t has been quite a relaxing week for most people, thanks to the Sallah break. OF NOTE: Everyone looks forward to holidays, PRIORITISE even if it’s few days. Unfortunately, going YOUR TASK back to work after a break can make you feel like the holidays shouldn’t end. Is there ON YOUR a secret to keeping the post-holiday serenity FIRST DAY OF and freshness for just a little while longer? Luckily, with our etiquette tips for returning RETURNING to work after Sallah, you can accomplish a TO WORK smooth resumption. Check your work calendar: The week at home might have made you forget certain things or meetings. So before returning to work, take a look at your calendar so that you are not caught off guard by anything. Take a careful look at them to know what sort of preparation you need to do. This will allow you know whether you are prepared for a meeting or not, and what can be done, instead of setting back everyone at work if you show up unprepared. Plan ahead: You need to make a short priority list for first things you plan to tackle upon your return. Whether you are waiting for feedback on a proposal draft, a response from a client, or a deadline for a report to become available, commit them all to paper. Priorities at work can change fast, but starting from a list gives you a better launch point, no matter what happens. Get caught up: Before you throw yourself back into work totally, try to find out what went down while you were on holidays. This doesn’t mean you should participate in inconsequential office gossip; instead, it means you should try and get a broad sense of whether there is any new project, where old projects stand, and so on. This will help make life easier for you and your co-workers because you would be aware of all you need to do. Move on: Don’t dwell on the break. A lot of people get in bad moods by focusing too much on the fact that their break is over. Carrying a bad mood to work is poor etiquette as it will affect your work performance and sometimes make your colleagues feel bad. Forget about the holidays and put your attention back to work and how you can be productive.

HAJIYA FATI JAJERE // CO V E R

Women need to do away with greed, jealousy and emnity Interview by DALHATU LIMAN (ABUJA) & RABILU ABUBAKAR (GOMBE) Educational background started my primary school education in Potiskum. When my father was turbaned as the district head of Gadaka in Fika Local Government Area, I was transferred too and I completed my primary education there. Thereafter, I enrolled in Government Secondary School, Gadaka. I later got married, so I had to stop tertiary education. But after the demise of my husband, I got the opportunity to obtain a diploma in Computer Science. I now want to obtain a degree in the National Open University of Nigeria. I ventured into business and now go to London, Germany, Austria and Dubai to buy clothing and other materials, which I subsequently sell here in Nigeria. Presently, I live in Tarauni, Kano, where I do my business and live with my children. I am active in politics. I was the North-East zonal coordinator of the Atiku Care Foundation, but after he left the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), I had no option than to abandon him because I am a patriotic northeasterner. I also acted as a woman leader in the campaign team of our present senator, Alhaji Ibrahim Bomai during his quest for the governorship seat. I still act as the one in charge of women affairs in politics, a position that has given me a lot of experiences on the plight of women in Yobe. Since then, I promised to empower them, not minding whether we win or lose. And I will continue in that regard. I am going to call on the entire representatives of Yobe State, either in the state or at the federal level to join hands in empowering women. As a businesswoman, what are you mostly proud of? I feel fascinated and pampered when I find myself too busy and engaged with especially business, when I have my shop filled with customers. I hate idleness. For politics, get I entertained w h e n I find my s el f

Hajiya Fati Jajere is the chairperson of F-Jajere Foundation. She is a philanthropist, businesswoman, politician and traditional title holder. In this interview, the indigene of Yobe State, who was born on January 1, 1983 and raised in Potiskum, shared her experiences with Tambari.

amidst fellow women. They are my supporters. How I wish I could cater for all their needs; but my capacity is not up to that. I feel proud whenever I give something out, no matter how little it is and the receiver shows gratefulness. I cherish giving out more than anything in my life. Why did you join politics? It is the motivation from my godfather, Alhaji Ibrahim Bomai. He even made it clear that I would only be in charge of women’s wing. However, initially, my mum objected to it. Hajiya Khadija Abba Ibrahim, the former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, also encouraged me to join politics. She is a good wife and very decent. It is seen as a dirty thing for women to join politics. I can say that politics runs in my family’s blood. My father was an active politician, right from the Northern Elements Progressives Union (NEPU) era. We mobilise women to participate politics. In my zone alone, I registered more than 28,000 women who voted in all the elections. Honestly, I just found myself in politics; I never

thought of it. However, it is challenging. How would you describe F-Jajere Foundation? I established the Foundation out of my passion and interest to give a sense of belonging to the less privileged. It is not for the sake of politics. The Foundation kickedstarted its outreach programme recently when it donated some materials in the labour room of one hospital. And we are planning to kick-start training acquisition skills. Also, we are determined to provide school uniforms for 50 orphans from each of the four local governments in my zone. We wanted to help girls who finished high school, but because of lack of money, we couldn’t go further; but we can provide them with the necessities to further their education. How did you meet your husband? I met him when our father was turbaned as the Emir of Gudu under Fika Local Government Council. A younger brother of our dad invited him to the event. He was a manager and our uncle was a deputy manager in Standard Trust Bank. As soon as he saw me he whispered that he had seen his wife. He was asked if he knew me and he said no, but he insisted that I was his soul-mate. We got married only three weeks from the first meeting. That’s how it all happened. Most cherished attribute of his He was very obedient to his parents. He was too religious. He was humble and lived a moderate live, unlike his juniors in the office who spent lavishly. In fact, he was very ascetic. He wasn’t impatient. He was very fond of making his family happy. He was always looking forward to giving the less privileged a sense of belonging. He had all the good characters expected from a faithful. May he enjoy eternal rest in the highest heavens (Jannatul Firdaus). Ameen. What wouldn’t you be caught wearing? Indecent dress; I hate it because I am a Muslim faithful. Favourite music I listen to Indian music very often because they arouse my emotions. I also listen to love music. For northern music, I listen to Adam Zango’s lyrics; they make me laugh. Favourite sport I cherish badminton most. It has been my favourite game since I was in high school. Favourite colour and car I cherish red colour, then dark blue. For cars, I liked white Toyota or Honda. What’s on your wish list? First, I want to raise my children. I would like to see them educated and gainfully employed or join business. I want the females to grow up and go to their matrimonial homes. I want to see myself participating in any effort aimed at uplifting women in the North. I always look forward to seeing that F-Jajere Foundation thrives, to the extent that it can cater and empower at least 500 to 1000 women every year. I also want to get married again to a decent and

Abaya is my simple dress. Favourite perfume I like Givenchy and J’adow by Christain Dior because of their pleasant fragrance. Favourite designer shoes? I have no choice on that. I am more of traditional than English, so I need not to wear a designer. Advice to women We should do away with greed, jealousy and enmity. Those of us who are well-to- do should spare something to train fellow women in skills acquisition; it can help their sufferings. I want us to manage the little we get to make sure that our children go to school. Don’t allow your children to rot in the streets hawking. Instead, you should be the hawker and allow them go to school. In the future you will reap from the education you gave them. Women should struggle a lot for their children. Advice to young women looking up to you This category of my sisters should not spoil their lives going after bad boys. They should not bring bad names to themselves and their families. They should be resolute and focused in life. You can start up a business with little money, as little as N5,000. Amazing beauty benefits of cinnamon you’re unaware of

by ABIOLA AMINAT ADEPOJU

A

part from spicing up your coffee and giving flavour to your baked stuffs, cinnamon is a great skincare ingredient. A lot of people are unaware of the medicinal properties of cinnamon and how it can be used as an anti-inflammatory and anti-ageing

ingredient. You can include this wonderful spice in your beauty routine. Flawless skin: Cinnamon is antimicrobial, meaning that it helps destroy any bacteria on your skin, like the acne-causing ones. Applying cinnamon to your skin

DID YOU KNOW... CINNAMON HAS BEEN USED FOR CENTURIES IN TRADITIONAL CHINESE AND AYRUVEDIC MEDICINE FOR SKIN DISORDERS?

once a week will clear any unwanted thing on your skin, thus giving you a smooth and flawless skin. Luscious lips: With cinnamon you don’t have to waste money on expensive lip plumpers, lipsticks and glosses. Instead, use it to achieve a fuller pout by simply swiping some Vaseline across your lips and gently patting a bit of cinnamon on top. You should feel a slight tingling sensation and lips will redden and swell slightly. Leave on for few minutes, gently rubbing the cinnamon around, then wipe it off. Voila! You’ve your luscious lips. Good breath: This one might look like it has a little to do with beauty, but we disagree. Your mouth odour is as much a beauty item as your face is. Use cinnamon to freshen your breath with a few gargles of warm water. Alternatively, chew a few cinnamon sticks to sweeten your breath and get rid of any nasty odour. Hair growth: Cinnamon is another great product that boosts your hair growth and gives your scalp some tender loving care. Try a weekly cinnamon hair mask made with cinnamon, honey and warm olive or coconut oil. Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes, then wash out with shampoo. But this one is best for those without sensitive scalps as the tingling can irritate the skin. With additional information from the internet

M

ost of us, especially those who have a history of dieting, are currently trying to lose weight, or due to health challenges have decided to be more health-focused. In reality, our bodies are amazing and can bounce back fairly quickly after a break from your routine. However, it is important to get back on track as soon as you can follow these steps. Drink water: This is the most important step you should take after holidays. You have probably been eating and drinking things that are high in sodium, sugar and so on. Water is very essential in helping your body detox. Drinking water helps boost your metabolism, cleanse your body of waste, and acts as an appetite suppressant. Also, drinking more water helps your body to stop retaining water, leading you to drop those extra pounds of water weight, says Dr. Tope Abayomi of UNIMED Teaching Hospital, Akure. So drink at least 8 cups of water per day to help your body bounce back quickly. Eat healthy: When we say eat healthy, it doesn’t just mean counting calories, it means eat well. Don’t try to make up for the extra calories you consumed during Sallah by skipping meals. That leaves you hungry; instead, cut back with a series of small meals packed with fruits and vegetables. Don’t starve yourself out of guilt; that’s unhealthy. However, you have to be conscious every time your hand goes from a plate to your mouth. Get some exercise: Exercise is a good idea after indulging during festivities. However, if you were not a big exercise person before

Sallah, don’t rush in to do a mega workout to try to burn off all the calories you just ate. If you overload and do more than your body can take, you could strain a muscle or hurt yourself. So ease yourself into exercising slowly. Ignore weigh-ins: It is normal that you want to know how much you have gained over the break. Don’t get discouraged when you see you have added a few pounds. After a feast like Sallah, you may weigh more. That’s not because you gained body fat, but because of water retention from extra salt that was in the food you ate. So don’t weigh yourself, and if you do, don’t allow the number of the scale get to you. Just focus on eating healthy and not on the numbers. With additional information from the internet

CONFUSED AND IN NEED OF HELP I am 40 yrs old male, suffering from mild lower abdominal pain which started some few years ago and later resulted to weakening of the waist muscles and weak erection, thereby making it difficult for me to urinate. The numbness appears to be spreading to other parts of the body. I also experience dryness of the throat, itchy eyes and ears, constant headache and dryness of the eyes at night thereby making it impossible for me to sleep without medication. I’ve visited various hospitals (public and private) for tests but all tests all came out negative. I am confused and don’t know what to do. Idris I empathize with you especially for the fact that no specific diagnosis. I hope you have seen a physician in the Specialist or the specialist hospital. Confirm the consultant you met and let all the result be harmonized. There might be need for assessment by ahematologist. I will suggest you take all the result to see a consultant in the teaching hospital. You can also send the report by mail to me (see email address in this column) for further analysis and advice.

HOW TRUE IS THIS? Is it true that when taking HIV medication the virus go can away and one may not need the drug again? Hajiya Salisu The answer is no. The virus can become undetectable in blood. That does not mean that if one medication is stopped it will not grow again. Therefor even when the virus is undetectable the patient has to continue medication. Treatment is for life but the good news is that one can live a normal life.

WHAT DO I DO TO PREVENT IT? Kindly educate me about how I can protect myself from cancer. I lost an aunt last two years and another cousin of mine is dying from it now. Laitu, Kaduna Cancer is an abnormal, uncontrolled cell growth. It can occur in any part or organ of the body from the skin to the head to the sole of the foot. The cancers are so numerous that it may be difficult to mention them. The one specific to females include cervical cancer, ovarian and endometrial cancer. Other cancers that can affect both sexes include breast, lung and hepatocellular cancer among others. Cancers of the blood cells like leukemia are not uncommon. In most cases it is difficult to identify the specific cause of cancers but there are some common risk factors that could increase the tendency to have the specific cancers. For example, smoking over a long period will lead to increased risk of lung cancer. Multiple sexual partners increase the risk for cervical cancer while alcoholics have increased chances of developing liver cancer. As a woman do regular breast examination to prevent breast cancer and pap smear annually or biannually to prevent cervical cancer.

STILL LACTATING AFTER EIGHTS MONTHS OF WEANING I have stopped breastfeeding my child for eight months now but I’m still lactating. Please what do I do? Mrs Ayo, Abaji-Abuja It is not uncommon. It’s due to high prolactin level and you may need drugs to control it. You will need to see your family physician or a gynecologist for investigation and prescription. But meanwhile your spouse has to reduce sucking the breast and also playing with it for nowwhich can increase the flow and make it difficult to stop.
