n 25 years, Evelyn Onyilo built a career in broadcast journalism. She travelled wide, both home and abroad, reporting gender issues. In 2008 she retired voluntarily from the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA). But she is not done with journalism. Presently, she publishes a magazine, Phenomenal People and still hopes to return to her first love: radio broadcasting. She spoke with Tambari.

TAMBARI 11TH JANUARY, 2015 My beginning I started media work some 25 years ago, right out of secondary school. I got all my degrees while working. I started off in the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), where I worked for two years before moving to the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA). I was born and raised in Maiduguri. I spent part of my years in Kaduna.

My father was a police officer; hence we moved from one place to another. We are truly nationalistic. In the barracks you will see different people, so no tribalism or ethnicity or religious sentiments.

Having worked in television in 2008 I decided to leave on my own. I had spent 22 years and wanted to own my publication and be my own boss. I started the Phenomenal People magazine where we try to celebrate people with the hope to bring about good leadership.

Interesting part of being a journalist Should I come back to this world I would be a journalist. There is this satisfaction you get when you are able to meet that downtrodden person. The NTA gave me the opportunity to do social service reporting. I was with the children, orphans, vulnerable people and women. And I saw these people in their lowly state and brought them to light. By that I was bringing their issues to the front burner for the government or people to take action.

I will not be modest to say that you get this gratification of mingling with the high and the mighty in the society. You get opportunities of interviewing the president, vice president of a country in the course of your work.

One of those moments was when I interviewed the late Princess Diana when she came to Maiduguri with her husband then, Prince Charles. I also interviewed the vice president of Zimbabwe, Joice Mujuru, a great woman who fought for liberation in Zimbabwe.

I also enjoyed the many travels, both home and abroad. I had always wanted to be a broadcaster. I think you can have a dream and pursue it.

I cannot really leave broadcasting. In fact, I am thinking of going back to radio broadcasting.

Radio broadcasting is my first love each time I speak; I love radio. So don’t be surprised if you hear me on the radio saying, this is the news read by Evelyn Onyilo from so and so FM. Broadcasting is my passion. You have to be passionate, if not you can’t do it. You will be frustrated because you will be looking for money; and the money is not there in broadcasting.

My best moments are when I see my reports on air. And it goes on every day, every week and every month. So every day, you get the satisfaction for the job well done. Sometimes it can be bad when you are home and they want to play your report and the audio refuses to come on. But thank God, those occasions were few.

Broadcasting is not about glamour People go into the television for the glamour, but it is much more than that. It’s about social responsibility and doing your job. If you go on air

COVER INTER VIE W with all the glamour and beauty and speak bad English, nobody will remember how beautiful you are. So it’s not about the glamour. There is much work going on air because your viewers are your number one critic. You have gone into their homes, so you better behave yourself while on the screen.

You must get your diction and appearance right and speak good English. You have to match the physical appearance with professionalism.

In the way we are trained in the NTA, you have to be a reporter, presenter and performer. This means that you are not just a presenter, you have to be involved in the news writing, processing of the news, either as a reporter or the editor before you are an on-air-personality. It’s a mixture of

can play and a woman can also play. A man can be president and a woman can be a president.

God gave us special roles like procreating, and because we are special, they should create special scenarios around us to make us contribute to the society.

Fulfillment as a mother I find joy in seeing my child every morning, hale and hearty. She brings smile to my face and I see her grow from strength to strength, doing well in school, which is the joy of every mother.

About juggling motherhood and work, you just have to know how to juggle. That is what makes a woman a very strong personality. There were times we were going on assignments together. If

My other passions I have been involved in gender politics for as much as I know it. It came side by side with my job as gender reporter in the NTA. I got all the gender trainings I could - from the United States government, UNICEF, UN and other agencies.

I got all the capacity building on gender, women and children rights activists. Women all over the world are not getting the fair deal of life.

What a woman can do as a human being, a man should be able to do. There is a social role a man

My daughter says she wants to be a doctor. I don’t have anything against that. It’s her choice if she wants to go ahead with it.

High moments When I won the presidency of the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), it was not easy. We contested against two sisters and I won. I was very happy I won.

Aging gracefully I must return all the glory to God for some things he gave me. God renews my youth like the eagle. When you are close to God, definitely your youth will be renewed. This heart of ours carries so many things, and when we allow it to weigh us down, it shows on the face. But when you have God you are at peace. Once you are at peace with your maker, people, yourself, neighbours, it will show on you. However, I walk to keep fit.

Style Style is that extra-mile you go to make yourself unique. My cloths must be well designed with gemstones and other stones. My designers have been helping me achieve that. I wear more of traditional outfit because of my orientation in the NTA. Also, I like good jewellery; not necessarily expensive, but unique ones.

Unwinding I work hard and play hard too. I am a member of the Rotary Club of Maitama, and we are fun-loving people.

While we help humanity in our little way, we

have fun. We come together and have outings. I still belong to the NTA Committee of Friends. We hang out together. We have family outings as well.

When you are in journalism great things happen to you every day.

My role models My late elder sister, Esther Onyilo, who was a lecturer in the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), was one. She died in 1995.

She was very pretty, highly educated and well organised. I took that organisation trait from her.

Round the world, I have lots and lots of them - from the likes of Margret Thatcher, whom I admired as the prime minister, to the likes of Condoleezza Rice. They are strong women. I always say if they can do it, why can’t I do it? Back home in the media industry, I admire someone like Aunty Jennifer Ejembi. She was in the NTA and retired as director. I got inspiration from them.

However, I will like to meet Barack Obama. He has inspired us a lot - that we can do what we set our hearts to do. For a black person to occupy the White House, it was not easy for him. And of course I will like to meet Michelle, his wife.

Philosophy in life What you have to do, you have to do. And what you have to do, you have to do well. Anything you put your mind to do, don’t joke with it. I am serious about that. I am also very patient. The youths I mentor now are very impatient.

I am very patient with people and even in pursing life goals because if you are impatient you might lose it.

Fear God with all your heart. As a human being you don’t know how you came about. So if you do not fear God, like the holy book says, you are a fool. Because a fool says in his heart there is no God, and he has not thought about who created him. Also, be good to people. I believe in that a lot.

Again, in this generation many young people don’t want to work. I don’t know if it is this era of IT super highway. They want to get things even when sitting in their homes. They don’t want to go out and labour and do something. I was barely 20 years old when I started working as a continuity announcer in the then Radio Nigeria, Maiduguri. It was hard work and I was young. My father was a senior police officer and I had all I needed. I did not have to pay rent. Yet, I went on and I said I must get a degree while working; and I did. The young generation should not just sit down and expect things to be thrown at their laps, or complain that dad has not done this or mum has not done that.

Nobody owes you your life; you have to be accountable for yourself. Your destiny is in your own hands, so you must go out there and work it out.

Success is your ability to achieve all you want to achieve - your life’s goals. And while achieving them you are able to help others. You don’t do it just for yourself; if not, the world will be a big boring place.

You should have the ability to achieve life’s goals and impact on the society.

I try to show good leadership where I am. I am the immediate past president of Rotary Club, Maitama; and I did my bit.

Legacy That I came, walked with my head held high and impacted my world. That I was a player and not a watcher, a champion for women and children’s cause and a good leader. Also, that I led by example and did to others what I would want others to do to me.

CAN ONE BE HIV RESISTANT? Doctor, is it possible for a woman to be HIV positive for six years and her husband negative?

James from Yola It is not impossible. Very few individuals have been found to be resistant to HIV. No matter their contact, these few individuals will not be infected. Those few individual are said to carry mutation called Delta32. This mutation helps prevent the protein that HIV attaches to get to the surface. One per cent of northern Europeans are said to carry this gene.

So it is not out of ordinary in the situation you described above.

PERSISTENT ONE-SIDED HEADACHE For the past three years, I have been suffering from persistent headache, especially during the cold weather. I sleep enough, at least 10 to 11 hours a day. I try to sleep wrapped up and warm, but the headache comes back as soon as I wake up. And I am not stressed up that much. It’s mostly onesided (the right side). Please I’d like to know what you think before I see a doctor. Thanks.

How old are you? What is your blood pressure reading? Since it is a one- sided headache, then migraine is the most likely cause. I will suggest you go to the nearest teaching hospital or appropriate medical facility close to you to see a physician. You may be asked to do investigations, including CT scan of the brain. Try and comply, please do not assume.

HOW DO I BUILD UP MY BLOOD LEVEL FOR OPERATION? I have fibroids and booked for operation since June last year. The operation has been postponed twice due to low PCV. The last was 25 per cent, and the doctor said he could not do the operation with that level of PCV except there is blood transfusion first. But I don’t want to be transfused. I have tried to take blood tonic and eat well, but because of excessive bleeding during menstruation, it has been difficult. Please what do I do?

Jane, Kaduna What you are having is most likely symptomatic uterine fibroids. The excessive bleeding called menorrhagia has led to anaemia or shortage of blood. The menorrhagia from uterine fibroids is due to sub-mucous fibroids. It is not the size of the fibroids that matters but the location.

Most likely you might have been given some tablets to control the bleeding. Most of the common tablets and hormonal drugs used to control bleeding from excessive and irregular menstruation do not work well in this circumstance.

The best way is to use a medication that will make your menses to cease for about three to four months, which will enable the anemia to be corrected for surgery. Gonadotropin releasing hormone analogue can be given monthly for three to maximum of six months. After this, the operation must be done; if not there will be rebound growth.

One of the limitations of this is the cost of the drugs; otherwise it is a very effective way of managing anaemia secondary to symptomatic uterine fibroids. Unnecessary blood transfusion, with its associated risk, has been avoided.

BY Ibrahim Musa Giginyu bbah Ali, known in the Hausa movie industry as Ataka, is one of the youngest makeup artistes making waves. In this interview he spoke on how he became a makeup artiste.

A

Tell us more about Abbah Ali I was born and raised at Kofar Wambai, Kano State. I had my primary and secondary education in Kano before venturing into the movie industry.

While growing up, I was very much engrossed in watching movies, especially Hausa home videos. At a very tender age I began to fancy the idea of becoming an actor. But I never knew what it took to become an actor. However, I was optimistic that I wanted to become one.

I was inspired by one of the leading actors in the Hausa movie industry. I am talking about Ali Nuhu. I wanted to make name in the industry like him. However, I was made to understand that not everybody could be an actor because there are other vital aspects of movie-making that make the movie what it is.

You said you wanted to be an actor when you joined the movie industry. How

come you are now a makeup artiste?

As I mentioned earlier, not everybody can be an actor; there are other vital aspects of movie-making. When it became apparent that I was going to be in the movie industry I was determined to be an actor, but along the line I figured out that becoming an actor was not as easy as it seemed to be. Therefore, I got myself attached to a well known makeup artiste in the Hausa movie industry, Habibu Yaro, who introduced me to the rudiments of makeup.

Today, I am glad that my name has been associated with most of the big movie names like Marainiya, Suwaga Acuci Maza, Teburin Mai Shayi, ‘Yadaga Allah, ‘Yar Jami’a, Matar Jami’a, Mafiya, as well as Karfen Nasara, which is yet to hit the market; among many others.

Did you face any form of resistance, either from your parents or friends, when you decided to join the industry?

Actually, at the initial stage, I wanted to join the industry for the fun of being part of it. But I later realised that the Hausa movie industry is an avenue where one can make a lawful earning and live within the ambit of the law. I got into the industry with that notion in my mind.

What is your ambition in the movie industry?

Hajiya Aishatu Abdulkadri, who hails from Kano State, is an artist of repute. After her secondary education at Dada Girls’ Secondary School, she gained admission into the Kano State Polytechnic, where she read Arts and Design. She also obtained a postgraduate diploma in Education, which earned her a teaching job in Fine Arts.

To further contribute her quota to the development of the society, she started teaching people the skill of painting. Hajiya Abdulkadri also set up a vocational training class for paints on fabrics instead of the normal sewing embroidery.

W

hat inspired you into becoming an artist?

Right from my childhood days I have always loved painting and working

with colours.

How long have you been into this business?

I have been doing this for about 20 years now; and I am still doing it, insha Allah.

What are the various fabrics you paint on?

I do art painting on cotton materials: Galilla, Shiffon. I even paint on T-shirts, making them customized and different from what is in the market. I thank God for everything because, in the whole of Kano city, I am one of the few people who work on fabrics. I also have a training school for undergraduates, graduates and even housewives.

Where do you get your painting ideas from?

Most times I just sit down and figure out an idea of design that will go well with the fabric I am about to work on. Sometimes I get my ideas from the nature surround me, events, mood and even animals.

All these things are surrounded by colours. Also, sometimes I go through foreign magazines, as well as looking through the internet and adding it up with the ideas I have on ground.

How do you gather your raw materials?

I gather raw materials everywhere, including markets in cities like Lagos, Kano, Kaduna and wherever I lay my hands on materials I could use for my art work.

Sometimes if I have to order abroad, I also do that.

How many apprentices have you trained?

I have trained more than 40 people who are today the chief executives of their businesses. I also have students who are yet to stand on their own. Before I accept an apprentice in my school, the person will have to get a form and pay a little fee before commencing lessons that will last for about three months.

What have you achieved in this business?

Alhamdullillah! I have made name for myself through this business. I am also doing well, having stayed in it for more than 20 years. I have nothing to lose.

How much did you start with?

I started with about N5,000 which I used in buying materials for my art work. Today, I can’t count how many N5,000s I have made in this business.

Advice to other entrepreneurs Whatever business you find yourself doing, do it well. Just add a little profit to it and you will see the outcome.

Bride price in Bura, Borno State

T

he paying of bride price in Bura culture in Borno State is very colourful and entertaining. It is a period when the bride cannot hide her joy because she is being married. It is also a period when she becomes a woman and takes decisions for herself.

Before the groom and his family will come to pay the bride price, the groom and his friends will pay a visit to the bride’s family to declare his intentions. When he comes to the house of the girl, he and his friends will sit on the floor to show some respect to the girl’s parents. They will be entertained with foods, drinks and water.

Afterwards the father of the bride will ask their reason for coming. One of the groom’s friends will speak up and tell the father their purpose of visiting. They are then asked to go and return after the family of the bride must have discussed.

According to Sarah Mwada, who hails from Biu in Borno State, paying of the bride price starts with the bride’s family, relatives, friends and well wishers who engage in one activity or another, including cooking for guests.

Once the groom’s family arrives, they will be welcome by the elders and bride’s friends. The items brought by the groom’s family will be taken in by the male members of the groom’s family. He will go further and thank the bride’s family for accepting to give them a wife.

The father of the bride will welcome them and introduce the male members of the family, after which he will give them conditions that must be met before their daughter is given out in marriage. The bride price, which ranges from N20,000 N50,000 or N100,000, is quoted.

Consequently, the groom’s representative will agree on a certain amount of money they can pay, which could be presented afterwards.

Other items that would be presented alongside the bride price are bags of salt, cartons of sweet, chewing gum and wraps of kolanuts. They will also provide wrappers for the bride’s mother and grandmother, especially if they are alive. A white piece of cloth is also brought to the father, in which he may be buried when he dies. The younger siblings to the bride will also be given some money.

When the bride price is paid, the groom’s family members will request for the presentation of the bride. At this juncture, the girl will be ushered in by some women who will applaud her through the use of tongue drum, also known as guda in Hausa. Once she kneels in front of her father and says yes, there will be merriment and dancing. At this point, foods are served until people disperse. And preparations for the main wedding will start.

Grapes help lower heart disease

id you know that fresh grapes contain nearly 80 per cent water by weight? This makes them one of the best lowcalorie fruits.

Some medical studies have established the fact that eating grapes has several health benefits.

The folate found in grapes is important during the pregnancy period.

Also, important vitamins such as A, B1, B2, B6 and C6 are found in grapes.

Similarly, Mrs. Sarah Abagai, Head the Dietetics Department, National Hospital, Abuja said, “Grapes are rich in pectin, bioflavoniods and phytochemicals. These include quercetin that helps regulate blood levels of cholesterol, resveratrol (contained in the skins), which is linked to a reduction in heart diseases as well as a lowered risk of cancer or stroke.”

She added that grapes contain ellagic acid, which helps protect the lungs against environmental toxins.

he cold and windy harmatan is growing stronger, and the haze is becoming unbearable to the skin. The flakes and crack on the skin can be very discomforting and really irritating at times. But the good news is that there is a remedy to this embarrassing/frustrating breaks and cracks on the skin.

Moisturise your skin often with a good body cream that will keep your body warm, heal and stop the skin from cracking. Some people have the bad habit of only moisturising the leg, the arm and the neck, forgetting that the rest of the body is also covered with skin, and as such, need moisturising. Moisturise the body from head to toe to achieve the best result.

As cold as the weather is, take a bath twice a day; at least it will keep the body fresh and well moist, as after each bath the body will be well moisturised. Ladies should apply foundation to the face before applying makeup as it will help give the skin a bounce to life. Do not apply white powder in harmatan, it will make your face appear rough and dry. Have with you the harmatan best friends - the body moisturiser, the lip balm and hair cream; they are very important.
