CAN I USE CLOMID

I just began seeing my period. Doc. Please can I use clomid? Any effect? It’s been three months after my last miscarriage and I am 37plus. I am becoming anxious. Chinwe Not all women should take clomid. The fact that you were pregnant is an evidence of being fertile. Not everybody should take Clomid. I can understand your anxiety because of the age. But remember undue anxiety also can lead to hormonal imbalance thereby affect fertility.

Pls help me Doctor. Five years ago, I had a very awful situation which made me cry and which made me have severe headache and chest pains. My eyes, ears and head have changed its normal function and many tests have been done but all negative. This happened to me since when I was 17 years and I have taken several drugs and the pains have stopped, but whenever I’m in a sad situation I feel the same. Amina From the description the headache and chest pains occur only when in a sad mood, therefore it is likely to be psychological. I will encourage you to see a psychologist or psychiatrist. Despite this it may be necessary for you to do a complete check up with a physician. Tests, to be done include echocardiogram or ECG and EEG. This is to rule out any pathological process.

PLEASE, HELP US!

Please help me sir, my problem started since November 2015 after my wife was operated for myomectony and appendicectomy, and after operation menstruation was initially irregular, and now delayed. We have visited some general hospitals & specialist hospitals, their lab result is all negative and no menstruation for two years now. Please, help us! Maxwell, Taraba state How old are you? YEMISI DOOSHIMA SUSWAM // You make being a wife, mother and career woman sound so easy. How do you handle it? I know that there’s nothing you can do without God; with God everything is possible, no matter how tasking. I will not deceive you by telling you that it’s easy. It is not. But it is possible. When God gives you a level of responsibility, he will also equip you to deliver on that responsibility. However, I feel flattered by your assessment, and I hope I’m not failing God. Because ultimately, it is God that made it possible for me to be a mother in the first place andit is he that made it possible for me to be a career woman. As a matter of fact, it was a burning drive in me; to go all the way in the path of a career, and to be the best that I can in the home front. So at the home front, you discover that there has to be determination; you must decide what you want to be, make up your mind what you want out of life. I want the best for my family, and I want to be the best that I can to my society so that posterity will judge me fairly. You’ve ventured into a male dominated career and made a name for yourself. What are the challenges you faced as a female architect? Well,it isn’t easy. But right from school, I was the only female student in the architecture department in my set. We were 14 that enrolled but by the time we graduated, we were only five. All eyes were on me from the go, so I knew I had to be the best. I knew I had to be able to defend every action of mine, so that prepared me for what I came out and met out there in the field of practice. So, having gone through that challenge as a student, I came out prepared, very groomed for the challenges ahead. It’s truly a male dominated profession. But you know, it takes a lot of hard work, a lot of time must be given to it and it takes extraordinary strength for you not to fail at the home front. Men can get away with it. But by and large, talking about the practice of architecture, you will find out that the challenges are enormous. Some people doubt the capabilities of a woman even though she has all it takes to execute the job. Very few would want to give it to a woman because they need a meticulous master piece and believe a woman will be careful enough to execute that. When it comes to the nitty gritty of the finishing, women should take over, because we have the eyes for details, colour and finesse. The challenges that we face in the en are manmade, m nmad ma ad de, practice of architecture as women ould overcome overcom me and they are limiting us.We should them. ob e Did you always have a passion to be an architect? ng about Well, I didn’t grow up thinking th, I grew up p,a ,ass architecture. Bracing the odds in the world of architecture Interview by AMINA ALHASSAN & HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU Mrs. Yemisi Dooshima Suswam is the former First Lady of Benue State and the CEO of All Purpose Shelters Limited (APSL), her own architectural company. She has had decades of experience in her profession and has managed to juggle her duties as a CEO, a mother and practicing architect very well. In this interview, she talks on how she has stayed on top despite all the odds and also, an insight to a side of her that we’ve never seen before. desire, but at the same time wanted to follow my capability. Young ladies who aspire to read architecture are most times indecisive; I also had to battle that feeling. In 300 level, when I had about four more years to go including a year of internship, I thought to myself that I needed to get settled and start a family. So I decided to change my course of study to comuter science. I told my HOD about it and he asked I see him in his office. After I told him my reasons he told me bluntly that he wouldn’t let me go as I was one of his best students in the department and that my reasons weren’t good enough. He encouraged and motivated me to stay on in the department. So I want everyone to mentor the young ladies, to help them to attain the goals they have set for themselves. They should not chicken out because of any feministic reasons. So I’m forever grateful to the HOD for not letting me go. And to my parents, who never opposed me. They were very, very supportive, very encouraging. There were times I had sleepless nights and my family were there to encourage me. Tell us the passion behind starting All Purpose Shelters Limited? p Well, All Purpose Shelters Limited started when In no oti t ceed a lot lot of of people peo eop plle start sttar sta art pr p ojjec o ects ts, construction cons co nstr truc ucti tio io on n noticed projects, wo ork rk, k, bu b uta taba baand ndon nth heem mh alfw alfw al wayy d uee tto u o la llack ack ko work, butabandonthem halfway due off pl plan lan anni ning ni ng. the problem? So I thought professionally, that we should avail ourselves to people who intend to start one project or the other, in terms of construction, so that we can help them. So All Purpose Shelters was given birth to so that we would be able to fill the gaps where there were lapses. We startedb y taking everything professionally. As young as we were, we would go to a site, take measurements and know your location, because a lot of people designedwithout even going to site. Many people have the design on paper, but no site in view. So you design a building and you don’t know where it’s going to sit? So we came in in such a way that if you have a miserable building, we would renovate it for you. We will help you to re-structure, re-model and redesign, that was how it started. We helped people to know that they must know the site where they want to put a building. It’s good to aspire to own properties or buildings, but you must know where you want to put it first, before the design. As CEO All Purpose Shelter Limited, what is your philosophy on leadership? First and foremost, to be a good leader, even in the home or in the society generally, amongst professionals or even market women, you must y If God is leadingg you, y have God leadingg you. you will yo wil wi ill ll not nott go go astray. aasstr tray ay. CO V E R // YEMISI DOOSHIMA SUSWAM thateverybody is respected. As a leader, you must respect the people you’re leading because you are nothing without them. And as a woman youhave an advantage. If you position yourself with the heart of a mother, you take everybody as though they’re your children; if you’re a mother figure to them, they’ll submit to you. So have fear of God, respect for others, have a heart of gold, patience and know that all fingers are not equal. Everybody has something to offer. So that spirit of oneness is what can bind people together. You’re 51 and you still look youthful, what’s your secret? Well I think it’s not so much by what I do, it’s what God has done himself. I eat in moderation, I don’t eat late, I work out, I do spiritual and physical workouts and anytime you go to God in the presence of prayer, you are renewing yourself. How I met my husband I met him through a friend in Kaduna and we were casual friends for two years, the rest is history. Most cherished attribute of his He’s hardworking. That’s what a man needs to do and be. Joys of motherhood Motherhood is a blessing. It is something that is beyond you. You don’t choose but God is the one that does it for you. The fact that God put children in your hand for you to nurture and be mother to, means he has given you some responsibility. So it is a thing of joy to consider. Your joy is seeing them grow and then marvel alone at what God can do because he is the one that made it possible. Fond childhood memories There are so many. It was fun growing up with my siblings and of course in a polygamous home you would expect some sort of rivalry but we didn’t have that. When growing up our parents were very committed to love. I grew up with a man that exhumed love. My late father was an embodiment of love and I fondly remember him everyday. There is hardly a day that goes by that I don’t think about him. A few days ago I was with my siblings and we shared fond memories of a father that was so busy but had time for every little thing. He would tell us stories, take us out, go hunting and those memories can never depart from you. He drives us to church, calls us for prayers each morning at 5am, how can you forget such a father. He was always there to listen. How many fathers do that today; they feel like their finances can take care of them. So I remember a childhood with a family that ate together, prayed together, shared stories together, bared our minds to each other and advised each other as a family. Mum’s advice that stuck with me over the years My mother’s advice that has been a propelling force in everything I do is patience; she exhibited it and lead by example. She was extremely patient. She always told us to strive for the best. When dressing up, dress at your best, when reading, be your best. I remember vividly her visiting me in boarding school and I was crying that I came second in the class and she told me not to cry. That I could make it and before I knew it, when exams came, I came first because of that word of encouragement. My parents taught us to be diligent and vigilant. Those are virtues that I am trying to imparton every child under my household. They also taught us not to depend on people and be able to live our life independently and do things by ourselves. Laziness was not condoned in our set up. Most cherished gift and who it was from I remember receiving a gift from my father on my 10th birthday. He bought the gift on the day I was born. How will I forget such a gift? I saw the receipt and the label and saw the date. Top 5 things on my wish list Firstly I am concerned about my country. My wish for this country islet there be love amongst brothers and sisters. What we are seeing today is unbelievable. For the love of material gains, people

FIRST, LIFE HAS TAUGHT ME TO BE PATIENT AND WAITT ON GOD; NEVER BE IN A HURRY FOR ANYTHING. LIFE HAS ALSO TAUGHT ME S. NOT TO ASSUME THINGS. IT HAS ALSO TAUGHT MEE THAT YOU CANNOT LIVE E. ANOTHER PERSON’S LIFE. YORUBA PEOPLE HAVE A ’T SAYING THAT SAYS ‘DON’T USE ANOTHER PERSON’S RK’ CLOCK TO DO YOUR WORK’ are killing each other. I wish that love will be in the heart of every Nigerian so that together we can build this country, improve it and leave it better than we met it for our children. I wish it would go back to our old ways when the Hausa man is the keeper of his brother, the Igbo man is the keeper of his brother and religious, political and tribal walls were collapsed. I want to see homes restored. There are too many wreckages in families with the husband walking out or the wife walking out. I want to see that the family unit knits properly. It is the nucleus of the society. Favourite music on replay I love instrumental music like jazz and gospel. I love R Kelly though, and back home I love the trumpeter KunleAjayi. You will marvel when he is worshipping God with that trumpet. Favourite fashion item I like bracelets. Favourite quote ‘Inspire to aspire in life’, this is one quote I use most times especially when I talk to people. Favourite travel destination Jerusalem. It’s calm, serene, natural and it’s promising. Every time I go there I go as light as possible because I have to remember that some day, you’ll go back to God. Within Nigeria, the Redemption Camp in Lagos is my favourite destination. Favourite food I am very adventurous with food but I like beans. Once I have tea and beans I’m okay. First and last app I check every day The Bible without thinking twice. One item that is old but refuse to let go. My T-square. It’s very old fashioned but I still love it. Life’s lessons A lot. First, life has taught me to be patient and wait on God; never be in a hurry for anything. Life has also taught me not to assume things. It has also taught me that you cannot live another person’s life. Yoruba people have a saying that says ‘Don’t use another person’s clock to do your work’. Life has taught me not to procrastinate but to do things in good time;life has taught me to take one step after the other. If you try to take two steps together, you will trip and fall. We don’t know it all and life will continue to teach us more. Last good book I read Ben Carson’s‘ A Purpose Filled Life’. It is a very good book. What I wouldn’t be caught wearing You wouldn’t catch me wearing something revealing or see through.

Looking back, what would you tell a younger you? I have a lot to tell a younger me. I must say that first and foremost, we need to be careful when we’re young. I wasn’t a wild person. I was very well tamed. But for a younger me I would say maybe start a family early. It took me seven years in the university as I wanted to establish my career before I went into marriage. I’m not regretting it but I’m just saying start early. I remember my parents telling me that I needed to settle down and marry and I would tell them ‘at the right time’. But honestly, I tell my children that they’ve done their first degree and second degree and should be settling down. I have a niece that wants to go for her PhD and she’s only 27 and I told her you need to start looking at settling down. I know what she’s going through and what she wants to achieve, I’ve been there. But I know that I will not advice a young girl to go ahead with her PhD before settling down. You will want to grow up with your children.

Ankara home décor By UCHE EZE

oday, Ankara prints are gaining popularity not only in the fashion world but in the creative and interior deceorating world. They are being used by interior designers who find unique ways to incorporate these prints into modern home decor. Adding Ankara prints to your home is a great way to give your home a boost of colour, individuality and creativity. These prints can be placed in any part of the house you choose; whether it’s the sitting room, bedroom, kitchen or bathroom. All that is important is to make sure that you don’t overdo it with them; otherwise your home will end up looking tacky instead of beautiful. In places like the kitchen, it is important to keep it really simple with the Ankara décor. You could simply switch your lacy curtains for Ankara prints and that would do the trick. For the sitting room, you can add a touch of Ankara depending on what your existing layout looks like. If your sofa is plaincoloured, go for Ankara throw pillows and maybe a single antique chair covered with Ankara fabric. There are no wrongs in adding Ankara to your home décor, all you have to do is

Turning your outdoor space into a personal gym By UCHE EZE

W

ondering what to do with all that vast outdoor space, how about making a gym out of the extra space you love? Your backyard offers all the workout possibilities you should need. And it’s better and more convenient, especially for family workout sessions. A backyard gym does not necessarily demand that you have state-of-the-art gym equipment. You could have a treadmill, a few dumbbells and maybe a homemade weight. The idea behind a personal backyard gym is to make use of the serene and calmenvironment. Therefore, try as much as possible to use the common thing around you for your fitness routine.

Eliminating saturated fat for a healthier lifestyle Stories by HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU

S

aturated fat is often labelled as the bad type of fat. Why? Because it is one of the main causes of heart related diseases and cholesterol. It solidifies, causing clogged up arteries, which without saying, is awfully bad in the long run. Saturated fats are found in butter, fatty meats, cured meat like sausages and salami, cheese and other dairy products, chocolate and pastries. According to Dr. John Ankama, ideally, the average adult should take no more than 30 grammes of saturated fat a day. But unfortunately, due to the poor diet most of us follow, the amount of saturated fat we consume in a day quadruples the figure above, which puts many of us at many health risks. There are ways to reduce the intake of saturated fats, by making changes in your diet little by little if you put in the effort such as: Comparing food labels when buying groceries so that you pick foods lower in saturated fat. Many people neglect to do this but taking a few seconds to scan through the food label goes an

awfully long way to help your health. When buying dairy products like milk, instead of buying full cat, why not go for semi skimmed or fat free milk? There isn’t really much difference in taste; so why not? Instead of always deep-frying your foods, why not go for poaching, steaming or baking instead? If you must fry, then use cholesterol free oil in controlled amounts. Measure with a spoon to know the amount you’re taking. Cut off the visible fat on your meat before cooking it. The fat from food is basically saturated fat in its raw form. It is terribly bad for your health. Alternatively, go for leaner meats like turkey or chicken breasts. You get succulent chunks of meat with little traces of saturated fat. For spreads like butter, instead of your usually fat spreads, try reduced fat spreads like olive oil or sunflower. Using these dietary techniques will definitely help you cut off saturated fat and in turn, a guaranteed healthier lifestyle and a healthier you. With additional information from the internet

Overeating and the harms you’re unaware of

T

h ’ a saying that here’s h goes “eat “ only l untill you’re 70 per cent full.” But there are some people that completely neglect this and eat until the point that they feel uncomfortable or have no room in their stomach. This is known as overeating. Overeating has emotional, psychological and physiological side effects says Dr. John Ankama. Some people overeat due to the feeling of loneliness, anger, sadness or simply because they’re bored; which is known as binge or compulsive eating. But this isn’t the answer as overeating can lead to weight gain that will only cause more anger and sadness too.

h overeating has h much h harm h h Apart ffrom this, when continued over a long period of time like high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, breathing problems, stroke, sleep apnea and kidney disease, amongst many others. Other dangers of overeating include: Organs that are involved in the digestion process and assimilation become more prone to disorders. The oil levels in your body are affected, giving more oily skin, which is more likely to give you breakouts, acne and other skin related problems. Bad memory, focus and concentration can be caused by certain foods when consumed in excess. People that overeat are also more prone to mouth and body odour. Therefore, if you feel like you have an overeating problem, then it’s best to visit a doctor to see what can be done about it, and also, see how you’re doing health wise also.

Etiquettes every child should be taught

G

ood manners and etiquettes is one of the most important qualities that parents should teach their kids. It shows discipline and nurture in the home. Sometimes it may seem like an impossible task but that pushing and nagging will be worth it when you see how your kids turn out in future. We’ve selected 10 etiquettes that are often overlooked but are essential manners kids need to know and practice. • If a door is closed, then knock and wait for permission to enter. Barging in without permission shows that the child has no regard for privacy or respect. • If your child needs to use something that isn’t his/hers, then always ask

Family affairs should be kept in house. They should not go blabbing about what they heard happening inside the house. Overall, try not to raise a child that is too chatty. Also, train them to clean up by themselves; whether it is in the bathroom, kitchen, living room, wherever. Wash the dishes; pick up the toys when you’re done playing, flush after using the bathroom and so on. Make sure they contribute to the cleanliness of the house. Table manners are also very important. Show them how to handle cutlery, not to eat in a rush and how they should eat their meals too. Changing the channel when someone is watching TV is a big no. Always tell them to ask before going ahead to change it. Another habit that kids need to be

taught is that they should not help themselves to what they find in the fridge. Asking before taking anything that doesn’t exclusively belong to them is right. Instilling honesty in your children is also very important. Lying is a big sin and telling the truth is always the right thing. You need to make sure your child knows this and goes by it. Finally, generosity goes a long way. Teach your kids to share what they have with whomever they are with. If not, you will end up with a stingy child, which would be a bad trait for them to carry for the rest of their lives. - It is important to remember that charity begins at home and therefore, making sure you raise your child with necessary etiquettes will in turn lead to the type of person your child grows up to become.

Why you’re better off taking a cold shower By HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU

F

or most of us, taking a cold shower means that we were last to get into the bathroom and the hot water had finished. Basically, taking a cold shower happens as a last resort. But as a matter of fact, by taking a cold shower, you’re actually doing your body a huge favour. The benefits of taking a cold shower every once in a while are pretty remarkable for your hair, body and your health too. So, perhaps from now on, you may reconsider turning on your heater in the morning before hopping into the shower. Here’s why: Makes your hair shinier: Your hair cuticles dry out when you wash your hair with hot water: leaving your hair dull and frizzy. Using cold water to rinse your hair will make it shinier and smoother by locking in moisture and flattening the cuticles. Helps relieve stress: We all know a stressed woman is a less beautiful one. Showering with cold water helps with relaxation by slowing down your heart rate and in turn, relieving you of all the tenseness you may feel.

DO YOU KNOW... THAT COLD SHOWERS ALSO STIMULATE WEIGHT LOSS?

EYE CARE

Enhances your skin: Cold water tightens your skin and closes your pores. It gets rid of any unwanted redness and shrinks the size of any pimples you may have. Your skin will look smoother and brighter and your make up will also glide on your skin so easily. Soothes your muscles: After a long and tiring day or a workout, taking a cold shower will reduce any soreness or inflammation you may have. It increases blood flow to repair any damaged muscles you may have. Anti ageing: Cold shower is an anti ageing recipe. How? The cold water keeps your skin supple and tight. Hot water on the other hand dries it out. Showering with cold water will keep those wrinkles at bay for a very long time

Pros and cons of wearing contact lenses

C

ontact lenses are usually a very good alternative to spectacles due to how visually enhancing they are, compared to frames. But just like everything else, it has its up sides and down sides too. Here are the pros and cons you should consider first: Pros - They completely eliminate the need to wear glasses. - They provide better side vision than glasses do. - There is a wide range to choose from depending on your taste and vision too. - They visually enhance your face without the interference of glasses. - Contact lenses may cost more than glasses but are less than eye surgery, and more riskfree too.

PAGE 38 TAMBARI SUNDAY, JULY 30, 2017

Cons - Disinfecting and keeping your lenses clean can be very inconveniencing and cause complications at times, like eye infections. - You need very good hand coordination to insert and remove the lenses. - They can be easily damaged or lost; meaning you probably need to replace them every now and then, - Many people find them uncomfortable and too expensive to use. - Lenses may become scratched or scraped due to how sensitive they are and in turn ruin the wearers’ vision. Whether you prefer the near invisible contact lenses or glasses, the choice is yours. Just ensure that you make a decision on which you feel you will be more comfortable with.
