CO V E R I N T E R V I E W my m late mother in-law taught me how to go about it. She taught me to be patient, saying a I should never see them as kids, but talk to them even when people think they don’t listen t or o know what they are doing. They actually know what they are doing, and when you talk k to t them, they listen. So I don’t raise my voice at a them and I don’t spank. When they do what is not right, I talk to them. I would give them timeout, and after five minutes I would explain t to t them why I did that. So they are very well behaved. b

I LOVE MY JEWELLERY. RECENTLY, I GOT INTO SHOES AND BAGS BECAUSE OF MY RECENT INVOLVEMENT IN FASHION WHICH I HELP MY SISTER DO AS SHE RUNS A FASHION SHOP. I ALSO LOVE MY BAGS AND SHOES

Mum’s words that stuck My mother taught me that children are our lives. And I have found it to be true. They make li us u happy. You are happy when you look at them because they are the creation that God t gave us. g Best gift from dad The family he gave me. We are very close and a happy. We actually have problems, but when they arise, we sit down and talk. That was w how h my father taught us to always be together. Three must-have fashion accessories I love my jewellery. Recently, I got into shoes and a bags because of my recent involvement in fashion which I help my sister do as she runs f a fashion shop. I also love my bags and shoes. Best travel destination I love Disney World. Now that I have kids, I take them there, and that brings back all sorts t of o exiting memories. Also Orlando, Florida because best family vacation comes from there. c How do you relax? I don’t like to sit in one place; I keep moving. in The only time I relax is when I travel with my m dad for our meetings. He always gives us a week off, during which we just go home, sit down, drink and gist. d

Educational background I attended a university primary school. Anytime we were on holidays we would go to the United States of America (USA) for summer school. My father never left us idle; we were always occupied with academic activities. Back then we didn’t appreciate it, but now we do. When we left the USA, we went to Egypt where I had my secondary school in 1989, at Alexandria Girls’ College. We learnt Arabic there. My dad wanted us to learn how to read and write the Koran. My life in Egypt was one of my greatest school years ever. The school, which was boarding, gave us proper foundation on how to go into the world. After that I had my university education in 1995 in Florida. Career I am working for my dad and still have my businesses on the side. He is really a good boss. We travel a lot for meetings, which makes it hectic, but when things are calm I have time to do my own things; that is why I have invested in fashion. Challenges As a woman, it is really hard. People tend not to take you seriously, but luckily, times have changed. So we go out there and prove ourselves, and we are happy with that. Presently, a lot of women are coming out. Influence of dad’s name I try not to use that name to always find my way. This is because I want to build a name for myself. I am proud to be an Indimi. My dad worked hard for his name, so I want to also work hard for my name as much as he did for his. Growing up We were sheltered and didn’t have many friends. We lived in Maiduguri and our compound accommodated everybody. My dad made it a heaven for us that we didn’t have to go outside. It was just family, it was

beautiful. ourr get get- together and dinner par parbea tif l We had o ties. We were all very close. Life Lessons Life has thought me a lot but the one lesson I keep to my heart is be sincere and honest. People tend to forget our creator and try to please others while in reality it is we who should please our creator. We will return to him, it is just a matter of time Childhood aspirations My dad always encouraged us to follow our hearts. When we were in school they asked us what we wanted to be, and I said I wanted to be a nurse. At that time I was very young and didn’t know I could be a doctor. After a while, my dad told me to try and be the best, saying I could be a doctor. He said I could be anything. So I decided to do pre-meds, but it didn’t work out. Over the years, my interest changed to fashion, which my sister has been doing. Challenges that shaped me I have watched my parents and saw how they comport themselves. They are very respectful, always have time for us and listen to us. My dad has never raised his voice on us. We grew up respecting my father a lot; that we never wanted to disappoint him. When we think of doing something wrong, what immediately comes to mind is if my father would be happy about it. We didn’t lack anything; so why would we want to disappoint him? Childhood memories Our trips to Disney World were fun. It is a place for children. When I was young I was a daddy’s girl, but when I grew up and got married, I became a mummy’s girl. Motherhood Experience When I had my first child, I had no experience, so

Best food I like my Kanuri food. Growing up, my dad loved that and I didn’t just get it. We used to have food competition in our house. My step mum would have a big feast, and we would tell our mum to do more because my step mum was doing more. But she had her secret; she would just make my father’s favourite dish. Immediately he opened the food flask and inhaled the aroma of the food, he would eat that and nothing else. We just didn’t get it. When we grew older, we started enjoying it. I love the meal so much that I can eat it every day. Favourite day of the week Mostly the week days because people are out there working and I love to work. Beauty routine I use my products, the facial scrub and moisturiser. Favourite perfume My favourite is Donnie Cairey. I started using it when I was in high school and still use it till date. My favourite bag is Loiusvutton, I also love my Maureen’s collections of bags, and she is my cousin. Style definition It is for a woman to feel very comfortable, modest, yet elegant and sexy, not revealing too much. Favourite car I love Mercedes because it is just the way to go. You can’t go wrong with Mercedes or go out of date. It is so easy to drive and have no complications. Best sports I played basketball, but now I just gym. Best weather The rainy season; it’s just a calm time. I can just drink TAMBARI NOVEMBER 22, 2015

Beauty secret I eat right; I am not a junkie, and I visit the gym a lot.

Favourite urite book I read my Koran because I am trying ying to memorise it. I also read ead the translations so I can understand it better. I used to read Jackie Collins, but it becamee too dramatic. The mentality there ere is different from ours. When you read the book, you tend to emulate late their mentality, ty, so I had to stay away from it.t. I have to read what will bring me closer to God and d my religion.

Women’s role in the society I think women need to come out more because we can do any job. If you notice, a lot of people who go abroad to study, and most times the women come out tops. Parents mostly rely on men and they are getting relaxed. The women excel because the men know they always have their father’s backing. We have proven that we can do it. Even the Qu’ran says we should respect women. We carried our babies for nine months. If we can do that, what can’t we do? We can do almost everything. Balancing work and family It wasn’t easy at first, but with time I got my routine. You have time for family, and when you are not with the family you have time for work. And that’s how I balance it. Your dad’s trait in your children Independence. I have taught them to be independent. I used to mind if they could do certain things. They sleep on their own, which is something I didn’t allow them do. But they told me I taught them to be independent, so they can sleep on their own. Advice to women The advice I have for women is: even if it doesn’t seem to be easy, just don’t give in, keep trying because there would come a time when it is easy and you won’t even remember the hard times. It is part of life. There are always ups

rowing up in a serene environment is very interesting and every child’s dream. A lovely family, comprising junior, daddy, mummy and myself, a cute family of four you would everyone admired. Been the first child of the family gives me lot privileges which some other kids yearn for, they always considered me lucky. Everything I needed was at my disposal, been the cynosure of all eyes, the diamond beauty of my time, my beauty radiated like the early evening sun, all these are some of the compliments I receive from people. All thanks to mum as I her exact look alike, she is considered a goddess by many. All the boys in my class want to be friends with me but I barely have time or gave them any bit of my time for any guy. Daddy drove us back from school on a sunny Friday afternoon, he returned to work after dropping us off at home. Ogechi the maid served us lunch, after which I had a shower, since it was Friday I tuned in to a series station but wasn’t lucky as the series they had on was quite boring. I had no choice but to have a nap on the couch. I was standing by the road side waiting for a cab, the weather was getting cloudy and unfriendly, I waited patiently and prayed hard for the rain to wait a bit longer to enable me get a cab. My phone went off due to low battery I would perhaps have called the driver to come pick me up. Luck was fast running out on me. Suddenly a flashy car stopped in front of me, I was scared and moved some steps backward. With window sliding down a guy asked ‘Are you going my way?’ I really wasn’t in the mood for any smooth talker and didn’t hesitate to say a very sharp no. I turned away from the car and started walking away. My parents have always warned me never to talk to strangers especially on the road. This was even a stranger of all strangers as he was a guy. He politely asked again if I was heading his way and before he could mention where his way was and I cut him short and said in a very harsh tone ‘ Never mind, I will do just fine!’ He said Ok and drove away. I stood there for another 30 minutes and wondering what a stupid girl I was for turning down an offer in such a situation, as the weather seemed to have been patient with me enough and was ready to pour. To my surprise the car drove back and again the driver said politely that is should stop being a stubborn girl and hop in the car except I had made up my mind to be drenched in the rain. Immediately I heard that I could not help but blush and shamelessly but shyly hopped into the car, he drove quietly without saying a word to me. I broke the silence and thanked him for the ride. He then asked for my destination which I told him and immediately I saw a smirk on his face. To my surprise he was my new neighbor who just came from England. He was new around the area and have heard girls in my street talk about him being a young rich guy as all want to be his girlfriend. I really didn’t care about but surprisingly I found myself stealing glances at him, as I did that I felt my heart beat faster. There is no denying the fact that he is cute, calm and charming. He has got all the 3Cs. He dropped me off at home and that when I realized that the rain had started and it was really heavy. He didn’t let me go without exchanging us exchanging contacts. Since that night we have become fond of each other and it didn’t take long before we became lovers. I introduced him to my parents who loved him for his character. The girls on my street became envious and felt I didn’t deserve him. But in reality Daniel and I shared a lot in common, he was just the guy I have wished, dreamt and prayed so hard for. On a cozy evening which happened to be the eve of my birthday, he took me to a very private place knelt down and asked me to marry him, I lost my voice and never believed it was going to be a reality to be his wife. Short of words my response was tears of joy rolling down my cheeks. I could not utter a word through-out our drive back home, all I could do was smile at him. I ran out of the car to show my parents the twelve carat diamond ring and they were as well happy for us. Our wedding date was fixed and our honeymoon scheduled for London for a month. On the wedding day, daddy held my hands to where my darling husband to be was standing, the priest emerged and Daniel took his wedding vow and placed my wedding ring on my left hand, it was turn to say ‘ I do’ and suddenly someone tapped me so hard. When I opened my eyes, behold it was Junior who was waking me to say it was time for dinner. I was full of rage and anger because I was not able to complete my wedding vow, then I realized it was just a dream after all‌‌. Editor’s Note; Keep a date with us on our next edition and read more about Marrie’s diary.

olours household and gift limited is a business born out of a passion for colours, household and gifts items and has been existing for seven years. Managing Director Evangelist Chi-Chi Amodi speaks on the business. What in your view are the best gifts for Nigerians? This is a dicey question because we have all kinds of people in Nigeria with diverse culture and background, but one thing I know about Nigerians is that they have taste, so they love the best. This is one reason why in colours, we stock the best and unique things that can’t be gotten anywhere. We don’t go for cheap and un-interesting items, the things you find here are items that would make you happy. Nigerians love good things. What gifts do people buy more during the seasonal periods? During Christmas which is fast approaching, what people like to buy is what describes Christmas, which is all about the birth of Jesus. It is also a time of exchanging gifts with friends, including with those who are not part of the religion. Getting gifts for those kind of people, you wouldn’t get gift about

FINE COOKING

with

LAMB NIHARI This is a meal automatically qualifies you as a great eater. This is a spicy slow cooked curry made with the leg shank of the lamb and the average preparation time for this dish ranges from 8-10 hours with various stages of seasoning and cooking finesse. Wakkis has already done the work for you, all we want to do is to make you feel like a great eater capable of everything great.

INGREDIENTS USED IN LAMB NIHARI GHEE (CLARIFIED BUTTER): This is a staple in many Asian cuisines. It is made from melting butter and the preservation time can last up to a year at room temperature due to its low moisture content and lack of dairy. According to research, those who are lactose intolerant have something that can be added to their must-have list. Incase you are wondering why, during preparation it is stripped of all its problematic protein and milk sugar that normal butter would have making it easier on the digestive system. This is also a natural source of the cancer-fighting fatty acid conjugated linolenic acid (CLA) which not only aids weight loss but also slows the progression of some types of cancers and heart disease. With everything in life, moderation is key! SCALLIONS (SPRING ONIONS): These have a milder taste than regular onions due to the premature harvest of this vegetable. They could be described as small but mighty. With their size they have higher levels of dietary fibre in them in comparism to their other bulb roots, shallots and onions. They also help in reducing cholesterol most especially in the liver because it contains small amounts of thiosulfinates which are converted to allicin through an enzymatic reac-

tion. The best part about this his vegetable is that every part is edible from head to toe. KALONJI SEEDS (NIGELLA SATIVA): The rich black colour of these seeds always make them noticeable in every meal. The best way to describe the taste of these seeds are pungent and bitter but fear not, the benefits of these seeds surpasses the taste consisting of more than 100 components and extraordinary healing properties. It can be processed into oil form and used to prevent hair loss, removal of pimples, cold and cough remedy. In fact, the benefits are endless. We know we love food as much as you do. If you don’t then you need to start loving food as much as we do. We promise to give you the best dining experience if you give us the opportunity. That said, why don’t you give us a try and we promise we won’t leave you disappointed. Infact we promise to leave you with a taste to remember.....we know you want to...! BODY HAIR SKIN

Caring for your

LIPS during harmattan by PRISCA EMADU

W

e are presently having a feel of the harmattan season, which is associated with dryness; hence causing the lip to look dry, cracked and unattractive. The lip is a very delicate part of the body, such that when not properly taken care of, could show signs of vertical lines, dull texture and aging. As we age, our lips become hyper sensitive and prone to dryness. During the harmattan, extra beauty measures are taken to combat the effects of the weather on the lips and other parts of the body. There are various steps to care for the lips. Healthy eating: This may be strange to t many, but the first thing to do is to eat well w balanced, healthy diets. Eat lots of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and nuts. A v healthy lip makes part of a healthy body. Stay hydrated: Drink a lot of water. This will w hydrate the body and skin, maintaining the t moisture level of the lips.

Apply lip balm: A moisturising lipstick or balm can be used to pamper the lip from time to time. There are different types of lip balm, including a cream type for very dry and severe conditions, moisturising gel for daily use, etc. Use lip gloss: This is a beauty product usually applied after using a lipstick. It can be used without colour to give the lip a shine during the harmattan. Exfoliate the lips: Just as the lip is delicate, it needs to be pampered and nourished often so that it can stay smooth and soft. You are required to use a soft cotton cloth, dampen it in water and massage on the lips. This removes the dead cells accumulated over the lips and brings out a soft skin. One point to note is that licking the lips doesn’t help; it rather enhances dryness. It removes any moisturiser used on the lips, as well as all the natural moisture from the lips.
