AMINA AMINU DORAYI //

Dr. Amina Aminu Dorayi was born in Zaria, Niger State. She attended Zaria Children School, from where she went to the famous St. Luis Secondary School in Kano State, after which she proceeded to the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, where she read Medicine and Surgery. Born into the family of Professor Aminu Dorayi, Amina also holds a master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Liverpool, UK. She also did other certificate courses in many institutes, including the Harvard School of Public Health. An indigene of Kano State, she is the Associate Deputy National Programme Manager of the Department for International Development (DFID)funded project called Partnership for Transforming Health System, Part 2. She is a proud mother of three lovely children. She spoke with Tambari on the journey of her life so far.

Best part of my career The best part of my career is that I am now a Public Health practitioner, learning and travelling round Nigeria to visit as many hospitals as possible. In Public Health we are more into preventive care than treatment itself. So I am not in one place. For instance, I am not in one hospital attending to patients. I go out to communities and different hospitals to

COVER INTERVIEW

I AM THE FIRST MEDICAL DOCTOR IN MY OWN FAMILY. MY HUSBAND IS A DOCTOR, HIS FATHER IS A DOCTOR AND HIS MOTHER IS A NURSE. WE ARE A FAMILY OF HEALTH PROFESSIONALS. see what is happening. What I am doing now is basically around health system strengthening. When we say health system strengthening we mean looking at health beyond the clinic. It also involves looking at what finance is to go into health care from the federal budget allocation to states and local governments. If you have a system that is well funded you will be able to have a good health system.

Challenges There are serious challenges. As a woman, wife and mother of three children, travelling around means that you will definitely leave your own family for others to take care of. However, I am happy that my last child, who is six years old, understands that I am not always around. There was an interesting thing that happened, which is part of the challenges. One of my sons was asked to write things he observed about one of his parents. He wrote about me, saying, “My mother is always travelling, she is always on phone, she always participates in every activity in our school, she likes doing so many things.’’ It dawned on me that he also feels that his mother is always travelling. Any time I spend two weeks at home I am a happy woman because I know that I don’t normally spend up to two weeks without travelling.

Childhood dreams Honestly, I didn’t have that kind of dream. When I was in secondary school I just knew that I liked Biology, Mathematics and some other subjects. I did not want to go into Engineering because I felt I wouldn’t do well there; hence I came up with the idea of becoming a medical doctor. Interestingly, I am the first medical doctor in my own family. My husband is also a doctor, his father is a doctor and his mother is a nurse. So that is a family of health professionals. I am really happy that I read Medicine. The reason is because as a medical doctor I have many options. That explains why I ventured into Public Health. I know all the basics of Medicine and Surgery; and going out gives me the opportunity to give more to the society. To be honest, I will encourage as many women as possible to venture into the health profession. This is because it is very fulfilling. And any man who wants his spouse to participate in helping the society will be happy to see her as a health practitioner.

Fondest memories I have a lot of fond memories. We are eight in my family, and I am the firstborn. We grew up in a community in Zaria where the streets were not well developed, but we were always on bicycle. TAMBARI JUNE 7, 2015

COVER INTERVIEW

// AMINA AMINU DO DORAYI

TAMBARI

Motherhood experience I have one girl and two boys. When I gave birth to my first daughter, it was one of the happiest days in my life. Knowing that the baby depends on you for everything is quite an experience worth having. I think the experience has humbled me. It is a wonderful experience to be a mother. It is also a wonderful experience to combine discipline to make the child a better person and the show of love.

Meeting my husband This is the 13th year we have been married, and I think I am a very lucky person. I met him in the university and we were in the same class. He is thoughtful and caring person. I met him in 1994 and we later got married. I am very happy that we got married. He is my friend and will continue to be my friend.

Role models I have a lot of role models in and out of Nigeria. Outside Nigeria, one of them is Margret Thatcher. She inculcated a lot in me. She showed that, as a woman, with hard work you have the intellect and integrity to get to wherever you want. Another role model I have is Hajiya Amina Ibrahim, former SA on MDGs. I really respect that woman because she knows what she is doing. I like her modesty and intelligence. Oby Ezekwesili is another role model I have. I have never seen a strong woman like Oby. She is so strong that when she believes in something she goes for it, no matter what. I like that in a woman. I also like Abike Dabiri Erewa. The women I call role models are those who have made a lot of mark in the society.

Definition of fashion style I love to be comfortable in what I wear. I also like simplicity. If you have a style that defines you in comfort and simplicity, keep to it. I love good cloths and gold jewellery. I like looking good. One of my best memories as a child is the safety net and the environment, which enabled us to always stay out in the fresh air. I always rode my bicycle around our area. All my friends also had bicycles. But we don’t see that these days, maybe because of modernisation. We also have big roads, so you don’t see children going around because of safety. It was not so; the environment was safe. We had a communal living. I miss such times when everybody was your friend. You could go to everybody’s house and eat lunch or dinner, but just make sure you were back home in time. So the memory of having a lot of my friends around is something worth recalling.

What I learnt from my mother 06

TAMBARI JUNE 7, 2015

TAMBARI JULY 2015

I have never seen a woman that is as neat as my mother. In fact, she set a high standard for cleanliness for me. I think she impacted that quality of character in all of us. And it is one of the most important things in life. Again, taking care of eight children is not a joke, but she did it and she is still standing. That makes me give her a lot of respect. Now, I have only three children and I have cold feet because I don’t think I can even come near to what she did. Most of the time, when I travel I leave the children for her and I am well assured that they will eat well and sleep well. She has a natural care. That is why they say woman are naturally nurtured. My mother is that kind of person. My husband knows that she is the only one who can take care of the children when I am not there. In fact, she will even do better than me.

Favourite holiday spots I will say Dubai because the UAE has it all. Everything you need is there, just like the Disney Land. I like Disney Land as well, but I cherish a holiday spot that gives you a difference, especially with water.

Legacies I want to be known for my hard work. I want to be known for having a huge impact in the lives of people, especially women and girls. I go out to give lectures from primary to secondary schools. I like to build young people and women. I want to be known for my passion towards improving the life of everybody. I talk to young people very freely, and I think that as the future of this country, they should be groomed to be the next generation we can be proud of.

THE AMAZING KAJURU CASTLE by PUPWAYA TIMOTHY DIBAL

W

ho would have ever thought that an amazing monument could be found in Nigeria and Kaduna State to be precise? Well, one of such monuments is the Kajuru Castle. It is located in Southern Kachia, Kajuru Local Government Area, which is about 45 kilometers from Kaduna. Built by a German businessman, Burg Heinrichswalde in 1978, this wonderful fortress, which is a European castle in Africa, is located on a mountainous ridge. Indeed, a first timer may assume that he or she is imagining things,

but it is real. It was learnt that the mountainous scenery at Kajuru village actually attracted Heinrichswalde and gave him the inspiration to build the castle. The breathtaking view of the mountains surrounding the castle is picturesque, and that, on its own, is a fascinating. The design of this architectural masterpiece, which is a tourist wonder of sorts, is very European and clearly German, with a baronial hall, complete with suits of armour. In the castle, there are bedrooms looking like dungeons and several towers

with square walls. There are also the crocodiles in a pit protecting the huge gates. The castle is also adorned with a magnificent stainless steel swimming pool and well equipped kitchens. Beautified with flowers, the castle provides good accommodation for visitors and others. A private property, Kajuru Castle is worth visiting as it is definitely a memorable edifice. So, when next you want to take a vacation, Kajuru castle might just be the place for you. T Additional information from www.abujafacts.ng TAMBARI JUNE 7, 2015

GETTING THE PERFECT EYEBROW by MULIKATU MUKAILA

Discovering the best shape for your eyebrow without sacrificing its natural appearance is what you want to accomplish when shaping it. Pencil- thin or overly bushy eyebrows can distract rather than enhance your beauty. The shape of the eyebrow affects the appearance of the eyes. In many ways, the overall appearance of the eye area is defined by the arch, length and thickness of the eyebrow. To shape the brow, tweezing is probably the best option for accuracy and to prevent

mistakes. Never shave; this can lead to a patchy, overly thin or wildly uneven brow, which ends up being unattractive.

TWEEZING AND TRIMMING TO SHAPE A PERFECT BROW Before you start tweezing, use a lip or brow pencil to heavily draw on the shape you want. You can adjust it with a makeup remover as you decide on the shape you want to create.

Once the shape is drawn on, tweeze any hairs that fall outside the line of the brow. Next, brush the brows straight up with an old toothbrush Hairs that are too long and floppy should be trimmed with small scissors. Tweezing long brow hairs rather than trimming them can result in gaps in the eyebrow or create a patchy appearance.

Greens and leafy vegetables such as spinach, Broccoli, lettuce, Salmon, tuna, and any oily fish are good examples. Also, Eggs, nuts, beans, and other non-meat protein sources like milk and soya beans are essential. Oranges and other citrus fruits are also good for the eyes.

WEAR SUNGLASSES USE SAFETY EYEWEAR The right kind of sunglasses will help protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet rays.

If you work with or in hazardous or airborne materials and environment then there is the need to wear safety glasses or protective goggles at all time.

WOMEN’S HEALTH

HOW CAN I GET OVER TRAMADOL ADDICTION? I have been taking Tramadol for the past six years. Now, I want to withdraw from it, but I am having difficulties. I need your advice sir. Thank you

T

ramadol is a weak opiate which has addictive properties. In Nigeria, millions take it routinely for pains without prescription. Millions of unskilled and semi-skilled workers do take it to relieve pains after a hard day’s work. Others who take it consistently are people with chronic back pains. It is unfortunate that quite a large number who dispense the drug over the counter do not know it is addictive. The first step in the right direction is the step you have taken, that is the decision to stop. If you have a strong will, then it is possible. You need to avoid the source of the drug, that is where you buy it. Also, in case you keep a company that encourages taking unprescribed medications, you have to keep a distance.

There is the option of placebo, which is something to replace tram adobo without having similar chemical composition or effects. The need to see a psychiatrist and psychologist cannot be overemphasized. Those who are on addictive drugs and want to stop should also remember that there are rehabilitation homes scattered over the country. Let us use this opportunity to appeal to our youths to shun peer pressure and desire “to belong,” which is the genesis of drug addiction. Also, the problem of over-thecounter purchase from unlicensed sellers who do not know the side effects should be discouraged and avoided.

“LET US USE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO APPEAL TO OUR YOUTHS TO SHUN PEER PRESSURE AND DESIRE “TO BELONG,” WHICH IS THE GENESIS OF DRUG ADDICTION.”

PREGNANCY AFTER FIVE MONTH OF C/S I want to know how to calculate late ovulation and if it is safe for a woman to take in barely five months after a Caesarean section. Hillary, Maiduguri It is too early at five months. Why not wait for a year? But in case she is already pregnant, there is no problem. If she is already pregnant, then let her book with a secondary or tertiary health centre under a consultant obstetrician care. The delivery has to be by Caesarean section because of the short interval. Concerning late ovulation, do you know women with longer periods? Women with longer menstrual cycles (more than 28 days) have longer ovulation time of more than 14. For example, a woman with constant menstrual length of 30 days is likely to ovulate on day 16. This is calculated by subtracting 14 from the menstrual cycle length.

FAMILY PLANNING THREE MONTHS AFTER DELIVERY Can we go for family planning with my wife three months after delivery? Right now, she is yet to experience her menstruation. Yes, she can go for it now; no problem. Contraception can be done immediately after delivery, miscarriage or abortion.

SESAME SEEDS

A GOOD SOURCE OF NUTRIENTS

by MULIKATU MUKAILA

F

or their nutritive, preventive and curative properties, sesame seeds have been widely used in culinary, as well as traditional medicine.

Sesame is an important source of nutrients such as anti-oxidants, vitamins and other dietary fiber with potential health-promoting properties. It

can also be really good for the skin; hence it is often found in many skincare products. Its oil is one of the first oil seeds known to mankind.

WHY YOU NEED TO START ENJOYING SESAME SEEDS WITH YOUR FOOD 1. GOOD FOR YOUR SKIN AND HAIR The sesame seed can help prolong beauty through its oil. It also carries many properties that are important to other parts of our body, including, our hair, skin and eyes.

2. PACKED WITH HEALTH BOOSTING MINERALS

3. GOOD SOURCE OF PROTEIN AND FIBRE

Sesame seed is rich in essential minerals like copper, magnesium and calcium. It is important that our body gets a regular dose of these minerals as they have a lot of health benefits. Copper is good for people suffering from arthritis while magnesium is good for people with respiratory problems.

They may be tiny in stature, but sesame seeds are big when it comes to providing our body with protein and fiber. This protein will help in the maintenance and development of muscles while the fiber helps support a healthy digestive system.

According to Mrs. Sarah Abagai, a nutritionist at the National Hospital, Abuja, “Sesame seeds have poly saturated fats, which belong to the range of fats that have the omega fatty acid, which is good for health generally. She added that the best

KANNYWOOD ARTISTES SHINE AT RITE TIME AWARD NIGHT

K

annywood, the Hausa movie industry, has indeed come of age as different agencies, corporate bodies and other relevant outfits continue to recognise and adopt it as a viable institution worth making financial commitments on. Many have associated their names with the fast growing industry.

He said the awardees emerged after a series of screening by a team of experts invited by the company. It was through the above process, which was adjudged transparent and fair, that the winners emerged.

It is on this note that the Rite Time Entertainment Company, under the leadership of Alhaji Sani Katsina invested much resources to organise an event aimed at promoting the movie industry and honouring some notable artistes from different categories such as directors, editors, among others.

“Initially, we screened 10 artistes, out of which we screened again to arrive at five. We continued to screen till we got to three, and out of these three, one emerged as the winner. These processes were applicable to all the categories so far awarded this night. To all of us here, everybody deserves to be celebrated; therefore, whether you have won something or not, as long as you are part of this industry you are celebrated today,” said Katsina.

The event, held at Royal Tropicana Hotel, Kano, was aimed at encouraging movie practitioners in the region, as well as celebrating the achievements of the industry so far. In his welcome address, Katsina disclosed that his company decided to organise the event to boost practitioners’ morale and explore avenues of injecting modification into the industry, which is seen as one of the largest job providers in the country.

Similarly, the special guest of honour at the event, Alhaji Muttaka Rabe, described the Hausa movie industry as one of the best things that have happened to the entertainment scene in Nigeria. According to him, the fact that the industry has taken away thousands of youths off the street is enough achievement to celebrate. He added that the movie industry has indeed done greatly in terms of empowering youths and wealth creation among the people of the region.

“WAS AIMED AT ENCOURAGING MOVIE PRACTITIONERS IN THE REGION, AS WELL AS CELEBRATING THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE INDUSTRY SO FAR.” Apart from the awards, some notable dignitaries in the country were also honoured. Among the dignitaries honoured are former Kano State governor and senator-elect, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, Katsina State governor, Ibrahim Shehu Shema and director-general, Kano State Censorship Board, Alhaji Ahmed Beli. Among other winners, Actor Zaharaddeen Sani won the Best Actor award while Ali Nuhu won that of the Most Popular Artiste. Similarly, Falalu A. Dorayi won the Best Director award.T
