2 Hello Readers,

T

here’s never a dull moment in fashion; things just keep getting better as new ones keep emerging. There’s always something new to add to your fashion and beauty needs and you don’t have to break the bank to achieve your goals. Easy DIY tips always come in handy whenever you need a quick fix or simply want something that works without you having to pay with an arm and a leg. Right inside your kitchen, you can pick a few edible ingredients and turn them into beauty products. The result can be as dramatic as your visit to a beauty parlour, as these ingredients are considered to be safe enough and also chemical-free. So, go ahead and treat yourself not only to a great meal, but a pampering of beauty right in your kitchen. Do women ever get satisfied with acquiring new things? This answer is better imagined. The slightest excuse makes it a reason to acquire a new thing. You might be surprised that these things end up being burdens to their owners, filling space either in boxes or wardrobes. It makes sense to only buy what you need and discard all that has been causing you unnecessary burden. If you’ve already sorted yourself out by identifying only what you truly need, then you have conquered the monster that makes us pile-up things that we might never use. So, as we get close to the end of the year, you should take time to reflect on yourself and do a wardrobe check to let go of the things that you don’t really need. Our featured personality is Hajiya Binta Mu’azu. Hope you enjoy the package Have a great week.

GROWING UP AS A CHILD

I can be very outspoken and sensitive. I like good things, so during my childhood days with my peer group, whenever we were discussing anything good, my voice was always the loudest. We loved going for picnics, but my parents were very strict and sometimes we wouldn’t know how to approach them to inform them we wanted to go out for a picnic. Still, we are lucky to have understanding parents. In fact, if my mother was educated, she would have been in a similar position I am today. I took after her because she has so much compassion in her, and loves her children and grandchildren so passionately. She also loves to satisfy everyone around her.

MY CHILDHOOD DREAMS

My dream career was to become a leader someday, because I was a prefect in my school days. Most of all the leadership qualities I possess now have been with me

“Life’s experiences have given me strength and courage, as well as contentment.” from my young age. Even when I was at the Polytechnic, I used to be nominated to head a function or event. It has always been in me, and that is why I want to impact on people’s life positively.

HOW I BEGAN CONTESTING IN POLITICS

It wasn’t my intention to go into politics, but people around me saw the potentials in me, because I love seeing people around me happy. I also love sharing wisdom that Allah has blessed me with. In 2011, my husband, friends and the people around me convinced me to contest for a position and that was how I contested for a House of Representatives seat in my Kaduna North constituency. I held many positions in the course of merging of parties to form the APC and today I thank God for the level I

COVER INTER VIE W have achieved politically. I believe in women playing politics with integrity and sincerity of purpose. In those days, women were just being used without considering what they were actually capable of achieving. My coming into politics in Kaduna state is like an eye-opener to women in politics and has made them realise they can practise on the same political level with men.

MOTHERHOOD EXPERIENCE

It is a wonderful thing to be a mother, but it is not easy combining motherhood with business, politics and official work. Motherhood is really a task, but with God, Alhamdullillah, I have been able to cope with all. There was this unexplainable joy I had in me when I gave birth to my first child and, among my siblings I was the first to give a grand-child to my parents, so it was love and affection all through. Everybody wanted to please me; every member of my family made sure she played a role in bringing up the baby. Today, the boy is now a man of his own, and I am happy to say that Allah has also blessed him with three cute children; Fatima is 6 years old, Ahmed 3 and baby Amira just 6 months.

people and follows Islamic injunctions. I am above 50 years old but she still takes good care of me. I love her so much; may Allah continue to bless her abundantly.

PART OF ME I TOOK AFTER HER

I also love to please people around me, but I am still unable to do even 50% of what she does.

ROLE MODEL

My dear mother is my role model because she loves to please everyone around her. In fact, I have never seen any other human being who is more pleasantly accommodating. It doesn’t have to be her children, relations, neighbours or someone she already knows somewhere. There was a time we took her away from her old home to take care of her because she wasn’t feeling too well and had to take her to India for treatment. Till date, we have not taken her back home and the house appears desolate as if no one lives there any longer. Yet, my siblings who are married are living with their families in that house; our mother’s absence there is that loud. My sisters-in-law keep asking and phoning when we would be bringing mama back to the house. The place is like a ghost house without mama. My mother is my mentor because she believes in hard work and is always advising one to strive hard to achieve perfection in whatever one does so long it would be beneficial to

We have an uncle called Wazirin Jama’a (literally meaning A Man of the People) and, therefore, whenever mama wants us to do something benevolent for someone, we will jokingly address her as “Mummy Mai Jamaa”. She is a loving mother, indeed.

LESSONS OF LIFE

I have experienced a lot. I have experienced the good, the bad and the ugly sides of life, but I thank the Almighty Allah for giving me the wisdom to be able to handle

things. Life’s experiences have given me strength and courage, as well as contentment. Life is full of struggles, hustles, disappointments, malice, mischief and cheats, but if you hold unto God almighty and your heart is clean, you can scale through. I don’t want to go into details of my life’s experiences but I thank God for everything.

MY DAILY ROUTINE

When I wake up in the morning, I will first of all say my prayers and meditate over the Quran. After that, I go back to bed, sleep for about two hours and thereafter, my day practically starts with breakfast and watching TV, with attention to news headlines. I also go through

the dailies and then then internet. After that, I go out for my business. On returning home, I say my prayers and return to bed. On weekends, I try to take care of myself, doing things like visiting the saloon or a spa.

BEAUTY ROUTINE

I am a very natural person; I do everything myself. I don’t go for any sort of make-up when I am going out for a function as I like to look natural. I visit the spa once in two months, but because I want to avoid stress I make sure I do massages every month.

DEFINITION OF FASHION STYLE

I love to wear the boubou style because I think it is the decent

thing for my age. I also love pink, orange and brown colours as they tend to suit me well.

MY JOYOUS MOMENT

When there is peace around me and when I am able to touch the life of someone who is in need, I find joy in me. I am joyous when I see a tearful face turn to smiles.

ADVICE TO FEMALE POLITICIANS

My advice to my fellow female politicians is to be determined and focused, to do politics with sincerity of purpose and dignity, and to also have the fear of Allah in them.

“Life is full of struggles, hustles, disappointments, malice, mischief and cheats, but if you hold unto God almighty and your heart is clean, you can scale through.”

ANAEMIA IN PREGNANCY I am six months pregnant and was told I am anaemic and would need blood, but I don’t want blood transfusion, so what do I do? Amina Katsina Anaemia is when the PCV (packed cell volume) in a pregnant women is less than 33%. In our own environment, research has shown that PCV of 30% is still normal. Therefore, any woman who has PCV below 30% is anaemic. Causes include the increase demand during pregnancy, untreated fever like malaria, septicaemia, high hookworm infestation and dietary imbalance. One pertinent question: what is your genotype? In case the genotype is HbSS, you have to know your stable PCV. In case you are not a sickler, your clinical state will also help to determine whether the blood transfusion is absolutely necessary or could be managed conservatively. Since I am not there, your physician is in the best position to determine this. Part of the conservative management include double dose haematinics plus or minus injectable or parenteral iron. Ascorbic acid or Vit C is usually added for improved absorption of iron. The role of diet cannot be over-emphasized, especially vegetables like ‘ugwu’ leaves

KANNY WOOD

Why I joined politics -BMB

T

he name Bello Muhammad Bello has gradually become synonymous with modern Hausa movie production. General BMB, as he is popularly called, has proven to be a strong pillar to contend with in the movie industry. The Kannywood actor recently joined politics and is contesting for a seat in the National Assembly. In this interview, Bello talks about his reasons for joining politics and many more

Your posters are being seen all over Jos North campaigning for support in the coming elections. Would you confirm you have ventured into politics and that you are vying for a position? Yes, I am in politics, contesting for the Bassa\ Jos-North Federal Constituency seat in Plateau state on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). I wanted to correct the impression that one’s success in politics doesn’t rely on the party he or she belongs to. Credibility and confidence coupled with good manifestos are what will endear a candidate to the electorate.

You are apparently doing well in the movie industry, so what must have inspired you to join politics? I grew up in a place where justice and fairness are alien in words and in action. Day after day, I watched as my people are being oppressed; I watch as my people are being denied certain basic fundamental provisions that are their rights. It pains me to see able productive youths roaming the streets doing nothing. I said to myself, “Bello, you left Nigeria for a

“For me, it is not about the money. I am simply tired of watching people’s fundamental rights being trampled upon. The people are tired of being oppressed and are in dire need for a change for the better ” reason and you have come back for a reason. Do you intend to keep watching?” This has been the main question bothering me every now and then. Then, all of a sudden, a group of concerned citizens in my constituency came to me and said they have unanimously agreed that I should run for the Bassa\Jos-North Federal Constituency in the National Assembly. I wanted to reject because I didn’t know what spurred them on to do that. But I became fully committed when the elders in my constituency called me and demanded that I should run. That was how the movement started, and I am telling you that my constituency has endorsed me wholeheartedly.

If you win, would you quit acting? This is not about my career as an actor; it is about serving your people. Acting is my profession and I will not quit it. In fact, I will take it to the next level. However, being a House member, it would be my major responsibility to represent and protect my people’s interests, and that I am committed to do diligently.

It is believed that artistes are venturing into politics because that is where the easy money is. Are you also venturing for the money? Whatever, you intend to do, there will always be some people to attach a meaning to it. For me, it is not about the money. I am simply tired of watching people’s fundamental rights being trampled

TAMBARI 2ND NOVEMBER, 2014 upon. The people are tired of being oppressed and are in dire need for a change for the better. They believe that through me, they can get that change. It is disheartening to see that the elite live in comfort oblivious of what the poor man goes through daily before he could secure a meal in his house.

As an actor, what would be your contribution to the development of the movie industry? If I win, I will do everything possible to enhance and upgrade the movie industry, not only because it is my roots, but because it is one of the largest employment providers in Nigeria. If we develop it, it means more youths will gain employment and food will be made available to many families. That way, I will be leaving a good legacy for this generation and generations yet unborn.

What are the changes you intend to bring about if you win? My target is to return peace to my people. I want to see love, brotherhood, affection and tolerance return to my people. I want my constituency, my state and my region to live in peace and harmony. I will strive to see the once peaceful state gain its virtues back. That is what my people have been missing and that is what I intend to give them back.

HEALTHY LIVING

Health Benefits of Olive BY Fatima Hussein Yakasai

P

erhaps not for its fruit but its oil, the olive is recognized as one of the healthiest fruits in the world. Olive comes from a small tree belonging to the family of the oleaceae specie and is found mostly in Africa, Portugal and Southern Asia. Olives serve various purposes around the world and are among the most symbolic fruits mentioned in holy texts. “Everything about the olive is useful”, as emphasized by Doctor Munir Hussain from S.T.H Centre, Department of Internal Medicine. “It is cholesterolfree and has many components used for medicine, cosmetics and confectioneries. It also has the safest oil used in cooking and bakery, apart from fish oil”. The olive is packed with a substantial amount of healthy nutrients for the body. The anti-oxidants found in black olives help in preventing heart diseases. Olives contain fat called monounsaturated fat, which is considered safe and has been proven to help in reducing weight. The monounsaturated fat cancels out saturated fat in the cell; this helps in removing belly fat. The anti-inflammatory properties and anti-oxidants in olive help in preventing cancer. “Vitamin E in black olives helps in preventing ultraviolet radiation of the skin, while applying olive oil directly on the skin helps in treating rashes, improving complexion and preventing skin cancer.” Apart from its fruit, the olive leaf also has some health benefits. The olive leaf contains oleuropein that is extracted and is used to control hypotension, that is, low blood pressure. It also helps to fight other chronic diseases like cancer, diabetes and arthritis. Olive oil can also be used for other means, like as a shaving gel, manicure, hair moisturizer, body lotion and many more.

How Sesame oil can improve skin, hair care BY Mulikatu Mukaila

S

esame seeds come from the sesame plant, which is grown in the most African countries. Its seeds have one of the highest yields of all oilseeds, which can be used extensively in cooking. Sesame seed oil is full of ingredients that can provide many different parts of the beauty regime, with properties for the hair and skin, and for anti-ageing. Here are some beauty tips on sesame seeds:

1. Promotes hair growth Using sesame seed oil as a hot oil treatment for your hair is known to help the growth of thick and shiny hair which can be massaged into your hair and scalp to nourish and encourage new growth.

2. Sesame oil has anti-ageing properties for the skin Sesame seed oil is a great source of vitamin E, the anti-oxidant used in many commercially available anti-ageing creams. It also helps to fight the effects of free radicals, which are the main cause of premature ageing of the skin.

3. Removes skin blemishes Sesame seed oil can be used as treatment for skin conditions by applying before you go to bed at night and washing it off in the morning. It will not only nourish and moisturize your skin, but also help fight blemishes and keep your skin clear and fresh looking.

4. Speeds up the healing process

“Apply the oil to your feet and hands, and massage it in before going to bed and then leave the oil on, with a pair of socks and cosy gloves on to keep the oil off the bed sheets. and reduces the appearance of scars Sesame seed oil is a good treatment for cuts and wounds as it helps to promote faster healing and

reduces the appearance of scars on the skin.

5. Cracked heels and dry hands treatment One of the amazing benefits of sesame oil is that it can help soothe and heal cracked heels and dry hands. Apply the oil to your feet and hands, and massage it in before going to bed and then leave the oil on, with a pair of socks and cosy gloves on to keep the oil off the bed sheets. The oil will penetrate deep into the skin to bring quick relief to dry and cracked skin, making it softer, smoother and younger.

6. It can be used as a hair darkener Used with other carrier oils like argan oil, coconut oil, olive oil or sweet almond oil, sesame oil is well known for its hair darkening properties. It is particularly effective as a means of minimizing the appearance of premature greying of hair in people with black hair.
