ASMAU ABDULAZIZ YARI //
CO V E R I N T E R V I E W
Background am Hajiya Asmau Abdulaziz Yari, wife of the Zamfara State Governor. I am from Zamfara State. I was born into the family of late Alhaji Ibrahim Barau, a former ambassador. Owing to my father’s background, I was opportuned to visit a lot of places. I started my early education in China, did my primary school in Geneva, Switzerland, after which I came back home to attend the Federal Government Girls’ College, Gusau, Zamfara State, from 1989- 1993 and later moved back to Stockholm, Sweden. After my father’s death, I came back to Nigeria and wrote my WAEC examinations in Sokoto State and also did my IJMB programme and got admitted into the University of Maiduguri where I studied French language and graduated in 2001 with a B.A combined honours in French and Linguistics. I later did my post-graduate diploma in public administration.
I
Childhood memories I always travelled as a child. I had the opportunity to meet different people, in different countries. That is one of my fondest memories which have helped me a lot, even as an adult. Aspirations Initially, I wanted to become a doctor in my early years but then, I had a change of mind because I didn’t like physics and chemistry subjects. I wanted to work in the United Nations at a point but, then, man proposes and God disposes. Everything changed when I got married in 2001, and I got married to someone who is into politics. At that time, he was the secretary of the APP and, later, he became the chairman of the party in our state. So I was in the forefront of politics in the state and everything changed from there and now he is the governor. Meeting my husband Actually, we are related, so he is not a stranger to me, I have known him almost all my life, so it wasn’t difficult for us to get along before we eventually got married. Most cherished gift from him My children, because I love them and I hold them so dare to my heart. Joys of motherhood Motherhood is another phase of life for every woman. Every mother has a story to tell or write in this aspect because when you hold your baby for the first time, everything becomes different to you, including the way you think, act, or even relate with people. Alhamdullillah (thanks be to God). It is a thing of joy to see your child grow up every day, it is a wonderful feeling and you always have to take each day as a blessing and enjoy the process and don’t rush yourself. Being a wife and mother It is not easy to combine everything, but it is just one of those sacrifices you have to make in life. It is not difficult to cope when you have everything planned. You should be able to have a timetable as a woman so that you won’t one day forget yourself. Of course, as a mother, I sometimes miss my kids because I might be away doing one project or the other. But whenever I am around, I make up for that by giving them my time. Also, when we travel out for holidays, we have that special time to bond.
Role models I don’t want to mention one name but I will say any confident woman that knows what she wants and loves herself because you have to first love yourself before loving anybody. Those are qualities that I see in a woman and say, okay, this is my role model. Hobbies I love travelling, meeting people, so I can acquire new experience. I also love reading and cooking. Joyous moment What gives me joy is reaching out to people, assisting them and putting a smile on their faces. Staying around my family and kids also gives me joy.
Relaxation I relax better when I am out of Zamfara State, especially in Abuja. It is not as hectic as when I am in my state. Favorite holiday destination In Nigeria, I think it’s my home because I love to sit in my living room, in front of the TV with the remote in my hand, watching my favourite programmes. But when I am out of the country, I probably love the U.S.A Lessons learnt in life Sometimes it is the people you hold dare to your heart that deceive and even backstab you. This is one lesson I have learnt. Yet, you don’t allow such things to bring you down, just get up and move on.

CO V E R I N T E R V I E W // ASMAU ABDULAZIZ YARI Mode of dressing I love being fashionable, I am always trying to find out what is trendy and what is up-to-date and what is the latest fashion. But I think fashion should go in a decent and comfortable way, I don’t believe because it is fashion, it shouldn’t be comfortable. Favourite colours I love peach, torques and anything in the family of brown. Beauty routine and keeping fit Actually, let me make a confession, I don’t really do anything to stay fit. I just love to be the way I am, I eat all the
I AM JUST LUCKY TO BE ON THE SLIM SIDE, DESPITE BEING A MOTHER OF FOUR. I REALLY DON’T DO ANY SPECIAL EXERCISE FOR BODY FITNESS. TALKING ABOUT BEAUTY ROUTINE, I JUST APPLY A VERY LIGHT MOISTURISER AND MOVE ON FROM THERE. junks you can think of, I am just lucky to be on the slim side, despite being a mother of four. I really don’t do any special exercise for body fitness. Talking about beauty routine, I just apply a very light moisturiser and move on from there. Favourite designer For perfume, probably it would be Givenchy and, for handbags, I love Burberry and Prada. Contribution to women emancipation in the society I intend to support my husband in a lot of areas such as girl-child education, which is very important to the people of the North. We also have a lot of health related issues in the North such as maternal mortality, VVF, breast cancer etc. I have done a lot of programmes in the past, I have distributed a lot of breast cancer kits to our women in my state, empowered many women so that they can earn a living, so these are the major areas I want to keep touching. Most times when you intend to come up with a project, you have to look at your immediate society. I am dealing with women from the grassroots level. Zamfara State has 14 LGAs and when we

are having functions in the state, we address people here in the local dialect which is Hausa, so I felt if I give my project an English name, it will be difficult for the women to pronounce it, so I came up with the name: Hanun Taimako, in English language, it means: “helping hands.” It is an NGO that deals with vulnerable women, girls and orphans. We touch on education, health, empowerment, poverty alleviation and many more areas. Assisting women is all about providing them with small businesses that they can use to support their family and that is what we intend to do. Legacies I just want to be known as somebody very loving and caring, down-to-earth. I really want to be known for my humanitarian work.
HAUWA MAI YARE //
KANNY WOOD
I AM AIMING FOR NOLLYWOOD – HAUWA MAI YARE by IBRAHIM MUSA GIGINYU
HAUWA MUHAMMED MAI YARE IS A YOUNG ENERGETIC HAUSA ACTRESS CONSIDERED AS ONE OF THE LUCKIEST ACTRESS IN THE MOVIE INDUSTRY. BARELY FEW YEARS OLD IN THE INDUSTRY, MAI YARE HAS FEATURED IN OVER 40 MOVIES. Journey into Kannywood was born in Wudil Local Government Area of Kano State and was taken to live in Ibadan, Oyo State, at the age of two. I grew up there and did my primary and junior secondary school there. I came back to Kano State where I completed my secondary school and later got married. In fact, that was the main reason of my coming back home. The marriage lasted for some years and was I blessed with children. I got divorced and went back to stay with my parents. However, I never knew I possessed any talent regarding the movie industry until when I had a dream. I told my mother about it and she said that I shouldn’t worry because God was in control of everything. After some days, I started composing and singing songs, everybody was surprised. Gradually, people started noticing the acting talent in me, and they kept telling me that I can go to places in acting, especially because I can speak Yoruba language fluently. The first person to try my acting talent was late Rabilu Musa of blessed memories, that was how I became an actress in Kannywood industry.
I
Tell us about the dream That dream changed my whole life completely. It has been years that I had that dream but I have never discussed it with anybody but my mother, the world will get to know about it when the time comes. For now, it remains with me.
Muslim. That has been my guiding principle ever since I joined the industry. Can you tell us some of the movies you have starred in? I have featured in movies like, Gidan Haya, Gidan Mahaukata, Iyalan Magajiya, Waye Mijin, Waye Matar and many others. So far I have featured in more than 40 movies since joining the industry, my ability to display my Yoruba speaking talent has made me a star among my peers.
from my parents. Similarly, big names in the industry have been very kind to me. I have nothing to say to them than my deepest appreciation. Do you intend to get married again? Sure! Why not? It is only that I am not going to get involved in it blindly next time. Does that mean that you are into a serious relationship now? No! I am not into any relationship at the moment. What are your dreams as an actress? I want to be a leading name in the Hausa movie industry. I want to be that star that made peoples’ faces sparkle with joy. I want to be a star with a difference and, after Kannywood, I will aim for the Nollywood. That has always been my dream.
Would you take a role in a Yoruba movie, if approached? Of course, I will. I told you that I was brought up in Yoruba land. In fact, I understand the language more than any other language. People see me these days as a Yoruba, not as a Hausa girl, and that has been one of my added advantage over other artists in the Hausa movie industry. What would you say are the challenges you face as an actress? I always consider myself to be one of the lucky individuals in the movie industry. I have not been in the industry for a very long time, but I have done a lot in the short period I have been with the industry. I thank God for that, and I have always been receiving blessings
Did you face any resistance from your parents when you decided to join the industry? My parents are very understanding and educated people, they believe that they have trained me well and, therefore, they had nothing to fear. When I told them about my intention, they gave me their blessing and asked me to be a good ambassador of the family. Since then, I have not given them any reason to regret their decision. They keep telling me to remember where I came from and what my religious obligations are, as a

DO’S AND DON’TS FOR WEARING WHITE by PRISCA EKOKUJE-EMADU
T
his may come as a shocker to many but there are actually rules to wearing white outfits. Today in our fast evolving style world, one would wonder what rules are there to wearing a neutral colour as white! However, there are rules and if you want to remain that glamourous fashionista, you should adhere to them. •
No matter how purified you may feel as the colour white signifies, please don’t wear an all-white outfit to a wedding. The only one allowed to show up in an all-white outfit is the bride. So in order not to be in competition with the bride or be a show stealer, its advised you don’t wear white. It is fine though if you have a touch of white on your outfit. • There is no actual climate that makes white more suitable for an outfit but it is best advised to wear white mostly during hot weather as that can make you feel cool. • It doesn’t have to be purely white. You can wear off-white, cream and beige clothes instead. • White outfits also choose the style of shoe to complement it, wearing a black boot on a simple white dress can seem odd unlike when you wear a nice blue peep toe shoe.
08
TAMBARI JULY 19, 2015
•
This last pointer most people know but for the sake of those who don’t know, if you live in a bustling place, city and rely mostly on public means of transportation, then, a white outfit is not the best for you because if you consider the hustling, bustling and jumping of one bus or taxi to the other just to get to work, an occasion or event, I can assure you that it would take an extra care or a miracle for you to undergo the stress of transiting while wearing white and don’t get dirty, especially behind the butt.
•
Lastly, when wearing white make sure your inner wear isn’t also white. it is then that its disastrous. Black underwear are advisable when stepping out in an all white outfit.

he symptoms of ovulation could be a pointer to ovulation but it s too subjective. There are more objective ways of knowing whether ovulation occurred or not. These include follicular tracking and hormonal assay especially twenty one day progesterone Concerning “ terrible. Abdominal, pains “ it cannot be normal since it is terrible or severe. Is there any associated discharge per vaginum? Is the pain more during the period , middle of the period or at any time? You may need to see a gynaecologist. Possible causes include pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis and complicated ovarian cyst.
HOW DO I BURN STOMACH FAT Please what can I take to burn stomach fat easily. I got big tummy since after delivery. Anonymous Usually the uterus contract and return to its normal shape in the pelvic cavity within six week of delivery.. If you are within the peuperium that is six weeks after delivery then wait to ensure it is not the uterus. If you are now months after delivery then exercise, and reduce or no excessive food intake. ONLY TWO DAYS FLOW Doctor please tell me how to go about this. My period only come for two days and stopped. It has been like this for three years now. Anonymous Normal menstrual flow is between two to seven days or 30 - 80mls (total). Did you have dilation and currettage otherwise called D&C? Or is there any form of uterine instrumentation prior to onset? Do you use up to two pads that is fairly soaked in a day? If not then it is likely to be Asherman’s syndrome. Other causes of this condition include severe endometritis and operation on the uterus. Part of the tests to be done is hysteroealpingogrqph . Hysteroscopic adhesiolysis with foley’s catheter insertion is the treatment of choice. Also blind adhesiolysis with IUCD or foley’s catheter insertion is another option. There will be need to take hormonal treatment for three months

As presumed, many men are not style conscious. To a large extent, this assertion is true. But even with that, there are some important fashion items that are important in a man’s wardrobe, one of which is the shoe. Your shoe speaks volume even when you think it doesn’t. Here are five shoes every man should have in his shoe rack. • Flip flops: these are meant for casual wears, they are opened toed and flat with a Y-shaped strap that passes the first and second toe. • Pool slider: this is a thick soled and strapped shoe, basically used during raining season but can also be used for a casual outing. • Sandals: this is a light shoe, opened toe and well strapped to the sole, it can be nicely worn with traditional attires.

LASOONI PALAK [SPINACH]
‘’One man’s poison ivy is another man’s spinach – George Ade. This dish is for the vegetable lovers. Those who have taken a conscious vow to a healthier lifestyle. At Wakkis, we think about everyone, the fish lovers, chicken lovers, lamb lovers, beef lovers but this is catered to the vegetarians. If we don’t thank you, your gut would – we promise.
INGREDIENTS USED IN THE LASOONI PALAK WHIPPING CREAM: This brings so much fear at sight, to health conscious individuals, who count their calories per spoon. Before you have a heart attack, there are some benefits of using this in your cooking. It is believed to help suppress your appetite therefore keeping you satiated for longer. Works like a charm in your morning coffee. The whipped version on strawberries is another guilty pleasure. Because it contains saturated fats, using heavy cream is healthier than using vegetable oils with their polyunsaturated fats. PALAK LEAVES: “Even Popeye knew how beneficial spinach was in saving Olivia.” Apart from being an obvious weight loss aid, this has some hidden benefits of being part of anyone’s diet. For the men, it can help improve the production and motility of healthy sperm. The leaves are packed with nutrients like folic acid, iron, zinc and antioxidants. Here’s another secret, the calcium found in this green bundle of greatness not only strengthens your teeth, and it also acts as a natural teeth whitener because it promotes saliva production that neutralizes the harmful acids in your mouth. Because this is rich in fibre, it is used as a home remedy for constipation. If you have a severe case of constipation, you can try drinking spinach juice mixed with water for some relief. ONIONS: They make you cry whenever you attempt to cut them (even wearing goggles

doesn’t seem to help the tears), they are so beneficial to your diet that, it is virtually impossible to make a Nigerian dish without them. Frying them alone in vegetable oil, releases a certain aroma that stimulates your stomach enzymes in anticipation for the delicious dish being prepared. Onions are also a source of the strong antioxidant vitamin C that helps to combat the formation of free radicals known to cause cancers including prostate, colon and stomach cancers. The
vitamin C is also needed for the building and maintenance of collagen, which provides structure to skin and hair (buy more onions instead of weaves ladies). The next time you visit Wakkis, be sure to try this dish. Have it with some basmati rice or with some home – boiled potatoes would leave you satisfied for hours. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it! – Yum!

Pedicure: A mix of hygiene and beauty
by MULIKATU MUKAILA
W
hen it comes to our health and beauty routines, feet and toenails often get neglected. No matter how tight your schedule is it is always important to keep your feet and toenails in tip-top
condition. Learn how to care for your feet and toenails by having good hygiene by pampering them. There is nothing better than a pedicure; your feet feel soft, smooth and toes ready to fit into any shoe. You can always exfoliate your feet by yourself
B O DY C A R E
by soaking it with lukewarm water in order to allow dirt to wash out easily before trimming the nails. Pedicure should always be among your beauty routine because it brings back life to your feet again. Asides the beauty part, it is also hygiene.
4
with MULIKATU MUKAILA
Tips on how to care for the feet: 1. Make sure to wash your feet daily. Feet tend to get dirty and sweat more than other parts of the body, so it’s important to have good sanitary habits. If you take showers in the morning and not at night, at least make feet-washing a part of your night routine. 2. Give your feet a pedicure at least two weeks: regular pedicures really make a difference in keeping your feet soft and free from dry and rough skin, and your toenails clean and neat. You don’t need to spend a lot of cash to have your pedicure professionally done
in a salon, and with a few tools, you can do your own pedicure right in the comfort of your home. 3. Get rid of odors. Dealing with odor is a problem many people face. Feet produce more sweat than the rest of the body and tend to harbor bacteria that create smell. If your foot odor has gotten out of hand, there are measures you can take to make them smell better right away. 4. Trim your toenails properly. Every few weeks, trim your toenails to keep them healthy and strong.
Trimming them the wrong way results in ingrown toenails, which can be quite painful. Trim them straight across, rather than trimming the edges into a curve 5. Moisturize your feet. With all the wear and tear your feet experiences, it’s important to moisturize them from time to time. After you’ve soaked your feet, exfoliated your skin and trimmed your nails, use a lotion or cream to protect your skin. Rub it all over the top and bottom of your feet.
DO YOU KNOW... THAT IF YOU MOISTURIZE YOUR FEET EVERY NIGHT WITH SHEER BUTTER BEFORE GOING TO BED, YOUR FEET WILL REMAIN SOFT IN NATURE.
