y popular demand, cape dresses have become the leading gowns. Call it a super woman’s dress if you like; it takes the right detailing and proportion to pull off. With its soaring popularity, you will be making a statement just in time with the right accessories. It should be at its minimum and must not take attention away from the gown. Of course there are rules to the game; you must not take things overboard as it can easily make you look drab. The cape gown is in a league of its own and a show stopper. Just as everyone has their attention fixed on the tailored 1970s, some fashion designers have a different agenda up their sleeves, visiting the 80s and beyond for guidance. mina Sani Bello is the wife of the newly elected governor of Niger State, Alhaji Sani Bello. Amina, who is the daughter of the former military head of state, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, is a medical doctor. The simple and amiable Amina spoke to Tambari about her love for her job, her husband, and how her parents helped to shape her to who she is today.

I was born in Benin in 1973. I spent my childhood in different parts of Nigeria as my father was transferred often. I attended the Federal Government Girls College (FGGC), Bakori for my secondary education and the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria for medical degree. I completed my residency programme at the ABUTH. I also have a master’s in Public Health from the University of Liverpool in the UK.
Fond memories while growing up Going for holidays in Minna, Niger State to spend time with my grandparents was the best times I had. My grandparents were one of the highlights of our growing up years.
Aspirations as a child
I wanted to be a lawyer like my mother. But she encouraged me to take science subjects, which I did. And it just took off from there.
What I took from my parents
I have a bit of both parents, but I think I’m becoming more like my mother every day. My father played an important role in our lives. They both made sure we were on the right path; hence we turned out to be who we are today.
What inspired us to set up Noor Education Foundation
My sisters and I have a non-governmental organisation known as Noor Education Foundation, which, among other things, provides less-privileged children with funds for their education. However, I have always been interested in child and maternal health. So I’m hoping to do something along those lines. I particularly want to see how we can improve our primary health care centres so that good quality health care is available for everyone at all levels.
Motherhood experience
I have three children - two boys and a girl. I had my first son when I was in the medical school. So it was quite difficult combing school and caring for a small baby. But I had a lot of support from my family, which made it easier. Apart from that, and the usual challenges of parenting, being a mother has been the most rewarding experience of my life. My husband made it easy for me to be a wife and mother. He’s extremely supportive and understands when the children need me more. So it works out well.
Meeting my husband
I met my husband through mutual friends in my second year at the university. At that time, marriage was far away from my mind
because I was concentrating hard in medical school. But not long after we met, he made his intentions clear and was persistent enough to get me thinking. I accepted him because I found him to be responsible, kind and funny, but most of all; I liked his liberal way of thinking and dealing with people.
Best part of him
His generosity, thoughtfulness, religious and honesty have always been his best quality. With these qualities, he is the best person anyone can ever wish for.
My role model
My mum, who has always been the backbone of the family, is my role model. The support she gives my dad has endeared us to her the more. I have always looked up to her as my role model.
Happiest moments in life
I am the happiest person when I’m spending time with my family. There is no feeling compared to spending time with your loved ones, especially your family.
My passion
My job, I absolutely love it. My happiest moments are when I finished delivering a healthy baby. I found it very rewarding.
I love relaxing with my family We usually go on outings, or just relax at home watching TV.
My fashion style
Simple and comfortable. As long as I am properly covered, simple and comfortable, I am good to go.

He is very passionate about education. One of the things I know that bothers him is the way the schools are and the joblessness of the youth. We want to stop Nigerians from going abroad for skin treatment Dr M. B. Dan Mallam is a specialist dermatologist and venereologist. He is also the managing director/ chief executive of Niger Med Skincare, Prima Derma Skin, Medi-Spa and Laser Centre in Abuja. The indigene of Malumfashi in Katsina State spoke with Tambari about how the skin should be looked after. What inspired you into becoming a skin specialist? The skin is the mirror of the inside; hence it represents a medium through which a lot of medical, surgical, gynaecological, ophthalmological, psychiatric conditions are diagnosed. They are mainly diagnosed
from symptoms seen on the skin. So it is an integral part of a complete approach to medicine. It is a pleasant field of medicine that relates with all other fields.
How sould one avoid cosmetics that can cause damages to the skin? One can avoid cosmetics that can cause damage by simply avoiding the wrong creams. The irony, however, is that we all know what the wrong creams are, but most people deliberately use them because they can only achieve their objectives with them, not minding the eventual consequences. But I tell my colleagues (dermatologists) that, much as we would want to blame Nigerians for using all the wrong things, or patronising all the wrong (so-called skin experts), we also have ourselves to blame. We have a very serious role to play. We have to provide a veritable professional alternative so that Nigerians can enjoy quality medical attention, just like other parts of the world.
But to do that, we need to be trained, retrained and be committed. We can’t ask Nigerians to stop going to these (so-called skin experts) without giving them an alternative.
People sometimes take prescribed drugs to make their skin glow, is it advisable? By prescribed, you mean you would have seen a doctor as they are the only people allowed to prescribe. Basic principles of maintaining a healthy skin include: avoiding irritants on the skin, regular and proper hydration of the skin, healthy meals, oral hydration, sun protection, avoiding careless and senseless use of questionable skincare products, patronising only skin specialists when you have skin-related complaints, avoiding rumour treatments. Let’s all bear a responsibility of taking good care of our skin as it reflects our inside. A healthy radiant skin boosts your confidence and gives you an inner glow.

I want to know what causes menstrual cramps and the solution to it. Aisha Kazaure, Jigawa State. Menstrual cramps or dysmenorrhea are of two types: primary and secondary. The primary dysmenorrhea starts early in life at menarche or soon after, while secondary dysmenorrhea starts later in life even after one has started childbearing. Causes of the primary type are unexplained in most cases, which also make treatment a challenge. Excessive release of prostaglandin has been implicated in primary dysmenorrhea. Causes or predisposing factors to secondary dysmenorrhea include adenomyosis, endometriosis, fibroid polyps, pelvic inflamatory diseases, among others. Primary dysmenorrhea affects the adolescent mainly, but some may be resolved after the first delivery. Use of analgesics for symptomatic management is the mainstay. For secondary dysmenorrhea, identify the cause and treating it will solve the problem. For example, removal of fibroid polyps will resolve the pains during menstruation.
WHAT IS MRI?
My stomach is swollen. I have taken several medications and done a lot of tests, including X ray, yet the abdominal pains and swelling have persisted. I was told MRI can help. What is it, and where can I do it, please? Aminu, Kontangora Magnetic Resonance (MRI) is a test that “uses a magnetic field and pulses of radio wave energy to make pictures of organs and structures inside the body. In many cases, MRI gives different information about structures in the body “ (WEBMD). It helps to show small mass that could not be seen with common radiological investigation. It is used to locate problems, including cancers in most organs of the body. Quite a number of teaching hospitals in Nigeria have it. Also, a few of reputable private hospitals and diagnostic centres have it. More importantly, I will advise you to see a

APPENDIX, ULCER, TYPHOID, MALARIA, HOOKWORM - AT THE SAME TIME I am surprised about the multiple diagnoses. Do we call it poly diagnosis or what? Most likely, the typhoid, appendix and malaria are diagnosed because some of the symptoms are
similar like fever, headache, vomiting, among others. We have also mentioned several times that typhoid test, commonly called widal test, is not very specific, which makes typhoid an over-diagnosed entity. Medical workers should avoid multiple diagnosis that lead to poly pharmacy prescriptions. Concerning the polycystic ovaries, are you married? Is your menses regular or not? It would have helped if you had mentioned the symptoms you have. If you are not married, be patient till after marriage since quite a high percentage can still conceive normally even with the irregular period. In case there is associated infertility and all other investigations are normal, ovulation induction will solve the problem. The unusual fear of direct association with ovarian cancer is unfounded. I will advise you to remain calm, undue worry worsens hormonal imbalance. If you are overweight, then try to reduce your weight. For more counseling, see a gynaecologist in your area.

She talks about her business which she describes as a complete event solution and a one-stop point for events catering for weddings, corporate events, birthdays for children and adults amongst others.
BY Adie Vanessa Offiong Why did you decide on this business? I attended a funeral and I thought the whole the organisation of the event could have been better packaged and presented. Feeling very uncomfortable and knowing I could do better, I made my input to things and redid some of the things that had been setup. It turned out better put together in the end. I got a lot of encouragement and commendations and was urged to start one of my own, every now and again I would give advice and tips on how to go about packaging events, it suddenly dawned on me that I could start off my own, enjoy giving people quality and class the same way I would want to be entertained, voila, that’s how the idea for Sterling Events began. The company started off by renting marquees, chairs, and kitchenware, these we were able to take across the country and set up for our clients. at the time we were not fully into events management, but we were able to consult to clients and guide them while they employed services of others based on our recommendations. Whatever your fantasies, we’ll plan for you. Our motto is, ‘distinct, classy, always remembered.’ This is a very competitive market. How have you prepared yourself to stay on top of the game? Our aim is excellence for everything we do and attention to the smallest detail for our clients. In as much as we recommend and have our own ideas, we do our best not to let our views overshadow the expectations or requests of our clients. We want them years down the road to say with Sterling Events our dreams came through. We want them to be visible in the final product that we present to them. You may have a client who may not like decorations with flowers and would prefer something more abstract and geometric. We would not then impose flowers on the client because it is trendy and seemingly more acceptable. Rather with our artistic and creative team, would go to the drawing board and come up with a package that suits this personality. What innovations make you stand out? That would be letting out our secret. When the clients come they’ll see what we do differently from others. Balancing colours, shapes and textures are things that designers contend with when it comes to events. How do you manage this? The first thing is that the client gives us their colour themes. Where we see that it may not do justice we offer advice. Sometimes clients are insistent and do not want to change colours, in such cases we could suggest adding another colour that could make the presentation better. Why do you combine ethnic and contemporary designs? We are Africans and many of us like a bit of our culture coming through in all we do. With the diversity and intermarriages, clients want a bit of each culture reflected. I can’t say we experience clash with colours or patterns. What kind of challenges do you contend with? Sometimes a client comes with specifications of what they want. You have agreed and sealed the deal, but then they don’t give you the free hand to run it as you should. Or they keep making changes and in the end it is a far cry from the initial agreement. Where do you see your business in another one or two years? The go- to event place. What kind of services should prospective clients look forward? Asides event advisory and management, we work with our clients to plan their events from scratch. We provide services for all kinds of events including indoor and outdoor catering, venue setting up, decorations, rentals marquees, chairs, tables, kitchenware, accessories and make up as well as consultancy
services. We also design and print programmes and brochures as well as gift items and souvenirs. What is the minimum budget that you can work with? We can work around any budget that is reasonably priced. You don’t need a million naira to have a memorable event. For less we give classy and distinct events. What kind of facilities do you have in place to ensure these services are top notch quality? Before we started, we did a detailed
market survey of what facilities are available with regards the business in Abuja and other cities. This informed the facilities we acquired to run ours to ensure we are better and different. The word ‘wedding’ seems to hike prices. What do you think is responsible? Every bride wants her wedding to be the fairy tale she dreamt of and the things they ask for sometimes are not cheap. That’s what makes prices high. That said, these dreams can be a reality with a good price.

he Yoruba traditional marriage is always a colourful ceremony. A lot of guests are dressed in colourful attires known as aso ebi, just as there is usually a lot of feasting and merrymaking. The ceremony usually takes place in the late afternoon in the bride’s family compound .The evening begins after all the invited guests have gathered. According to Koleosho Hismaheel, the event starts when the groom and his family arrive. They are stopped from entering the bride’s compound by older women who would demand a fee from the groom and his escorts. The groom’s family will have to pay whatever amount they are asked in other to gain entrance. Once the groom and his family are in the compound, the oldest male from the groom’s family who has been appointed as their spokesperson approaches the bride’s father, informing him of their intention. Usually, the request is not stated directly, but stated thus: “We have found a flower in this house that we wish to take home with us.” Hismaheel also noted that the bride’s father sends for other female daughters that he has as the bride. They might be two or three persons presented as the requested bride, but they are rejected by the groom’s family. Rashidat Awoyemi, on the other hand, said after the groom’s family rejects the wrong bride, the right one will be asked to come out with a veil over her face. Once the groom has identified her as the bride they seek, she in turn is now asked if she knows the groom and his family. After she identifies them, she is taken back into the house. On the day of paying the bride price and the
introduction, a man who stands as the bride’s family moderator puts representatives of the groom on a hot seat by asking them some questions. After that, the groom’s presence will be needed and he will come forward and go through the introduction process. When all requirements are met, the groom will then sit on one of the large chairs kept for him and the bride. The bride will be escorted by other young girls, accompanied with singing and dancing as she comes out. She is dressed in the Yoruba traditional attire, adorned with beads. She also goes through few protocols, but money is only given to her in this instance. She will be introduced to the groom’s family as she sits beside the groom. At this juncture, they will be considered as man and wife, and the bride will be asked to display some wifely act by feeding the
groom some cake. And she must do that while kneeling, to the amusement of the guests. The groom then presents the gifts he has brought for the bride along with the bride price (the gifts for the bride are usually items requested in a traditional marriage list given by the bride’s family to the groom. They are gold wristwatches, earrings, wrappers, bags and shoes, as well as foodstuff kolanuts, bag of salts, tubers of yam, alligator pepper and honey, among other things. After the presentation of gifts and bride price, the bride’s parents say prayers to bless the marriage. Merriment continues through the evening as they dance and celebrate their union.

For instance, a powerful antioxidant in grapes, called resveratrol, helps lower your chances of getting a heart disease and premature aging, according to health experts. Mrs. Sarah Abagai, head of Dietetics Department, National Hospital, Abuja, explained further, “The antioxidants present in fruits and vegetables help clear free radicals in the body. Free radicals in the body are the ones that accelerate aging, so eating fruits and vegetables will help clear the free radicals. “Similarly, the antioxidants in colourful vegetables and fruits, such as leafy green vegetables, red tomatoes and carrots, help stop unstable molecules from damaging healthy cells. So at each meal, fill about half your plate with fruits and vegetables. Try and eat five to nine servings a day.’’ Again, health experts say three particular antioxidants - Vitamin C, zinc, and betacarotene help protect your vision from macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness after age 64. If you already have macular degeneration, eating foods with these nutrients may slow its progress. Dark green, leafy vegetables like spinach are great sources. When the body is cleansed of all waste matter, it slows down the level of aging. Dairy products The calcium and fortified Vitamin D in dairy foods are crucial to strong bones. They help prevent osteoporosis, for instance. Include 3 cups of low-fat milk, yogurt, or other dairy products a day. By choosing low-fat instead of regular dairy, you will help keep your cholesterol levels in check, making you less likely to get heart disease. Reduce your intake of salt Eating too much salt can raise your blood pressure. Over time, high blood pressure can damage many parts of your body, including your kidneys and eyes. So limit your intake of salt. Take about 1 teaspoon of table salt throughout your entire day. If you have high blood pressure and are 51 or older, or have diabetes or chronic kidney disease, you should eat even less.

Fish pepper soup INGREDIENTS: • A handful of pepper soup seasonings and pods • 5 dried scent leaves (efirin) or bush basil • A handful of freshly chopped basil • 2-3 tablespoons pepper soup mix depending on brand and chilli content • 1 large ripe tomato, finely chop • 1 medium fresh bream

• 1-2 serving spoons vegetable oil • 3 seasoning cubes • 1 litre water
DIRECTION: 1. Wash fish in water with a squeeze of lemon. Cut into chunks. Drain and rub with some salt then set aside. 2. In a large pot, fry the chopped tomatoes in oil for about 2 minutes,

then add 1 litre of water and bring to the boil. Add the pepper soup mix, pepper soup pods, scent leaves and seasoning cubes. Stir and leave to boil (under moderate heat) for 10 minutes to allow spices to infuse. Turn off heat, allow to stand for 5 minutes and sieve off the sediments (the spices). 3. Return to the gas cooker and continue to cook under low heat. Add fish, cover and simmer for 5 minutes adding some hot water to adjust consistency. Add salt to taste. Add a handful of chopped basil. Stir and simmer for 2-5 minutes or until fish is cooked. Serve hot.

any people struggle with oily or greasy skin, especially on their faces. An oily skin can be frustrating, especially when it causes other skin problems like acne and spots. An oily skin occurs when the sebaceous glands produce more oil than usual, leading to an imbalance in your system. Some excessive oil production is hereditary, but other factors that can lead to an oily skin are stress, hormonal shifts, high humidity, travel, pollution, certain cosmetic products, birth control pills, poor diet, and improper skin care. If you suffer from excessively oily skin, there are some simple tips you can follow to help reduce or even resolve the issue and improve the health of your skin. Wash your face at least twice daily Wash it only twice a day: in the morning and before you sleep. Washing your face too often prompts the sebaceous glands to produce even more oil. The oil in your face (technically known as sebum) is there because it lubricates and protects your skin.
Use warm water Every time you wash your face, try to use warm water because it relaxes your face and treats it gently. Cold or hot water dries out the skin. Use facial care products Use cleansers that are specifically designed for oily or acne-prone skin. You can also use natural products you can find in your kitchen, like honey. Use oil-free moisturisers and sunscreen. Moisturisers can help protect your face from oil and the sun, but make sure you are using oil-free products, or the problem may be exacerbated. Drink plenty of water Hydration is important for keeping your skin healthy. Drink 8 glasses of water or about 2 liters of water daily. Stay away from carbonated beverages or alcohol - they will make the problem worse.
Use a gentle facial scrub twice a week This will not only clear away dead skin cells, but also help rejuvenate your face and allow clean healthy skin to shine through. Reduce intake of sugar, salt, and fried food Your diet influences the health of your skin. The healthier you eat, the healthier you look. Eat healthy foods Eat plenty of fresh fruits and green vegetables. Consume low fat products, protein rich foods, and whole grains. Fish contains oil that will help your skin look good as well. This does not mean that the oil you eat is the oil that is produced from your skin. An oily food does affect your skin and overall health in general.
