of Vitamin C. It can also lead to gum disease and more serious problems if not addressed. Recurrent nosebleed: Nosebleed comes from capillaries that are in front of your nose. Lack of enough Vitamin C can increase how fragile the capillaries are and cause regular nosebleed. Weak immune system: The immune system in our bodies is responsible for fighting diseases and infections. Its strength relies greatly on Vitamin C. When there is a deficiency of it, the body’s immunity becomes very weak thereby making it prone to illnesses and infections. Therefore, taking enough and substantial amounts of Vitamin C is key to overall improved health. With additional information from the internet

My baby is five years old with a cough for more than four months. Antibiotics used include septrin, augmentin and erythromycin. We have used several cough syrups but the cough has persisted. We have been advised to use honey. – Mama Twins, Mararaba, Abuja I think the priority is assessment by a paediatrician. Any history of asthma in the family, is the child gaining weight? I suggest you stop antibiotics for now and do a thorough investigation, including CXR and gastric washout for AAFB. Kindly take the baby to a specialist.

Alternative family planning method I am 30 years old with four kids. I want to do family planning. I had used two monthly injections after the third child. Can I continue with it or do you have an alternative? - Anonymous At 30 years with four children, I advise a longacting contraceptive. This could be reversible or irreversible. The decision for irreversible contraceptive should not be taken lightly. It is for those who have completed their family size. This s is because after doing it, the possibility of natural conception is remote except by assisted conception therapy. Irreversible methods include bilateral tubal ligation for the woman (BTL), which could be done laparoscopically, or by minor open surgery on outpatient basis. For the men, it is vasectomy. There are reversible long acting contraceptives like implanon and intrauterine devices (IUDs). Occasional breakthrough bleeding may occur. Unless you want to have pregnancy soon, I advise you to consider the suggested ones above rather than the bimonthly.
