MY BEST TRAVEL DESTINATION, BESIDES SAUDI ARABIA WHERE I GO FOR SPIRITUAL REJUVENATION, IS THE USA WHERE YOU CAN DO ANYTHING, FROM RELAXATION TO SHOPPING. When I left Yola, I had no idea where Abuloma was in Nigeria. We had to go to Jos where we were informed that Abuloma was in Port-Harcourt. I had to go to Jos by road from Yola where we joined the train from Kafanchan to Port-Harcourt. Each time I came home for the holidays I was asked if I still wanted to go back and I always answered ‘yes’. We were very few from the North and many never returned after coming for the holidays. Another challenge I

encountered was in my political adventure. I have learnt perseverance and the need to maintain your integrity, especially as a married woman. It was not easy, but with the belief in God and my husband’s support, I was able to go through and still come back home to live in peace with my husband. Life lessons Life has taught me to put my trust tru in Allah; and whatever he has destined for me is the best. I have learnt not to expect everyone to like me and everyone to hate me. Just as some people like you for no reason, others also wouldn’t like you for no reason. But my philosophy is to always alw do good to all that I come across; and whateve whatever is worth doing is worth doing well. Childhood dreams I wanted to be a nurse, but my husband h changed my direction before I even eve started my A Levels. The colour which was featured was geared at expressing its variance, intensity and how it can be fitting for each different and unique design. For each collection there was a showcase of lighter shade or the darker shade and then conbined with subtle colour features. The designs all had a feminine and classy cut, bearing in mind the elegance and classy look of women. The aim of the colour was for it to be transcended to a feminine colour, and the designs asserted this.

DELIVERY AFTER THIRTY SIX WEEKS My water broke last week. I am just thirty six weeks and the doctor want to deliver the baby. Is the baby not premature? Aisha Minna. Your water breaking is not a light complaint from a pregnant woman. It cannot be managed from the house. No matter the gestational age pregnant women with such complaints must be admitted’. The danger is once the membrane is ruptured, the uterus, baby and placenta have direct connection with the external environment therefore prone to infection which ranges from chorioamniotis to severe septicaemia and could be fatal for the foetus and the mother if not well managed. Once confirmed the first thing is to start antibiotics. What should be done after depends on the gestational age and the ability of the special care baby unit to nurse premature babies. Those who are thrty seven weeks and above deliver by induction of labour. The same rule applies to those whose foetus is between thirty four to thirty seven weeks, this is because outcome for survival of babies in this gestational age bracket is very good. The converse risk of infection and neonatal sepsis is worse than managing premature babies at this gestational age. In your own case, the baby is already thirty six weeks there is nothing to be afraid of. The baby should be delivered as soon as possible. I hope by the time this article is published, you will be preparing for your naming ceremony. The baby between thirty weeks and less than thirty four weeks will need antibiotics, an injection to hasten lung maturity of the baby depending on capacity of the SCBU to managed preterm, will determine whether to buy more time or still deliver immediately. Those less than thirty weeks it might be advisable to buy time for better lung maturity while continuing the antibiotics and administration of corticosteriod for lung maturity. There are some special circumstance when rupture of membrane occurs too early and advise is that such pregnancy should be terminated in order to preserve fertility and life of the mother. This undue prolonged rupture of membrane is a common complication. In our own environment, pregnancy between twenty to twenty four weeks gestational age with ruptured membrane may be better terminated rather than risking the life of the mother. I will like to implore all women and their spouses not to take it lightly when their water breaks at any stage of the pregnancy.

RECEIVING SAME SYMPTOMS AFTER TAKING PRESCRIPTION A couple of weeks ago, I was diagnosed with candidiasis after seeing a doctor, she prescribed nystatin which I used for 10 days. While using it, the itching and foul smell stopped, but a couple days after I finished using the drug, I started experiencing the itching and discomfort, followed by the yellowish discharge, although it’s not as bad as it was before I used the medication. But the symptoms are increasing day by day. Should I use the nystatin for another 10 days again? Please help. Aisha, Abuja

W

hy not go and see the doctor again and give her the feedback. She may need to change your medication. Since it is yellowish. it might be advisable for you to do endocervical swab for microscopy, culture and sensitivity first. Also no matter the sensitivity antibiotic for chlamydial organism should be added because of the colour of the discharge. Let me retriate here that chlamydia organism are difficult to grow on normal culture medium. This time around, I will suggest you use a combination of oral, pessary and cream

URINATING OFTEN BEFORE NIGHT FALL Sir, I urinate almost 20 times before night falls. Is it normal and if it is not? Please, I need your advice on what to do about it. Mercy Olivia from Jikwoyi, Abuja How old are you? Have you checked your sugar level. You need to do a fasting blood sugar level as soon as possible. You may also need to do a urine culture test. I will suggest you meet your family physician.

GET ORGANISED WITH LAUNDRY BASKET by MULIKATU MUKAILA

L

aundry baskets help you to organise your clothes. This way, you will be able to separate dirty clothes from clean ones. There are a lot of benefits related to having a laundry hamper in your house. In terms of hygiene, the laundry hampers help you combat the ease with which germs and bacteria spreads in the house. Remember that there are conditions that are necessary for bacteria to thrive. Normally, moisture, high temperature and humid conditions are what help bacteria to survive and multiply fast. Considering all these facts, you can now understand why it is important to have a laundry hamper where all the dirty clothes can be stuffed in at the end of the day. From there, the clothes can be thrown into the washer to prevent further reproduction of new bacteria. This is a great stride in the fight of bacteria in the house. Also, that you stocked your clothes with a laundry basket does not mean you should keep them for long without washing. This will only cause more bacteria and even bring strange stains to your clothes. Buying laundry hampers to put your dirty clothes ensures that you have a two-pronged strategy. You are curtailing the factors that induce the growth of bacteria germs while also enjoying order in your home. The best place to keep the hamper is not clear to many people. However, the safest place to have it in the bathroom. This is because the bathroom is a safe distance from food preparation. Clothes are normally infested with germs because they make first contact with the dirt as you go about the day’s hassle. The dirt would have otherwise gotten you infected. This is why placing the hamper at a safe distance from food will prevent unnecessary infections. Whatever your choice in placing the basket, a fancy laundry basket is sure to help you get organised.

BODY HAIR SKIN

B E AU T Y Sunburn: Prevention and remedy by PRISCA EMADU

S

unburn affects the skin tissues. This occurs from over exposure to ultraviolet radiation, commonly from the sun. The main symptom one gets after experiencing sunburn is that one’s skin becomes reddish, painful and develops swelling. If the burning is severe it can turn to sun blisters. At times it can also make you feel like you have gotten the flu as you will feel feverish with chills, nausea, headache and weakness. In order to prevent the effect of sunburn, especially now that the hot weather is approaching, here are some easy measures that can be followed. - Avoid spending too much time in the sun, especially if you are light in complexion. - Wear hats, sunshades, apply sunscreen. - Drink plenty of water so that you can be hydrated while

spending time in the sun. If sunburn occurs, there are home remedies that can help in treating and relieving the stinging you get. They include: - When you notice you have sunburn, quickly take a cloth and dampen it, compress it on the burn. This would reduce the heat and lessen the pain. - You can also soak the affected burnt area in a bathtub that is free from soap. This is because soap can irritate the burn. - Another remedy to sunburn is applying a soothing lotion, cream or an ointment approved by a physician or pharmacist.

THE KWAGH-HIR TIV SHOW //

C U LT U R E

The KwaghHir Tiv show by MULIKATU MUKAILA

K

wagh-Hir, which literally means “something magical, is a traditional puppet theatre show of the Tiv tribe in North-Central, Nigeria. The Kwagh-Hir performance is a mixture of storytelling, poetry, puppetry, music, dance, and drama. Traditionally, the Kwagh-Hir group has consistently been organised into four different categories, which are: the management, the musicians, the performers and the sculptors. There is normally a role suitable for different members of the entire community. An elderly man usually plays the role of the leader of the Kwagh-Hir group. He is known as the Ter-u-Kwagh-Hir, meaning father of Kwagh-Hir. His job is to organise the group and settle any differences or disputes that may arise. The Kwagh-Hir show emphasizes on storytelling or folktales. The stories are usually told at night, between dinner and bedtime. Elders among family members usually tell stories about hunters who go out at night and return with frightened and exaggerated stories of their experiences and narrow escapes

With additional info from the Internet.

from man-eating beast and wild animals. Creative minds then pick up such stories and blend them into Kwagh-Hir, with lessons tied to them. The Kwagh-Hir show reflects on many of the socio-cultural qualities of the Tiv people such as their sense of justice, as well as their physical strength and endurance. It is an all-night spectacle of the Tiv people, including their legendary warriors and farmers, whereby men from a an age group work together on communal farming and house building and celebrate their achievements with feasts, famed for the excellence of their music and dance. Each year, during the dry season when there is little farm work, leaders of the dance

teams compose songs to record recent experiences and new features in their lives, which they express in the rhythms and gestures of their dance. This continuous invention reaches great heights of creativity in the Tiv storytelling drama, known as the Kwagh-Hir.
