Things you should know before hanging wallpapers by RAHMA L. ADAMU

W

allpapers cover imperfections on the wall, add unique textures and patterns and create a finished wall surface that is difficult to duplicate with paint. But you can make things easier before hanging your wallpapers. Before other things, make sure all your rolls of wallpaper are the same colour and shade. You can do this by testing them in daylight. You need to consider whether you want to put up lining paper first as it is good for hiding walls that are in a dodgy condition. Vinyl is great for areas with a lot of moisture, such as kitchens and bathrooms. For places that stay dry, such as bedrooms and hallways, it is best to use non-woven papers and fabrics. Order two to four more rolls of paper for waste and overages because mistakes might happen, whether you are a professional or not. Choose an appropriate pattern for the room. Patterned wallpapers can add a unique theme to any room. If you want to buy a wallpaper with a distinctive pattern, make sure you take care to match up the pattern and avoid clashing. You can also make the room seem larger by using patterned wallpapers. Use horizontal patterns to make the room seem wider. Use vertical patterns to make the ceiling seem higher. Leveling is just as critical as any step when hanging your paper. Always make sure your first sheet is perfectly level. If things aren’t flush when you get to a corner, get out the measuring tape. When installing your paper, air will most likely get trapped in between; but it is okay, don’t panic. This is typical, and it should go away as the wallpaper settles and the adhesive dries. If it doesn’t, just puncture the bubble with a small pin and gently flatten out the paper with the wallpaper sweep. Wallpapers are not only perfect for homes, they are good for other types of apartment.

Breaking out of my shell to improve the lives of women

Interview by AMINA ABDULLAHI, YOLA

Jamila Babuba, a lawyer, has worked for 18 years in the Adamawa State House of Assembly. She is a frontrunner in the struggle for the passage of the Adamawa Equal Opportunities Bill, sponsored by the state Ministry of Women Affairs, Social Development and Integrity, in conjunction with the United Nations. Due to her courage, commitment and dedication to work, she was given three traditional titles – Gimbiyar Njoboliyo, Jaruma Jimeta and Tauraruwa Chika Soro Adamawa. She has declared interest to represent Yola-North/South and Girei in the House of Representatives. In this interview, she shared her story. Family background come from a family of five. My dad is Malam Wesley Babuba, a retired journalist. He worked in the Adamawa Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), Yola. My mum is Hajiya Asma’u Salimu, a former clerk to the Adamawa State House of Assembly. I am an indigene of Yola-South but was born and brought up in Jimeta. I have worked in the Legal Department of the Adamawa State House of Assembly for 18 years. Although I was a science student, as God would have it, I have a degree in Public Law (LLB) from the University of Maiduguri, after which I went to the Nigerian Law School, Bwari, Abuja. I was called to the Bar in 2009. I served in the National Assembly, precisely, the Committee on Justice, House of Representatives. I founded JABU Foundation because I have compassion for helping people. I am presently contesting for a seat in the House of Representatives. Career background I am not a practising lawyer; however, I represent the Adamawa State House of Assembly in civil suits. I do some legal al drafting and offer advice generally. I also represent my department in women activities of the UN-Women. n. Challenges faced in life I have not really faced challenges, but coming out of my shell was a big deal. Life lessons My life lesson n will be, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” Most rewarding ding part of your career I can say that at being called to the Bar is the most rewardingg part of my career. I think it was huge. As a lawyer you understand a lot. I have always said id that if you really want to know much about bout life, you have to study Law firstt before going for some other discipline. cipline. Also, the fact that I havee a Foundation has given me a lot of courage to aspire to represent my constituency in n the National Assembly. Growing up I was the favourite; avourite; the table was always ys turned to my side. I so much loved my privacy, though ough I had friends. As an introvert, interacting as a child was difficult. But it is not like that anymore. I now interact with lots of people. Aspirations as a child I have always aspired to be a beauty queen and a model. I used to be very slim when I was a child. My mum m told me that when en she gave birth to me, my dad said she had given birth to a baturiya. uriya. While

Five ways to help calm stressed skin by RAHMA L. ADAMU

W

e have all felt it - that week when everything isn’t just falling into place as it should, when you can’t even pull your own weight; it’s like a negative force. If you experience stress over a prolonged period of time, your brain sends a signal to the nervous system to go into a ‘fight or flight’ mode. Then we release hormones and chemicals into the bloodstream. It has a direct effect on the way the skin functions, which fast-tracks aging. We get acne often, our skin gets easily irritated and we start to appear dull. appe There are

few guaranteed ways to erase the signs of stress from your skin. Indulge yourself over the weekend with these easy at-home tricks and your skin will look refreshed and radiant by Monday morning. As a bonus, you will feel more relaxed too. Use a gentle facial cleanser: Do not aggressively cleanse your skin with harsh skincare products; instead, reach for a gentle cleansing option like micellar water, which is powered by tiny oil molecules that lift dirt, oil and makeup up away from the skin. Use a mois moisturizer for sens sensitive skin: If you have stre st re stressed your sen sensitive skin, it’s time to get a moisturizer m for both day an and night. Yo You can also st store some aaloe vera in tthe fridge

for a cool treatment for your skin. It does to your skin what water does to your body on a sunny day. Feed your skin: Technically, omega fatty acids and rich foods like salmon, or nuts like almonds and fruits like avocados, can help deliver essential nutrients and restore your skin. Don’t forget to have your eight glasses of water. Drink green tea: It is said that a cup of green tea a day keeps the blotchiness at bay. Green tea’s antiinflammatory properties can be soothing. The epigallocatechingallate (EGCG) in green tea may help prevent the collagen destruction that leads to wrinkles. Consider subbing tea for your morning mug of coffee. Kill the stress: Identify what is causing you stress. When you slip into a period of extreme stress, try as much as you can to eliminate it. Talk to a friend, watch a movie and find your Zen.

DID YOU KNOW... THAT STRESSED SKIN CAN LEAD TO BREAK OUTS?

H E A LT H Y L I V I N G By HAFSAH A. MATAZU or most of us, relaxation means lying down in bed or sleeping after a long and stressful day. But little do we know that this only helps relieve physical exhaustion and not mental. Your mind needs a way to help fight anxiety and stress associated with your day to day activities, and the only way to do that is by ensuring you engage yourself in the right relaxation techniques suited for you. According to Dr. Aisha Adama of Nisa Hospital, Abuja, engaging in relaxation regularly will help in regulating your heart rate and breathing, stabilising your blood pressure, relaxing

F

Relaxation techniques to help relieve anxiety your muscles and ensuring adequate blood flow to your brain. But since our bodies function differently, some relaxation techniques may work for you and others might not. By the time you figure out what works best for you, you will notice positive changes in yourself that will improve your life overall. Deep breathing: This is a basic and yet simple method of relaxation with instant effects. It is a quick way to

keep your anxiety and stress levels in order. You can also combine this with some calm music in the background to further enhance the relaxation exercise. Meditate: Meditation is a process of engaging your mind in calm and positive thoughts while shutting yourself out from the outside world. It is also very effective and allows you to expel any thought that may be stressing you out or causing the anxiety you may be feeling at that moment in time.

Exercise: Not only are you doing your body a huge favour by exercising, you are also de-cluttering your mind at the same time. Running, swimming, jogging and even dancing can do the trick. Whatever exercises your comfortable with, stick to it and make it a routine. You won’t regret it. Yoga: Join a yoga class and try your best to attend at least three times a week. Practising this calming exercise will help stabilise your mind, body and soul. It is one of the secrets to an anxiety-free life. Go to the spa: Everyone deserves some ‘me time’ and the spa gives you the perfect opportunity for just that. Pick out a spa date every weekend and enjoy a relaxing massage to help relieve the tension your body and mind may be feeling. Even a nice hammam bath or a facial can do wonders. Use the day to spoil and pamper yourself. Your body deserves it. With additional information from the internet

OVARIAN SURGERY AND UTERUS

HELP! I have ovarian cyst that hurts so much. I was told it may damage the womb if care is not taken during surgery and I want to have a baby. Sakina Surgery for ovarian cyst has nothing to do with the womb otherwise known as uterus. They are two separate organs. Only occasionally when there are a lot of adhesions could there be minimal interference. Now since the ovarian cyst is giving you so much pain, it’s probably a complication probably due to torsion. In this case, immediate operation is advisable. If action is not taken early it can become dangerous and lead to the removal of the whole ovary during operation. Kindly see a Gynaecologist as soon as possible.

LOST THE FIRST PREGNANCY AND NOW DIFFICULT TO CONCEIVE

I am 27 years old and I live in Adamawa. I got married in March 2015 and I got pregnant but I suffered during the pregnancy. It took me 10 months before I delivered through caesarean section (CS) because the baby died in my womb. Since then I have not conceived again. Please doctor help me. I have done many scans and the result is the same - everything is ok the only problem is this Adnexa POD. There is poor interface between the uterine wall and adnexa with moderate fluid collection in the POD. Maimuna, Adamawa You need complete fertility work up since you have waited for almost two years or more for another pregnancy. Let me also emphasize that couples should realize that normal pregnancy is forty weeks or nine months one week. Allowing pregnancy to stay for ten months is not healthy especially for the baby. Allowing the baby to stay in the womb for about forty two weeks or more is like leaving a well ripe mango on the tree without plucking and should be avoided. You and your husband should see a Gynaecologist for examination, investigations and treatment. When you becomes pregnant please ensure you registers for antenatal and abide by the obstetrician’s counsel.

IS THIS NORMAL?

We have been married for four years now and my wife had a miscarriage three and half years ago. Now she is about six weeks pregnant. She complains of weakness, tiredness, vomiting and sleepiness. Please are all these normal? What do we need to do to prevent miscarriage again? Salifu, Jalingo I will say congratulations first. All the symptoms you described are normal symptoms of early pregnancy. You did not state how many weeks the pregnancy was before the miscarriage so it’s difficult to guess the cause. What I will advise you to do is to take your wife to see an obstetrician for proper assessment and counseling.

DIABETES MELLITUS IN PREGNANCY

I am seven weeks pregnant now but my blood sugar today was 10.9mmol. I’m currently on Glucophage and one other drug. Please what do I do? I had miscarriage early last year at four months. Habibatu, Kaduna You have diabetes mellitus in pregnancy. At this sugar level you have to be admitted and the oral hypoglycemic drug you are taking should be stopped and converted to insulin injection. You have to be maintained on insulin throughout the pregnancy. Proper glucose control is important to avoid compliance like polyhydramnios, macrosomia and sometimes intra uterine fetal death. You must also see a dietitian for counseling on diabetic diet. Concerning the miscarriage at four months, you have to be assessed for cervical incompetence and if necessary, steps taken by doing cervical cerclage
