BOLA C. ONIGBOGI //

CO V E R I N T E R V I E W GOING BACK TO SCHOOL, FAR AWAY FROM MY FAMILY, WASN’T THAT EASY. BUT ONE THING I REALISED WAS THAT WHEN YOU HAVE A PASSION FOR SOMETHING, NO MATTER WHAT YOU FACE ALONG THE LINE TO REALISE IT, YOU DON’T GIVE UP. INSTEAD, YOUR PASSION SHOULD BE FUELED BY DETERMINATION TO SUCCEED IN LIFE, AND THAT WAS WHAT I FACED AT THAT TIME

Background I am an indigene of Ilesa L.G.A in Osun State. I was born into the family of the Loro gbenla’s family in the late 50’s. I started my primary school education at the Holy Trinity Primary School in Ilesha and proceeded to the Ilesha Grammar School. I graduated in 1977. Thereafter, I proceeded to the Adeyemi College of Education which was then an affliate of the University of Ife and read education. After my NYSC programme with the Baptist Academy in Lagos State, I joined the Lagos State Teaching Service Commission and I was posted to a primary school in Lagos where I worked for about 8 years before I voluntarily resigned because I believed that teaching wasn’t too challenging for me and I am someone who loves to work rigorously. I joined the insurance industry and in my quest for excellent performance, I registered with the London School of Insurance and went ahead to pursue the professional course which I came out with excellent grades and became an associate member of the Chartered Insurance Institute of London (ACII London). Before then, after my resignation as a teacher, I joined the insurance broking firm where I was working and, at the same time, registered for the professional examination and later travelled to England. After my return, I continued my work with the brokering firm and I have been in the practice for 23 years now. Along the line, I set up my own insurance brokering firm where I am the C.E.O/MD and I am also a member of the governing board of the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Industries and auditor of the council. I am an associate member of the

Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria( ACIN), a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Brokers of Nigeria ( FCIB), Member of the faculty of Insurance Broking of the Chartered Insurance Institute of London, Fellow of the Institutes of Corporate Administration of Nigeria, Chairman of the Professional Insurance Ladies Association ( North Chapter) MD/ C.E.O of CBO Insurance brokers Ltd, Vice Chairman of the Horizon Group of Companies, whose member firms are Horizon Stockbrokers Ltd( Member of the Nigeria Stock Exchange) and also first female president of the Hotel Owners Forum Abuja (HOFA). Fondest Memories I have a lot. For those of us who were born at the time, life was very interesting, everything was easy, children, play freely with everyone in the neighborhood, unlike these days that we have to cage our children so as to prevent them from any harm. So life was very interesting. My mother was a very hard working woman and she catered for the family. Aspirations as a child I wanted to become a nurse because, in those days, nurses used to appear very smart and they had the zeal to care for people. I always told myself that one day, I myself will become one so I can also care for the sick people. I fell in love with nursing but during our youth days, there was nothing like career counseling which we have today. So, what happened was that my elder sister

applied to Adeyemi College of Education and got admitted and when it was my turn to apply, I asked her what procedures she took, she said she will get me the form and that was how I found myself in the teaching line. Greatest achievement so far I thank God for where He has placed me today. I have achieved so many things in life. Motherhood experience It is every woman’s dream to become a mother and see her kids grow into adults and even stand on their own. I was very happy when I had my first child, it was a girl and I was so excited. Challenges of life I would say when I decided to change my profession, it wasn’t that easy because I was already married and had kids to look after and working at the same time. Going back to school, far away from my family, wasn’t that easy. But one thing I realised was that when you have a passion for something, no matter what you face along the line to realise it, you don’t give up. Instead, your passion should be fueled by determination to succeed in life, and that was what I faced at that time. I had to leave behind my two-year-old baby at home and travel to England to pursue academic aspiration. But I said to myself, this is what I want and I must get there and I went ahead to achieve it.

Philosophy of life In life, we should always focus on getting what you want and you must show hands of fellowship to those people who can never come back to say thank you such as the less privileged. Be kind to them and that is the reason I joined the International Women Wheel after I had looked through their prospectus, knowing that they cater for widows, orphans and less privileged in the society and we are doing a lot. Advice from mum that stuck Mothers tend to be closer to their children than fathers because they are always with them at home. So, they watch you closely and have an idea of what is going on in your life. My mum will always tell us that hard work pays and we shouldn’t cut corners. Life lessons Life itself is a lesson because every day of your life, you see things that you pick a lesson from and hold on to it. Also, my parents taught us to believe in ourselves and once you believe in yourself, you will be able to pursue your goal in life, follow the path that is set for your goal and achieve it. Advise to women I would rather say that women should be focused and follow their dream with the belief that they would achieve their goal. If you have a passion for something, try and follow it with your whole mind, body and soul and then you will find success at the end of the day. Role models My mother is my role model because she helped in moulding my character and made me whom I am today. I also admire Oprah Winfrey because she is a strong woman and she had mentored so many people. Legacies I want to be known as that person who has passion to assist the less privileged and people who are helpless, as they, too, should feel the sweeter part of life.

It is something som that can reflect into light easily ea as it gets a shiny effect on you. Most M people don’t know the power and glamour of silver in fashion that is why they dwell mostly on gold jewelries. Most diamonds come tagged

he foetus blood supply is from the foetus itself. But the baby gets its nutrients and minerals needed for growth, formation of organs and formation of blood from the mother through the placenta exchange system. It must be stated clearly that the blood of the mother and the baby does not mixed due to placenta barrier. Despite the placenta barrier necessaries like oxygen, carbon dioxide. minerals, glucose, amino

acids pass through by methods like diffusion, osmosis, perfusion, enzymatic carriers among others. It is important that the blood of both mother and baby does not meet because fetal blood cells are quite different in structures due to intrauterine function compared to adult blood cells. Also if the blood of the mother mixes with the child and if there are incompatible there will be autolysis which may result in fetal death.

My wife’s vagina is seriously smells with some white particles coming out of her private part after intercourse. Both of us experience itching afterwards. What should I do? Moses, Abuja

From the above there is a mixed infection including candidiasis because of the whitish discharge with itching and bacteria infection as evident with the foul smell. The two of you need to see a gynaecologist, Laboratory tests like endocervical and high vaginal swab for microscopy culture and analysis which will be done after examination. Both of you will need antibiotics and anti fungal. Pelvic infections during the reproductive age is not to be taken with levity. It should be treated promptly, aggressively and adequately. The couple must be treated together, it is unfortunate that some partners especially male insist on not taking drugs since they have no symptoms. They could be asymptomatic carriers. In-fact, a partner who is asymptomatic, might be the source of the infection. If one partner is treated and the other not treated, there is likely to be re infection from the untreated partner. Also there is this wrong notion that maybe the other partner contacted the disease from extramarital affairs. This is not true most of the time. Pelvic infections and pelvic inflammatory disease could be endogenous. It could be a resurgent of latent infections of improperly treated infections. Just as much as caution is needed, trust and understanding are also needed in this circumstances.

ome people will look at the idea of an outdoor seat outs in your home as irrelevant and waste of resources. But on the contrary, an outdoor seat out is meant to make you feel relaxed whenever you are bored with the wall of your home. The foundation of the seat out pouches could be made out of either furniture or cotton tents which help to give a shield from the sun. The seating arrangements could be that of a palour or a dining setting as you find a strategic position outside your home to fix it which could either be your corridor, close to a pool or somewhere that wouldn’t be obstructed by anything or anyone. Apart from making you feel relaxed within a natural and free environment, the seat out pouches adds beauty to your home, especially when it is set up your garden. Also, when coming up with an outdoor seat out, bright colours of pouches as well as throw pillows should be used as they help to add details to the whole setting. If you are using plain woods, try and incorporate colours to your idea of pouches as they help brighten the whole atmosphere. Go from sweaty to scenty by PRISCA EMADU

D

o you know the type of feeling you get when your body is sticky, dirty from dried sweat and you feel uncomfortable and can hardly wait to take a shower? This same feeling is what your hair and scalp go through when it is sweaty, itchy and smelly. Many women have sweaty scalp or easily sweat in their hair and find it hard to get rid of it. This can be very frustrating, especially when you just got a new hairdo. One of the many reasons, asides hot weather, which causes a woman to have a sweaty hair, is having a workout or after visit to the gym. Remember that the scalp is skin, and just like every part of your body that has skin, it must be cleaned on a regular basis to avoid build up in the pores. If your hair is sweaty it can cause your hair to be dehydrated and polluted.

Here are easy tips to care for a sweaty hair. Shampooing: This is the best way to care for a sweaty hair, you don’t have to wait

TAMBARI OCTOBER 11, 2015

till your regular day of washing your hair before you wash your hair, if you notice it is sweaty, you wash it, so it doesn’t generate smell that can be offensive to perceive. If you easily have sweaty hair, air it when you get a chance, especially if you tie it often. Visit your hair stylist regularly to help wash, treat, and style your hair to give it that healthy look. On cases when you can’t shampoo, you can immediately blow dry your hair concentrating on the nape of your neckline and around the hair. When the hair is dry, you add styling cream throughout the hair, then blast it with heat from your dryer, while smoothing and combing back. Note: The last two tips are to hold back the sweat and smell on the hair, pending when you wash the hair with shampoo.

DO YOU KNOW... WHEN YOU SWEAT, YOUR HAIR BECOMES DEHYDRATED AND BRITTLE, CAUSING AGING DAMAGE, WHICH CAN SHORTEN THE LIFE OF THE HAIR STRANDS.

TRADITIONAL HAIRSTYLES //

C U LT U R E

Traditional bridal hairstyles and their significance I by ZULEI MOHAMMED

n some parts of Nigeria, it is common to see people having two weddings-the traditional wedding and the religious one. The traditional wedding is rooted in the Nigerian culture which varies from region to region. One eye-catching part of the traditional wedding is the hair styles worn by the brides. These hairstyles signify different meanings, based on the cultural practice of the people concerned. For instance, among the Edo and Igbo people, the bridal hairstyle is usually woven with a lot of coral beads, depending on the bride and her custom. The hair style can range from very simple, with a few coral beads, to a very intricate type, especially for Edo brides. The beads worn on the hair signifies her importance and also showcases the joy the bride and the family feels for that day. The traditional Efik bride wears her hair braided long for her wedding. Her hair is adorned with extravagant gold hair combs as a final decorative touch which accentuates her beauty. According to the Efik, hair is very important such that in the olden days, the Efik woman regarded her hair as a symbol of feminity therefore it was forbidden to cut it. Nowadays, they just use weave to capture the same long look. As for the Kanuri bride,

the hair must be worn loose before the wedding day in order for the groom’s aunties to wash it. Then, the bride is made to perform ablution, followed by the women blessing her. Afterwards, she is given the permission to weave her hair in (Kleasku style) front and back style. Looking at the various customs and practices of different cultures, one common feature that comes to mind is the significance of the woman’s hair during her wedding, which is evident in all the cultures. As they say, the hair crowns the beauty of a woman and she wouldn’t want to take chances with it on her wedding day.
