ith the blessed month of Ramadan now with us, we need to look for Islamic clothing that will be perfect for maintaining a modest look and balance our personal style taste. There is no doubt that every fashion Muslim lady will want to look stylish, elegant and modest during this season. This is a season in which we need to look our best, and not shabby. If you want to get that modest and perfect look this Ramadan, try out these tips and you won’t go wrong. Tips: • You can combine the maxi skirt with a fitted top and a loose cardigan and also match it with a bright hijab. • Pairing a blazer with a maxi dress, or wearing a long tunic over trousers, is not a bad idea as long as it’s not too revealing. • You can opt for kaftans too, because they are fashionable and, at the same, time very conservative. They come in long sleeves and short, and they are long which is modest. • Avoid anything too revealing and in general, clothes that are too tight. • Go for the make-up techniques which allows you to look natural. .

AS A CHILD, I DREAMT OF BECOMING THE PRESIDENT OF THIS COUNTRY. BUT I AM FULFILLED AS A HOUSE WIFE.
Educational Background I started my early education at the Capital School in Sokoto and proceeded to the Federal Government College, Gusau. From there, I gained admission into the Kaduna State Polytechnic, Zaria, got married along the line and went to the United States. Aspiration As a child, I dreamt of becoming the president of this country. But I am fulfilled as a house wife. Fondest memories We grew up in a house filled with lots of family members, from close to extended family members. Our house was like a little community and majority were boys. I remember them taking me out to their female friends’ houses so I can go into the house, as a girl, to call their girlfriends out for them and, today, most of them are married to their old friends. I also remember learning lots of things from my neighborhood. Then, people used to correct children without minding who their parents were. We don’t have that now and I really miss that aspect of life.
Mallpai Foundation I started my NGO, basically, to deal with almajirai. One fateful day, I went to a filling station and saw a child who was about five years old with his younger brother, also not more than two years old, they were crying there. As a mother, I was touched and scolded the elder brother for bringing his brother out without shoes and, suddenly, he was in tears, explaining to me that they came out to beg for alms so they can feed because their mum was late and their step mother wouldn’t accept them. He said their father had to take them to an almajirai school (tsangaya) so that they could learn Arabic and feed. I told him to enter my car so that I could take him to his teacher, but he refused, saying he didn’t know me and that really touched me. So, I gave him all I had on me that day

CO V E R I N T E R V I E W for him to buy shoes for himself and his brother, including food to eat. I came back home worried, I kept thinking of how I could help people in need. I started talking to people and that was how MALLPAI was born. So in MALLPAI, we focus mainly on almajirai before we expanded to orphans and widows. We have been in existence for about ten years now. MALLPAI’s impact on society In Kebbi State, we have three major almajirai schools. Mostly on Thursday and Friday, when the children don’t have to go out to the streets to beg for food, we feed them. We actually started with seven schools, we teach them how to read and write then we pick

those that are very intelligent, with the permission of their parents, and put them in western schools. We have over 200 almajirai going to school under MALLPAI, we have 20 in secondary school, seven in polytechnic and two are already university graduates. Also, we have provision of adult education where we teach women to read so that they will be able to, at least, spell their names. I used to tell the women we have empowered that whatever we give them to start a business is a loan, so that they won’t misuse it. We open an account to enable them save some money at the end of the month. It is just a way of teaching them how to save for tomorrow. My NGO will assist the less privileged, including widows. We will also come up with an education platform so that more people in the state will be
able to go to school. We will also empower more women and change a lot of lives, we’ll put smile on
I PREFER TO REMAIN AT HOME WITH MY CHILDREN. IT’S THE BEST FORM OF RELAXATION FOR ME. AS A CHILD, I GREW UP AROUND MY PARENTS AND THIS BROUGHT A VERY STRONG BOND BETWEEN US. peoples’ face permanently. I go to bed with these thoughts everyday on my mind. Motherhood Honestly, I can’t explain the joy of being a mother because it’s amazing. I was brought up to believe that motherhood, on its own, is an institution. With the first child, which you tend to make lots of mistake while nursing, you learn from those mistakes. I thank Allah for the children He has given to me. Today, I am a mother of six children. Meeting husband We were family friends, my father and his own father were good friends and I have known him all this while as a brother, not knowing he will end up being my husband. I am glad he ended up being my husband. This is the best thing I could have wished for. Supporting him I intend to support him with prayers and I will also support him in any way I can as his wife, I will also support him by being a loyal and devoted wife. I will also support him in whatever steps he takes to bring development to the state and nation at large. Relaxation I prefer to remain at home with my children. It’s the best form of relaxation for me. As a child, I grew up around my parents and this brought a very strong bond between us. I have a five-year-old daughter who, whenever she returns from school, I will ask her to teach me what she was taught in school. she teaches me diligently while I pretend not to have an idea of what she is reading out to me. She is always very happy that I am learning

from her. Every day, we learn from our children because they are wise and smart. Some weeks ago, my third son came to me with an idea about my NGO and suggested I make provision for the people who are not schooling, by establishing vulcanizing shops for them, because we have a lot of them in Kebbi State. He also brought up the idea of irrigation farming in the state and I was amazed because I was focusing more on education. Role models Best of them are my parents. My father always told us that whatever wealth we acquire is not meant for us alone, and that we must take care of your immediate society. Recently, I met a woman, we got talking and I mentioned my father’s name, she said I reminded her of somebody who is now of blessed memories. She said the man assisted her in setting up her business and, amazingly, she is not from the North. When she called my father’s name, I smiled because I was touched and I told her that was my father, she immediately asked how she can meet his family to assist them. I then remembered what my father used to tell us as children: “Be good to people because you don’t know where your good deeds will meet you.” My dad treated us not as his children but as his friends, we can talk about anything to him because he was more of a friend than a father. Style I love to dress in a modest way and well covered in an Islamic way. I love my atamfa, well sewed, in either gowns or skirts and blouses. I also love cool colours like purple, peach and torques blue colours. Legacies I want to be known as a woman that finds joy in assisting the less privileged and give their lives positive meanings.

OGBUNIKE CAVE //

OGBUNIKE CAVE:
A CAVE WITH A UNIQUE STORY by PUPWAYA TIMOTHY DIBAL
N
igeria is blessed with so many natural geographic features, making the country worthy of visiting for tourists. One of such natural geographic wonders to behold is the Ogbunike Cave, popularly known by the locals as Ogba Cave. It is located in Anambra State, South-east of Nigeria. Ogbunike town is famous for its cave, situated in a valley blanketed by tropical rain forest behind the Ogba hills, in Oyi Local Government Area, a 10-km drive from Onitsha. The cave was discovered by a hunter called Ukwa, who never thought he will discover something like a cave. On the day he made the discovery, the cave, he set out from his home to hunt for wild animals. Then, suddenly came face to face with what in his imagination looked unreal, covered in spotless attire.
Stories have it that sitting some few metres away from him on an anthill was a weird looking figure of an extraordinary size. He became scared and the unreal image, apparently aware of the hunter’s situation, broke the silence and spoke for the first time. That, naturally, heightened the state of fear of the hunter. He made it known to the hunter that his mission was to keep watch over the people of Ogbunike, ensure their safety in times of war, and protect them from all evils. He pointed towards the valley where the cave was situated as his “Obi”. He told the dumbfounded hunter to visit him again on Eke Market Day, warning that he must not be accompanied by dogs. Since then, it is considered a taboo to visit the Ogba Cave with dogs. Regarded as a natural wonder, rich
in history and tradition, this network of interconnecting sandstone chambers, tunnels and streams (with bat colony and a waterfall), the cave provides great enjoyment and adventurous entertainment to all its visitors. The main cave consists of a massive structure with a big open chamber of about 5m high, 10m wide and 30m long at the entrance. There are ten tunnels at the main chamber, leading to different directions. Within the tunnels are big chambers and other tunnels of varying lengths, some of which are inter connected. A stream flows out from one of the tunnels into a flowing river (River Nkissa). At the meeting point of the river and the stream, one can feel the warm water from the caves and the cold river water. With its networking tunnels and formed in sections, each
cave has its own story. Local history records that Ogbunike’s ancestors hid from slave traders in the caves. According to oral tradition, it was also a place, in ancient times, where people went to declare their innocence of any crime they were accused of. Those proved guilty never returned alive. Descending into the valley where the caves are located is a lengthy walkway made up of about 317 steps said to have been constructed by the Anambra State Government in the mid 90s. At the end of the walkway is an open space used as a reception for tourists and visitors. The custodians of the cave are known as the Ifite Youth Movement. Visitors are advised to bring flashlight, and remove their shoes before entering the cave while women on their monthly cycle are not allowed to enter. Spiritual ceremonies, among other ceremonies, are banned there. Ogbunike caves are associated with living traditions and are said to be used by the people for many centuries. The site still retains its historical and spiritual significance. It is a place worth visiting. When next you happen to be in Anambra State, this cave should be a paramount on your tour list. BIRTH CONTROL PILLS
Please, prescribe a birth control pill for me. Anonymous
CAN I STOP THE DRUGS?
I was diagnosed to be hypertensive seven months ago and placed on amilodipine and moduretic. My blood pressure has been normal for the past three months. Can I stop the drugs now? I am feeling normal. Musa, Katsina.
N
o, you should not stop the drugs. Hypertension, in most cases, is essential hypertension and the cause is unknown. In most cases, the treatment lasts for a life time. It is only in those cases where the cause of the hypertension is identified, that the disease can be curable. Even then, the hypertensive drugs have to be withdrawn gradually, under the supervision of an expert. Hypertension is like a spring, once you put appropriate weight on the spring it remains down, if the weight is removed suddenly, the spring returns back to its full length and can even bounce up and injure people. So if somebody with very high blood pressure is being managed with, maybe, multiple drugs
It is not good and or right to prescribe drugs like that. For example, the type of birth control pills to be used will be influenced by factors like previous history of migraine, whether the patient is hypertensive or not, or lactating, among others. Even the other methods of family planning, apart from pills, must be carefully chosen, after proper history considered and examined. For example, it may not be advisable to give a woman in a polygamous setting an IUCD. I will suggest you go to a family planning clinic or see your doctor first for advice.
and treatment is withdrawn suddenly, the blood pressure can rise abnormally and, sometimes, lead to cardiovascular accident (CVA) or stroke. Special cases of hypertension in which blood pressure can easily return back to normal and patient is taken off drugs include pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH). Usually after the delivery of the baby, the blood pressure returns back to normal within six weeks and patients are taken off drugs completely. Only in few cases of PIH will the hypertension persist. Let me also advise that in addition to taking medication, people who are hypertensive should do other investigations like ECG and echocardiogram to detect any complication early.
BLEEDING AFTER INTERCOURSE I am thirty-seven years old with two kids. For about four months now, I usually see blood after meeting my husband. What could be the cause, and what should I do? Aisha, Okene.
What you are describing is called post-coital bleeding. Causes of this include fibroid polyps or a cervical polyp, that is, fibroid that is growing in the endometrium and developed long stalk to now be protruding through the cervix. Also cervicitis, that is, cervical erosion, can lead to post-coital bleeding as well as other infections. Having intercourse with no proper stimulation or wetness could also cause post-coital bleeding. In older postmenopausal women, the loss of estrogen leads to strophic vaginitis and vulvoginitis is a common cause of post-coital bleeding. Post-coital bleeding could be a pointer to cervical cancer and that is one reason while anyone with such complaints should be
assessed as soon as possible by gynaecologist to rule out this possibility. You need to visit a gynaecologist for proper assessment. History and physical examination would help to identify the cause in quite a number of cases. Other investigation would include speculum examination to identify things like cervical polyps, endocervical swab, papsmear for cytology, colposcopy and, if necessary, have examination under anaesthesia and biopsy. Post-coital bleeding should not be taken lightly. I want to encourage women to open up to their spouse and doctor early about such complaints. They should avoid delay and feeling of embarrassment.

WHAT NOT TO WEAR TO WORK.
ALEX EKUBO
O.C. UKEJE
by PRISCA EKOKUJE
S
tyle, fashion and dress sense is always a hot topic of discussion among people. Why is this so? Probably, the answer is because we all like to look good. But when it comes to dressing to work, there seems to be a division in opinion. Some prefer to dress business-like while others prefer to go casual. Amidst this division, however, men appear to have fewer style options than women, but that doesn’t mean their appearance is any less important. Here are some cues for what a man should not wear to work. • Wrinkled shirts: Wearing a wrinkled shirt to work is a definite no, as it makes you look sloppy and unkempt. No matter how neat your shirt is, it is best when your
shirts are well ironed. • Badly fitted shirts: Oversize or undersize is a bad outfit for a work place, wearing over size makes you look un-presentable and an oversized or extremely fitted shirt gives out all your body at work. You should wear a normal fitted shirt with collar. • Hats: Though hats, to some, is still considered as a touch, an epitome of style, wearing any kind of hat or cap to work is a downer to official wears. • Sandals: No matter how comfy or cool they make you feel, any type of shoe that exposes your toes is not good for the work place. Especially if you are not wearing it with a traditional outfit.
EBUKA
• Sharp colours: Imagine wearing a purple suit to work, that looks more like an outfit for occasions like, dinners, award ceremonies, etc. You should wear cool or neutral colours like black, brown, navy blue, or khaki with nice and colourful inner shirts to match. Take a cue from the above men on what to wear to the work.

general. Here, at Wakkis it is blended together to form a smooth paste before use. TAMARIND POWDER: This is a fruit which contains small seeds and a sour-pulp which becomes very sour when dried. This is then blended to form a powder and used in food preparation. It is used in a variety of food items like Sambar, Rasam, Chutneys, Sauces etc. When used in a Dal dish it gives it a wonderful flavour with a delicate undertone of sourness without overpowering the earthy comforting flavour of the Dal. The pulp of this fruit can also be used as a skin exfoliator and toning agent because of the alpha hydroxyl acids. (AHA). This is one of the major ingredients in various leading exfoliating creams available in the market.
Delicious LAMB CURRY
A lamb is normally classified as a young sheep under 12 months of age which does not have any permanent incisor teeth in wear. This normally allows for the tender end results when used in any dish. Unlike other terms the lamb is said to be the most expensive to acquire in the market. Here at Wakkis we pride ourselves in using nothing but the best in keeping our customers happy. Each piece of lamb is marinated to perfection delivering that melt-in-your mouth sensation and this is served with enjoyable side dishes like rice, Nan bread or chips. INGREDIENTS & SPICES USED TO MARINATE TANDOORI CHICKEN BLACK/GREEN CARDAMOM: Cardamom is one of the most expensive spices that is a member of the ginger family and is often described as a peppery and citrusy spice. The often come in three colours: black, green and white. The green cardamom is most common and can be found in supermarkets. The black cardamom are dried over wood fires resulting in a dark brown colour and a bold, smoky flavour that gives a distinct flavour when added in any dish. The white cardamom is a bleached version often used in pastries and desserts without fear of altering the colour of your dish. Apart from cooking, cardamom is said to be a good detoxifier and diuretic for elimination of waste through the kidneys, helps clean out the urinary tract, bladder, and kidneys, removing waste, salt, excess water, toxins, whilst combating infections too. It helps to combat colorectal cancer when included in your daily diet. In some countries it is used as a remedy for asthma, because of its strong smell and crude extracts allow for opening of constricted windpipes whilst causing relaxation in the tracheal tissues. The oils extracted from this spice play an integral part in aromatherapy as it promotes better blood circulation in the body. Within the 5 senses this spice caters to the nose with a distinct aromatic flavour to it.

CINNAMON STICKS: Cinnamon is one of the oldest spices known. It was mentioned in the Bible and was used in ancient Egypt as beverage flavouring, medicine, and an embalming agent. CASHEW NUTS/PASTE: This is a very good source of protein and magnesium. Enjoyable as a snack or as an ingredient, you are sure to reap all of its benefits. The copper found in cashews is vital for the function of enzymes involved in combining collagen and elastin, providing substance and flexibility in bones and joints. In some countries, they have been innovative in terms of bringing out the flavour of this little beauty. Honey can be used to get a sweeter taste – honey roasted cashews. Yum! Yum! For menopausal women, including this in your diet would ensure a more relaxed and pleasant sleep. As we age, cashews have the ability to help with macular degeneration which is more prominent when you are over 50. I can’t think of a reason why a portion a day would be a bad thing. GINGER/GARLIC PASTE: Ginger is a fibrous root used as a seasoning and flavours sweets, in cakes, cookies, breads, and beverages. It is also good in sauces, and fruit dishes, and is often used heavily in Asian cooking. Even our musicians like it so much it has a song named after it Ginger-L.A.X ft Wizkid. Garlic, on the other hand is a very unique clove that is almost noticeable after use. The smell lingers on your hands when used to cook. It also is the worst thing to eat before a first, second, third date. Both herbal roots are used as a cheap home remedy and included in better well-being in
Cinnamon. When mixed with apples when making bread gives you an irresistible piece that smells good and tastes better. The powder can be sprinkled for oatmeal, desserts and sandwiches. We pride ourselves in Wakkis, in doing all the hard work for you. The cooking, the waiting and getting your hands dirty.
