HALITOSIS 1.) Please which advise can you give for my persistent problems. The problem is that I use to wash my mouths about ten times a day but always the abnormality and discomfort is still there. I use different types of Maclean’s including Oral B but no improvement. Khalid Kano 2.) Please I need your help. I have problem of bad breath, no matter how many times I brush my mouth, the odour still remains. What shall do? Amira The two questions are similar. Bad odour is not an uncommon problem . It is also known as halitosis. It affects up to 30% of general population worldwide. The bad breadth could be from the mouth, throat or tonsils. Anaerobuc sulfur producing bacteria has been implicated. Common causes include xerostomia or dry mouth, This could be due to long period of speaking, alcohol or smoking . Foods like onions, garlic, refined processed sugar and coffee among others can make halithosis worse. Poor dental hygiene which is not likely in these cases, could also be a cause. Allowing plaques to accumulate makes room for bacteria which can cause halitosis. Let me also mention that it is not enough to brush but also using appropriate technique of brushing is important . Systemic diseases can cause halitosis . These include: diabetes, liver disease, chronic lung diseases, renal diseases and metabolic disorders. People on medications that can lead to dry mouth are at risk of halitosis. Antidepressants and antihistamines have been implicated . Steps to take to treat or prevent these include:

proper oral care, avoid dry mouth, use of mouth wash and taking dietary supplement like Vitamin C, E, & D. I will suggest tboth persons visit the dentist for proper examination and treatment

As per the second question, it is likely to be hormonal imbalance, though you did not state your age. Have you been having oligomenorrhea (menstrual cycle length more than 35 days and less than 6 months) before? What is your body mass index? Are you on any form of family planning? This is because some hormonal contraceptives can be the cause. Also if you around forty five years, it could be a peri-

The collection included intricate detailing, extravagance and distinctive layering of unique vintage. Pieces were layered and beaded in unique patterns influenced by vintage furniture such as Console, Chesterchaise and Louis Baroque. S

hafa’u Ladan Yusuf was born 21 of August, 1972, she is also an indigene of Bauchi State, precisely from Anguwan Alkali Aminu, Bauchi Local Government Area and a Fulani by tribe. She is a lawyer currently on the lower bench as a chief magistrate and also the chairman of Magistrates’ Association of Nigeria, Bauchi State branch. The first born of her parents, the first of 13 siblings, nine boys and four girls. She is married to Brigadier General LB Yusuf retired who presently is the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters. They are blessed with four lovely children - the eldest, Zahraddeen, is 23. Who is an architect who would be through with his Master’s Degree in Beijing this June insha Allah. The second one is Sadeeq, he is 16, in S.S.3 at a secondary school in Abuja. The third is a girl, Nana Khadija, she is 12 in J.S. 2 in Gombe. The youngest is also a girl, Ummisalma, she is 9 and in Basic 5 in Bauchi.

Educational background I started my education with Qur’anic school when I was very little, then Shekal Primary School in 1978; in 1983 I went to Federal Government Girls’ College Bauchi. In 1991 I was admitted to read Civil Law at University of Jos but I was unable to make it that year until the 1993/94 session, already married with a handful 7 months old son (Zahraddeen). I graduated with an LL.B in 2000 and proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, Lagos Campus in 2001. In 2002, I graduated from law school with a BL. In 2003 I was employed by the Bauchi State Government as a state counsel with the Ministry of Justice and in 2008 I was elevated to the lower bench as a Senior Magistrate. In 2009, I went to the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies(NIALS), University of Lagos Campus at Akoka for a Master’s Degree(LL.M) on Legislative Drafting. Career As a Chief Magistrate and a Principal District Court Judge, I preside over both criminal and civil cases under the inherent powers of the court and upon such jurisdiction given to my court by the Laws of Bauchi State. What growing up was like As a typical Hausa-Fulani girl growing up in the North, in an extended family setting with lots of uncles, aunts and cousins far and near in relation, life was fun, with lots of

laughter, noise and small quarrels. Challenges faced in life The challenges I faced were managing a home with kids and school whilst my husband was always away on military postings within or outside the country. I started school with one son and had two other sons while I was there. From the two I had while in school, I lost one in my fourth year and had the other some weeks before my final exams. The Dean of Law then, Dr. Jamila M. Nasir(God bless her soul) used to help me strap him to her back him

while I wrote my exams. I also went to the Law School with a baby that was barely six months old and on exclusive breast feeding. I used to leave him with a nanny outside the lecture theatre so that I could hear him anytime he cried and I would sneak out and feed him. Life’s lessons Life has taught me to try and always tell the truth in every situation I find myself, hence if I can tell the truth why then should I tell a lie and thus I am a very straight forward and blunt person. I always try to say it like it is.

GROWING UP, I HAD ALWAYS ASPIRED TO BE A LAWYER, GO TO COURT AND MAKE SUBMISSIONS LIKE I USED TO WATCH THEM DO ON A TV PROGRAMME BACK THEN CALLED ‘CROWN COURT’.

My aspirations as a child Growing up, I had always aspired to be a lawyer, go to court and make submissions like I used to watch them do on a TV programme back then called ‘Crown Court’. ‘Crown Court’ was a British programme. I loved their dress code, the confidence a lot of them exuded, their manner of speech was awesome to me even though I could barely grasp the meaning or true essence of what they were saying most of the time but I knew that they were mighty important. Fond childhood memories I miss I miss the stories my maternal grandmother used to tell me whenever I visited her at her house. Her husband was into tobacco(Angale) business and she used to help him mold it under the moonlight, while she did that she used to entertain us with stories(Tatsuniya). I really miss that. My joys of motherhood Just waking up one day and seeing your kids grown into such fine gentlemen and ladies with lofty dreams. That is mighty joyous.

That I shall continue to cherish till the day I draw my last breath. Three fashion accessories I always have on me Wrist watch, a ring and my veil. How I met my husband I met my husband at a friend’s house in early 1992. Attribute of his that I cherish most My husband is an epitome of humility and modesty. He is humble and modest in both his speech and his deeds, however, he is as firm as you can find. My husband is the finest officer and gentleman you can ever get. Where I love to take a vacation My best travel destination is no doubt, China. It is wild and tame at the same time. The Chinese are a people very inquisitive in nature and whenever they see foreigners in their country, they do not look down on you but rather look at you as an opportunity. How I love to relax I relax by reading on my bed. I can read anything. Last book I read A book called‘Men are from Mars’ and ‘Women are from Venus’ by John Gray and I recommend that book to every man or woman in a relationship. I learnt that men and women operate on different frequencies. We communicate in entirely different ways yet we are the same in a lot of ways. The book taught me to understand some masculine behaviors that I would ordinarily not understand, hence, I relate better with my husband. I know when his no means no and also when not to complain in order not to nag.

LOOKING BACK, I WOULD TELL A YOUNGER ME TO TAKE LIFE MORE SERIOUSLY ESPECIALLY IN SECONDARY SCHOOL THAN I EVER DID. I WAS A LITTLE REBEL BACK THEN, A NON-CONFORMIST IF YOU LIKE. I NEVER HAD COMPLETE NOTES ON ANY SUBJECT, I WOULD NEVER DISTURB MY SLEEP TO READ ANY BOOK OTHER THAN A NOVEL My favourite food and drink My favourite food is Tuwo with miyarkuka while my favourite drink is chilled kununaya. My style Anything modern and comfortable Favourite fashion designer Vera Wang My favourite perfume, shoes and bags I love perfumes so much that I do not really have a favourite, I can spend my last kobo on perfumes. However, La Petite Robe Noire(My little Black Dress) by Guerlain is always on a pedestal of its own. I love Spanish shoes and bags over Italians because I find them more comfortable and classy. Mum’s advice that stuck till date Whatever anyone can do, I also can but only if I try. This is what she always said to me. My advice to women who aspire to be like me For women who want to be like me, I say strive on, work hard, with diligence and perseverance, the sky is your stepping stone. My secret to looking glam at my age My secret is contentment. I am contented with my life and I do not give any person the right to dictate my happiness. I am me and no one else. My role models in life My mother is my role model, yes, that is a cliché I know but it is the naked truth. Aside my mother, there are other women that I look up to but I shall discuss just four of them. They are; H. E. Aisha Buhari, Hon. Justice Fati Lami Abubakar, Hajiya Hadiza M. A. Abubakar and my boss Hon. Justice Rabi T. Umar. These ladies have one thing in common and that is humility. I hope and pray that I get to be like them when I grow up. H. E. Aisha Buhari I met for the

first time after she had become the first lady. I went into her presence with trepidation but upon sighting her, my fear dissipated. She is charming and very graceful with a very friendly disposition. Hon. Justice Fati Lami Abubakar I have known the longest, I have known her for over 20years as witty, intelligent and very humble. She is always ready with motherly and professional advice anytime I am in need of same. Hajiya Hadiza M. A. Abubakar the first lady of Bauchi State I met due to the nature of my husband’s assignment.A real woman of substance, pious, intelligent and also very humble. She welcomes all with open arms and an infectious smile. Hon. Justice Rabi T. Umar is the CJ of Bauchi State, I have also known her for a long time as unassuming, gentle and down to earth. Underneath her gentle disposition, Justice Rabi is as solid as a rock.She always has a shoulder ready for us to cry on, she listens to everyone with understanding. She is a woman with lots of grace. What I would tell a younger me Looking back, I would tell a younger me to take life more seriously especially in secondary school than I ever did. I was a little rebel back then, a non-conformist if you like. I never had complete notes on any subject, I would never disturb my sleep to read any book other than a novel. I also never liked the concept of seniority and I used to voice out my displeasure at any senior who attempted to bully me or others that I knew. So,if cutting back your hours isn’t an option or you simply don’t want to, try these few ways to eat and live healthfully, no matter how time-crunched your work is! * Make healthy meals your meals a mostInstead of a dish of candy on your desk, try a basket of apples or trail mix, you are much more likely to munch on the fruits and vegetables. Some of the best snacks to have on hand during the workday are a mix of protein plus produce or whole grains. This combination of protein and fiber is filling, helps steady blood sugar and provides many other key nutrients to help your body and brain perform optimally. * Water is not a gamble option,because the hydration will do you good, but for those of us with office jobs, the best thing about guzzling H2O is that it forces you to get up from your desk and walk to the bathroom several times a day. The truth is, sitting for too long can kill you. When you’re inactive, your metabolism

Here are few tips on how to style your child. * Make a shopping list - listing down the clothes you need to buy for your child is important because with a list at hand, you can shop easily by grouping what and where to get what you need and accomplish your task efficiently. * Choose the right sizes - don’t ever get tempted into buying a bigger size, thinking your child may outgrow the size...which you may argue you are only been economical; your

APPROPRIATE SLEEPING TIPS FOR KIDS

leep is very vital to our health.The amount of sleeping time depends on your child’s age. Newborns, for example, ‘nap’ several hours a day, whereas 2-year-olds may sleep one to three hours each day spread over one to two naps. On the other hand, many 4- to 6-year-olds may not require a nap at all. Generally though, too many naps or long naps during the day can interfere with the ability to sleep well at night. So here are healthy tips to guide you: 1. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule – The child’s bed time and wake up time should be about the same every day of the week, regardless if it is school days, weekend or holidays. A steady wake up time sets the day and allows adequate sleep pressure to build up by late evening to allow for quicker sleep at an appropriate time at night. 2. Exercise daily – Engaging your child to exercise as part of his or her daily routine at a young age will help establish it as a daily life-long healthy routine. 3. Don’t go to bed on an empty stomach – Make sure your child doesn’t go to bed hungry. Provide a light snack such as a glass of milk, a piece of fruit or cereal and milk. Avoid offering a heavy meal within 1 to 2 hours of bedtime, as this can hinder

sleep. 4. Try and Avoid caffeinated products – Kids should avoid products that contain caffeine in the late afternoon/evening. 5. Plan up to 1 hour of quiet time before bed – Before bedtime every night, allow your child to set aside up to 1 hour for calm, enjoyable activities, such as listening to quiet soft music or reading a book. Hygiene and bath routines may be helpful. 6. The bedroom environment – Your child’s bedroom should be quiet, comfortable and dark but a nightlight is acceptable for children afraid of a dark bedroom;

do not put a television set in your child’s bedroom. It is fine to allow security objects, such as a special blanket or stuffed animal, to be a part of the bedtime routine. Use the bedroom for quiet time and sleeping only. In your final interaction of the evening, give a hug or a kiss, say goodnight to your child, turn off your child’s bedroom light, and leave the room. The final interaction should be predictable, deliberate, and yet sufficiently warm and reassuring to your child. Support bed time by keeping the rest of the house quiet and relatively dark. Wake up to coconut pancakes by HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU

W

hat’s a better way to start the day than with coconut pancakes? The coconut milk and shredded coconut make thicker and fluffier pancakes. Consisting a mix of dairy, carbohydrate and fat and nutrients too, it won’t be considered a crime if you choose to enjoyy this tasty morning delicacy every other day. These coconut pancakes are best enjoyed with syrup, fresh whipped cream or fresh fruits. You might even find some waking up earlier than usual to the tantalizing smell filling the house.

Coconut pancakes Ingredients • 1¼ cup all-purpose flour • 2 tablespoons sugar • 1 teaspoon baking powder • ½ teaspoon baking soda • ¼ teaspoon salt • ¼ cup shredded, sweetened coconut • 1 egg, beaten • ½ cup buttermilk • ¾ cup coconut milk • 1 tablespoon melted butter • Additional butter for coating cooking surface

Directions Lightly mix all dry ingredients together then add all wet ingredients to the beaten egg and combine well. Then mix the wet ingredients into the dry and stir until incorporated. Don’t over mix. In a hot skillet or frying pan, add butter to lightly coat the pan. Over medium heat, drop equal rounds of the pancake batter and cook until bubbles begin to pop in the centre of pancake or for about 2 minutes. Flip pancake and cook for an additional minute or so until golden brown. Serve with a topping of your choice.

With the chicken marinated in herbs and spices and sautéed vegetables, it can probably end up stored in the fridge to be reheated and enjoyed with rice.

The agbalumo or the African star apple is back in season and before it disappears once more, we might as well make the best of it. The agbalumo drink has unique, tangy taste and is very easy and quick to prepare. It is bursting with vitamins and minerals too.

Ingredients • 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 pounds skinless, boneless chicken breasts • Salt • 2 tablespoons canola oil • 1 large onion, sliced lengthwise • 3 bell peppers of various colors, sliced into 1/4-inch strips Marinade • 2 tablespoons lime juice • 3 tablespoons olive oil • 1 garlic clove, minced • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder • 1/2 jalapeno, seeded and minced • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro Directions Cut thick chicken breasts in half, horizontally. Mix all the marinade ingredients together in a glass or plastic container and add the chicken then mix well. Cover and allow it to marinate at room temperature for 1 hour or up to 8 hours in the fridge (if preparing it the night before). Remove the chicken from the marinade. Wipe off most of the marinade and sprinkle the chicken pieces with salt. Heat a large cast iron frying pan on high heat for 1 to 2 minutes. Add a tablespoon of canola oil to the pan. As soon as the oil begins to smoke,

lay the chicken breast pieces in the pan. Turn the pieces over after 2 to 3 minutes and cook for another 2-3 minutes until well seared on the second side. Once the chicken is cooked, move to a chopping board with aluminum foil to rest for 5 minutes. While the chicken is resting, cook the onions and peppers. Add another tablespoon of oil to the frying pan. Heat on high. As soon as the oil is hot, add the onions and peppers to the pan. Use a metal spatula to scrape up some of the browned bits from the chicken and stir to coat the onions and peppers with the oil and brown bits. Spread the onions and peppers in an even layer in the pan. Allow to cook for 2 to 3 minutes until sautéed and browned. Add the chicken and toss in the pan. Your fajita chicken is ready to be served.

Directions Wash and squeeze out the juice from the fruit, adding the flesh and a cup of water/soda water into the blender. Discard the seeds. Blend, add the honey, then blend some more. Strain into a glass containing ice and serve.

It is also a much healthier alternative to your regular vanilla ice cream. This recipe cuts down the calories yet still full of mouthwatering creaminess. Ingredients 1 ½ low fat milk 2 ripe, fresh avocados, seeded and peeled ½ cupsugar 1 tablespoon lemon or lime juice 1cup low fat coconut milk Mint sprig, chopped Vanilla bean, chopped Directions Pour the milk, avocados, sugar, and lemon/lime juice in a blender. Add in the coconut milk along additional flavorings such as mint or vanilla. Freeze the mixture till frozen and serve.
