GET THE ROYAL FEEL WITH EMPIRE DRESSES by MULIKATU MUKAILA

F

ashion has gone beyond expectations as it has made its way into the world of royalty by getting it right with an Empire dress. A very vital and unique style in nature, the Empire dress is a simple but flamboyant dress that

has a cape behind either on thee shoulder or the waist which is the significance of the main style. The cape is what brings out the whole statement of the dress as it makes you look like a queen in her royal regalia. Rock in style as you step out in your empire dress.

AMB. HADIZA MUSTAPHA // Educational background I was born and bred in Jimeta-Yola, Adamawa State. I attended both primary and secondary schools in Jimeta and Yola respectively. I obtained my first degree in Political Science from the Bayero University, Kano in 1981. I am a fellow of the National War College, Course 14. I have a master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the University of Ibadan. I was also a participant of the Harvard Senior Executive Education in National and International Security in 2007. I hold several diplomas in Diplomacy, Speech Writing, as well as certificates in Negotiation and Information Communications Technologies (ICTs), among others. Experiences and knowledge that bolstered my way forward I am a last born; and this is a great advantage, not for the usual reasons adduced to it - being your parents’ favourite - but because as a last child you have a lot of lessons to learn from your siblings: their successes and mistakes, what to do and what not to do. There is also the fact that, as a female child growing up among six older ones and coming after three boys, you learn to be strong and defend yourself or you become a non-person. Those are early character forming experiences that have helped me a lot. Concerning personality traits, I discovered that the nickname given to me at work is “Iron Lady.” I think it is largely positive. It means that one tries to adhere to certain values, especially work ethics, and that has to do with discipline. I hope also that it is a description or testimony of one’s quality of work. In summary, I would say that I value hard work and I work hard at everything I do. I like to succeed in both my private life and career. I always want to make a positive difference. Career choice I had initially set out to become a medical doctor, so throughout my secondary school I read what we used to call pure sciences. But on getting to the university I was introduced to power politics mostly how the big powers do and take whatever they want. I became fascinated by this and decided to study the intricacies of international politics and seek a career in the Foreign Service. Mark you, at that age and with the high nationalistic fever of university life, the odds were heavily weighed against becoming a doctor then. Plus, societal pressures about how long it took to train as a medical doctor, you did not want to push your luck with your family accepting to allow you remain in school and unmarried. Therefore, I read Political Science with specialisation in International Relations. During my national youth service programme, when other corps members were applying to serve in many ministries so as to brighten their chances, I applied only in the Ministry of External Affairs as it was called then. My friends advised that I should apply in more places, but I refused, not because I was being arrogant as they thought, but because honestly, I did not think of anywhere else to work. On getting to the Foreign Service at the time I did in 1982, we were very lucky to have larger-thanlife role models; people like the late Ambassador George Dove-Edwin. They not only took pride in the service, they were willing to teach new entrants the ropes. You were quickly confronted with the choice of either excelling or merely going through the ranks and being in the backrooms of Nigeria’s diplomacy. Secondly, because all the role models were males, the few female officers (I think we were only four in my set), had to work extra hard to make their mark. My success story I was very fortunate to have had such a wonderful

My private life, beginning with Expertise developed to my marriage and bringing up achieve my goals in life This is a very important question! I strongly believe that success is never by accident. You have to plan and develop the right skills and attitude to achieve your goals, otherwise even the best education may not necessarily bring you success. Self-description I describe myself as a self-made person. Challenges faced as a female ambassador First, let me state that as an ambassador you are the top diplomat of your country abroad and you carry the weight of your country and not so much your own personal weight or gender. By virtue of Nigeria’s status in the continent and active diplomatic engagements globally, Nigerian ambassadors, wherever they are posted, would always command the attention and respect of their peers, the host authorities and community. You would be failing in your duties if you were ever to make it about yourself. Admittedly, a large part of your job as ambassador is building interpersonal relationships, and there is no escaping some nuances and gender-based biases when you are dealing with some people and situations. However, on the whole, one is adequately prepared after more than 30 years of service, training and the skills you have acquired on the job, to rise above all challenges thrown your way. Perhaps, I can share some awkward moments that female ambassadors are likely to confront from time to time. This has to do with entertainment. When entertaining guests at either the residence or restaurant, it is necessary to be abundantly clear and be properly understood that the invitation for lunch or dinner is for business and without any strings attached. There are also some awkward moments in restaurants. After meals most men, especially African men, find it strange that you as a lady, regardless of the fact that you are an ambassador, should pay the bills. What I personally do is to make sure my office deposits money in advance, that way I do not embarrass my guests. TAMBARI SEPTEMBER 13, 2015

CO V E R I N T E R V I E W // AMB. HADIZA MUSTAPHA Female ambassadors may find it difficult to operate in certain climes where there are certain restrictions regarding ladies holding leadership positions due to religious and or cultural reasons. Recently, while on consular tour to visit Nigerians in Cameroon, I witnessed this first hand. As the guest of honour at the gathering of mostly Nigerians from the South-East of Nigeria I was supposed to break the ceremonial cola-nuts. I noticed that some heated arguments were going on at the back of the hall, and I asked what was going on. A very uncomfortable elder told me that some of the people were against me breaking the cola-nuts because in Igbo culture, ladies are not allowed to do so. I immediately took the microphone and nominated one of the elders to break the cola-nuts and peace was restored.

Favourite movie I love movies and I watch mostly thrillers, series, documentaries and travel, as well as national geographic channels. Favourite fashion designer I dress mostly in Nigerian attires. I am not a fashion trend follower. I prefer understated fashion designs. I make my cloths like most ladies in Nigeria from now over-priced tailors in Nigeria. My favourite foreign fashion designers are Christian Dior and St. Johns for Western cloths.

Favourite perfume I love perfumes. I tend to like the French fragrances and the Arabian Ouds and oils.

Aspirations growing up I have always wanted to change the lives of people and make a difference in the society through my work. I thought that being a medical doctor would give me an opportunity to cure people, especially the poor and the destitute. Alas, on getting to the university I changed my mind and took the next best thing that would give me that satisfaction, which was to work to promote the interest of Nigeria abroad. I am very grateful to God and my country for the opportunity to serve the country as its envoy in a strategic neighboring country at this crucial moment in our bilateral relations. I must say that I have thoroughly enjoyed myself through my long and active career. I have had some remarkable experiences, been to some wonderful places and met great and exciting people. Combining the home front and profession It was not easy at the beginning, especially when I started work in Lagos in the early 80s and when I got married. It was a constant battle to make sure that one balances the two responsibilities well and not to be found wanting. I insisted on cooking dinners almost every day, but most certainly, lunch and dinner every weekend. When I had my daughter, it became something of a psychological torment to leave her in the morning to go to work. You simply became better at juggling with time and experience. It is a lot easier now that my daughter is a woman of her own. I am looking forward to boring my grandchildren with stories from my past escapades.

occasional badminton and a couple of kilometers on the treadmill.

Best travel destination I do not have a favourite destination. There are different things I like about different places I have been. For instance, I love the mystic of Asia. Some of the scenic views fit my imagination of what paradise would be like. I like Europe because of its old buildings, history and art. South Africa has some of the best cloud formations I have ever seen. I was fascinated by the Alps in Marrakesh, Morocco. I love long distance driving in Nigeria during the rainy season when it is so fresh and the grass is green and lush. However, for entertainment, relaxation and shopping, I like to travel to the US.

favourite times were the evenings. My aunties and one of my older brothers, Ali (may his gentle soul rest in peace), would tell me stories, tatsunia in Hausa, for hours. He was particularly gifted. He knew all the stories in the Arabian Nights by heart, and he told it so well that all the characters: the kings and queens, princes and princesses, as well as fairies and the inevitable scary monsters, were so vivid that sometimes I would have nightmares. My mother would then ban any more storytelling, but we would hide behind our thatched houses to listen to him. I also used to look forward to travelling to Kaduna with my mother during the holidays to visit relatives. It was our London, being the only one always left at home with all my older brothers away at boarding schools and my older sisters all married, it was a good chance to meet children my own age. I remember that I climbed my first tree in Kaduna and got my first thorough beating together with my uncle’s children for it. Favourite sport I used to play netball and later, basketball, volleyball and badminton in primary and secondary schools and the university. Nowadays, I can only manage

Life lessons The best thing that worked for me in the early years was selftutoring and self-development. You have to continue where the formal education stops. I saw the benefit of that during my university and NYSC days. I was forced to conquer my shyness and lingering inferiority complex by contesting and winning a student union post and by choosing to do my NYSC in Ibadan; way out of my comfort zone. You cannot go anywhere far in your career without the ability to present yourself well, articulate and express your point of view to others in private or in public effectively. Above all, I found out that once I knew a topic well I am able to speak or write about it with more confidence, so I took up reading, writing and public speaking very seriously. I learnt to also be meticulous and prepare well for my meetings, events and negotiations, which is a pillar of my profession. I know that I annoy my staff members because they think I over prepare for everything. However, I believe they are always grateful afterwards when we do well. Lastly, have zero expectations of rewards and give selfless service for the sake of God and country. This is crucial because what I have found is that people can easily compliment you on a nice dress you are wearing but find it difficult to acknowledge your good leadership qualities. Know that leadership is a thankless job.

He will need to be assessed, it is either hormonal imbalance or genetic abnormalities . In reality, there could be genetically female who are phenotypically male. In this situation chromosomal analysis will be necessary. Management will depend on the cause if it is isolated hormonal abnormal stimulation. Hormonal manipulation and surgical correction will suffice. In case of genetic problem it has to be a multidisciplinary approach including a gynecologist, surgeon, urologist, psychologist among others. I will suggest he will go to surgical unit in a specialist hospital preferably a teaching hospital for proper assessment.

Hypospadia is abnormal location of urethral meatus apart from the terminal part of the male organ. In coronal hypospadias it is located at the lower part of the penile gland. It affects about one in every 250 male child born. It could be repaired between 6 to 12 months. This will help the child not to remember the procedure but it could be done later just like in your case. Since it has been repaired and the expert has given you assurance then there is no need to worry. Furthermore you have seen a urologist who has given you assurance after investigation. I will advice you to go ahead and marry. You even do have wet dreams. A lot of times we allow fear over nothing to stop us from making progress. Go ahead and get a wife if there is any challenge which I doubt then it could be addressed. TAMBARI SEPTEMBER 13, 2015

with honey, ghee and milk everyday increases vitality and libido. For pregnant and lactating mothers it improves digestion and mitigates constipation whilst pregnant. After pregnancy it possesses internal healing properties and improves milk production and blood circulation in nursing mothers. Please note that as the wise saying goes “Too Much of Everything is bad”. Over consumption of ajowan seeds may cause nausea, vomiting or gastric ulcers. The seed are small enough to get stuck inside dental cavities and it gets difficult to remove.

The existence of fish dates back as far as the Biblical days. Jesus was said to feed 5000 with only five loaves of bread and two fish (Matthew 14:13-21). Over the years it has played a significant role in the society. It is a good source of protein and is always among the top 5 recommendations when implementing a healthier lifestyle. It is very rich in omega -3 which is essential for enhancing energy levels and concentration. Preparation time is much quicker than other dishes. Here at Wakkis, we know we can feed 5000 with our delicious Ajwani Fish Tikka served with fresh Nan bread.

AJWANI FISH TIKKA INGREDIENTS & SPICES USED TO MARINATE AJWANI FISH TIKKA LEMON JUICE: Apart from being a cheap and effective antiseptic, the effectiveness of lemons for everyday use is very common around the world. Having half a glass mixed with water everyday helps prevent kidney stones in the long run. Having half a glass of lemon juice also speeds up your metabolism making you feel hungry in-between meals. The zest of the lemon is used as an additional ingredient when cooking or roasting and it is also used as an infusion in drinks or garnish for cocktails. Bartenders lightly burn the zest to lightly caramelize the oils and subtly enhance the flavour of the cocktail (might also allow for more tips when you make enough heads turn). The distinctive smell of the zest

RED CHILLI POWDER: These are chilli peppers which have been sundried and then blended to powder form. The first thing that grabs your attention is the unique colour of the chilli compared to the famous “yaji” used for suya in Nigeria. The redness would alter the appearance of any dish. The amount of iron in chilli powder leads to increased haemoglobin production and increases blood flow allowing for delivery of sufficient amounts of oxygen and iron in the brain which help improve cognitive performance. It is also a very important ingredient in defensive sprays i.e. pepper sprays as this becomes very irritating when it comes in contact with the eyes giving the victim enough time to flee to safety. The fish is carefully butchered to perfection and marinated in all these spices and then grilled inside the Tandoor. The best combination as mentioned earlier would be a side of butter or garlic Nan Bread if you are really feeling frisky. This meal alone satisfies your 3 course meal plan (economical) and is very pocket-friendly. I can’t think of a reason why you won’t indulge!!!!

allows for constant freshness that lingers for hours on end. Over the years it was believed that lemon juice would dissolve a fish bone if it was accidently swallowed. Before you run off drinking gallons of lemon juice, sucking on a lemon causes the throat muscles to contort, helping to dislodge any stuck bone. This is also the reason why most fish dishes come with a slice of lemon. Most of our dishes at Wakkis are deboned for your convenience except maybe our Sole Fish which requires finesse during consumption. AJOWAN SEED: Ajowan seeds is also known as Ajwain seed or Carom. Did you know that this seed leads to greater sexual virility and higher libido in both male and female by acting on the hormones responsible for sex drive. KAMU //

C U LT U R E

Kamu: A culture with pride and significance by JAMILA ILIYASU & ZULEI MOHAMMED

K

amu is a traditional form of entertainment during wedding ceremonies. It is mostly done in the northern part of Nigeria usually before the wedding proper. Kamu’ which means ‘catching of the bride’ begins when friends and family of the bride prevent the groom’s family from seeing the bride not until they have paid some required token. The bride’s face is usually covered with a veil while her female friends and relatives haggle with the groom’s family for an amount they should pay before they would be allowed to see her face. After the amount has been agreed upon and paid to the bride’s representatives, though not without a lot of pampering and pleading, the bride’s veil is opened and perfume sprayed on her. Sometimes, the friends of the bride can place her in the midst of covered up fake brides and the process of Kamu begins. Who is the right bride among all the covered ladies? It may be simple for the groom to make her out if he really knows his lady but this day, he may be clueless, but when his

family is finally able to identify their bride, she is all theirs and they would spray her with perfumes and off they take her for a dance. There is usually a lot of jubilation and celebration when the bride is finally ‘captured’ by her in-laws after allowing her friends to give them a little run for their money. The uniqueness of inlaws can be seen in the way they handle their bride during kamu. The beauty of kamu is not in the amount of money paid before the bride is seen but in the exotic culture that makes tradition breathtaking and suspenseful. The bride is adorned with henna decoration, which marks the beginning of her journey to bride hood. She is dressed in a gorgeous outfit and made to sit in a well decorated tent. A lot of things are involved in the setting of wedding ceremonies in the northern part of Nigeria but it is usually said that a wedding cannot be complete without kamu. It is a culture with pride and significance.
