Blocked tubes and pregnancy, what’s the cure? Please is there any chance of becoming pregnant when both tubes are blocked. And is there any treatment for tubular blockage. Fatima Technically speaking it is difficult for a woman with blocked tubes to be pregnant. But practical we have seen where women who had blocked tubes become pregnant. This is because the HSG which is one the standard ways of determining the potency of the tubes has some limitations that could lead to false negative report. For example when there is cornual constriction due to sensitivity to the dye, the tubes may appear blocked. Whereas in reality it is not blocked. Due to the above reason, we normally follow up the HSG with laparoscopy and dye test. This a minor diagnostic, endoscopic investigation to determine potency of the tubes. Even at that we have seen rare occasions when both tubes are found to be blocked during HSG and after laparoscopy and dye test and yet the women gets pregnant but it is rare. It may be due to poor technique. We should note these occasional findings does not justify waiting endlessly for conception

after the findings of bilateral blocked tubes. I have seen a lot women waiting using these rare cases as justification for waiting and before they know it, they are in their menopausal period. In which case even if assisted conception therapy is to be done it has to be with donor eggs and at a much higher cost. Concerning the treatment for blocked tubes, paradoxically the HSG and laparoscopy and dye test could be therapeutic. At these procedures, the substance responsible for the blockage may be dislodged. Another way is to do tubal surgery. Though nowadays with advent of invitro fertilization the art of tubal surgery is being lost gradually among Gynaecologists. This is mainly due to the lower success rate of tubal surgery compared to IVF. Let me state that tubal surgery still has a role especially in the sub Saharan region due to the high cost and availability of assisted conception therapy.

First are you sure you are actually seen a Cardiologist? One of the main problem is people parading themselves to the community about what they are not. I have seen where even well educated couples claiming that they have been seeing a Gynaecologist only to discovered that the person is not even a doctor not to talk of being a Gynaecologist. I did not see where you mentioned

Or could it be that you have not been regular in the follow up? This is another great problem with patients in our environment. I think you need to go back to your doctor if you are sure he is a cardiologist. FASHION WORLD IN 2017 //

What the fashion world will look like this year interview by DORCAS DANIEL & HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU

T

he year 2016 had plenty of memorable fashion moments but the common cliché -New Year, New Start, welcomes new season for the fashion industry to overwhelm fashion lovers with innovative and breathtaking styles. As fashion is said to be fickle, allow 2016 trends to fall by the wayside to usher in the New Year goodies to not only reflect on your lifestyle, but also on your wardrobe. What better way to get the hints of how the fashion world will roll this year, than to find out from great fashion designers, what to expect from the fashion world in 2017.

MAUREEN OBAWEYA, THE BRAIN BEHIND THE MORIN O BRAND. It’s a designer bag brand, which is flying the Nigerian flag in the fashion world. What fashion lovers expect in this year? Fashion Lovers should expect vibrant pallets and earthy hues in clothing lines as well as elegance in a cool and easy manner portrayed in designs. What should we expect from your fashion line this year? Ornamented designs with classic geometric shapes in vibrant colours. We are also launching a number of limited edition lines. Our collection of leather accessories also will be launched What fashion trend do you think will move in this year and reign? Varied versions of prints with an arty influence, elegance portrayed in simple and classic ways and stripes will also feature a lot. How would your brand new promote the ‘buy Nigerian and wear Nigerian campaign’? We are proudly Nigerian

and align with this initiative in what we do by being innovative and ensuring we keep enhancing our production in Nigeria as well as continually train and hone the skills of our artisans to ensure that Made in Nigeria goods are developed to stand with notable global brand. Any plans to make your brand bigger this year? Strong collaborations with other made in Nigeria brands and suppliers, perfecting of our lines,we would also be showcasing our collections both in both local and international fashion shows. Do we hope to see international collaborations? We started reaching out to brands that we would collaborate with last year and this year we hope to consolidate and seal up those partnerships. We have also been approached by showrooms and individuals with the aim of collaborating. So yes we are planning already on agreed areas of collaborations. What’s the one fashion piece, you would advise every woman to have from your designs? The Demure bag which has at least 5 different versions that suit the individual tastes of every woman. Do you think, there is significant interest for Nigerian designers in the country now? Absolutely. We have seen a growing awareness and exposure of Nigerian designers both on the local and International scenes. This is evidenced by the growing numbers of fashion weeks and shows that attract a very wide range of Nigerians. On a concluding note, as a designer of bags, what is that fashion trend you think it’s time to break in this year? Most bag trends are classic and keep being reinvented so I just see modified and enhanced versions of previous designs.

CO V E R

IBRAHIM ABDULMUMINI AMINU, CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF HOUSE OF KAYA. What designs will shape this year’s fashion scene? New patterns and silhouette will shape the fashion scene this year. What should we expect from your fashion line this year? The Kaya woman will reach for new heights this year, She should definitely be ready to cover up in more voluminous sleeves with more strong shoulders. Hopefully marking the end of last year’s much beloved and overdone off the shoulder silhouette. What fashion trend do you think will move into the new year and reign? I am most certain on one hand the bubblegum shade will reign supreme in 2017 and on the other flared sleeves will rage this year. How well does your brand

advocate the buy Nigerian campaign, when it comes to fashion? As a promoter and advocate of ethical fashion and Made in Nigeria products, I have come to the conclusion the best way to promote our craft is to put our best foot out locally and internationally. House of Kaya has plans for this year, You will have to stay tuned to see. Do we hope to see international collaborations? Certainly, without a doubt. We are working to expand our reach to international markets. What’s the one fashion piece, you would advise every woman to have from your designs? Any easy maxi, comfort is key. Do you think there is

significant interest for Nigerian designers in the country now? There is a very large interest for Nigerian designers now with the Buy Nigerian campaign going on. I believe now is the time to prove ourselves to the world at large. On a concluding note, as a fashion designer what is that fashion trend you think is set to break in, this year? A new silhouette should break in 2017.

TESSY OLISEH-AMAIZE, CEO OF TESSLO CONCEPTS. She specializes in creating designs for both genders. What should fashion lovers expect in this year? Mind-blowing collections and a special range of clothing that will be really affordable for middleincome earners. The rest of what I want to do, I will keep as a business secret for now. What should we expect from your fashion line this year? First, for ladies, offshoulder tops were a big deal in 2016 but I doubt that they would make it into the new year as a lead fashion trend. For men, the agbada in all its variations and funky styles has been a big hit since 2015. It moved on to 2016 dominating the fashion scene and even beyond. I think the agbada will keep soaring in 2017 with a lot designers experimenting with new shapes and forms. Also, I see the emergence of slogan and statement t-shirts with words and bold inscriptions taking over in 2017. What fashion trend do you think will move into the new year and reign? I have plans in place to be more aggressive with my marketing and more innovative with my designs. In the past year, the economic recession has slowed down a lot of businesses but 2017 promises to be a year for businesses that are ready to embrace cutting edge creativity and new ways of doing things. How would your brand promote the buy in Nigeria and wear in Nigeria campaign? My brand has always thrived on the vision of “Made in Nigeria.” That’s

why despite bagging a BSc in Fashion in the United Kingdom and winning the Best Fashion Designer Award at the Nigeria Fashion Show (NFS) in 2006 with so many foreign opportunities that followed, I decided to look inwards and build my fashion brand here in Nigeria. So for us at Tesslo, we have been at the forefront of showing the world that the standards you can find anywhere in Europe, America or Asia are equally produced here in Nigeria. If you look at “Billboard”, my most recent menswear collection which was unveiled in September 2016, you will see a jacket made with traditional Yoruba Aso-Oke fabric and a blazer jacket made with the traditional Igbo Isi-Agu fabric. In 2017, we will continue to promote the buy Nigerian, wear Nigerian campaign with some of the best designs you can find from any fashion label anywhere in the world. Do we hope to see international collaborations Fingers crossed... Do you think, there is significant interest for Nigerian designers in the country now? If I understand your question, I believe there is a huge interest by Nigerians both at home and abroad in what Nigerian designers have to offer. The Nigerian market alone is very huge. I doubt that the number of Nigerian designers we have today are able to meet the huge demand from the Nigerian market. Nigerians love their brands. We have

had people place orders for Tesslo designs all the way from the United Kingdom, the United States, South Africa and other parts of the world. Whenever they see our collections online, they are highly impressed with the detailing and excellent finishing. I’m very confident that there’s a constantly growing interest by Nigerians and even foreigners in the work that we do as Nigerian designers. How do you balance creativity with business? For me, creativity is the business itself. In this fashion business, if you are not creative, you might as well close shop. It’s like asking a farmer, how do you balance work with farming. Laughs! In your view has the economy taken a toll on the fashion industry in Nigeria? Of course! Someone who has not eaten does not give a damn about wearing well-tailored clothes. Laughs! And even for the high income spenders, moderation is the now the name of the game. What’s the one fashion

TAMBARI SUNDAY, J A N UA R Y 8, 2017 PAGE 30

CO V E R // FASHION WORLD IN 2017 piece, you would advise every woman to have from your designs? There’s this back cowl-neck dress in my FLOTUS collection that really nailed it for me. I recommend it to every woman who wants to bring out that unique spark of grace in them. The dress is suitable for weddings, red carpets, special evening and cocktail events etc. On a concluding note, as a fashion designer what is that fashion trend you think it’s time to break in this year? Pattern on pattern. I’m yet to see for instance a hybrid of polka dots and Ankara or Ankara and stripes as a fashion trend. Except you are Denrele. Laughs! I would really love to see people who have the courage to pull that off as a fashion trend in 2017. We’ll see.

NIKKI ODU-KHIRAN OF NIKKI KHIRAN COUTURE. What should we expect from your fashion line this year? Nikki Khiran Couture will continue to create clothes that are luxurious, sophisticated, avantgarde but wearable and totally affordable. Infusing African and western elements, we used to do only couture pieces before we started our ready to wear line a few years ago so a lot of people only think we do expensive occasion wears, but we have a large ready to wear line of both day and evening wear. What fashion trend do you think will reign this year? The trends in 2017 will still have an element of the 70s era, fluid shapes, ornate fabrics, lots of rich colour, textured fabrics beaded and embroidered. The plain minimalist era is gone for now,we are in a time when women can express themselves and personality through fashion. How does your brand intend to promote the made in Nigeria and wear in Nigeria campaign? All of our clothes are produced in Nigeria and we have a line of clothing in ethnic prints. But we

have a wide variety in the shop not just African prints,we do our part and Nigeria presently has a lot to offer in terms of fashion but a lot of Nigerians still like to wear designer brands from international designers! They say charity begins at home! Any plans on moving your brand forward and making it bigger this year? We are presently working on an online shop so that our products have a much wider reach and we intend to have a fashion show in Abuja to launch our Abuja store. Any international collaborations in the future? Yes,definitely in the future! We intend to move the brand outside the shires of Nigeria. Do you think there is a significant interest for Nigerian designers in the country now? Yes. When we started off in Nigeria 14 years ago there were only a handful of well-known designers. Now we have a lot of up and coming brands. It’s nice to see the progression of the times.

SHEHU YAKUBU OF SABALI FASHION What do you think fashion lovers should expect this year? The fashion scene in Nigeria is growing very fast. Fashion designers are pushing boundaries to please Nigerians who seek the wow factor in their clothing, so fashion lovers should expect MORE than they have ever gotten. We’re pushing the envelope of what we can do & 2017 will be no exception. What has your fashion line got to offer this year? I just started making suits last year so you should expect a casual and formal wedding collection from me. As an Abuja based designer, I don’t want any groom to spend extra cost on tickets to get a Tuxedo in Lagos when we can give them amazing stuff here. You should also expect a new collection for traditional wear.

Fashion trend that will reign this year. I sense the men will go for more edgy traditional wear than ever & explore more

How do you balance creativity with business? Most creative people focus on being creative and forget that the clothes have to be sold for you to have a business. Over time with plenty of mistakes made I’ve learnt book keeping, marketing, customer relations etc. Recession and the fashion industry, your view? The economy has taken a huge toll on the fashion and entertainment sector. People have to pay rent, feed themselves, pay school fees and do necessary things before they think of extras or luxuries but you know women shopping is therapy for us and people have to wear clothes regardless. One fashion piece you would advise every woman to have from your designs? One of our patchwork dresses. We have different versions and design s there’s no two that are alike. Each one is a work of art. What is that fashion trend you think it’s time to break this year? I would say women wearing

risky colors. For the ladies, I think their love & acceptance for big elaborate sleeves will be triumphant this year. How would your brand new promote the buy Nigerian and wear Nigerian campaign? We have already started by working very hard to standardize our products with friendly prices. By God’s grace, this year we will acquire modern sewing machines to push the line of our output. Any plans on moving your label forward and making it bigger this year? This year, we will focus on ready to wear and improve the quality of our bespoke services. With the purchase of modern machines, we will also improve general product quality. Do we hope to see international collaborations? I don’t want to spoil any surprises, but there are some plans with another African

AWWAL ISMAIL AND FATIMA UMAR, CEO AND MD OF MIYETTI APPAREL What do you think fashion lovers should expect this year? In keeping with 2017, fashion lovers should expect a significant change this year because there is a lot of young talented fashion designers in Nigeria today that have high level of skills and proficiency in the industry. Also a mix of western and African designs will be more synthesized together. Furthermore there is going to be a lot of fashion design shows and events as to create awareness for the new and upcoming designers. What should we expect from your fashion line this year? Actually I have attended a lot of events, royal weddings and occasions and the fact is I am translating what I have learned there so far. The line is expected to boost its marketing sector and advertisement because investing in such aspect boost the label, creates aspiration and awareness to people interested. However, the brand will focus more on smart outfits, unique and innovative designs that will suite the Nigerian style. What fashion trend do you think will move into the new year and reign? There could be a trend towards warmer climate as the country is kind of hot I expect to see lighter materials and simple designs throughout the year. Also, if you focus on the youths and elders there is now a similarity in the way dressing is done for example youths of nowadays dress extremely maturely and corporate so It is expected to see a similar way of dressing in everyone.

How would your brand new promote the buy Nigerian and wear Nigerian campaign? This is a brilliant question. The brand tries its best to be 100% Nigeria which focuses on Nigerian materials to produce its product. As I stated earlier the brand will be active in marketing and advertising to show the quality, unique designs, and also efficiency of its product. Furthermore, to promote the “buy Nigeria” our standard should be equal to the foreign ones if not better so that every one will patronize and promote the country’s product I think with such efforts it will help in achieving the goal. What plans do you have for moving your label forward and making it bigger this year? Starting, running and growing a business is a lot of handwork, along with long hours, sacrifice and ton of stress. I and my partner the MD/CD (Fatima Umar) have been focusing on the aspect of promoting and moving the label forward by working hard and using the 8 characteristics of the company as our priority which are determination, passion, resilience, confidence, vision, flexibility, effective communication and risk tolerance. Also we want to concentrate on adverts, networking by using social networks sides, blogs because starting a fashion blog is surefire way to get our designs noticed, participating in fashion shows around the world if possible and also dressing our friends and Nigerian celebrities as well, because if your friends dress in our

PAGE 31 TAMBARI SUNDAY, J A N UA R Y 8, 2017

own garments it’s essential as it advertise the brand. Also picking up a Nigerian artist for example Miyetti Apparel, Patoranking is an ambassador and he wears our products which helps in promoting the brand in a significant aspect. Do we hope to see international collaborations? Actually I think the international world is now having the perception of coming into Nigeria to collaborate with our fashion aspect because the quality and designs are of standard globally which can compete anywhere in the world. Nigerian fashion designers are creative and full of talent that suites almost every nation. What’s the one fashion piece, you would advise every man/woman to have from your designs? First of all from the men’s perspective we have an elegant casual kaftan that someone can dress up for work, meetings and even events as it has a concept of different style in one. I won’t go into the details but the design is called the Patch outfit because it has a unique look with a bit of mixed patches of materials on it. On the other hand, if u are a lady don’t miss out the casual kaftan tops they are light, casual and comfortable which can be worn at anytime and anywhere it is acceptable and unique, in fact some of the designs come with extra features which involves side inner pockets because nowadays ladies find it difficult to keep their phones so we invented that feature to ease the stress of holding items

what doesn’t suit their shape or size just because it’s in fashion!Dress to flatter your shape and curves. It’s more flattering. Not everyone can wear a fitted dress. No one wants to see bumps and bulges. Ask a professional for advice when you walk into a store. That’s why abroad we have stylists!

brand. What’s the one fashion piece, you would advise every man to have from your designs? Every man needs a Sabali Kaftan in his closet. Perfect combination of comfort and a unique style. We just do ours differently. Do you think there is significant interest for Nigerian designers in the country now? There has always been interest, but the improved integration & communication channels via social media has amplified the awareness and interest. More than ever, Nigerian designers are now easier to know and reach. On a concluding note, as a fashion designer what is that fashion trend you think it’s time to break this year? Gentlemen, I think it’s time to say goodbye to oversized chain watches. Less is more. like phones, car keys and wallets. Do you think there is significant interest for Nigerian designers in the country now? Every Nigerian designer is mainly interested on reaching out to people to dress in their own unique way and style. So I think creativity in designs is what the designers are really focusing on nowadays.

dour can be very offensive and embarrassing and no matter how regular we are with our bathing routine, there comes a point when we are left wondering what in the world is causing that stink in us.Here are tips to avoidthem.

1. Shave underarms - lots of hair under your arms can create a swampy environment for bacteria.Hair can be porous, meaning it absorbs odour and can show the evaporation of sweat. 2. Apply vinegar - whether its apple or white, it can help lower PH level of skin for anti-bacteria environment. Its recommended because bacteria cannot stand or survive in acidity and the smell will dissipate. For best results splash when you get out of shower, but not immediately after shaving. 3. Deodorants - these give you sweet and lasting fragrance...it could come in different forms i.e. roll on, body sprays, perfumes, colognes etc. Applying this whenever you bathe or anytime you want to refresh helps you suppress the oozing odour from your armpit. 4. by HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU

This staple English food is the best comfort food there is and you can even make with leftovers. With it being relatively easy to make and a mix of meat and carbs, opting for Shepard’s pie is a delicacy that everyone can and will enjoy.

Shepard’s pie INGREDIENTS 1 1/2 to 2 pounds potatoes (about 3 large potatoes), peeled and quartered • 8 tablespoons butter • 1 medium onion, chopped • 2 lbs ground round beef • 1/2 cup beef broth • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce • Salt, pepper, other seasonings of choice

DIRECTIONS Place the peeled and quartered

potatoes in a medium sized pot. Cover with at least an inch of cold water, add a teaspoon of salt and bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer and cook until tender. While the potatoes are cooking, melt 4 tablespoons of the butter in a large sauté pan on medium heat. Add the chopped onions and cook until tender, about 6 to 10 minutes. Add ground beef to the pan with the onions until brown and season with salt and pepper. Add the Worcestershire sauce and beef broth. Bring the broth to a simmer and reduce heat to low and cook slowly for 10 minutes until the beef is fully cooked. You can add

more broth to stop it from drying out while cooking. When the potatoes are done cooking remove them from the pot and place them in a bowl with the remaining 4 tablespoons of butter and mash. Add some salt and pepper to taste. Preheat oven to 400°F. Spread the beef in a casserole or baking dish and then spread the mashed potatoes over the beef evenly. You can rough up the surface with a fork and sprinkle some cheddar cheese if you wish. Place in the oven and cook until browned and bubbling for about 30 minutes. Serve while hot.

Simple makeup tips for dry season

W

inter comes with gusts of wind nearly knocking you over and drying your skin out to the max, making it hard to protect your face from the harsh winter conditions and keeping a makeup that glows. But don’t worry — your makeup will look fresh with these few tips: Clean your face with gentle ingredients: Maintain a clean skin with washing your face with something gentle and mild that removes makeup, tones, and cleanses without rinsing or letting water dry out your skin in the dry season. Use products with avocado and coconut oil. Prep your skin at night: Moisturise your skin at night as it’ll be easier to run foundation

over it when you get ready as this provides deep and intense hydration. Use this once a week and see how much your face needs it. Opt for lightweight coverage: For those that have very dry skin, go for oily foundations with a built-in primer that gives your skin a soft-focus moisture effect. Ease up with make-up quantity: As dry season makes the skin so sensitive and dry, ease up on makeup quantity. A little blush or bronzer on your cheeks will do. Strong brows, a simple eye-shadow, long lasting lip gloss with hydrating contents and mascara to make your eyes pop-out is all you need to look fresh. With additional information from the internet
