ZUBAIDA UMAR //

Success comes with hardwork Interview by AMINA ALHASSAN & JAMILA DAUDA FREDA

Zubaida Umar, born on the 21st of May, is the first daughter of ten children and hails from Kebbi State. Her father, Colonel Abubakar Umar, is a retired army officer, while her mother, Amina nee Yahaya Gusau, is a retired Matron. She is happily married to Kashim Tumsah. She started her educational journey with Labayi International School, and Essence International for her primary and secondary education, then attended the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria where she studied Business Administration, and subsequently acquired a Masters degree in International Trade from Robert Gordon University. She is currently undergoing a degree program in Psychology in the University of Liverpool. Career My first job was as a volunteer with the Humanitarian Development Fund of Nigeria, a charity organization, jointly owned by various women in Kaduna State whose objective was to assist the less privileged in the Society; this was while I was still in the University, during a 2 year strike. Working with less privileged children, gave me an insight and changed my outlook on life, and I would say it is still my best experience. For my NYSC, I served at the Debt Management Office (DMO), as one of the pioneer staff of the Institution, where I was retained as a permanent staff after service. I worked at DMO for 6 years before moving to the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), where I have been for the last 11 years. I am currently a Deputy General Manager, and Head of the Corporate

I HAVE LEARNT OVER THE YEARS THAT YOU NEED TO LIVE LIFE TO EXPRESS NOT IMPRESS AND THAT DISAPPOINTMENT COMES WITH EXPECTATIONS

Communications Group of the Bank. Over the course of my career in FMBN I have worked in various capacities such as the Head of Human Resource, Zonal Coordinator and Head of Policy & Strategy Department, to mention a few. Growing up Growing up was really interesting for me. You see I come from a very large family, and spent a huge part of my life with my Grandparents. My grandfather, Yahaya Gusau was a family man, who believed in spending a lot of time with his kids and grandkids. He was our lesson teacher and a great mathematician too. His daughter, my mother, was a very hard working and strong woman and I believe I got my vigor from her. I

generally come from a close knit family as I am very close to my father, sisters and brothers. I had a wonderful childhood. Life’s lessons I have learnt over the years that you need to live life to express not impress and that disappointment comes with expectations, when you don’t expect anything from anyone, you can never be disappointed. These are lessons I have learnt. Most rewarding part of my career Being where I am today and I am striving even harder to go

CO V E R

higher and reach the top. Success comes with a lot of hard work and whenever I look back and see where I am today, I am always happy at what i have achieved so far. Fond childhood memories I miss The one I miss most is the drive around town with my granddad, just the two of us. He used to invite me out for grocery shopping almost every evening. But then a simple trip would turn out to be hours of driving round town to show me historical sites that had mostly been urbanized over the years. I truly miss our conversations I the car. What My typical day is like My typical day is waking up at 5am to pray, wake up the kids by 6am to get ready for school, and once they leave I come back to get ready for work. My schedule is extremely hectic as I go to work by 9am and I do not leave till 7pm most days. I come back home and carry out my normal routine of checking up on the kids and feeding everyone. On the average I get about 5hours of sleep every day, the life of a working class mother you would say. My aspirations growing up Growing up I always wanted to be a teacher, however my first choice was to study Psychology and eventually practice. I love studying people, identifying different personalities and why people behave in certain ways. I al also love helping people, I thrive on assisting people. Somehow I found myself on a different ccareer path which has played out w well too. But I decided that I will st still get a degree in Psychology, ju just to understand people better. Joys of motherhood My joys as a mother is coming b back from work after a long st stressful day, opening the door an and just seeing my kids running to welcome me. Again one thing I ffind a lot of joy and love is that ev every child is different and has his ow own attributes, like you can tell th the friendly from the unfriendly, et etc. My most cherished gift A pair of ear rings that I got fr from my mother. They were th the same ear rings used on me d during my naming ceremony an and I wore them till I started sc school. My mum gave them to m me when I had my first daughter; In never knew she kept them until sh she brought them out that day. Till date we still have them and I intend to keep them for my granddaughter Insha Allah. My husband and I I met my husband at a restaurant. I had gone out for dinner with my cousin, he walked in and they got talking, he was her boss at work. That was how it started and here we are, many years down the line. Most cherished attribute of his My husband is a wonderful gentlemanand when I say wonderful, I actually mean wonderful. My most cherished

He is always there for me, giving advice and guidance, coupled with a lot of patience. He mentors me and I always learn a lot from him. Gift from my husband I cherish very much The gift of love. Fashion accessories I always have on Wrist watch, Ear rings and Shoes. My best travel destination My best destination would be Maldives, but I like Gambia a lot. For places like Maldives and Gambia, you are not thinking of shopping, it’s just for total relaxation. The serenity is just awesome in these places. The last book I have read ‘Thinking Fast and Slow’ by Daniel Kahneman. It’s a book that everybody needs to read. It’s a slow read but a masterpiece that explains human rationality and irrationality. I read a lot; I read every night even if it’s two pages I am able to squeeze in. I read everything, all genres, even Hausa books. Favourite food and drink I love Tuwo with Miyan Zogale; I love grilled Salmon too. For drink, I would go with Ribena. Top five on my wish list 1. To move closer to God. 2. To be able to serve people by taking advantage of all potential I have to do good and make a positive difference in the Society. In one way or the other I have been able to do a little but I really wish and want to do more before I leave this world.

Advice to younger ladies Women are taking over. Hard work! Hard work!! Hard work!!! I can’t emphasize this enough. You need to identify what you are good at and follow your path; at times you feel like giving up but you have to remain focused. Best car, sport, weather and colour I am not a sporty person but if I am to pick, I’ll say Polo, because my father was a great player and I was raised in a family that loves horses. Next would be Football because of my husband, who is addicted to watching football. I like Chelsea and Arsenal. My favourite weather is the rainy season. I am not obsessed with cars; anything goes for me, so long as it takes me from point A to B. My best colour is brown because it isn’t loud, I don’t like loud colours. My Favourite day of the week Everyday aside from Monday. Everyday of the week brings a new challenge, but the thing is that by Sunday everyone is relaxed and then pop Monday is here.

Beauty routine I wash and moisturize Daily but visit the spa mostly when I travel. Role models My late grandfather Alhaji Yahaya Gusau, he taught me about honesty, calmness and integrity. My father, who always has a solution to every problem, he is very intelligent and has an idea about almost every situation or topic. My mother, who nurtured me into who I have become today; with her guidance, wisdom and love. Finally my late aunt, who was also a mother to me, Hajiya Fatima Ibrahim (Aunt Baba); for being the most genuine, patient and caring woman that ever lived. How I relax I love me time, I like to be by myself, though I hardly get that these days. I like quite areas where I can read a good book or listen to music. Favourite kind of music I am glad you asked because I love music a lot. I listen to everything; I don’t have a particular genre. I listen to Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo music, etc... I listen to Fela and mind you, I listen to each word and beat; before I tell you I love a song, trust me I have already listened and totally understand what the song is about. I keep telling people that there is no situation in life that has not been sung about, everything we are looking for is in a song. My favourite quote or saying Never say never What I wouldn’t be caught wearing Mini skirt My favourite TV program I am addicted to Crime Investigation Channel. I like anything that has to do with forensics. Looking back what I would tell a younger me I would relax a bit more and never let go of all the huge dreams I had.

must-have items for kids this rainy season

By JAMILA FREDA DAUDA

W

ith every season comes new fashion trends. The rains are here and you are no doubt thinking about your little ones. Dressing your kids is all about combining fun with being practical, to kick off the season. Below are some must-have items you should make available for your little ones this season. A lightweight jacket As the weather gets warmer and the days get longer, it’s finally time to hang up those heavy winter coats. So it calls for lightweight outerwear that is not only easy to move around in, but also adds a bit of colour to the playground. Cool shades Protecting your little ones from the sun is an absolute must and what better way than with a cool pair of shades? Sunglasses are a warmweatheressential, and the right pair will get your kids through both spring and summer in style. We love the Ray-Ban Junior collection, which is full of fun colours. Springtime shoes As soon as the sun is out, all kids want to do is run, jump, climb and play. Whilst it’s not quite the time for sandals, your little ones will no doubt be pleased to do away with

the winter boots. Sneakers are the ideal in-between shoes – sturdy and practical, yet lightweight and fun. With so many different designs out there, it’s easy to find a pair that lets your children express themselves; this season, we love polka dots and high-tops. A good umbrella There is no denying that the weather can be unpredictable this time of year, so make sure your kids are prepared. Springtime showers needn’t put a dampener on your little one’s style, all they need is a funky umbrella. Compact umbrellas fit easily into their rucksack or school bag, and come in all sorts of fun colours and patterns. From Disney to Spiderman to Peppa Pig, your kids can get really creative in their choice and they’ll be more than happy to take it with them wherever they go. A stylish hat Along with April showers, spring may still have a bit of a chill in the air in which case, you’ll want to keep your little ones warm, let them look stylish but their ears and head will still be covered. This season, rainbow zig-zag is the pattern of choice; however, softer pastel colours also work well and never go out of fashion.

H E A LT H Y L I V I N G Helpful, simple home remedies to fight hepatitis Stories by JAMILA DAUDA FREDA

Y

ou’ve probably heard warnings about hepatitis, a category of viral infections that can cause serious liver damage and even lead to death. Hepatitis literally means inflammation of the liver. There are five main types of this infection which are; A, B, C, D and E. The most common forms of hepatitis are hepatitis A, hepatitis B and hepatitis C. This highly transmissible virus does not discriminate against sexuality, age or race. According to Dr. Ankama, a consultant with Nasara Hospital Kaduna, home treatment can help relieve symptoms and prevent the spread of the hepatitis virus. But then there are few things you also need to do. Slowing down • Reduce your activity to match your energy. You don’t have to stay in bed, but listen to your body. Slow down when you are tired. • If you are feeling tired at work or school, try to reduce your workload. • Avoid strenuous exercise. • As you start to feel better, slowly go back to your regular activities. If you try to go back to your regular pace too soon, you may get sick again. Eat right • Even though food may not appeal to you, it is important to eat well. For most people, nausea and loss of appetite become worse as the day goes on. Try eating a substantial (but not heavy) meal in the morning and lighter meals later in the day. • Doctors used to recommend a high-calorie, protein-rich diet to people who have hepatitis. This is no longer believed to help. And such foods can be hard to eat when you feel nauseated. Try to have a balanced diet while eating foods that appeal to you. Avoid dehydration It is important to keep your body well-hydrated when you have hepatitis B, especially if you have been vomiting. • Drink plenty of water.

• If you can tolerate them, fruit juices and broth are other good choices, because they provide extra calories. • Many of the “sports drinks” available in grocery stores can help replace essential minerals (electrolytes) that are lost during vomiting. You can also make your own rehydration drink. Avoid alcohol and drugs Hepatitis makes it hard for your liver to process drugs and alcohol. If you take drugs (prescription or illegal) or drink alcohol when you have hepatitis, their effects may be more powerful and may last longer. • If you are taking prescription medicines, your doctor may tell you to stop using them until your liver has had time to heal. Don’t stop taking the medicines unless your doctor has told you to do so. • Avoid alcohol until your doctor feels that your liver is completely healed. This may take as long as 3 to 4 months. Try to control itching People who have hepatitis sometimes have itchy skin. You can control itching by keeping cool and out of the sun, wearing cotton clothing, or using over-thecounter antihistamines such as Benadryl or ChlorTrimeton. Talk to your doctor before taking these medicines. With additional information from the internet

Food to help boost collagen E ver wonder why certain people look half their age, with great skin? Well, it’s simply because they have an abundance of collagen. Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies. It’s found in muscles, bones, skin, blood vessels, digestive system and tendons. It’s what helps give our skin strength and elasticity, along with replacing dead skin cells. When it comes to our joints and tendons, in simplest terms, it’s the “glue” that helps hold the body together. The body’s collagen production naturally begins to slow down as we age and that’s when we see signs of aging, such as wrinkles, sagging skin and joint pains due to weaker or decreased cartilage. Other lifestyle factors like eating a diet high in sugar, smoking and high amounts of sun exposure also contribute to depleting collagen levels. Therefore, it is important to eat food rich in protein to keep the collagen level high such as: Fish Creates stronger cells: Fish like tuna and salmon are loaded with omega-3 fatty acid, Skin cells are surrounded by a fatty membrane that protects them. When the cells are healthy, they are able to support the structure of the skin. Red vegetables Pumps up sun protection: tomatoes, peppers and

beets contain the antioxidant lycopene. “Lycopene acts as a natural sunblock, protecting the skin from damage while increasing collagen levels.” Citrus Fruits Studies show that citrus fruits such as oranges, limes, lemons and grapefruits that are rich in vitamin C have the ability to help amino acids, lysine and proline, convert to collagen. Antioxidant vitamin C is also extremely important in helping to neutralize free radicals, which attack and break down collagen and elastin in the skin. Foods rich in protein In addition to giving your body a dose of healthy protein that it needs, egg whites are high in both lysine and proline, as well as collagen itself, so adding more egg whites into your diet could help support your body’s natural production of collagen. And for those who choose the vegetarian or vegan route and don’t want to incorporate animal products like eggs or lean meats into their diet, try nuts particularly peanuts, which also supply lysine. Orange and vegetables Restore and regenerate: Vegetables that are orange in colour, like carrots and sweet potatoes, are rich in vitamin A, which restores and regenerates damaged collagen. Give your home a gold touch G Byy UCHE EZE

old has been trending for a while, and it has yet to lose its luster. Soft, pretty new finishes like rose gold, burnished gold, and champagne gold ensure that your space will continue to be a cozy environment. Gold fixtures range from lamp holders, to tap heads, head knobs and of course mirrors. The allure of gold is that it contains light. It’s a duo chrome, which means it looks either more pink or more gold depending on how the light hits it. The look created by gold is a dewy, post-coital flush. Gold fixtures and finishes in a room create warmth. The variegated tons of gold fixtures add warmth to the home, and it helps to choose paint colors with an awareness of gold’s undertone, or underlying hue. Fixtures in polished and brushed brass have yellow or greenish undertones.
