DIARRHEA IN PREGNANCY I will like to know what causes diarrhea in pregnancy and the treatment. Aisha, Lafia Diarrhea is not uncommon in pregnancy. Causes includes: digestive problems, Viral and bacteria infection, contaminated foods or food poisoning, typhoid fever, intestinal parasites and medicines. The multivitamin given in pregnancy may also cause diarrhea.

The first and most difficult is the replacement policy with oral rehydration therapy ORS solution. Most case of diarrhea are self limiting. Some may require antibiotics, and few will benefit from anti- diarrhea agents. In appropriate cases deworming the patient even in pregnancy may be necessary.

PAP SMEAR RESULT-NEGATIVE WITH INFLAMMATION I did a Pap smear and the results read negative but with inflammation. Please what do I do? - annonymous Pap smear which is the short form for Papanicolauou smear test is used for cervical screening to prevent cervical cancer. Women who do Pap smear regularly in every one to three years interval is unlikely to develop cervix cancer which is a leading cause of death especially women in sub Saharan Africa. Negative smear means no problem but because of the inflammation appropriate antibiotics will be necessary. We encourage women of reproductive age and postmenopausal women to go for Pap smear.

Please, we encourge all who send questions or contributions to include at least their first name and town or city. Readers are also advised to copy the Tambari email address above while writing in. Thank you - Editor PAGE 28 TAMBARI SUNDAY, F E B R UA R Y 26, 2017

Finding fulfilment in education interview by JAMILA DAUDA FREDA

A

kunna .O.Nwamuo is the last born of four children. She was born on 20th September in Oakland, California to a close knitted family and raised in Richmond, San Francisco bay area, USA. The delectable Akunna an indegene of Imo State and proprietress of Lapetit Academy, Abuja talks about how believing in herself and staying positive has helped her through life’s journey.

Educational background I started my secondary education in El Cerrito California where I attended El Cerrito High School, graduated and received my diploma in 1998. I gained admission to California State University Hayward where I obtained a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Business Administration with emphasis in Entrepreneurial Studies in 2004. I went on to further my education and earned an MBA in Strategic Management with a minor in project management from John F. Kennedy University in 2008. Career Background Due to the nature of the American system, I was able to start my first part time job while attending secondary school with a fast food restaurant as well as the local shopping mall. My parents taught my siblings and I early in life that if you want something you have to work hard for it. That mentality has followed me into my adulthood. My first corporate job was with Bank of America in which I held various positions within for five and a half years. I went on to hold great middle management positions within the Finance and IT sectors of Silicon Valley, California. In my spare time I volunteered at my family’s church, St. Johns the Baptiste Catholic Church. In addition, I also co-founded a non-profit Nigeria youth organisation in California named BANYA (Bay Area Nigerian Youth Association).

Corporate Nigeria work Experience Before I relocated to Nigeria, I secured a management level position from the US in a subsidiary of FIN Bank in Lagos, and later transitioned into a managerial position with the multinational technology company Hewlett Packard also in Lagos. I did my NYSC with NNPC in Abuja. After spending several years working in corporate America and corporate Nigeria, I wanted to do something that I had a passion for. So I opened a school. I am currently the proprietress of La Petite Academy in, Abuja. Honestly, working with children has always made me happy. I feel extremely fulfilled with what I am doing, and God willing I will be in this line of work until I retire. Growing up Growing up was interesting, and fun. Being the youngest of four siblings, everyone had a role in my upbringing. My parents really tried their best to give us what we needed. We spent a lot of family time together. My parents always made sure that we didn’t lose touch of our Nigerian roots so every year we would plan family vacations to Nigeria. Life lessons Life has taught me to always believe in onself; Try to stay positive in the midst of any adversity. Be careful in the company you keep and remain prayerful. All these have helped

BEING ABLE TO WORK WITH CHILDREN. SEEING THEM EVERY DAY GIVES ME A SPECIAL TYPE OF JOY THAT I CAN’T FULLY ARTICULATE WITH JUST WORDS. me go through this journey called life. Balancing work and home I try to create a list of priorities daily; most days its works. As an entrepreneur you’re always working but I try my best to leave my work in the office so when I am at home I focus on being at home. It is not easy. Most rewarding part of your career Being able to work with children. Seeing them every day gives me a special type of joy that I can’t fully articulate with just words. Aspirations growing up I always wanted to be in a privileged position to help others as well as be wealthy enough to live an exceptionally good life. Financial freedom was important to me. I initially wanted to become a pediatrician which would give me the opportunity to help children and make good living, but I changed my major and studied Business Admin instead. It still worked

out well in the end. Fond childhood memories Playing team sports. I was on the basketball, volleyball and track and field team as an adolescent up until my university years and I fully enjoyed the experience and friendships I made with my team members. Your typical day I wake up at 6:30am, say a little prayer, look at my phone for messages, look at my schedule for the day, go to the gym, eat a light breakfast, shower, dress up, and head to the office. My schedule changes daily, but my priority is making sure I am around the school to give my staff and my pupils the support they need. Even if I travel and have to work outside of the school, I always make sure I am available to my staff. I usually have long days that end by 8pm. Super Foods which help reduce belly fat

Stories by JAMILA FREDA DAUDA

B

elly fat accumulates around the midsection and it is a major concern for many ladies and some men...too. Belly fat makes one so unattractive and it also increases the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes and fatty liver diseases. These are a few foods to help reduce belly fat. Watermelon: This fruit contains 91 percent of water and when you eat it, it fills you up without adding a substantial amount of calories to your meal. It keeps you feeling full longer and also fights water retention. Almond: Is a polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, it contains a good amount of healthy fat. Eating almonds suppresses hunger because the fat in it reduces over eating, and help in fighting against heart diseases. The high fiber content in almonds keeps you feeling full for a longer time. Beans: Different types of beans help reduce body fat, develop muscles and improve the digestion process. Beans also help you feel full for longer time, thus keeping you from over eating. It happens that beans is an excellent source of soluble fiber. This fiber targets belly fat, helps to break down the fat and thereby eliminating it from the body. Beans also contains protein, for energy. Tomatoes: A large tomato has 33 calories,

contains a compound known as 9- oxo-ODA and reduces lipids in the blood, which in turn helps control belly fat. This compound also fights chronic diseases associated with obesity. Tomato has additional health benefits like reducing wrinkles, fighting cancer and reducing cholesterol levels. It’s an excellent source of nutrients like iron, potassium and is rich in vitamins A and C. Include tomato both raw and cooked in your daily diet to enjoy a healthy body. Celery: To achieve a flat tummy, fill your plate with green leafy like celery. It’s extremely low in calories, full of fiber, and contains calcium and vitamin C that helps in weight loss. Drink half a glass of celery juice before eating lunch or dinner to help cleanse your system. Add it to salad or soup. Additional benefit of celery is that it contains apigenin, a natural compound that reduces the risk of ovarian cancer in women. Cucumber: It’s an extremely refreshing and low calorie food. They are packed with minerals, dietary fibers and vitamins. A plate of cucumber salad daily is an effective and healthy way to cleanse your body off harmful toxins, an added benefit is eating cucumbers daily gives you radiant, glowing skin because they are rich in vitamin B and C.

Going Healthy with Ekpang Nkukwo (Cocoyam poridge), an Eifk delight by JAMILA DAUDA FREDA

E

kpang Nkukwo (cocoyam poridge) is an Efik meal which falls under the Nigerian family of porridges. It’s not an everyday meal; Grated cocoyam wrapped in cocoyam leaves and cooked with periwinkles, greens and palm oil. It’s actually a bit finicky to cook, you have to demonstrate alot of patience to prepare it. But its creamy, comfort and healthy food so, it is worth the stress. There is no cooking or preparing this meal without periwinkles, dry/smoked fish, palm oil, cocoyam, crayfish, pepper, spinach, beef or goat meat(optional), seasoning/maggi cubes, salt, onions, scent leaves. You prepare the meat and fish first. Season and boil the beef. Cook the shelled periwinkle for tops 5mins in salted water then clean and keep aside. Soak the smoked fish in hot water and

salt and clean thoroughly. Then prepare the cocoyam. You should have at the back of your mind that cocoyam can be very irritating to the skin, so try to protect your skin with gloves etc. Peel, wash and grate cocoyam into bowl. Peel, wash and grate water yam and add to the cocoyam in the bowl. Season the yam mixture by crumbling the maggi cubes, salt and tablespoon of palm oil. Mix evenly, Wash the cocoyam leaves, spinach thoroughly in water and drain Pick leaves off the stem, place a small amount of yam mixture in each leaf and wrap.

Tropical Whole Juice

T

his juice is gluten free, dairy free, egg free, vegan and good for vegetarians. It may not be suitable for those on diet or watching their blood sugar levels because of its high sugar content. INGREDIENTS: Coconut water Cubes of pineapple Pulp of two passion fruits. In blender add coconut water, pineapple cubes and passion fruits, blend until smooth. Serve over ice and enjoy the tropical treat.

How to prepare the meal finally..... Place the cleaned periwinkles in the pot. Layer the ekpang wraps on top of the periwinkles in the pan. That would give you several layers. Add dried or smoked fish, chopped onions, pepper, maggi, dry crayfish, scent leaf, salt and palm oil. Add water 2 or 3 cups and cook on medium heat for about 15minutes. Stir it slightly and continue to cook for 10/15 minutes. Ensure it’s cooked properly and well then taste and reduce heat. When ready, serve into a bowl and enjoy the sweet Ekpang Nkukwo.
