Educational background I am from Ogun state and studied Gender Studies at the University of London, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London and Political Science at the University of Lund in Sweden. Career background Prior to founding MsAfropolitan in 2010, I worked in the creative industries, managing branding, marketing and project management projects across different countries and continents. For two years, as a complement to the blog, I ran The MsAfropolitan Boutique, an online shop selling a wide range of products made by women of African heritage. The shop was launched as a tribute to the African Women’s Decade 2010 – 2020. Growing up days My late mum used to jokingly tell people that I was a blogger already as a child. Of course, blogs did not exist in the 80s when I grew up. But when I wasn’t scribbling in a diary, which hich I did as soon as I learnt to read and write at four, I would contribute to school pamphlets ets with articles that had titles such ‘How to bee happy’, ‘The Nigerian Future’ or ‘Advice’ e’. In a sense, that’s a description of what growing up was like for me. I was a curious child who liked expressing herself. Passion for Feminism Advocacy From a young age I saw that society favoured the male gender. I noticed it in my own family, in friends’ families, at school, in books, on TV, you name ame it. Simultaneously, I saw that there here was a difference between the two countries and continents that I come from, Finland and Nigeria; Africa ca and Europe one was incrediblyy developed and its citizens were re looked after, and in the other people suffereddisproportionally. ally. Also, I was raised in a home environment where political and intellectual discussion was common. But the short answer to the question is that I was most likely born with a feminist spirit! Well, you know how babies are born with their own personalities. I was driven by a need to contribute, and to some extent introduce, mainstream commentary about African popular opular culture from a clearly feminist perspective. Blogs about African society were ere male dominant and the feminist blogs ogs I came across were Eurocentric. Most of the African feminist writing I encountered untered was either academic or fiction writing. It was brilliant work but I longed ed to read commentary about Africa from m a feminist angle and commentary aboutt feminism from an African angle. Not finding ding much, I set up MsAfropolitan. In a sense se I was writing what I wanted to read. I realizee these things in hindsight at the time, it was just ust an obsessive need to write myself into being. g.

Best book read as a writer I’m rereading Sefi Atta’s “Everything Good Will Come”. It is one of my favourite books of all time because it portrays life as a woman in Lagos, and Nigerian society so familiarly and astutely. Best food I like all food but I must admit that I eat plantain very often. My style My style is a mix of African, African-American and Scandinavian. You could call it Afro-Nordic or something. They keep my skin relatively free from break outs Awards Winner of an African Diaspora Award & Women for Africa Award Life achievements While I could never have predicted how successful MsAfropolitan would become, I’m not entirely surprised by the impact it has had. In an ever-shrinking world, there is a thirst for alternative narratives and people are keen to read commentary that unravels myths and shifts perceptions. Hardly a month passes that I’m not promoting MsAfropolitan and its subject matters somewhere in the UK or abroad. From the publicity that I do, it is obvious that there is a demand for a strong and clear feminist voice about contemporary Africa. Advice mum gave that stuck My mother always said to me, “Find your happiness. Do not waste time doing anything that makes you unhappy or

Women’s role in the society Nigerian women will be empowered when we realize our potential. There is no country in the world with a larger black African female population than Nigeria. To be a Nigerian woman is to come from a country with an incredibly rich source of natural resources. Of course, Nigerian men share that rich heritage, but it is noteworthy that in Nigeria women are, the gender with a deeper knowledge of working the land both historically and today. Furthermore, to be a Nigerian woman is to come from a country with infinite stories to discover, or rediscover rather. For example, who will be the first Nigerian woman to sail the length of the River Niger or, to become the first

female president? Why don’t we explore the rivers, mountains and plateaus of our country and name them after ourselves and our daughters? We have been brainwashed to think ourselves small but once we see the truth of our potential we can start to take space both in the private and public sphere. Advice for women who aspire to be like me The same advice my mother gave me is what I wish to convey to other women. I wish for my writing to make African women question why we accept some of the things that we should not accept, and to unearth truths that will inspire us to become our highest selves.

DISCHARGE WITH OFFENSIVE ODOUR I am a sixteen year old virgin, recently I noticed a change in my discharge; which is now yellow in colour and has a offensive odour. Also, fourteen days after my period I get severe left waist pains and sometimes on the right which spreads to my stomach and to the pelvic region, which may last for hours or a day at most. I do not see the normal white ovulation mucus. What is happening? Hafsat from Kano. The pains you are having on the fourteenth day is ovulatory pains otherwise called mittleschemerz. It is not unusual. The yellowish, offensive odour discharge is a sign of pelvic infection most likely mixed infection including chlamydia. You will need to see a gynaecologist, do a swab test and you will need antibiotic cover. No matter the sensitivity pattern, Doxycycline or any of its group must be added and used for ten to fourteen days.

IRREGULAR PERIODS - WHAT DO I DO? I am 30 years old now and have being experiencing irregular menstruation for three to six months for over 4years now. It doesn’t come naturally unless I take some corrective medication. I have visited many gynaecologists and I have been given many medications for example family planning pills, and pills used for treating diabetic patients, etc. But I am still experiencing the same issue. Hadassah, Kaduna. This is likely a case of Polycystic ovarian disease. Other steps that you can take since you use drugs like metformin (diabetic drugs) include life style modification, through diet and excercise and weight reduction. Resistant cases may benefit from ovarian drilling where laparoscopically, about four point drilling is done on the ovaries and this help to restore menses and also fertility issues is addressed. Where this fails, to address the issue of fertility, assisted conception therapy with high dose

stimulation of the ovaries have been successful for egg retrieval and IVF. Sometimes donor eggs may have to be used. I will suggest you avoid “doctor shopping”. The practice by expert is similar so that investigations and similar drugs will not be administered unnecessarily. instead you can go to where technology is more advanced for appropriate treatment. All these are also available in Nigeria both in government and private hospitals.

FAMILY PLANNING What drug can my wife take we had unplanned sex close to her ovulation and we already have eight kids. Sule Lokoja. What she should have taken immediately after the intercourse was an emergency contraception like post coital pills. Also insertion of intrauterine devices (IUCD) within five days of intercourse will also be ok. I will suggest you both visit a family planning centre for a long acting contraceptive method.

THOUGH WITH STROKE, AM I STILL STERILE? I suffered a stroke in 2012 since then I have been on drugs for stroke. Please, can the drugs stop me from impregnating a woman. I did sperm test twice recently and the test were normal. What do I do? David from Jos. It does not stop you from impregnating a woman. More so you have also done the seminal fluid analysis which was normal.

GLAMOURISE WITH SINK CURTAINS by PRISCA EMADU

C

urtains are common home features that compliment the decoration of homes. This decorative tool is not only used in sitting and bed rooms, but can also be used in places of the home like the kitchen and bathroom. Curtains used in the unconventional places are basically known as sink curtains. Sink curtains serve the same purpose like when it is used in other rooms. They are used for aesthetic purpose and also as a shield thereby creating a room where kitchen equipments and toiletries can be kept. They are sewn in a straight line of gathers. The one in the kitchen is most times in between two cupboards, thereby adding beauty to the kitchen, while the one used in the bathroom is used to cover round the sink for brushing and washing hand or face.

12

TAMBARI OCTOBER 18, 2015

These curtains usually come in colourful printed designs that make the room look serene. They can also be gotten in different materials, ranging from silk to cotton and nylon materials whatever suits for style. When you want to get a sink curtain, bear in mind the painting of the room where it would be placed, space and the best material that would suit the room. Many like using floral materials for sink curtains, others go for plain materials, and it all depends on your taste and your style of decoration. Some make sure that each item in the room matches the sink curtains. Sink curtain is a very good, simple and useful decorative tool that adds glam to your room of comfort.

FINE COOKING

CASHEW MATTAR INGREDIENTS IN CASHEW MATTAR CASHEW NUTS: This doesn’t come as a surprise as the name already hints towards this particular ingredient. Did you know that in India they call them “Caju”? These kidney shaped beauty have so many benefits from consumption as we have previously highlighted and the taste just hits the right spot every single time. They have a high copper content which is very vital in energy production. Another benefit includes a greater flexibility in blood vessels, bones and joints. The use of cashews in cooking is endless. You can add cashews breakfast cereals, or blend with dried fruits such as apricots, and garnish your yogurt or fresh fruit salad. You can

You already know that here at Wakkis what we specialise in is great food. We offer platters that are bound to enhance the fine dining experience. We present to you cashew nut and green peas curry which has been carefully selected and seasoned to meet and exceed each customers expectation of this dish. We get hungry just thinking about it!

also be very adventurous by adding them to baked goods such as cookies, cakes, quick breads, muffins and scones. The thought of it already makes your stomach churn for some goodies. Who’s hungry!

GREEN PEAS: They are oh so green ....like two peas in a pod! Luckily for you, in this dish we use way more than two peas to complete this masterpiece. Raw peas are said to contain about 79% water and about 9.6% carbohydrates, which mainly constitutes starch and a few amounts of saccharose - a complex carbohydrate found in many plants. We can’t begin to stress the benefits of consuming complex carbohydrates

as opposed to refined carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates contain vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They take longer to digest and offer vital nutrients the body needs along the way. They also offer indigestible fibres that aren’t broken down and instead aid in gut health and elimination of stool. The next time you see a green pea I’m sure you would battle for it so you don’t miss out on all the essentials. It probably would sound cliché to tell you to come and try this dish. So instead we want to challenge you to live a little. You need to explore your taste buds with this dish. Have it with some steamed basmati rice

very woman dreads to look old. That is why our beauty should always be on point by looking after ourselves, from the skin to hair. For a woman, life doesn’t stop at 40 but, rather, as many will say “its the begining. This is the reason why many believe that our beauty shouldn’t fade once we attain the age of 40. Rather it should be the turning point for our beauty regime.

Here are some tips to follow: 1. Exfoliate your skin: You don’t have to visit a spa before you can exfoliate your skin, you can make your bathroom a mini spa. All you need to do is to give yourself some quality timing to cleanse your skin with homemade natural ingredients. This will help in removing dead skin and increase blood circulation and give glowing skin. 2. Exercise: Regular exercise will help you in keeping fit and and having a toned skin as the benefits of exercise are endless. 3. Unique Nigerian traditional dishes by PRISCA EMADU

I

n Nigeria, just as we are diversified in language, culture and traditions, so are our meals different. As we already know, the three major ethnic groups in Nigeria are Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa. There are over three hundred ethnic groups in Nigeria and they all have their different dishes that stand them out from the other, they may be similar but unique. Some of these traditional dishes have their significance and are relevant at most cultural event or ceremony.

Here are some dishes that stand out with different ethnic groups in Nigeria. -Ekuru: This meal is common among the Yoruba. It is made with peeled, washed and blended beans wrapped with banana leaves, steamed till cooked. The dish can be served with pepper sauce. Ebatu sauce is made with garden egg, ewedu and other ingredients. The dish is a delight amongst the Yoruba’s. -Okpa: This is a traditional food in

Nigeria that is known with the Igbo. It is made from bambara flour. It is also called, by the Igbo, as the lion’s food or the king’s meal. This meal is gradually warming its way into manay hearts. -Miyan busheshen kubewa: Aside the traditional way of grating and cooking okra, there are other ways to cook the vegetable. Miyan busheshen kubewa is a Hausa delicacy. It is made with dried okra, daddawa (locust beans), meat, fish, pepper and other ingredients and served with delight along with hot steaming Tuwon Masara. -Starch: this is not like the one used in washing clothes. It is a solid food that is well revered and respected by people from the Niger Delta, it is locally known as uzi amongst the Urhobo and Isoko people. The delicacy can be enjoyed with their local soups called owo or banga soup. -Ji Abubo: This is another delicacy that is common among the Igbo. It is made with white yam, pumpkin leaves, and shredded oil bean seed called ukpaka. The Igbo enjoy this meal, you can try it too. It is tasty. -Kunnu gyada: This delicacy is another meal that make people from the North salivate. It is made with rice, groundnut (soaked, peeled and grinded), groundnut oil, lemon and ginger. This meal is a favourite for many from the Northern and even those from other parts of Nigeria. Nigeria is blessed with so many unique and natural resources, making it possible for people of different ethnicity to come out with so many delicacies that stand them out. Indeed, Nigeria is blessed.
