CHINYERE LILIAN AMUCHINWA // Background My name is Lady Chinyere Lilian Amuchinwa, I am from Imo State. My father was a surgeon and mum a teacher, she retired as a headmistress. I come from a family of 7 children and I am the 4th child. From childhood I had always known that I will become an entrepreneur because I love doing what I am doing now. I studied marketing in the university and have an MBA from the American School in London. Educational background I did my primary school at Holy Rosary Primary School Okigwe and later went to Owerri Girls for my secondary school. I had my A-levels in marketing from American University Watford and my masters from there too. Growing up My growing up wasn’t that smooth; I grew up in a rural area in Okigwe in Imo State, that was where my parent lived at a time. Being the daughter of a teacher, it wasn’t easy but I knew that one day I would be where I am today. As a child, we used to visit the Leventis store during Christmas period to shop; we had limited fun because my dad at that time would give us a particular spending limit. My other siblings pick up about 3 different items, I would pick

is not gold. My Glitters is actually ly about quality and gold at the same time. I have always tique in Nigeria dreamt of having a unique boutique and when it materialized theree was no better name to call it than glitters. Challenges Initially it was hard for me, especially when I try to educate customers not to touch items on display. Another challengee was that we os; I was out of completely shut down in Lagos; the business for seven to ten years. This I had ig names in the to do in order to convince the big o represent fashion world to trust in me to w I would them in Nigeria. I wondered how get all the finance and meanss but all ooking that is history now. We are looking d have towards 2016, where we would a ball with more reputable names to grace the event. It is still work in progress and I am hopeful that I would get there someday. My Fashion Label gerie I thought of it in my lingerie section. I don’t make clothes but ds. I deal in finished and luxury goods. ing think I will just stick to representing the big names.

I AM STILL THE SAME PERSON FROM A HUMBLE HOME. MY PASSION WAS FASHION AND I’M DOING IT TODAY. I HAVE ALWAYS KNOWN I WOULD BE ON MY OWN AFTER MYY FIRST DEGREE up just one, and the one I would pick would be equal to what my sibling picked. I would rather pick up just one shoe and my father would ask why I was picking up just one item but which was expensive, and I would explain that it was all about the quality instead of buying a variety that wasn’t of good quality. So it has always been on my mind that when I grew up, I would do quality fashion. Growing up was strict, there was no freedom and that is why I don’t socialize. I have my time to eat, go to bed and do other things, I really don’t go out. Abuja as choice I started the business in Lagos State after I had returned from England in 1998. I was in Foreshore Towers in Ikoyi but it wasn’t this large. I basically got my passion for business from my dad. He inspired me fashion wise. When I started in Lagos, I didn’t have up to five names but right now, I am dealing with up to 13 companies and that is why I am in Abuja. People actually think Lagos is the hub of fashion business but that is not true. The Italians are current with news and most of them want their labels and names in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria. Glitters That name came across to me when I was in high school. I came across one little place called glitters although they say all that glitters

Fond childhood memory ought of Not one, I have never thought anything I miss. You have to miss what w much so you know; I really didn’t know I don’t miss anything. I just practice my Catholic life which has always been part of me since childhood. Aspirations growing up ill the same Nothing changed. I am still person from a humble home.. My passion was fashion and I’m doing it today. I have always known I would be on my own after nd do exactly my first degree and masters and what I am doing now. Life’s lesson Life has thought me be to be patient. God nows you will knows everything and he knows be there. I look forward to myy tomorrow, as it comes I take it, I don’t rush life. A friend of he companies I mine who works with one of the represent once dropped my callll because I was ompany. Today seeking business with her company. me person who she doesn’t know I am the same here is nothing she banged the phone on. There patience can’t do once we can endure it. Best travel destination Paris, because it is a hub of everything especially fashion. Everything we do in our business is there. TAMBARI NOVEMBER 29, 2015

DEAR DIARY Bitter trials: turned blessing

L

azily entering the living room after closing from work, I could feel a quick smile on my face; a quick thought ran through my mind, ‘I am finally home at last’. I could at least eat dinner and go to bed on time, so I could wake up early to do my laundry the next day being a Saturday. I also intended to see our family doctor for my routine check-up which I had to start a year ago after five years of marriage without anything to show for it. It was getting worrisome and had no choice than to start a routine check. Nkechimy reliable maid hurriedly helped me with my bag, while at that I asked what she prepared for dinner and her reply was ‘Oga said I should take the day off and I should not cook anything’. The smile on my face wiped off immediately as I gave her a stern look and asked when he called to tell her that. Her response jolted me further. ‘He did not call, he is upstairs‌‌’ On hearing that he was upstairs I immediately dashed upstairs without waiting to hear what she had to say‌‌’ what could possibly be wrong with him, Oh My God‌hope all is well with him, why is he home this early’ different thoughts ran through my mind as I ran upstairs. I could hear her running after me and saying ‘mummy, daddy is fine, nothing is wrong with him’. Whatever she said would not change the thoughts already running through my mind, I had to see him for myself and clear my doubt that all was well with him.

I barged into our bedroom and met him on the bed, I was so full of fury when I saw him, and as usual I met him drinking which was a habit that was becoming a daily routine since his mum died. Remembering her now, all I could think was how would her soul feel seeing her son in this state Being the only child of his mother after their father abandoned them when he was six years old and eloped with a white woman to her country; she never got married again and decided to cater for her only son, my husband. I calmed myself and decided not to take it out on him as it will only add to his troubles, what he needed now was closure and not nagging. ‘Honey what is the matter, why did you come home early today, did everything go well at work, did anything

happen in the office, do you feel unwell?’ I asked checking his temperature which to me was normal. He kept blushing and I was confused on what was happening to him, he simply replied by saying, ‘woman one question at a time don’t get worked up unnecessarily’ At that moment I felt like knocking his head, here I was all worked up and worried and all he had to say was one question at a time! ‘I am doing fine as you can see, and nothing happened in the office, I just came back early so that we can both attend Daniels house warming party this evening. At first I was perplexed and wondered if he is actually talking to me, and I gave him a sharp look and asked‘Really!’ He asked why? I can’t remember when last we both attended a private function. After four years of marriage we never went out together as other couples in the neighborhood did. I was complained at first but nothing changed so I gave up nagging about us not going out as often as we should, after all a woman’s place is the kitchen which is a common belief with African men. I got up from the bed and walked towards the restroom but with a smile on my face and silently thanking God that for touching his heart today. I was about to open the bathroom door when he handed be a beautiful red dinner gown and a pair of matching shoes. I was overwhelmed and kept screaming as he had never done this since we married.....

CLASSY HAIRDOS FROM OWO by TADAFERUA UJORHA who was in Owo

Y

ou can’t miss the lovely hairdos while covering the Igogo festival. If you turn either to the left or to the right, the hairdos seem to encircle you, and they are worn by women of all ages. Women who are of the Olorisa group also turn out in their special hairdos .Every single type seen at the event is festive, inspiring ,rare and floral, and the visitor quietly hopes the festival won’t end yet and that it won’t rain, or that twilight won’t come too soon. He focuses on the dancing Oba who keeps taking those regal steps every minute, and then he shifts the camera to the women who are numerous. The camera is caught in a rotation between the dancing Oba and the elegant women who wear the hairdos. Soon the early afternoon sunlight makes every single woman to look like a royalty, and the women show that the hairdo is an art which they have mastered over the years. The festival is in honour of Oronsen, a goddess who once lived among the people. It is said that hundreds of women helped to keep her beautiful, attending to her toes, her fingers as well as to her hair

and skin every day. This was 700 years ago. Today, in remembrance of the goddess, the Oba will plait his hair, wear a red blouse and dance around the town, together with his chiefs. When the women turn up their hairdos faintly hint at the beauty of the goddess, and often a man would find a wife during the Igogo festival, or a lady would find a husband. I guess this depends on who notices the other first .All these lovely hairdos and refined manners have played a role in cementing love and forging ties between the sexes, for the festival creates an environment for people to get to know each other and marry. An Oba married 100 women during a previous festival, Tambari was told. This was many years ago. One can’t help but think that when the women appear wearing such nice hairdos, lovely blouses and shoes which h speak of good taste, they are quietly giving g the men and some women a lesson in hairdressing ressing and grooming, for the festival has a theatrical atrical side: the men wear wigs and braids, and look feminine for jju just ust st a few days each September eptember .

CAN I GET PREGNANT AFTER RUPTURED UTERUS I had ruptured uterus in my last pregnancy and lost the baby. Can I still have another baby? What do I do to avoid a re-occurance? - Amina, Bauchi Ruptured uterus is an obstetric emergency and can be catastrophic for mother and baby if not well managed. One would have liked to know what led to the ruptured uterus. Some of the common causes include prolonged obstructed labour, injudicious use of misoprostol or oxytocin among others. First you have to confirm from your doctor whether tubal ligation was done or not. This is because in posterior rupture and extensive ruptured uterus and in some other cases, tubal ligation is done after repairs to prevent reoccurrence. There

are some that one has to do subtotal hysterectomy. If you confirm that tubal ligation was not done and you are seeing your menses it means the doctor has assessed and there is a chance of another pregnancy. If you are pregnant, you have to register early in a hospital with a consultant obstetrician. There is usually need for admission prior to term, some as early as 28 weeks till delivery. The delivery is usually by elective caesarean section. Close monitoring is required to prevent recurrence

Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada - FCT. MOBILE: 0803 803 9182 EMAIL: nadewole2013@gmail.com

MENSTRUAL PAINS I have a girl I want to marry. She is 23 years old. When she is about to see her menses it comes with serious pains. Please guide us on what to do. Aliyu Benue State Let her take pain killers (analgesics) during her period and it will be alright but if it is not responding to this then take her to see a gynaecologist.

WHITE WATER I have stains on my underwear. White water comes out of my private part. Is it an infection? What do I do sir? See you family physician. Do endocervical swab for microscopy, culture and sensitivity and take appropriate antibiotics together with your partner

FOUL SMELLING DISCHARGE I am having a colour discharge with foul odour. I have had it four years now and I have been treating it but it keeps coming back after the medication wears out of my system. In the last three months, I have done two swab tests in a good hospital and nothing was found. The doctor gave me injection and some drugs. I saw the doctor again last week with same complaint but she advised that I use panty liner and watch it because I have taken enough drugs even though the discharge is not much but smells badly. If the discharge smells, then you still have pelvic inflammatory disease that is not well treated yet. What some medical practitioners forget is that the drugs used for PID is not based on culture and sensitivity alone but there are drugs that are added for organisms that are difficult to grow like chlamydia. In this case if the discharge is only creamy then you need antifungal only. Also, your partner must be treated at the same time to avoid reinfection. You should see a gynaecologist please. The long-time complications like tubal damage with subsequent fertility problems do not allow partially treated PID to be toyed with. TAMBARI NOVEMBER 29, 2015

How to remain hot this harmattan by PRISCA EMADU

W

hen you hear clean shave, what comes to mind is the beard. But a clean shave can also be done on the head. As known by many in Nigeria, the harmattan period is a season that many dread because of the harsh condition the weather subjects the skin to. Men during this season, especially those with clean shave, experience dryness, and sometimes whiteness of the beard or head after a shave. The remedy is

quite simple, for those of you who like to have a clean and neat shave, during the season of harmattan, it is best you use an after shave cream or lotion that has more oil in it and you can apply it as many times as it is needed in a day. That would reduce the dryness, possible flakes and whiteness. Harmattan is upon us and it comes with challenges for skin and beards. But don’t worry as you can remain hot and on top of your game even in this harsh season.

FINE COOKING

with

SEEKH KEBAB (MINCED LAMB) If you have never tried this dish it could turn out to be a favourite. The tenderness succulence of lamb minced and marinated with fresh Indian spices, carefully rolled onto skewers and roasted. Thinking about it alone would make your mouth water thirsting for more. Wakkis would never deprive you the privilege of enjoying this meal with some steamed basmati rice with a side of gravy sauce.

INGREDIENTS EDIENTS USED AMB NIHARI IN LAMB GREEN CHILLI PEPPERS: Green chillies are immature peppers that have been harvested before fully ripening. They are low in calories, virtually fatfree and rich in nutrients that can enhance your health, including vitamins A, C and K and capsaicin. Being very green already depicts that they are good for you. The capsaicin found in them can be an anti-depressant as it releases endorphins - hormones for good mood - into the brain. The consumption of green chillies helps in releasing saliva

They are often used for garnishing and other culinary purposes. It has eleven components of essential oils, six types of acids (including ascorbic acid, better known as vitamin-C), minerals and vitamins, each having a number of beneficial properties. Coriander seeds are used in some parts of the world like Iran to treat insomnia and anxiety because of its sedative effects. The powder form is used as a natural medicine to treat panic attacks, depression and other psychological and emotional disorders. Coriander is also known to promote good memory – very essential to always remember your seekh kebab experience. They may also be used to regulate insulin levels, reduce cholesterol, treat haemorrhoids, enhance libido, relieve headaches and prevent water retention. It’s a green affair with the ingredients but we can assure you that we exceed your expectations when it comes to delivery and presentation. The platter is fresh of the grill. BODY HAIR SKIN

B E AU T Y Your skin &

HARMATTAN by PRISCA EMADU

W

hen it comes to the skin, much care is given to it, but that depends on your skin type, especially during a season like harmattan. Basically there are four types h of o skin type, these are; dry skin, oily skin, normal skin and combination skin. These n diff d erent skin types respond differently to beauty agents and at such don’t use the b same products. One fact to note is that the skin type could change over time, this can commonly be caused by aging. The period of harmattan is the time many if not all our skin types dread. During this season, each body type reacts differently. The dry skin becomes flaky if not properly taken care of; the oily skin may experience clogging of pores, thereby experiencing more blemish of the skin like pimples and blackhead. The combination skin in this period becomes

very confused, some part of the body experiences more dryness than other parts. The dry skin is known to be dull. The oily skin is known to have enlarged pores, dull or shiny thick complexion, and most likely those with this skin type experience blackheads, pimples or other skin issues. Combination skin type is associated with some areas of the skin being oily and others dry, sometimes it can be the face that is oily and other parts of the body dry. Normal skin type has no sign of oiliness or dryness and can be very sensitive. In this season, you will see people experiencing whiteness of the skin, especially those with dry skin type. They suffer unnecessary dryness and the skin becomes very sensitive and they can easily fall prey to infections. Parts of the skin that suffer most during this season, are those around the leg, the face, elbow and knee cap. This is so because there are parts of the body that are very exposed and at such easily affected by the harmattan.

SKIN CARE Tips for a shiny skin this harmattan with PRISCA EMADU

DO YOU KNOW... NOT EATING RIGHT, SMOKING, STRESS, POLLUTION, CLIMATE, DIET, PROLONGED EXPOSURE TO THE SUN, MEDICATIONS, ETC CAN INFLUENCE SKIN TYPE?

DRY SKIN: - Have a cream or lotion at reach, preferably in your purse, car or handbag. OILY SKIN: - Those with oily skin should wash more often before applying cream. ALL SKIN TYPES: - Try to be protected from the sun, because the skin can be very sensitive when the sun is burning and in the season of harmattan. - Know the part of their body that is dry and oily, treat accordingly. - Lastly drink lot of water to keep their skin hydrated.
