DIFFICULT TO DEFEACATE
I delivered two weeks ago, and I find it difficult to defeacate. My stool is usually hard and comes in pellets. Please what should I do. Kate, Karu Abuja. First are you taking adequate water? Also are you taking enough fruits. Try and take fresh fruits including vegetables. Fruits like oranges, banana and watermelon. If despite this you are not passing stool still then liquid paraffin might be needed. There are few cases in which intestinal obstruction is the cause. Surgically intervention is then necessary. Consult with your doctor if it persists.

PEARLS OF WISDOM “Style is not a size, it’s an attitude.” e.” - Marina Rinaldi
HADIZA YUSUF AGABI Educational background I started my primary education at Islamiyya Primary School in Jos, where I was born. But the last time I was in Jos they changed the school’s name to Islamiyya Pilot Science Primary School. I finished in 1981 before proceeding to Plateau College in Shiram, Plateau state but it was also changed to Yakubu Gowon College. I finished secondary school in 1987. I got two admission offers, one at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria and University of Jos but I ended up going to ABU where I did my SBS that year. Because I was not used to leaving home and I was always home sick, I had to transfer back to Jos, but they had already started the school year so I had to take remedials which I didn’t mind because I was coming back home. After my remedials in 1988, I was offered architecture in both institutions but the six year study duration had me scared. 1994 seemed very far then. So I decided to switch to Accounting. We were the 3rd set. I graduated in 1993 before going for my National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Warri, Delta state at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). Afterwards, I pursued my masters degree in Business Administration but specialized in Finance at Nassarawa State University in 2014. Now, I’m a student at the same university where I am now pursuing my MSc. in Forensic Accounting and Auditing. Apart from that, I am also a member of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) and a registered member of Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA). Career background After finishing my NYSC in 1994, I got a job with Heritage Press as an accountant, which is where my career as an accountant began. From there, I went to the Federal Capital Developmental Authority (FCDA) and became a civil servant. Then that same year, when the Ministry of Solid Minerals came to existence in 1996, I transferred there and it was around that time that I got married to my first husband. After we got married, he asked me to run our private business so I resigned as a civil servant and focused on our company, Northern Commodities Nigeria Limited (NOCOM) in Kaduna and we were producing yogurt, water and juice more popularly known as Sifa table water and the rest. I ran the business till he died in 2007. He was a member of the National Assembly, Dr. Aminu Safana. I then moved to Abuja. During that period factory was not well managed so I closed it down. Then in 2011, I was appointed as a member of the Nassarawa State Revenue Board. I was then somehow advised by the then governor that I am still quite young and have a lot of potential so I applied to the Federal Civil Service and I was appointed as Chief Auditor, level 14 at the office of the Auditor General for the Federation. Then in 2015, I was promoted to the Assistant Director at the Office of the Auditor General for the Federation. Growing up It was very interesting. My dad was a down to earth and humble man. Whenever he came home from work, he had this hobby of taking pictures. He would take us out and take us pictures in group so we had a lot of those. My mum was the disciplinarian, so she was the one who always did the punishing. Sometimes she would spank us so that we would take correction. We were normal family and a happy one. My dad was a civil servant who became the Auditor General of Plateau state. Challenges Well at home, I haven’t really faced any major challenges but my first major challenge was when I lost my first husband because that had a major impact in my life. For a few months, I was sick, I couldn’t sleep and developed insomnia but

But stuff like that happen and my son is doing just fine. At work, it is usually different. You have to be careful with your work and once you are, you won’t encounter anything.
Life lessons To be patient. I always advise people to be patient because when you scream and fight, you don’t get what you want. So I’ve realized that patience is key. Most rewarding part of my career The most rewarding part is seeing mistakes and making corrections and the person I correct takes the correction. My work is

Optimizing your home work space A By HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU
way for the nine to five working hours, working at home tends to be as productive too. But the manner and style in which you structure and set up your work space at home is crucial for maximum efficiency and success. Here are few things to bear in mind to fully optimize your home work space.
Define your workspace: Using an already existing room in your house means that it was used for something else before. Therefore, decluttering and rearranging is important. Place the desk away from direct sunlight, seclude the room from unwanted distractions or by
the street and also, why not paint the room in a more relaxing shade like white or sky blue? Make it comfortable: How you work and where you work are mutually exclusive. So just grabbing one of your dining room chairs won’t cut it. Choose a chair that will keep your posture vertical and your mind sharp and also a table with enough space and the right height too. Light it up: Natural light is key for a home office. Your home office should have at least a window from where some natural light can stream in. Also invest in some lamps for enough illumination so you can fully concentrate and see well in the dark without straining your eyes. Don’t pile it up: There is nothing more annoying than keeping a document nearby but having no idea where to find it due to the stacks on your desk. It is ideal to start with an empty desk and continue with the goal of keeping it as clear as possible. A cluttered desk is the beginning of stress. Stay organized: Keep order in your home office. A filing cabinet or shelf should be enough to keep your papers and books orderly and neat. As for your desktop, organize your documents, receipts, whatever it may be into files to keep your desktop neat and easy to navigate. Keep a plant: Growing a plant in your home office will lighten it up greatly. When you need a break, watering the plant can be therapeutic and relaxing for you and a way to pass away time.
Making your entryway more welcoming B By HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU
T
he entryway is the first place your guests get to make an impression of your home with. Whether that impression makes it or breaks it all depends on how you style your entryway. But don’t fret, as there are easy ways to make your entryway stylishly welcoming Family Photo Wall: Nothing makes a statement like a nicely framed family photo wall. Make it like a gallery to show your guests the lovely family you have in your home. Non-traditional seating: Instead of your basic entryway seats, think outside of the box by perhaps going for a bench, or retro chairs. This will liven up your entryway.
Geometric patterns: Cubes, pyramids and other interesting geometric patterns are popping up everywhere so you might as well throw some in your entryway too for a jazzed up and unique look. Display table: This serves as a focal point to your entryway. A nice eye catching one ought to do the trick. Also, why not pile a few sweets on the table too to keep those with sweet teeth busy. Florals: Whether it is actual, live fresh flowers or a floral design, it still helps uplift and wake up your entryway for all guests that come over. Brightly coloured ones are the best choice for that flair of boldness and colour. With additional information from the internet

The wrong mattress might be ruining your health Stories by UCHE EZE
A
good night’s sleep is very essential for your wellbeing. The quality of your sleep depends a lot on the quality of your mattress. Yes! You heard right. Your matress plays a vital role when it comes to your health. The importance of a good mattress to the health has been discussed widely, yet few people actually do something to improve their mattresses. An old mattress, or one that is not appropriate for your body type, can damage a lot more than your sleep. Tambari spoke to Dr. Ikechukwu Amadi of the Federal Medical Centre, Abuja on the effects of sleeping on a bad mattress, and here, he says, is how your mattress is ruining your health Increases stress level: Stress is caused by a lot of things, including a wrong mattress. Your mattress is directly related to your stress level, as the back pain you suffer from sleeping on an old mattress and the irritability linked to a poor sleep increases the levels of cortisol (a steroid hormone) in your body. Leads to back pain: Another common problem of sleeping on an old or wrong mattress is back pain. Your mattress can actually promote back pain and prevent you from getting a good night’s sleep. A good mattress should actually provide relief to back pain. Snoring: One of the factors overlooked when trying to decipher the cause of snoring is the mattress. If your mattress is not supporting your body properly, your airways may be under tension or the tissues may to be sunken, which leads
snoring. Mattresses take the shape of your body, which makes your airways to block easier. Although snoring is not uncommon, few people understand the dangers of snoring, which actually have the potential to be fatal. Lead to a weak immune system: Sleeping on an old mattress prevents you from getting a high quality sleep, which weakens your immune system. This is how you will become more prone to colds, as well as other types of illnesses, even severe ones. Memory impairment: Another side effect of a bad mattress is memory impairment. If you start suffering from poor memory, it could be due to your poor sleep, which, in turn, is due to your poor mattress. During deep sleep, your brain takes past information and transforms them to memories, if you do not get quality sleep, your brain is not going to form the memories the right way, which leads to memory impairment. Why you shouldn’t hold in urine
S
ometimes there’s no restroom in sight, or you’re not just comfortable using public restrooms and so you decide to hold in urine as long as you can. Doing this once or twice is not really an issue, but doing it frequently is causing more damage than you bargained for. When the bladder becomes full it sends a signal to the brain,
prompting us to urinate. When we ignore that signal it disrupts the excretion process. Your pelvic floor weakens: The pelvic floor is the organ that allows you hold in urine and it contracts accordingly to hold in urine. According to Dr. Miriam Oreouwa a Gynecologist, if you frequently hold in your urine, this ability to contract can get weaker over time, increasing the risk of leaks; for women, the leaks become worse after childbirth. You experience pain: Not only will it become painful to hold in your urine, but even after you ease yourself, you still feel the discomfort after a while. This is because the muscles in the lower abdomen are unable to relax. For some, this pain may be temporary, but for others it may last for days. Your bladder can become stretched out: Your bladder is a muscle and like any other muscle it can become stretched out and worn out. Frequently holding in your urine can make your bladder overextended and weak. When this occurs, the signals from the bladder to the brain are cut, and this is very dangerous. You are prone to kidney stones: People who are prone to be diagnosed with kidney stones are those who frequently hold in urine. Kidney stones are tiny “stones” that form in the kidneys from excess sodium or calcium, and if they are not regularly expelled via urine, these stones will try to leave the body via the urinary tract. This is extremely painful. With additional information from the internet

KIDDIES MORALS A guide to teaching the kids good posture with EMMANUELLA AKWAYA
P
osture is the arrangement of the body parts in a good position. Good posture simply depicts sitting, standing in the right position to ensure that the body functions properly. Good postures are essential for kids to save the vertebrae from deteriorating over time. When sitting, children should keep their heads straight; they should avoid titling up or down. Shoulders should be kept backwards and relaxed. They should not seat with their back straight or work with their arm without support. The knees should be slightly lower than the hips. The feet should be flat on the floor, avoid crossing your legs above your knees or tucking them under the chair. When standing, the shoulders should be relaxed back and straight, the body should be positioned straight. The knees should be slightly bent to ease pressure on the hips. They should avoid sticking their chest out and stand in the same position for a long period of time. When walking they should start by hitting their heel first then move to the toe. The
stomach area and buttocks should align in the same position with the rest of the body. Looking down should be avoided When running the head should be raised upright and straight. The arms and elbow should be kept at a 90-degree angle. Start with hitting the ground with the midpoint of their foot then the toe follows, lift the knee high. After running, they should always bend to rest on their knees to ease tension and allow normal flow of blood. When sleeping, they should stretch before bed time to ease tense muscles, and sleep with a pillow to minimize spinal curves. They should sleep on their side with a pillow in between the legs on their back and under the knees for better support. They shouldn’t sleep on their stomach side as that can cause pressure on the cervical spine. Always go for soft pillows. Parents should help their children to learn and adapt to these good postures to ensure a better, healthy body working system.

ith everyone going natural, it is important that you join the trend, as cosmetic products are not as effective as natural ones. Instead of spending hours at the beauty store trying to find the right beauty product for your skin, how about you grow your own beauty garden. There are various plants and herbs that sooth the skin and moisturize it and you’ll be doing yourself some good to grow them in the comfort of your home. Here are a few of those plants that can survive the Nigerian climate: Calendula: Extracts from the golden petals of this flower soothe the skin, reduce inflammation, and heal burns, sunburns, acne, eczema, and skin abrasions. Mixing the extraction from this plant with coconut oil makes for great natural balms, creams, lotions, toners, and rinses. Aloe Vera: The gel inside its leaves can be used to calm and repair skin damaged by sun and heat as well as reduce inflammation. Aloe can also be used as an oil-free moisturizer for dry skin. Aloe can be used on its own but also in creams and lotions. Lavender: An ointment made from the leaves is soothing, healing and can be used to treat acne. The leaves and flowers of this plant also have powerful anti-inflammatory properties, so extracts from these parts can be used as a toner or in creams and lotions.
Rosemary: An extract of Rosemary leaves can be used as an aromatic astringent for all skin types. It also helps in promoting healing by stimulating blood flow to the skin. Use an oil or water extract of this herb in making massage oils, toners, creams, hair rinses, balms, and lotions.
