don’t work. This year started on a good note with those in the know bringing forth fashion ideas that will transcend many seasons. This year’s fashion is visibly bold and dramatic. There can’t be a better time than now to express your
personal style when buying into the trends. Even if you don’t follow trends, you can make choices that will make you a game-changer. Again, drama and style have met and created a most formidable force. So, have lots of fun as this has just started.

I want to be like Margret Thatcher, a woman of very strong will
Mrs. Suzan Ada Ajenge was born in 1964 in Makurdi, Benue State. She started her primary education in 1969 at the St. Francis Primary School in Otukpo and later went to the St. Annes Secondary School, also in Otukpo in 1974 and graduated in 1979. In that same year, Mrs. Ajenge enrolled for A-Level at the School of Basic Studies, Ugbokulo and graduated in 1981. Consequently, she gained admission into the Department of Political Science, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, and graduated in 1984. After some years, she decided to go for a master’s degree programme in Public Administration. Ajenge started her career at the Benue State University as a personnel officer but later joined her husband in Abuja where she got a job in the Federal Road Safety Commission in 1996 as a chief road commander. She also worked in the Administration and Finance Department for seven years, as well as the corps secretary’s office for another two years. She was later deployed to Niger State as the sector head of operation, where she worked for almost four years before she was moved back to Gwagwalada where she only spent six weeks and was transferred to the headquarters to work in the Department of N.V.A. She was there for another two months before she was again transferred to Nasarawa State as sector commander for about four years. She was also transferred to Delta State as sector commander, where she stayed for about a year until she was nominated to study at the NIPSS, Kuru, Plateau State, where she bagged an award of mni. Mrs. Susan Ada Ajenge is presently the FCT sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission. The proud mother of four she spoke with Tambari about her career, childhood dreams and many more.

Childhood days Growing up was fun. My mother did not get the opportunity to go to school, but she had the passion for education. Her ambition was to see all of her children go to school to the fullest. She also used to tell me how I would one day grow up to even drive big cars like societal women we used to see on our way to the market. She encouraged us. And because I wanted to be an improved version of her, I never rested until I got what I wanted. I pursued my career with passion. My father was a senior civil servant. He was moved from Shemdam, Panshim and Gboko before he finally retired. My ambition As a child I had always wanted to be a medical doctor because I saw women suffer a lot during childbirth. Sometimes they lose their lives in the process. I wanted to make a difference in our community. I was a science student, but I had some challenges along the line and went for arts subjects. I also developed phobia for blood and dead bodies whenever I visited hospitals. That was also part of the reasons I changed my course of study. Motherhood experience Being a mother is the sweetest thing on earth. I got married at the age of 16, immediately after my secondary school. This was because my mother believed that I was pretty and disciplined; hence I should get married before furthering my education. That was the condition she gave me; because I wanted to go to the university, I agreed to get married. There was a long age gap between me and my husband. He was a patient man. Initially, I didn’t want to get pregnant because I was shy, but he was patient with me until my final year in the university. That was when I took in and gave birth at the age of 21. It was a wonderful experience. I thank God for giving me children. Joggling motherhood and career I am a very ambitious person. Right from my childhood days I have always wanted to be independent. This has kept me going even when I found myself in this challenging career. I did not want to give up. When it comes to my official assignment, I don’t compromise for anything. Being a mother and an ambitious woman are on different lines, but I manage and reconcile both at the end of the day. I am a mother, a public servant and a home keeper. My children are very understanding.
I also had a very understanding husband. He was very encouraging when he was
I give it to my children by taking them out myself so we can all spend time.
Role models I have lots of them. But Margret Thatcher was a woman of very strong will. For her to succeed in the midst of men she had to go extra miles. I want to see myself like that.
Definition of fashion I am a very simple person. If I am not in my uniform and I don’t really fancy make-up. I love to look natural.

How I relax Relaxation is hardly there because the job is tasking. But if I have the slightest chance
Favourite holiday spot I love the Obudu Cattle Ranch in Cross River State. If I had the chance, I would love to take them to Dubai.
Keeping fit If I am able to wake up in time I do some aerobics exercise. As a uniform personnel we have games we do on weekly basis.

Favourite dish I am from the Idoma-speaking part of Benue State, so our main dish there has to do with yam. I love pounded yam and I can eat it all the time. My joyous moment What gives me joy is being able to keep the family in peace. Also, providing for my children even after my husband died is the
greatest thing that God has done for me. Legacies I want to be known with humility. What put me off is pride. I want to be part of lots of people’s lives by positively assisting them. This is because if you are able to feed someone, believe me, that person will never forget you in his/her lifetime.

Be a gentleman in blue BY Pupwaya Timothy Dibal
B
lue is known as the colour of the sea and the sky. It is therefore associated with calmness, influence, honesty, cleanliness and spirituality. These positive qualities are the reasons why most men choose blue as their colour. Blue and pink both represent calmness, but while pink is considered a feminine colour, blue is considered masculine. When you wear blue as a man, it represents how peaceful you are. Also, keep in mind that people are more likely to remember something with a blue background, so you can wear a blue shirt to pass a message you want others to remember.

MENSTRUAL CHALLENGE FOR SEVEN YEARS My wife has been having menstrual challenge for seven years now. Sir, the menses comes different times; if it comes on 24th this month, the next could be 5th. She is using Combination 3 now, is it proper? Please, help me sir. Thank you. Olarinde, Kano
PAIN AFTER YOGA EXERCISE I am 19 years old and slim teenager. I have been having joint and muscle pain after yoga exercise, but the pain will stop the next day. I do it four days per week. As a virgin, my friend told me that the pain will affect my virginity and I am worried. Doctor, should I stop it? But I like exercise and I want t keep fit. Please help me out. Siyamah, Kano. I must commend you for the determination to keep fit. In this age of sedentary lifestyle there is no proper playground for exercise in most schools, little or no inter-house sports, lack of adequate exercise is common which results into many medical problems, including obesity with its associated complications. Regular moderate exercise is not only beneficial medically, but mentally and psychologically too. Yoga does not involve strenuous exercise. Generally, when you start exercises, some do feel pains but would be after sometime. It is not true that yoga exercises will make you lose your virginity. I will encourage you to continue.
NORMAL HAEMATINIC REQIUREMENT IN PREGNANCY What are the normal haematinic requirements in pregnancy? There has been the craze to take different drugs: orthodox or herbal during pregnancy. Some individuals even leave their medical practitioners who do not give multiple prescriptions. For uncomplicated pregnancy, the two drugs required on a daily basis are fersolate and folic acid. The actual dosage of folic acid required is 400 800 micrograms per day even at the peak, including lactation period and one tablet of folic acid 5mg is more than adequate. It is also adequate when one is managing anaemia or low blood level. The next drug required is fersolate. Under a normal circumstance, one tablet of fersolte (the red tablet) that is 200mg, is adequate to supply the elemental iron required. There may be need to increase the dosage of fersolate in cases of anaemia in pregnancy. Also, in case of management of anaemia in pregancy you may need to add Vitamin C, also known as ascobic acid, which will help in the absorption of iron. Concerning the combined haematinics like the one stated in last edition, there are the advantages of single dosaging. It may also be beneficial in few patients who have GI upset with fersolate. Most of them are expensive in comparison with fersolate and folic acid.
Please, always include name and address when sending your health enquiries to us. Thank you
Has she delivered before? Is infertility part or even the main complaint? The 24th and 5th are too close. Do you mean it will not come until the 5th of the next month? That is, it exceeds 35 days? What is her weight? Does she have hair growth in the chin and cheek? If the menses is short, that is less than 20 days, then Combination 3 can restore it to normal regular menses. But if it is greater than 30 days cycle length and with associated infertility, Combination 3 may still be used, but you may need to address the issue of infertility. If all other things like male factor and tubes are normal, then ovarian stimulation, follicular tracking and timed intercourse might be more appropriate. I will advise you to see your doctor and let him/her refer you to the gynaecologist in your organisation (as stated in your SMS). If there is no gynaecologist in your own organisation’s hospital, then ask for referral to your sister organisation. I am sure there is a gynaecologist in their hospital in Kano.
I AM WORRIED Doctor, I need your candid advice. I am 44 years old now and have been married for 13 years but cannot meet my wife for more than 30mins. What is wrong please? A.D This is normal and very okay compared with most. What I will advise is for you to relax and start again.

KANNY WOOD
I’m very passionate about reinventing the entertainment industry - Veezyblaze BY Ibrahim Musa Giginyu
Ulu Vincent Chijioke, also known as Veezyblaze, recently released a single track album. He is a 26-year-old undergraduate of the University of Jos in Plateau State. The Kano-based musician, who is also a movie actor and a member of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), spoke on his dream and musical career and many more.
Biography I was born in Owerri, Imo State 26 years ago. I am a final year student of Economics at the University of Jos, Plateau State. I am from a family of five - four boys and a girl. And I am the third in the family. Though my mother is late, she was a very loving mother. She was always there for us. My dad is a retired military officer who served the Nigerian Army faithfully. Today, he is a successful practising engineer. Music as a career I believe that the Nigerian entertainment industry needs a positive revolution. I am very passionate about reinventing the entertainment industry. I am very optimistic that by the time I am through with what I am researching on presently I will surely and properly hit the music scene with a big bang. I want to prove to the world that there are talents in Nigeria; that is why I recently released a single track titled, Slow Down, which is making waves in most of Nigeria’s radio stations. However, the single is having a massive download right now
on the internet. Similarly, I have already commenced work on producing a video for the single track, which I hope to release as soon as it is concluded. Let me say, so far so good, the single Slow Down is well accepted by fans and music lovers nationwide. I am trying to live out my belief that if Nigerian artistes exhibit their full potentials, the nation would equal the ingenuity of Hollywood. We don’t need to copy because we can do ours; that is why my kind of genre, musically speaking, is Afro pop. Sometimes I spice it up with a little of R&B as well as soul and reggae stuff. Source of musical inspirations I draw my inspiration from the happenings around me, mainly current and past situations in the country, as well as the love that permeates inside the human species because Nigeria is an issue-driven country. We have more than enough to sing about. All these I put together as lyrics, which I compose mainly at the middle of the night when there are less noise and disturbances.
Wishes I want to keep the Jos tradition which has produced chart-busting artistes in the past, according to available records. It is no longer a story that artists like P-Square, TuFace Idibia, Ice Prince, Kelvin Pam, the late MC Longs, Jeremiah Gyang, Panem Percy Paul, and Jim Iyke all started from Jos. I feel elated whenever such superstars trace their success history to Jos. Even in the area of sports, the like of Mikel Obi is there. And there are others. Therefore, to me, Jos has a huge tradition of superstars and opportunities. For instance, there is this new kid on the blog who just thrilled every music lover recently. His name is Charass and he is from Jos. These are some of the guys I want to emulate in order to keep the tradition of those I want to refer to as the ‘Tin City Squad’. I strongly believe that this tradition will linger for a long time. Next level I am currently researching to come out
with a completely new genre of music that will musically shake the world to ground level. I hope this would be my contribution towards reinventing the nation’s entertainment scene. However, I can’t deny the fact that it has been very tough actually, especially because of the course I am reading. It’s not been easy as I have to travel a lot to push my career in entertainment and at the same time return back to face my study. However, most times I have had to skip lectures and even tests. But I have never missed examinations. In the overall context, God has been there for me, and to him I give the glory. Relationship I am not married, but my kind of woman must be energetic and inspiring. She must be that girl that should be ready to support what I am doing; ready to support my career because entertainment is my life. Though I have not set a time to settle down, however, when I reach a certain level, that project can come. But for now, it is my music and my movie.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS IN IGBOLAND BY Pupwaya Timothy Dibal
T
hese musical tools are used primarily by masquerade, dance, and musical groups during their festivals activities like; rituals, spiritual and cultural events as well as births of new born and funerals. They are :
EKWE - “Slit-drum” The EKWE (Silt-drum) is a tree trunk, open throughout its length from two rectangular places at its ends and a horizontal slit that connects the opening. The size of the slit-drum depends on its use and significance. Its significance includes use as musical instrument at coronation, cultural events and rituals. The different sounds of the drum summon the people at the monarch’s palaces, or town squares.
OGENE
EKWE
OGENE - “Gong” The ogene (Gong) is the most important metal instrument among the Igbo people. They were made originally in bronze but, in modern time, are mainly made of common metal as a bulging surface in an oval shape rim. It is hit about its rim by a stick to produce different tunes. The Ogene (gong) accompanies dances, songs, religious and secular ceremonies, and its tunes have been developed to transmit messages by a sort of lyric prose. IGBA - “Cylinder-drum” The Igba (Cylinder-drum) is a piece of hollow wood covered at one end with animal hide held down tight with fasteners. The artist carries it over his shoulder with the help of a shoulder strap. The artist produces the sound by beating on the animal hide with his fingers or combination of one set of fingers and a special stick. The cylinder-drum accompanies dances, songs, religious and secular ceremonies, and its tunes have been known to gave special signals for good news as well as bad news. OJA - “Flute” The Oja (Flute) is a piece of wood designed with a hole inside, the top has a wide opening to fit the shape of the human lower lip, a small hole on the bottom and two smaller holes closer to the top on exact opposite side. The artist blows the musical sounds through the wide opening, while placing the thumb and the ring fingers simultaneously on the two smallest holes to control the rhythm. The bottom hole which is left alone at all times controls the musical rhythm out flow. It accompanies dances and songs, or played as solo. UDU - “Pottery-drum” The Udu (Pottery-drum) is a sphere shape made of clay, with a hole inside and a small round open mouth. The main function of Udu is to produce musical bass. The artist accomplishes this by taping the open mouth with a round and flat object. The Udu is also used as a safe, and is the first storage container used by the Igbos to store water, palm oil, or to preserve produce. Due to its fragile nature, other solid containers like plastics had replaced it as a storage facility. It continues to serve as the best source for musical bass.

Detoxifying naturally A

BY Victoria Onehi
fter several weeks of eating different things during festivities, it will be nice to cleanse your system of toxins. Health experts say our bodies are naturally built to detoxify us as we eliminate and neutralise toxins through our colon, liver, kidneys, lungs and skin. A proper cleansing or good habits for naturally detoxifying the body can really help to achieve amazing health benefits. Drink water to stay hydrated. Drinking water naturally helps the metabolic process in the body; hence adequate water intake also helps keep the balance of body salts normal. Always, drink as much water as you can. One way to tell if your water intake is adequate is to check the colour of your urine. Light yellow is the goal. If it is darker than that, drink a glass of water or two. Eat enough fiber. Fiber is very helpful if you must cleanse your body of toxins. Fiber is mainly found in fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are almost all water, so 5-7 servings can boost your natural water intake. Also, eat fiber-rich foods like whole grains. Whole grains are full of nutrients and antioxidants. Whole grains are incredibly high in insoluble fiber, keeping you regular, which is especially important while detoxifying. Try fasting for a day or two: Fasting is a popular way of cleansing the body by limiting your body’s intake of food, while simultaneously flushing out your system with
high volumes of liquid. The idea is that your body can start afresh - cleansed and renewed after toxins have been eliminated. Drink herbal teas: Drinking herbal teas is a great way to increase your fluid intake, while also reaping the benefits of the many naturally cleansing herbs and roots provided by nature. Walk/exercise till you sweat. Skin is the body’s largest organ, and sweating helps you eliminate excess body salts and other metabolites of body processes. Sweating every day is a good way to support your body’s healthy elimination of metabolic breakdown products. Food that can help you detoxify Cucumber, which is said to contain 95 per cent water, easily helps to flush out toxins. Lemons, along with other citrus fruits like grapefruit and lime, are widely accepted as one of the best natural body cleansers available. This is why lemons are often a vital component in many juice cleanse and body flush recipes. The citric acid in lemons has the ability to dissolve built-up toxins in the body, allowing them to be flushed out through urination. Try squeezing some lemon juice into a glass of water and drinking first thing in the morning, or simply eat a grapefruit for breakfast. Walnuts are rich in Omega 3 oils. This assists in detoxification.
Red pepper: when it comes to cleansing, Vitamin C is the key. One red pepper contains about three times more Vitamin C than an orange. Garlic, on the other hand, stimulates the liver to encourage the production of detoxification enzymes. Garlic has many significant health benefits, perhaps the most important of which is its ability to boost liver function by aiding in the production of enzymes which help the liver to clear toxins from the body. It also contains two substances known as allicin and selenium, which have also been found beneficial in cleansing. Turmeric stimulates liver function, hence it helps detoxification. Lemonade cleanser Try the lemonade cleanser. The lemonade cleanser is one of the most popular and well-known cleansers. The lemonade cleanser involves making a drink out of water, lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper, which you will consume exclusively for a period of between three and 10 days. The lemonade cleanser is intended to help you flush toxins from your system, while also effectively aiding weight loss. • To make one glass of the lemonade, mix four tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice, half a teaspoon of cayenne pepper and half a teaspoon of organic maple syrup into a glass of water. To make enough to last you an entire day, make four to five times of this quantity.
