Advocating for social justice interview by AMINA ALHASSAN & PRISCA EKOKUJE-EMADU

aced with challenges while growing up as lonely girl amongst seven other female siblings, Hajiay Limota Goroso -Giwa had to take the bulls by the horn to become a parent to her siblings at a young age. Her young life opened her to reality that life wasn’t a bed of roses. Almost dropping out of school she took it upon herself to educate herself, her siblings to be self-dependent. Today she takes pleasure in advocating for the rights of women within and outside Nigeria. Tambari had a chat with her as she opened up on the dark tunnel of her life and how she crossed it to be a role model in the society today.

LIMOTA GOROSO-GIWA //
Background I attended my father’s school in Ilorin called Iwani Nursery, Day and Primary School. It was founded by my father in the 50s, and he brought us from Ghana to attend the school. The school is presently a public school as my father donated it to the government. That was the legacy he wanted to leave behind. I also attended Government Secondary School Afa in Afa local government area of Kwara State. After my secondary school, I went to Kwara State polytechnic to read Secretarial Studies and became a professional secretary. I also attended Kaduna State polytechnic and read Public Administration, after that I worked for some time and then went back for my higher diploma and post graduate diploma at the Kwara State Polytechnic, I majored in Public Policy and Analysis. I worked for a while before I went to European University for Peace, where I got a masters degree in Peace and Conflict Studies, majoring on Peace and Security. Again I worked for a while after my masters before going to Columbia University in the United States of America were I majored in Human Rights and SIPA School New York (Swap international and public administration). I worked for a while again and then went to the United Kingdom where I got my doctorate degree in Philosophy. Flair for women rights advocacy The flair for women advocacy came from my experience growing up as a young girl. In our time, it was not important for a woman to attend school, all that was thought for us was getting married, having children and becoming a housewife. My dad loved education but was not around to take care of us; he dedicated his life and all the money he made in Ghana and Ivory Coast as an Islamic scholar to build a school in Ilorin. It is unfortunate that none of his children was able to attend higher institution during his life time. The highest some of his children attained before he died was being in secondary school. So I thought that for a man who integrated Islamic and western education, how would a child of such man not be able to get quality education? Secondly, we are many girls in the family. I am the first, and I have six sisters and one brother, the boy later died. The issue was that we were just girls who people thought would not be able to carry on the family name. I remember my mum telling me that at a young age I promised her that I would do everything that a man can do to make the family’s name great. Today, I have not changed my name, I am been referred to as Goroso Giwa which is my father’s name. The name has a combination of his title, his grandfather’s name and his nick name. Coming from a girl stereotyped background, I suffered a

I SUFFERED A LOT OF DISCRIMINATION. I STRUGGLED TO EDUCATE MYSELF AND GET ALL I WANTED TO SUCCEED IN LIFE WITHOUT A MOTHER AND FATHER, I CAN’T MENTION ANYBODY WHO ASSISTED ME IN SCHOOL, I TRAINED ALL MY SIBLINGS AND TODAY THEY ARE ALL GRADUATES. I MADE SURE I TOOK ALL MY SISTERS IN THE JOURNEY OF LIFE lot of discrimination. I struggled to educate myself and get all I wanted to succeed in life without a mother and father, I can’t mention anybody who assisted me in school, I trained all my siblings and today they are all graduates. I made sure I took all my sisters in the journey of life. That was one reason I didn’t change my name, I wanted to paint my father’s name in gold Life lessons learnt The experience of life is in a different dimension. What would be would be! No matter how one strives, I believe there is destiny. One’s destiny may be late but it will surely come to pass. When my father was dying he insisted that even if all of his children could not be educated, I should be educated because he believed I will be a role model in the society. So life has taught me that destiny can be delayed but it will surely come to pass. Aspirations as a child I loved law and wanted to be a lawyer. I love to advocate for people. I didn’t have the opportunity to go straight into the university so I couldn’t study law but my daughter is in Law School. When I went to Columbia University, they said I have to study advocacy in a law school because our department is attached to law and I had to major j in advocacy. y Though it doesn’t make me a lawyer which means I can’t go to court but it still makes me an advocate of human rights and I can preach for justice because I have been trained to do so. Childhood memories I remember in my house there was
always cooking, with people trooping in to see my dad to ask for help, for political meetings or to book for his transport services that goes from West Coast to Accra-Ghana. I remember people singing songs of praise anytime they come to our house. I was young then but I enjoyed it, I also remember that there were a lot of red caps and umbrellas in our house which was the symbol of their party. Another thing I remember is that wherever I went to, people told me I looked like the party manager; and then they would ask if I was the daughter of the party manager. I also remember that the symbol of their party then was a thumb up with utterances like ‘give us light’‘Give us water’ Goroso. When my dad went for hajj, I remember schools and people lined up from our street to the house to welcome the man who has travelled by road to Mecca. I was carried by my uncle on his shoulder to welcome my dad. When my dad died all these went, and we had to start all over again. One very challenging thing in life is that it is not good to be an orphan. When I grew up and realized my dad was a famous person, I asked why he gave me to other people and treated me as a commoner. My uncle told me then that my father has seen my bright future and wanted me to learn things the hard way so that I would be able to overcome the challenges of life. He gave me to other people so that I won’t know where I came from. Husband and I My husband and I stayed in the ssame neighborhood when I was young; young I looked up to him as a brother and never thought thoug I would marry him. I was in form four at the time tim going to form five, when he told me he liked me m and would want to marry me, so anytime I saw s him I ran away. I never wanted to marry someone who was so already married, so I kept running away from him. But today we are happily married and have five children (a set of triplets and twins). twin Most loved gift from him The best gift he has given me is m my freedom. He knew and saw the ambition in m me and never bothered me because he knew I would not blemish my name and that of the family. He gave me freedom and the chance to be authentic. The reality is that women have to be authentic and original, a woman can make herself up to be beautiful but she has to be original. Men are not or concerned with wi our makeup but how en enterprising you are, one who will assist in the home and also how you socialize without blemishing with your you name. Nigerian men me of today want a woman who would w also al put something on the table and share sh responsibilities and an not a dependent woman. de

CO V E R I N T E R V I E W // LIMOTA GOROSO-GIWA Joy of motherhood My triplets and twins have brought immerse joy to my life. They are a blessing to me. When I see women begging with twins and triplets I know the reality because I have them too. I urge people to support them. There were times you don’t have enough food to give them. If I could be in that position with my education and status, think about those who have no means of survival. The irony is that initially when you have them you are in pain but when they start growing up, things would just start working for you because they are God’s blessings. Multitasking being a wife, mother and an activist I come from a strong background where I had to send myself and siblings to school. Even though I was not rich I had to endure it because death took my parents away at a young age. The challenges I faced brushed me up for future challenges. When my sisters were living with me, men used to think that I was second hand woman because they thought that if they married me they would be inheriting my responsibilities. They thought my sisters where my children. I had to cater for them with my one hundred naira salary because they were young when my father died and my mother couldn’t cope alone. Women’s role in the society In today’s reality, women should do the same thing as the men are doing in terms of gender balance. What I mean is that when a man is going to school, the woman should do same, when a man is supporting the family, the woman should also assist. A woman should also cater for the up-keep of her children because they are her tomorrow. A woman should be hard-working even more than a man, prayerful and kind to other people. Awards I have had a number of awards but one which remains prominent is my nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize for women leaders of the world in 2005. The Nobel Peace Prize is different from
A WOMAN SHOULD ALSO CATER FOR THE UP-KEEP OF HER CHILDREN BECAUSE THEY ARE HER TOMORROW. A WOMAN SHOULD BE HARDWORKING EVEN MORE THAN A MAN
the one we all know, the United Nations just decided that they needed to award women who have excelled in their various careers and who may likely be Nobel Prize winners in the future, so I was among the 1000 women. In 2001, I was awarded by Asoka Fellow Award committee based in Washington D.C for being the best social entrepreneur in Nigeria. The award came with money and this award paved a way for me to do something for women, so I took the money and went to Ilorin and opened a computer training institute which was free. I got the Rare Gem award in 2003 by the Institute of International Affairs Lagos. g Mode of relaxation on My major challengee is not knowing how to relax because I travel vel from one place to the other for work. I am always on the move, though when en I need to be calm I listen to Dollyy Parton’s song ‘coat of many colours’ urs’. The song is an inspirational song which helped me grow. Anytime I listened tened to the song, it gave me strength to overcome every challenge I faced and nd I realized that the rich and white also cry. So when I faced challenges, enges, I just tell them that Dollyy Parton has said it all. My children en even know that when I am angry, they can play the song ong and it will calm me. I also so watch films about injustice ce and how God prevailed d at the end for the maltreated ated person(s) and a film m where one moves from grass to grace. Beauty Routine Nothing in particular, ar, I never depart from m my shea butter and d coconut oil. Keeping Fit To be honest I don’t exercise, I am always too busy and on the move to o have time for keeping ing fit. Best travel destination nation The land of the free, e, ‘America’! Then the second place is Nigeria, geria, nothing compares to home at the end off everything. Nigeria is a unique place no matter atter how we want to look ok at it. Best food In those days it used ed to be ‘Amala and ewedu’ but today it has changed because everyone is becoming more health conscious. So I am trying to stick to wheat meal.l. I also love ‘ogi’ (pap).). Give it to me at any time and d I am good to go. Fashion style

The second question was like the first and the diagnosis is vaginal candidiasis. It may not be enough to take vaginal pessaru but in combination with the cream and sometimes the oral drugs. One of the main challenge of unresponsive medications could be fake or substandard drug. In your case since it stopped during medications then it may not be fake drug. Your spouse will need to go for treatment too. In case of habits like douching you have to stop. People with abuse of antibiotic use may also be prone to recurrent candidiasis. Immunosupresive state may also lead to recurrent vaginal candidiasis. You need to see a gynaecologist for proper treatment.

Rock your cooking world with Creative
Designs
by MULIKATU MUKAILA
E
veryone knows that a lot of activities take place in the kitchen and this is the more reason your kitchen needs to be both beautiful and functional. This raises a double challenge of dos and don’ts in kitchen layout and design. Regardless of the kitchen design and style, organization and layout are essential in kitchen arrangement. One important aspect we all need to maintain is not to waste storage spaces. Kitchens typically contain lots of stuff, so with this, we should learn how to create space for either food or utensil storage. Finding a home for your kitchen stuff while keeping it easily accessible can be a tricky proposition. Items that you most likely use occasionally shouldn’t be a distraction in your kitchen, instead select all you need regularly and arrange them properly either on a rack and assemble the rest of the occasional items that you wouldn’t be needing in a cabinet in such a manner that it will neither be an obstruction to you but a decoration piece.
Also, a good ventilation system will help improve the quality of indoor air and also help keep your kitchen cleaner. This will also help extend the life of your appliances. If you have a kitchen that opens to a living area or family room, they will make life easier, cleaner and more pleasant for everyone. Don’t ignore your recyclables. Lastly, it is very important never to ignore your trash can to avoid smell and bacteria in the kitchen. These days, with the advent of recycling, dealing with trash in kitchen arrangement has gone beyond sticking a bin under the sink. As recycling is here to stay, be prepared to manage your trash efficiently and incorporate trash sorting bins into your kitchen arrangement. Overrall, our kitchen arrangement tells a lot about us. So, why don’t you rock your world with unique and creative designs which will leave a lasting impression of not just the taste of your food but the feel and look of your kitchen.

here is nothing better than having the whole day to yourself at home to pay attention to your whole body by giving it a special treatment. You don’t have to go to a spa before you get these special body treats; a full spa day treatment at home without any distractions will also make your body feel very special and relaxed. Giving yourself a day to relax and pampering yourself is somewhat necessary when you are constantly on the go or working all the time. All you need is to set aside just one day in a month when the only priority is you.
Here are four beauty treatments you can do at home and not spend a dime on anything extra. 1. First, get a large pot of your favorite tea brewing from any decaffeinated options and relax while you sip on a warm drink as you are going to hydrate yourself all day long. 2. Manicure and pedicure: Remove that old nail polish and treat your nails to a strengthening nail soak using milk and honey as your hands and feet relax for few minutes. Milk has lactic acid to gently slough away dead skin cells, while the calcium strengthens nails. Honey acts as a humectant (moisturiser) to draw moisture to skin.

3. Do a facial mask out of any natural ingredient available: A banana and honey facial mask is suitable for most skin types (dry, normal, oily) and is easily made. Let the mask sit on the face for about 10-15 minutes on a pre-cleansed face and wash off with warm water. Other options are using yogurt with honey (which gently exfoliate and pulls in moisture with honey) as well as strawberry mixed with oatmeal meal mask which draws out toxins and offerss a more fruity peel action to the skin. Theree are plenty of options in your cupboard d for a nourishing face mask.
a bit of vanilla extract and bubble balls, you can create a soothing milk bath that will leave your skin smooth and moisturized, then sit back and relax with the yummy aroma of all the natural ingredients you have used rubbing the warm water over your skin.
