he year is taking its shape with emerging trends: the return of colour burst, a resurgence of the 70s look; and of course, an infusion of the fashionista’s personal style.

Some of the key tips for 2015 fashion include comfort and creativity - a lot of mix from the old and new.

We expect to see more flowing dresses made from different fabrics, more prints and colours. One of the best elements of today’s fashion will be the priority placed on fabrics. Already, designers are interpreting fashion in ways that make people comfortable with what to wear. Even though

trends will not be left in the confines of designers alone, great ideas seem to have emanated from some of them.

Skirts and fitted tops, as well as dresses, were very prominent in the years past. This, again, doesn’t seem to have taken a backseat. It’s one trend that keeps getting bolder and better.

Keep a space in your wardrobe for it.

ashion has gone far and wide, above other expectations. African designers now see beyond its tips as they make Ankara prints more palatable and suitable by making trousers. The Ankara print trousers, which carry

F

unmi Ogbue is the managing director of Ancorapoint. She holds a degree in Sociology from the University of Lagos and a Masters degree in Organisational Change and Development from the University of Manchester. Having grown up in a military setting, Funmi could relate with the plight of soldiers easily. This made her set up a foundation to help in the welfare of families of soldiers fighting insurgency in different parts of the country. She is married and has three lovely boys.

My background Growing up, I attended quite a few schools as my father was in the Nigerian Army and got posted around the country. I started at Air Force Nursery School, Enugu, and moved on to Christ Nursery School, Ado-Ekiti, Army Children School, Malu Road, Apapa, Lagos, Navy Secondary School, Lagos, University of Lagos (BSc. Sociology) and University of Manchester (M.Sc. Organisational Change and Development). As a child, I always wanted to be a lawyer, work for the United Nations and champion world peace.

My philosophy My philosophy is: Live and let’s live. I believe there’s enough for everyone in the world; as long as you work hard you will succeed. I’ve always been prepared to help others. And I believe I don’t have to keep everything to myself. I remember back in school, when I used to help classmates during exams, believing that as long as I know something, I might as well share it.

When it comes to achievements, I think it’s coping with everything life throws at me and coming out with my head high. I don’t see just one thing as an achievement, but being myself and going through the journey of life, regardless of the ups and downs.

My heroes and heroines As a child I really admired General Ibrahim Babangida. I was in awe of him. I thought he had excellent leadership skills. He also looked after military personnel, and that resonated with me, coming from a military background.

I also admired General Abdulsalami Abubakar. I almost look upon him as the father of Nigerian democracy. If I ever met these two I would like to ask what drove them, and why they did the things they did. Also, what made them care about people the way they did. I admire people who have led and steered their country or people in a significant way.

“I believe there’s enough for everyone in the world; as long as you work hard you will succeed” I like TV shows and reading. I enjoy watching political and legal dramas such as The Good Wife Homeland, 24, West Wing etc. In terms of books, I read books by John Grisham and Jeffery Archer, as well as non-fiction books about people, culture, geography and history.

Favourite vacation spot My favourite vacation spot is New Jersey in USA because it is familiar. It’s a combination of everything – food, cinema, shopping, great family spots and quiet areas along the beach for quiet time.

I find it unnerving to go to unfamiliar places that take time to explore, and by the time you get used to it, it’s time to leave again. New Jersey is a place I know very well. My parents used to live there, so I like to go there. When I’m there it feels like a comfortable holiday.

Lessons I have learnt from life If I were to live life all over again, I think what I’d do differently is perhaps study a bit harder during my undergraduate years and graduate with a first class or 2.1 class of degree. This is because I enjoyed Sociology during my first degree. I found it so easy that I was very complacent and didn’t push myself hard enough. I could have gotten a higher degree than I did. I spent my second degree trying to make up for it. What most people don’t realise is that

your first degree has a huge impact on what you do for the rest of your life.

I had wanted to read Law all my life, but because of some moments of self- doubt I didn’t indicate it as my first choice of study in my JAMB form. When the results came out I scored 254 which was higher than the 250 cut-off for Law, which meant that I would have been offered a place. That remains a big lesson for me. I must always believe in my own abilities and in myself and go after what I want.

You can shape your world. You have a role in what happens to you. You decide how you show up and decide how things will turn out based on the effort you make.

About Support our Troops Foundation My biggest inspiration as a citizen is to keep our country together. Having lived in Liberia, I have seen what war can do to a country and how easily citizens can turn on each other. I just want to encourage and rally around the people who keep the peace, and not allow politics or religion to divide us as a country.

My passions My family, doing the right thing, helping people and fighting injustice.

Style and favourite designers I believe style is fluid (a lot of movement). It should be simple and understated. I like monotones and

I have varied tastes when it comes to designers, but some of my favourites include Antonio Berardi, Alexander McQueen, Hermes and Chanel. At home, I like Sonny Rose, Odio Mimonet, KTE and Lisa Folawiyo Favourite fashion accessories, colour and sport My favourite accessories are bags and jewellery. I really like rings and long necklaces. My favourite colours are purple and green. When it comes to sport, I like polo and athletics.

Spending holidays on an island If I were to spend holidays on an Island for 72 hours, the two key things I would carry with me are my computer and my phone.

Beauty secrets I would say the wise use of colour. It’s important not to have clashing colours, keeping everything similar with just a hint of colour is always good.

Also, I think the hair is very important. Always make sure your hair is neat and well done because no matter how well-dressed you are, untidy hair ruins the entire look.

Fashion no-no My fashion no-no is ill-fitting cloths. I don’t like cloths that are too tight, it is just unattractive. Also, when you look too starchy or stiff – I don’t like that.

Legacy I think I would like to be remembered for being generous, hard work and doing the right thing at the right time. I would like to be remembered as someone who lived with integrity and never went back on her word.

Motherhood experiences I really like babies. I feel babies should be nurtured, so I would always breastfeed my children until they are a year old. I used to put them/carry them/car them on my back no matter where I am in the world because I believe babies need to feel safe as they grow. g But as they grow older olde I become tough and st strict and try to make su sure my kids are disc disciplined. I make sure they work hard and do what they are supposed to do. I don’t lik like spoiled children. ch I’ve I’ got three boys th aand I try to m make sure th they help on one another.

I make sure the they are frien friends who spen spend time togeth together. They also do chores and look after themselves.

I travel a lot, so I’m not sure how hands on I can be. I have a nanny who has been with us fo for 10 years and is very helpful with them. t Their

Two of them are in boarding school, so I try to see them as much as possible and we spend holidays together.

I believe spending time together is very important’ which is why, when the youngest was three weeks old, I was working on a change project with NPHCDA that required travelling across Nigeria and I took him with me on the road trip.

And when I was doing my masters, I took my two boys at the time with me. I tried to show them that a woman has to work and can do that whilst being a mother. Sometimes they also come with me to work and meet clients.

Balancing work and home I try to take two months off during the summer to spend time with them; and we always spend time together when they are at home. I’m also involved in their school, whether it is parents/ teacher meetings or volunteering. I always make the effort. That is how I keep the balance between work, travel and family.

Highest moments as a parent The two that I can remember is when my son got seven As and two A* at Common Entrance. I was very proud of him. It was a big relief; a moment I thanked God that I haven’t gotten it wrong. This is because you can never be sure if not being a fulltime mother is having a negative or positive influence on your kids. So that moment was a validation that we were getting it right.

The other incident was when my younger son came first in all events at his school’s sports day.

That made me very proud. And my baby son is involved a lot in school as well. He had a big role in a recent school play, and I felt happy and content to sit and watch him in the lead. It was another proud moment.

My spouse We went to the same university, so we were aware of each other, but we weren’t in the same social circle. We were introduced by a mutual friend years later after he felt I had no social life and was too focused on work and going to the gym. After the introduction, we carpooled to work and got to know each other very well. We got married a year later.

He’s very supportive. He’s very good with numbers, so he is always available to help me with business matters. He also recommends people he thinks can be helpful to projects I’m working on. He is more sociable and very effective at networking than I am, so he recommends me and my business to clients if he thinks it’s a good fit.

Dreams I want to achieve I have financial targets I’d like to achieve, places I’d like to visit and things I’d like to do which I haven’t done. To get there I think I would have to be tenacious and hardworking and not give up. I’ve always believed that the combination of hard work and finding someone that wants to help you is all you need to achieve targets. And hopefully, the two will align.

2014 was filled with amazing fashion compositions which made the fashion world more colourful and cheerful. In this interview, designers predict possible fashion happenings this year.

Shehu Sabali:(Sabali Fashion) What do you predict in terms of fabrics that will trend in 2015?

For men, I will say that light cotton fabrics with stripes will do the trick this year. Fabrics that are not glossy but embossed with patterns in a matte colour are starting to get very trendy this year. I am also guilty of acquiring some new ones.

What will be the fashion focus this time around?

As always, people want to look better than they

did last year, so this year won’t be any different.

It will start off with more people adapting to the more expensive trends they have been saving up to follow. The rich and trendy will set new trends in the second quarter of the year. Cloths and fabrics of such trends will take a few months for the market to obtain in mass quantity. Highend sneakers are making a comeback for men and women, as well as the increasing presence of flowery fabrics for general clothing.

I

n 2015, I believe men will continue to wear bold colours, not playing with the traditional safe ‘masculine’ colours. This cuts across both native and western attires.

Fabrics will include, but not limited to voiles, cotton and prints for native attires, while cashmere, wool and wool-mixes would be in high demand for men.

The waistcoat will seemingly be making a return in formal and semi formal settings. The senator, south-south, resource control or the African suit, all refer to the same kind of clothing

for men. And this will remain a staple in most male wardrobes, for both young and old alike.

For suits, the shawl lapel and tuxedo will be very visible at red carpets, weddings and dinners. As said earlier, men won’t be afraid to play around with colours.

For male clothing, though the garments are basically the same, there could be a difference in terms of weather suits, kaftans or native and western. So the major defining factors will be the cuts (more fitting) and bolder colours.

Stella Rita Asogwa (Zarita Kouture) What do you foresee in the fashion industry this year?

In the fashion industry I foresee lots of fluidity in the movement of dresses that will be worn this year.

Simplicity but classy would be the word this year in women’s fashion.

What are your predictions in 2015 fashion? In terms of style, design, fabric and colour?

I predict that lots of bold colours would be prominent.

Bold colours like yellow, red, as well as purple. There will be lots of bold print designs on fabrics. And the

use of silk and chiffon fabrics will be in high demand.

These will give fluidity to the movement of the cloths.

There will also be long gowns with the high slits. There will also be the dominance of uneven dresses (where you have one side of a dress longer than the other side).

What unique thing are you adding for your brand this year?

Zarita Kouture will be strategically combining plain and bold print fabrics, together this year, making sure that these styles stay elegant and classy. There will be lots of media presence for Zarita Kouture in 2015.

redictions for 2015: I think people would actually go for comfort this year; hence I can see a lot of free-flowing gowns (A-line gowns, bubus made with rented chiffons). Fitted dresses will take a backseat this year.

Bold colours - reds, purples, fuchsia and yellows – will also be prominent.

I am not really a trend follower per say. With our diffusion line, MISHAMOON, I just go into the regular Nigerian woman’s head and see what she would love to wear! But comfort is the key.

Prints will always trend. Ankara will always win. So we will see a lot of designers using the bold print Ankara.

Of course we will see a lot of stylish head wraps - turbans tied in so many stylish ways. Our almighty gele (gogoro) will reign as it has been over the years.

I can see big bags making a comeback this year. To achieve comfort, flat shoes will be key this year.

The wedding between Samira and Ibrahim Abdullahi, popularly known as Babangida among his peers, will not be forgotten in a hurry.

The lovebirds were said to have met while studying in Egypt four years ago. The relationship culminated in a marital bliss for the duo.

The wedding was held in Kaduna according to Islamic rites though the groom is from Kastina State. Ibrahim is the second and last son to the family of Alhaji Ibrahim and Honourable Hajiya Mariya Abdullahi (MON), a former member of the House of Representatives and the first female local government chairman in Nigeria. HOW TO LOOK AND FEEL GOOD DURING HARMATTAN

rooming habits have varied greatly over time, and as a man, not just how you dress matters but how well you take care of your body and looks. We live in a time when it pays to look younger, whether it’s in the workplace or in a social gathering, one of the keys to success is good grooming.

An increasing number of men are making grooming a priority because they want to maintain a youthful appearance and a winning edge. Below are some grooming tips to enable you, as a man, achieve the good looks because of the wind and dust.

Skin deep: Your skin is very important, exposing the skin to sun. Wind, dust and pollution can hinder it from glowing. The skin tends to get cracked, dry, and becomes flaky during the harmattan period. To avoid this, wear clothes that will cover the skin well. Also use petroleum jelly or lotion to keep it moist always.

Chapped lips: This can be very irritating and at the same time, be painful. Using a lip balm regularly will keep it moisturised and smooth.

Hair: Every man should take care of his hair, especially at this period that is very dusty. The harmatan can also break the hair. Wash the hair with a mild soap as this will stop it from breaking. Also, trim it to make it look good and neat. Use a good hair cream that will not attract dust because a bad hair cream brings dandruff and makes the hair look dirty and unkept. Also, try as much as possible to shave the hairs around the jaw so that you will not be looking all white from the dust.

Avoid black and white cloths because it attracts dust and dirt. If you want to look neat and smart, go for colours that are bright and will stand you out. Avoid cotton materials because it will make you feel uncomfortable; rather, go for light cloths and the type that will not expose the skin to the sun.

I have been having itching after bath for some time now. I don’t know what is wrong and the medication to take.

Since the itching occurs only after bathing, it is most likely you are reacting to something. You may need to change your soap and materials in your bathroom. Also, watch out for pets. Identifying the cause and removing it will be adequate.

MY PRIVATE PART IS BECOMING BLACK My private part is becoming black, sticky, and I can see the appearance of some small rashes, but my period and everything is going smoothly.

Please help me out.

It is better to see the rashes and how it looks like. Are you on any medication? One possibility is genital warts. You will need to do swab test for microscopy, culture and sensitivity. Also, you may need to do pap smear, and if possible screen for human papilloma virus.

Kindly see a gynaecologist and ensure you comply with antibiotic regimen.

WHAT IS BLIGHTED OVUM? My A doctor told me I have a blighted ovum. What is this? Is evacuation the only method of treatment?

Blighted ovum occurs when there is missed abortion at early pregnancy.

The pregnancy stopped growing at the early stage. In this circumstance one will see gestational sac but no fetal pole.

Options of management could include immediate evacuation using the modern method of Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA), or medical management. Medical management requires taking drugs and monitoring. Most will expel the non-viable product of conception after one or two doses of the medication. Some may still require evacuation due to incomplete process of miscarriage.

Medical management has the advantage of avoiding instrumentation, but with the limitation of follow-up and occasional need, there is still need to use MVA to evacuate retained products in some of the patients.

CAN I BE PREGNANT? As a virgin, if I get intimate with a guy who did not break the hymen but releases the sperm around the vulva; is there a possibility of getting pregnant?

-Lilly Yes, there is a possibility. This is because the sperm can move or swim towards the uterus through the introitus.

IS PREGNANT CARE ADEQUATE FOR HAEMATINICS? I was given pregnant-care by my doctor, but in the new place where I registered, my new doctor said I must add folic acid. I feel nauseated whenever I take folic acid? What do I do? - Hailma, Minna.

Initially, quite a number of the combined haematinics used do not have sufficient folic acid or fersolate which will meet normal requirement in pregnancy.

But nowadays, for pregnant women with normal PCV, the supplemental doses in those combined medications are okay.

In case of a patient with low blood level, it may not be adequate. Find out whether you have normal PCV or not. If it is normal, you may continue with your medication. But most likely, you need further supplementation. Next edition, we shall address normal requirement in pregnancy and possible ways of correcting deficiency.

Tagwayen Asali

Hassan and Hussaini Sani Abubakar Ambursa are identical twins, popularly known as Tagwayen Asali in the modern Hausa music industry. They have gradually institutionalised themselves among the first promoters of the Hausa R&B musical genre. In this interview, the Kano-based twins talked about their dreams and the future of the Hausa movie industry, among other things.

Biography We are twins as you can see. And most times people find it very difficult to differentiate between us because we look alike. We were born and raised in Kano State. We attended Fandaudu Basic School, from where we proceeded to Dinop International Secondary, all in Kano State.

After that, we enrolled in a computer school, where we obtained a diploma in Computer Basics. We also obtained a certificate in Public Administration at the Kano State Polytechnic and later went for a national diploma and separately got diploma certificates in English Education and Computer Science respectively.

While growing up, we virtually did everything together, sharing our likes and dislikes. We had the fantasy of being musicians. Many times we would lock ourselves up and try composing songs of our own. We used to mime dance and try practising our fantasies. We had the feeling that we had a lot to offer in the music industry. And that feeling has kept us going up to this level in life.

We believe we possess the talent and have a lot to offer to the music industry, being the universally accepted medium to send messages. As twins we are optimistic that we already have an attraction point; therefore getting into music will easily enable us

get our inputs in the scene. We are not saying there are mistakes, but we feel there is much to do. We want to take Hausa R&B to the next level. We want the world to know that there are talents in the North and in the Hausa natives.

For us, music is our career. We are not into it for the fun of it; that is why we have not restricted ourselves to only singing in Hausa. We have attempted to blend the two languages together in such a unique and innovative manner.

Challenges faced Really, we have faced challenges. This is because we have come up with something that has gone contrary to our socio-cultural heritage. However, being from the North and given our conservative nature, we tried our best to make people understand that this world is changing; and the world can only do better with music and politics.

Gradually, we succeeded in convincing them, especially our parents that we are not into anything illegal. They finally conceded and gave their blessings.

Another challenge is that of competition in terms of quality of production compared to what is obtainable elsewhere. To achieve a qualitative standard, we have been studying other people’s works, including those that were made here and those that were being made abroad. And we have resolved to produce musical videos like

those obtainable in Nigeria. That has been our aim, and that is what we are going to give to our fans.

Albums released We have just released our first audio album into the market. It has 12 tracks and is titled Gyara Kayanka. We have done the album in such a way that it will fit into our local market, being our first target audience.

We have also finished working on the video, which we also hope to release into the market soon.

In a nutshell, we have only one album out now.

Why we are not into Hausa movie songs Though we have been in the music industry for long, we deliberately avoided Hausa movie songs. This is because, to us, singing for movies can only make a musician dependant on others. Our fear is: when those controlling the movie industry decide that they have had enough of such musicians, where would they go? No doubt, there are good talents in that field, but their lifespan in the business is not guaranteed.

Look around you, how many voices making waves years back can you still find in the industry? Only few, if you ask me. We want to be independent and have total control over our music.

We want to remain relevant in the music industry for as long as time would allow us. We have a focus and we want to see that we actualise that focus.

Awards won so far It is sad to state here that artists are not rated based on the awards they won; rather, they are being rated by the wealth they are able to accumulate.

This is unlike what obtains in advanced places where you can only be seen as a successful artist if you have won as many awards as possible. We are glad to state here that even before releasing our first album we were nominated for many awards. And we have won many of them.

For instance, we won the Drop the MIC award organised by a Ghanaian entertainment firm in 2010.

We also won a Gold Medal award during the Ranar Mawaka organised by famous Hausa singer, Aminu Ladan Abubakar under the Hikima da Taguwa. We were also nominees at the 2013 MTN/Kanny award, among others.

Marital status We are not married, and we are not into any serious relationship for now.

Our musical career is our number one priority, though we hope to get married someday.

THE KWASEKUHAN MARRIAGE DANCE IN BENUE

I

n every marriage there is an artistic celebration. In Tiv land in Benue State, every bride engages in a dance immediately she is brought to the groom’s place.

This dance is called Kwasekuhan or Kwasegeren, which literally means celebrating the bride.

The Kwasekuhan marriage dance is performed immediately a bride is brought to the house of the groom’s age-mate or the groom’s house. This dance is the most common and most important cultural dance in Tiv land.

Whoever married but did not host it is usually disregarded in the community. The dance is also an honour to the bride. It is an artistic way of welcoming her to her new home and getting her acquainted with the environment.

Thus, failure to host a marriage dance for a bride is a shameful thing for her. It disallows her from holding her head high among her fellow women. This dance is therefore a necessary tradition. Indeed, it is impossible to think of marriage without it.

The dance usually takes place at two settings. First, it is done in the house of an age-mate or distant relative of the groom to whose house the groom takes his wife for that purpose. The bride passes the night there but hardly sleeps at night because singing and dancing will be on until dawn. There will be more of singing, drumming and dancing when the bride will be taken to the groom’s house in the evening of the following day after the marriage.

Brides are customarily brought home on the evening when people have taken their dinners and are relaxing outside before going to sleep. This is done when the town-

crier cri er goes goes out and an announces announce the wedding of the said couples. Thee an announcement is called “angwe,” meaning tiding. The “angwe” is the Tiv traditional system of communication, specifically for marriage.

The announcer always goes ahead of the people, bringing the bride to the groom’s house to announce the nuptial news to the villagers.

The concluding part of the announcement is usually done by the group, made up mostly of women and girls accompanying the bride. This group starts performing some nuptial poems right there on the way. People from surrounding compounds now rush to the road where the angwe was heard and join the party. Others go to the house of the groom and wait there, singing and dancing.

They know the groom by the names in the angwe. For example, the announcer will call out the name of the groom and those of the groom’s parents. This way, it is not difficult to trace the groom’s house.

The instruments popularly used for the marriage are the Indyer or Ilyu (jumbo or medium-size) slit-log drums, the open-ended Gbande drum, the doubleended Genga drum, the Kwen metal gong, the Gida woodwind, the Tsough rattles, etc. These instruments notwithstanding, singing is the most important aspect of the Tiv marriage dance. From there, people will dance and be merry, with many visitors coming to congratulate the newly wedded couple and wish them well.

y all standards, ugu leaves are nutritious specie of vegetables. It has been found out that ugu, also known as fluted pumpkin, help to enhance the formation of healthy red blood cells, which help to improve the blood level.

Mrs Sarah Abagai, head of the Dietetics Department, National Hospital, Abuja, corroborated this. “Ugu is another rich vegetable, so we ask people to take it to get more blood. It gives you lots of iron; that is why it is good for the blood. There is calcium, higher proportions of iron and folic acid. You find them in large proportions in ugu,” Abagai said.

It is for this reason that medical experts prescribe ugu for pregnant women and people who have lost so much blood for one reason or the other.

Results have shown that people who resort to taking ugu to boost their blood levels gain sufficient blood level in a short period.

It has been found that ugu is also rich in protein. The high protein content in leaves of fluted pumpkin can help prevent malnutrition. The high protein content in leaves of plants such as pumpkin could have supplementary effect for the daily protein requirement of the body.

Pumpkin leaves are also the rich source of dietary fibre. Fluted pumpkin is very rich in dietary fibre. It contains Vitamin A for clear visions, even as it protects and keeps our skin fresh. Vitamin C helps to heal wounds and scar. It also contains some minerals like calcium for strong teeth and bones, as well as iron for the muscles.

Pumpkin leaves are good sources of

different types of vitamins and minerals. There are also rich in anti-oxidants such as alpha-carotene and bête-carotene. It has been found out that antioxidants help to slow the ageing process while bêtecarotene anti-oxidants help to restore skin damage caused by the sun.

The leaves are rich in Vitamin E, which promotes a healthier skin, and in turn slows down the aging of the skin. Also, the alpha-carotene antioxidant found in ugu also helps to eliminate free radicals which are responsible for cancer growths.

The Edikang-ikong soup Ingredients: 1kg of pumpkin (ugu) leaves 500g of waterleaves (talinum triangulare) 600g of liver, kidney, kanda, shaki and dry fish Pepper, salt and ground crayfish to taste 200ml palm oil Periwinkle - 1 cup

2 medium balls of onions 2-3 stock cubes Cooking directions • When the meat is done, add a generous amount of palm oil, the crayfish and pepper, and leave to boil for about 10 minutes. The palm oil serves as water in the edika-ikong soup. Try as much as possible to make it the only liquid in the soup.

• Add the periwinkle and waterleaves and leave to cook for another 5 minutes. You may have to cook for less time at this stage so that the waterleaves are not overcooked.

• Now, add the pumpkin leaves and salt to taste.

Stir the contents of the pot very well and turn off the heat. Cover the pot and leave to stand for about 5 minutes.

• The Edikang-ikong soup is ready to be served with wheat or any other meal.
