The hassle of driving a car filled with hyperactive children, struggling to find a parking spot, to be welcomed by market-like noise from a park filled with fun seekers can be discouraging. All that shouldn’t put your inner picnicker off from planning the perfect picnic. Here’s how you can turn your plain backyard into a perfect picnic spot where you can relax with your family and friends and enjoy the warm weather. First things first; before all else, you need to fumigate the entire backyard so that you can relax safely in the knowledge that you have gotten rid of rodents that will invite themselves over to join your picnic. After that you can move to gettingg your lawn to look lush if you have natural or artificial grass. This step is what you need to have your hands totally on because the plants you want there need to be tendered. Also, you need plants

that don’t invite insects and still make your garden look beautiful like sansevieria; also known as mother-in-law’s tongue/snake plant, or plants like cissus, which is also called grape ivy or kangaroo vine. These plants are all kids and pets-friendly and also keep insects at bay. Creating a perfect ambience is another key in achieving the perfect chill out picnic spot. Be it Arabian themed or the classic wooden chair ensemble, you want to use materials that will withstand the kids, pets and most especially time. Introdu Introduction Hajiya Mariya Adamu Nyako is the Registrar of the Adamawa State Polytechnic (SPY), Yola. The soft spoken, easy-going and com compassionate lady has held many positions in Adamawa St State and was recently turbaned Zinariyar Mayo Belwa. S has received more than 20 awards among which are a She ccertificate of recognition from the West African Institute of G Gender Studies (WIGS), London, awards from the Students’ U Union Government (SUG) of the Modibbo Adama U University of Technology (MAUTECH), Yola, as the “Mother oof the Year” and “Legislative Icon of the Year”, among others. In this interview, she shares with Tambari her story. Educational and career background I was born on June 27, 1964, in Mayo Belwa Local Government Area of Adamawa State. I attended Elementary Primary School, Mayo Belwa, from 1970 to 1976, and later proceeded to Queen Elizabeth Secondary School, Ilorin, from 1976 to 1981. I got a BSc in Home Economics from the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, in 1989, a Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Education from the University of Jos in 1995 and a Masters in Education Management (M.Ed) from Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola (MAUTECH) in 2007. I started my career as a teacher with the Adamawa State Post Primary Schools Management Board (PPSMB) in 1990 and later became the Vice Principal of Government Day Secondary School, Army Barracks, Yola, in 1996. From there I became the Director, Family Support Programme (FSP), from 1998 to 1999. In the same year I was appointed principal and I stayed in that position up to 2006. In 2008, I was appointed the Executive Secretary, Scholarship Board, and in 2008, Executive Director, Scholarship Trust Fund, then Deputy Permanent Sec-retary, Trust Fund. Aside my career, I have just been given the traditional title of “Zinariyar Mayo Belwa”, meaning “Gold of Mayo Belwa”. Growing up In those days, life was very easy. We started with h Qur’anic education and we enjoyed travelling at nightt due to its safety. There was nothing like kidnapping orr armed robbery then. Life was flowing like a peacefull river. Challenges One of the major challenges I have faced in life iss o the type of work I do. The positions I have held so d far, up to the stage of registrar, have been tedious and demanding to the extent that I hardly spare time forr myself. I usually go to work as early as 8am and closee by 6pm every day. I have limited time for my family.

I TOLD MY TEACHER I WOULD LIKE TO BECOME A TEACHER. SINCE THEN MY CLASSMATES HAVE BEEN CALLING ME “VILLAGE HEADMISTRESS Life lessons I have learnt to be simple and honest when dealing with people, and to be very prayerful. Aspirations growing up I had always as-

pired to be a teacher. When I was in JSS 2, a teacher came to our class and asked what we would like to become in future and I told her I would like to become a teacher. Since then my classmates have been calling me “Village Headmistress”. Till date they still call me that. Childhood memories As kids, we so much enjoyed going to the river and playing with water. I am the type that loves bathing with cold water. There was a day I got ice blocks put them in bucket and bathed with the chilled water. When my parents learnt about it, I was beaten I’ll never forget that day. My typical day I am always occupied; doing one thing or the other. Its either I am attending to my staff or doing some office work. I spend the day working or surfing the net. I am the busy type. Most cherished gift It was my first car from my husband; it was a Darkson Cherry. He asked me to close my eyes and when we went outside the house he unfolded my eyes and boom! It was a car! I was overwhelmed by the gift because I could never have asked for more and never expected it. How I met my husband We started dating during my secondary school days. He proposed. It was a yes! And we got married; simple! Most cherished attribute of his He is very simple, honest, straight forward and stands his ground on truth and honesty. Joys of motherhood My motherhood experience is a dream come true and I cannot quantify or describe the joy I felt when I had my first baby. TAMBARI SUNDAY, APRIL 22, 2018

Make your own bath bomb by RAHMA L. ADAMU

B

ath bombs are chunks of wonderfully scented moulded balls that slowly fizz. The fizz takes about five minutes when thrown into your warm bath and the chemical reaction between bicarbonate of soda and citric is what makes your bath bomb fizz and move across the tub. They have had quite the journey, from just a creamy bath bomb to becoming a showcase of art right in our tubs. A bath bomb is an agreeable global agent for de-stressing after a vigorous day, or just a need for some much needed personal time. Therefore, thinking of a perfect gift? Bath bombs are. However, they can be very costly, but fret not, because here’s how to make the perfect bath bomb for your selfindulgence or gift for a loved one. INGREDIENTS * ½ baking soda * ¼ epsom salt * ¼ corn starch * ¼ citric acid * 1-2 teaspoons of water * 3-4 teaspoons of coconut oil and * 2 teaspoons of oil of choice for scent (essential) * Dried flower petals and food coloring (optional)

Pregnancy, ulcer and vomiting

essential oil and food colouring and dried flower (optional). Stir until ingredients are thoroughly combined. Add your water slowly and add only as much as needed because the mixture will fizz upon exposure to water. Don’t forget to stir vigorously to reduce fizzing while adding water. Stop adding water when

your mixture is wet enough to stick together, then press mixture into moulds. Leave it in the moulds for 10 minutes, then carefully remove bath bombs from the moulds. Put bath bombs out to dry for a day. Bath bombs will get less effective as time goes on. The fresher they are, the faster they’ll fizz, so make little batches as needed. You can get all the ingredients you need at any of the stores that stock soapmaking supplies. With additional information from the internet

DID YOU KNOW... THAT BATH BOMBS CAN SERVE AS A GREAT ALTERNATIVE TO SHOWER GELS?

What you need to know about photo sensitive epilepsy By HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU

E

pilepsy is a concept many people are not familiar with as it is not the most common of alignment. However, to sum things up, a seizure triggered by light and visual patterns is known as photosensitive epilepsy. Although it is more commonly associated with kids and young adults, females are more prone to have photo sensitive epilepsy. Many don’t know that it is actually an ail-

ment until it reaches its peak when the seizures begin. The most common symptoms include dizziness, nausea and headaches. According to Dr. Nathaniel Adewale of the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, Abuja elaborated on the most common triggers which include, but are not limited to, bright screens from TV, desktop and laptop monitors, phone screens, flickering lights and

intense lights from torch lights and such. Also, patterns such as stripes with bold colours are also triggers. If you feel such symptoms and notice a frequency in seizures, there are a few things to keep in mind to keep it at bay such as reducing the time you spend staring at screens, invest in a pair of photochronic glasses, change the bulbs and switches in your home to dimmer ones like lumen bulbs that can easily be adjusted, reduce the brightness of your phone and TV so that you’re not straining yourself too much However, the best thing to do is to consult a neurologist or psychiatrist who can do a series of investigations like EEG, CT scans of your brain to determine the activity and advise on the appropriate steps to take. Such people should avoid exposure to light and sudden flashes of it as well. This cannot be overly emphasized. With additional information from the internet

My wife has had five children, two miscarriages and is now two months pregnant and experiencing serious vomiting. Any time she’s pregnant, it is hell. She vomits more than 10 times a day. She nearly died at a time. She has now been diagnosed with ulcer. – Musa. She is suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum. The ulcer is due to not eating well. From all indications, she has to be on admission. Based on what she is passing through, it is advisable for her to do family planning after this delivery. She has five children alive, the sixth is on the way, what else does she want? To continuously risk her life? Please allow her start family planning, if possible, permanent contraception or at least a long acting contraceptive method. She has to be alive to take care of the children. Remember that she is now a grandmultiparous woman. She is at further risk of postpartum haemorrhage.

CS and now pregnant I had a Caesarian Section (CS) for my last baby. I am now pregnant. The scan I did at 36 weeks put the baby at 3.2kg. Can I deliver normally? – Esther, Abuja. When foetal weight is estimated it can be less or more by 0.5kg. Also, for our environment, for a foetal weight of 3.5kg or less, she can be allowed to have a trial of Vaginal Birth after Caesarean Section (VBAC). Foetal weight of above 3.5kg is counselled for possible elective CS because of the risk of uterine rupture. It is also worth noting that towards the end of pregnancy, foetus gains about 0.2kg/week. You have to repeat the foetal weight estimation at between 38 and 40 weeks if you have not delivered, because by 40 weeks the baby might have gained between 0.6 to 0.8kg, and that will put the baby’s weight between 3.8 and 4.0kg. At this foetal weight, elective CS may be a better option.

Body weakness and hearing difficulty I am a 33 years old with a hearing problem for over seven years. I also experience weakness on my left hand and leg and one of my eyes is smaller than the other, and I lose memory easily. – Mr. H. You have to be seen for proper assessment to know if all these symptoms are linked. Is there any history of fever preceding the onset seven years ago, any form of injury or accident involving the head, are you on any long time medication, any history of substance abuse? Concerning the hearing problem, the good news is that there are hearing aids to alleviate the problem. With the loss of memory or amnesia, see a neurologist.

Excessive sweating I am 35 years old and I sweat consistently on my head. Sometimes, even when the weather is cool; especially if I fast, and this makes me drink a lot of water. – Bagudu Excessive sweating is otherwise called hyperhidrosis. Sometimes it’s genetic. But there are other things that could result in hyperhidrosis, like hyperthyroidism, diabetes and obesity. See a physician.
