MADINA DAUDA NADABO // Background I was born on October 25, 1958 in Kaduna but my parents are from Lur in Kangke Local Government Area of Plateau State. My childhood experiences are what I will call the backbone of my resilience today. My family was a middle class one when I was growing up as a child. Way back in Unguwan Shanu Kaduna where I was born, my father used to take on me a bicycle to the Army Children School New Cantonment in 1966 shortly before the Biafran War. That war went on for 30 months. All that time, I was on and off school as the war persisted until my father decided to change my school in 1968 to LEA Unguwan Sarki which was closer home. I wouldn’t say I was a brilliant pupil but I can remember that when 20 girls were needed from my school in 1970 to sit for Common Entrance Exam to Secondary School, I was one of the lucky ones chosen from primary

me a place at the Federal Radio Corporation Kaduna (Now known as Radio Nigeria Kaduna National Station). I would say the job is quite fulfilling. There is a lot of glamour in it as you touch lives by informing, enlightening and educating your listener. The feedback I get gives me joy. There is also a lot of good will that goes with it as people who listen to you show you likeness and love any time you meet with them on the job or out of it. I count myself lucky and blessed to be in such a noble profession. Challenges and Achievements As a woman, I would always have challenges from my immediate environment which sometimes is unfriendly because of culture or religion and of course the men folk who think women should only be seen and not heard. The woman cannot go the full length of

I WANTED TO FIRST BE A POLICE WOMAN THEN AS I WAS GROWING OLDER, I ADMIRED NURSES AND WANTED TO BE ONE, BUT SOMEHOW FOR ME ALLAH IN HIS INFINITE MERCY HAD SOME BEAUTIFUL PLANS FOR ME. HERE I AM TODAY, A BROADCAST ADCAST JOURNALIST OF INTERNATIONAL REPUTE. UTE. mplete the number because we had six to complete only six girls in our Primary Seven class then. So I was admitted into form one at Our Lady’s ondary School Independence Way Girls Secondary Kaduna along with one of my class mates Hauwa Tijjani. CO V E R I N T E R V I E W journalism career without facing challenges from gender biased people that she comes across, they still think the world is for men only, but they are wrong, because we have proven to be equal to the task, sometimes we even do the job better. In real sense, we cannot do without each other in this profession, the men, whether they are our fathers, brothers, husbands or even platonic friends or colleagues, we need each other to succeed. There has never been a radio or television station without female workers, so also newspapers and magazines but in the dynamics of life and in this fast moving world of the computer and internet, where the world has become a global living room, things and people must change or you are left behind to wallow in self-pity. I personally did not allow that to happen to me. As for my achievements, I will not want to blow my own trumpet. My work speak for itself, the news presentations, the news reports and current affairs programmes that I have created and anchored in more than two decades of doing this job speak volumes. I have also had the rare privilege of being honoured by individuals, NGOs, CBOs and some educational institutions so much that it shows that I have paid my dues. Family Life My family life is demanding, loving, dramatic and pleasant. My husband and I work in the same industry. I am married to Alhaji Zakariya’u Yusuf Nadabo who is the General Manager of Globe FM Bauchi. We have a lot of trust in each other coupled with the mutual respect that we share. Communication is key and it is already simplified for us with the emergence of the new global information technology the GSM. If I need to stay out late, one phone call is enough to make him understand. We are blessed with five children Fatima, Hafsat, Khalifa, Sadeek and Mohammed Bello. The children have learnt to do the same. Role models I have several role models. My first role model is the late Hajiya Maryam Babangida, I Iiked her charisma and finesse. Hajiya Maryam Idris Othman is one of them. I admire her humility and devotion. Then the late Princess Diana of Wales, I adore her unique poise and

Then the ones that I would love to take after in my profession are Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf and Christiane Amanpour. Childhood Memories I will never forget how I was enrolled into school by One Mrs Theresa Ekawu, who happened to be our neighbor at Etsu Road Unguwan Rimi in 1964, when I was just six years old. That time you must be 7 years before you are enrolled into class one, or when your hand could cover your ear, that is if you cross the hand over your head. Unfortunately for me my hand could not cover my ear, but I showed passionate interest in going to school. The said Mrs Theresa Ekawu is from Cross Rivers State, she is Ogoja by tribe to be precise. She had two sons that were my play mates and she had already enrolled into school, any time they leave for school I stay at home lonely. Sometimes I will cry for wanting to follow them, so one day she just said to my Mum that she is taking me to the same school with her sons, my mother who was not educated trusted her, so she let me go. That was how I became one girl Child that was privileged to attend school from my family; I also paved way for my brothers and a sister who came after me. In my adulthood today, even though Mr and Mrs Sebastin Ekawu and my Parents are no more, but all of us the Children of this two families, four of us from my family’s side and six from the Ekawu’s are closely related till today. I call them my halfbrothers from the other mother. Aspirations as a Child I wanted to first be a Police woman then as I was growing older, I admired nurses and wanted to be one, unfortunately for me ALLAH in his infinite mercy had some beautiful plans for me. Here I am today, a broadcast journalist of International repute. Three Must Have Fashion Accessories I always have an ear ring a necklace and watch. Best Travel Destination My best travel destination is Saudi Arabia; first it is where I always have so much spiritual

inspiration that I won’t mind living there if given a choice. Favorite Food My favorite foods are Sinasir or tuwo Shinkafa with vegetable soup. I love peppered chicken too. For drinks, I love kunun gyada, Sharba milk and Wer Kas. Style Definition I love all shades of long gowns, wrapper and blouse and lafaya. My definition of style is that I go with what suits me, not necessarily what is in vogue but I love fashion. I can be very flamboyant some times and I love gold and costume jewelries too. I mix beautiful bright colours to complement my ebony coloured skin. Sometimes I follow the fashion trend in long house wife skirts and long gowns that I use as office wears made out of our local fabrics. Fashion Designer I don’t have one, I go where my fancy takes me in terms of fashion. Meeting Husband We met at the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria Kaduna National Station. We are broadcast journalists. Most Cherished Gift from Him One beautiful watch made of bronze that he gave me as a wedding gift. Joggling Career and Home Front I succeeded in combining work and family well because I make sure I plan the way things will play out. I do a lot of time calculation and try to stick to it so that I won’t be found wanting. When my children were young I was fortunate to be a shift worker and that helped a lot. If I am to be on a morning shift which starts at 8am, I will make sure that I cook my soup in the night before going to bed and preserve it in the fridge so when I wake at 5am, my breakfast and lunch will be ready at the same time. As I am dishing the breakfast, I will also be storing the lunch in my warmer. So that took care of feeding the family. By the time I return home after 3p.m I will have time to rest before the next meal time. Women are the best home managers you can ever find. ALLAH endowed us with a lot of strength, ingenuity, shock absorbers and talent to carry on with our lives but that can go smoothly only when the men do not interfere. Like he would want to change your cooking time or quantity by

inviting some of his friends to dinner, when you have that kind of situation then you will need help from him or another family member to be able to keep to your own time. Beauty Secrets My beauty therapy starts at night when I take a shower with our local black soap mixed with honey and camwood then follow it up with shea butter. I repeat the same thing again in the morning. I also dab loose powder on my face, wear a light red lip stick and apply khol on my eye lids to bring out the beauty of the eyes, then I am good to go. Changing the Hands of Time I wouldn’t want to change anything about my life. I am happy with it. You know why? It’s because I don’t carry over any thing, you can hardly find any dull moment in my life. Definition of Happiness My idea of happiness is that I don’t sleep with any body’s thought in my heart at all. I keep whatever problems outside the bedroom door; I may remember to pick some relevant ones that need attention the following day if ALLAH permits. So you find me sleeping like a baby, in fact I hardly remember my dreams. The ideal Woman She is the woman who is always there for her family, the woman who comports herself in public. The woman who is warm, tolerant and receptive could earn my respe respect any day. I like a woman that has carriage. Secret to Success I may not be able to tell you w why I am successful except of course to say it is the grace of Allah. It is the wish of Allah that I am whe where I am today. I am a fulfilled fulfilled woman Alhamdulilla Alhamdulillahi. Best Form of Relaxation I like games a lot. I used to play basketball, hockey, volleyball and table te tennis. I played basketball for Kaduna and Born Borno states in my hay days with my mates. I do exerc exercise at home now for lack of adequate time to go out. I also unwind by attending family get togeth together and parties, listening to music and even da dance in the privacy ar of my room when the need arises. Exciting Moments co My most exciting moments come from the feed backs I get from people. W When it is positive it spurs me on, when it is nega negative it gives me the opportunity to make amen amends. I welcome constructive criticisms or othe otherwise with an open mind without hard feelings. Legacy In my own little way I do philan philanthropy, I would want to be remembered as the woman who touched a life and who also lef left any one face with a smile when it was most needed. I am an unselfish person and eight out of ten times I try not to be found wanting but fo for the infallibility of a human being. I would wan want to rate myself high in this aspect. What else w would I want? Alhamdulillahi!

DO I HAVE TUBERCULOSIS OR WHAT? Well done sir for your good works, I’m an ardent reader of your column in Tambari. I was diagnosed with HIV in 2012 and put on the antiretroviral drug. I was always healthy all through till a strange pain in my chest started in 2014 and I was told it’s ulcer. I was admitted and treated but it grew

worse, I lost weight. I even had to do T.B test to be sure but it was negative. I haven’t been able to regain my weight and I usually have headaches, I have treated Malaria and typhoid, it gets better but it comes back again. I’m really worried because I always look ill! I’m 26 years old. Cyn from Abia.

What is your current CD4 count now? What of the viral load, have you done it recently? Are you under proper monitoring by experts? One possibility is drug resistance. There might be need to change the antiretroviral. Also sometimes starting treatment for tuberculosis in such dicey cases despite the negative test could lead therapeutic diagnosis of patient responded. Also check

your eating habit and ensure appropriate food at appropriate time. You need to go for to a proper HIV centre preferably in a teaching hospital or specialist hospital where multi-displinary approach can be used in the management. Drug resistant and possible change of combination of drug is high.

PROBLEM OF ITCHING Please what do I use to relieve the problem of vaginal itching with whitish discharge that look somehow like pus I have used my tone vaginal cream but to no avail. The itching persists. Please your immediate response is needed. Anonymous Most likely it is vaginal candidiasis. Go for high vaginal swab test (HVS) for microscopy, culture and sensitivity. You will need a combination of oral antifungal, vaginal pessary and cream. You can see a Gynaecology for examination and treatment. There may be need to treat mixed infections.

CHRONIC SINUSITIS FROM CHILDHOOD I am sixteen year old lady suffering from serious catarrh from childhood And I was told by my mum that I was born this way. Now it has affected my ear. Most of the time, my breath will seize even if I am standing. I have to sit down . I need your advice and help. Aisha, Jigawa. Chronic catarrh or chronic sinusitis is a common respiratory tract ailment. In America, it affects millions while it is also common in our own environment. Causes include allergic rhinitis, nasal polyps , structural defect in the nasal anatomy. Also conditions that can lead to immune deficiency leads to repeated infections. Some authorities divide into chronic rhinitis with polyps , chronic rhinitis without polyps and chronic rhino sinusitis with allergic fungal infection. Treatment of this type of your complaint has to be properly investigated by an ENT surgeon. The treatment. Will be tailored towards the cause . Removal of nasal polyps will cure the problem while improvement in immune system will reduce the risk of related nasal infection and thereby nasal congestion. In this particular one I think it is either a nasal polyps that is growing bigger or structural abnormality that is becoming worse. Surgical treatment is a likely solution. If you do not know an ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) surgeon, go to any teaching hospital close to your area and ask for ENT department, your problem will be addressed.

For Nigerians, especially those from the northern and western parts, the agbada is a trademark that goes a long way in portraying our culture. Every outfit has its own definition, as

many would agree with the maxim ‘dress the way you want to be addressed’. The agbada can be sewn with different fabrics like Ankara, lace, aso-oke and guinea brocade. It is worn best complemented with a cap. Don’t you think every man should grace his wardrobe with at least a pair? Yes, I think; exude your confidence with stylish agbadas.

MEEN MOILEE [FILLET OF FISH IN SAUCE] “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”. A very wise saying indeed. This boneless fish in sauce dish is one creamy delicacy you’ll love to love. Wakkis could try feeding you for a lifetime but we prefer to feed you for a day everyday! This is best served with a hot, steamy bowl of basmati rice. It’s a “Meen” dish for the fish lovers.

INGREDIENTS USED IN MAKING MEEN MOILEE

as a fattening agent due to its saturated fats. But it is also rich in fibre, which make you feel fuller for a longer time and when taken in moderation, can help to control weight.

COCONUT MILK: Coconut rice! Coconut & corn! Have you ever wondered what a coconut is classified as? The coconut can be a fruit, a nut, and a seed. Botanically speaking however, a coconut is a fibrous one-seeded drupe, also known as a dry drupe. To make coconut milk, the coconut flesh is finely grated and soaked in hot water. The soaked pieces are squeezed through cheesecloth (substitutes: Coffee filters, paper towels and linen dishcloths and the liquid collected is coconut milk.

ONIONS: In the Middle Ages, onions were said to be an acceptable form of currency, and was used to pay for rent, goods and services — and even as gifts! Sigh! If only we could still pay the rent with them. For those who uncontrollably sob when cutting onions, the reason is because cutting into an onion releases sulphuric acid, which reacts with the moisture in our eyes to create a tearful reaction. One way to avoid this unfortunate by-product of slicing onions is to cut them under running water, or while submerged in a basin of water. Try It!

Yes! It’s that easy! This process may be repeated once or twice to produce lighter coconut milk, as different consistencies are required for different recipes. The selenium found in coconut milk is an antioxidant, which relieves arthritis symptoms by controlling free radicals and decreasing the risk of joint inflammation. Coconut milk is often labelled

KANNY WOOD I RAN ERRANDS FOR OTHER ARTISTES TO GAIN RECOGNITION - MUJTABA H. MUHAMMAD MUJTABA H. MUHAMMAD //

Background was born in Tukuntawa quarters of Kano Municipal to a family of strict Islam adherents. I did my primary and secondary schools in Kano and proceeded to Aminu Kano School for Legal Studies where I studied English language. I am an actor, director and producer who has acted in few movies and directed many. In the course of my sojourn in the industry, I have gone through different rudiments of movie making techniques and I am happy that I have done that because I presently have a lot of movies to my credit.

I

Why the movie industry? Being in the movie industry has always been my childhood dream. Initially I wanted to be just an actor because I was oblivious of other aspects of movie production, what was visible to me then was just acting. As a teenager, I was protected by a lot of issues. My parents wanted me to be in school all through the day while I wanted to be elsewhere. During my JSS 1 days, my parents bought a motorcycle that I will be using to fund my education. Their intention was that I should be using it as a commercial motorcycle to earn some income. So, I became a part time Achaba rider; this gave me the opportunity I had always craved for to get close to the movie industry. That was how I became close to them; first as an errand boy and later to a full member of the industry where I was taught the rudiments of the trade. Did you face any resistance from your parents? Actually when it became apparent to my parents that I wanted to be an artist, they did not hide their reservations towards my chosen career. I tried to convince them but it actually took me time to succeed though they placed some conditions that I could only join the industry after completing my secondary education. After my secondary education, they gave in completely. However, on many occasions they have told me that they are grateful to God for allowing them let me join the movie industry.

by IBRAHIM MUSA GIGINYU

It is no longer a new thing in the Hausa movie industry to see young boys and girls making wave in the industry. Mujtaba Haruna Muhammed is a young actor, director and producer who ventured into the movie making business at a tender age. In this interview, he speaks on his successes and travails. Excerpts Amada among many. I also directed movies like Naji Na Gani, Yan Kwalliya, Da Kai Na Yarda, Batan Wata, Muguwar Rawa, Kafin Safiya, Tsiyar Nasara and many others. Did you face any challenges? Challenges are part of everybody’s life. Thank God I have faced mine and I am managing them effectively, I will always be grateful to colleagues such as Hayatudden Yakubu, Sani Indomi, Ali Risini and a lot of others for taking the trouble of putting me through without an iota of discrimination and this singular attitude accorded me the needed motivation that placed me where I am today. They have shown me what brotherly love is all about and also taught me to extend same as I climb the ladder to stardom. What are your wishes in the industry? I want to be a star with a difference, a star worth emulating and a star that will be part of the industry’s positive development. I wish to also end well as I have started well with everybody. For me, success is not measured by how much money one accumulates but by how well one lives his life and how many lives he is able to touch positively. Being single, will you marry an actress? Why not? In fact I will gladly do that because we are into the same business and perhaps she would understand me more than any other girl would. I strongly believe that I will be happier if I marry an actress.

What are some of the movies you have to your name? My first movie role was in the movie Alkhairi and then other roles followed such as Yan Kwalliya, Na Ji Na Gani, Mai

I WANT TO BE A STAR WITH A DIFFERENCE, A STAR WORTH EMULATING AND A STAR THAT WILL BE PART OF THE INDUSTRY’S POSITIVE DEVELOPMENT.

Easy tips to natural hair

3. All about Oils Natural hair tends to be drier due to the curl pattern so hot oil treatments once a week with a steamer will give hair softness and shine while locking in moisture.

Embracing your natural textured hair has never been easier because it takes a lot of time and patience but here are tips that will help out with a good start.

4. Enhance Your Texture Start by dampening hair with a leave-in conditioner, followed by a curl activator, making sure your hair is evenly covered. For a uniform look, try two-strand twists, Bantu knots or rods left overnight.

by MULIKATU MUKAILA 1. Getting Started: Kick chemicals to the curb, but first take inventory of what you want to achieve. Going natural is an emotional journey and can sometimes be a lengthy process. If the scalp has been compromised by chemical relaxers, it may affect the way the hair initially grows back.

2. Follow a good diet plan. Don’t overlook the importance of your diet. One key tip every natural girl should know: Internal moisture is just as important as external moisture. If you eat healthy foods, drink a lot of water and take good care of yourself, you’ll see results in the way your hair, skin and nails transform/turn out.

5. Condition with Care Carve out a day each week to create a ritual of deep conditioning your thirsty strands as properly conditioned hair allows for easy combing and styling, it prevents ripping while combing and increases the overall health of the hair.

air breakage is a barrier that will prevent your hair from growing or getting fuller. Your hair is actually growing all the time, but with damage in the way, your hair is breaking off at the same rate it is growing, which is why there will appear to be no growth progress.

You have to slow down the rate at which you do things that damage your hair. Reduce is the word of choice used because it is impossible to eliminate all damage. Your hair is damaged to some degree every time you wash it, detangle it, and even touch it. The key to this is to cut down on the manipulation of your hair.

DO YOU KNOW... THAT WHEN YOU TRIM THE TIPS OF YOUR HAIR REGULARLY, IT WILL GIVE ROOM FOR YOUR HAIR TO GROW LONGER AND HEALTHIER AUGUST 2, 2015 TAMBARI
