PREGNANCY @ 3 MONTHS AFTER DELIVERY I gave birth last month and I lost the baby ten days after. It was a breeched baby. Please can I conceive next month? Aisha, Suleja
the loss. If you get pregnant three months after it will not matter much especially since it is not following a Caesarean section.
I empathize with you concerning the loss of the baby. Usually breech delivery caries a higher risk of morbidity and mortality and that is why quite a number of obstetricians opt for Caesarean section for breech presentation. Though in your case I do not have sufficient information to know whether the death was from labour related events or other causes. I usually advise women to wait for six months to allow for full recovery but in this ceanerio it is sometimes difficult to wait long. Earlier pregnancy than six months help to overcome the psychological impact of
WHAT ELSE CAN I DO? I am James from Benin, in May 2015, I experienced itching on my private part and all over my body. Also waist, testicular and abdominal pains with noises in my stomach. There was rashes on my private part, sore anus and testicles. My throat was swollen with weight loss. I did urine m/c/s , it revealed pus cells +++, yeast cells +, epithelial cell ++, RBC+ . The culture yielded heavy growth of E. Coli, and candida albican. I was treated and went for a repeat Urine m/c/s after six months and it yielded staphylococcus aureus. I have been given treatment but no response. I also did blood culture and there was heavy growth. Please as a Gynaecologist what is your advice? James from Benin. From your description above the problem is multisystemic and therefore not likely to be a simple case of Gynaecological or urological problem alone. This more of a generalized infection. What is your HIV status? Any other form of immunosuppression apart from HIV? What you need to do is to go to medical outpatient department to be fully checked and examined. All these affecting the throat, abdomen, testicles and other places can be linked together. Specifically concerning the tests that was done and repeated after six months, was your sexual partner or partners treated too? This is one mistake a lot of men and women make. Always remember that anytime sexually transmitted disease or urinary tract infection is treated the other sexual partner or partners should be treated to avoid re infection.
HIV POSITIVE WITH ITCHES AND RASHES I have been having itches in my anus and on the surface, itches in between in between my bombom bone and boils at times . Please what medicine can I buy? I am an HIV patient. Regina from Nyanya Abuja Because of immuno-suppression in HIV patient they are actually prone to a lot of opportunistic infections. You will need to be screened for helminthiasis by doing stool microscopy and also highl vagina swab. Anti helminthiasis and Antibiotics may be required too.
Sperm-like Discharge My wife is experiencing some whitish discharge coming from her private part and sometimes it comes like sperm it is more thicker than sperm. What can we do ? Please I need your help. Magaji from Jos Was there any associated itching? What she is likely to have is vaginal candidiasis. Well what you need to do is to take her to your family physician or Gynaecologist for examination and tests. Most likely antifungal will be all that is needed.

Revamping old furniture By UCHE EZE ic Change the fabric: this option is for fabric furniture. Get a beautiful fabric; could be a new one or an old fabric in your home. Get rid of the old fabric and cover up the furniture with a new and attractive fabric. Repurpose the furniture: tweak things a little. Just because the piece of furniture wass initially used as a wardrobe, doesn’t mean you can’t change it into a bookshelf. Think of something else to use this furniture for. Changing the location is also a good idea, with that, visitors will have a hard time recognising the furniture. With additional information from the internet

O
ld and rickety furniture can be very unsightly, but that doesn’t mean it should be immediately thrown out. Most times, what that furniture needs is just a little touch up. Instead of completely disposing of that piece of furniture, think of a way to redo and refurbish it to suit your home décor. Simply look for any faults and get them fixed. Apart from the creative angle to revamping furniture, it’s also a way of making financial cut backs. Taking old furniture and turning it into something new and unique gives some sort of satisfaction. So, before you throw out that old furniture, take a moment to think creatively on how to make it look brand new. Hopefully, these easy steps will assist you on your creative journey. Think of a way it can fit into the home design: First, it is important to carefully think of how best to incorporate this furniture into your already existing design. Once you have thought of a way it could be used, then you can get into the makeover, knowing exactly what you want. Paint: fresh paint has magic powers. Once new paint is applied to a furniture piece, it instantly looks brand new. Go ahead and repaint that old furniture and see how it comes back to life.
Personalising your office space By UCHE EZE
M
ost people spend most part of their day at the office, therefore it is important to make your office space comfortable. This can be done by giving your office space a personal touch. A creatively decorated work place tends to aid effective output. In addition to that, it’s rewarding to have some sense of control over your environment, surrounding yourself with familiar things. Feeling comfortable and free to express yourself at work can lead to other great results as you get through your day. Note that it is important to find a balance between expressing yourself and maintaining a professional appearance. Remember that it is a workplace, with other employees and various individuals. While giving your office space a
personal touch, avoiding elaborate decorations as these may distract other office users. Find your personal style: Make your office space a familiar environment with things like family photographs, cards, clipart and the likes of them; your favourite plants and flowers could also work. Remember to choose personalising items wisely, avoiding anything that might offend a co-worker, a client or customer. And, be sure to leave enough space on your desk to work comfortably. Make it more comfortable: Surroundyourselfwiththings that can make work easier for you, while beautifying your workplace. Things like file holders, pen holders and desk organisers can help you work faster, while adding
a personal look to your desk. Include a beautiful chair cushion to make sitting more comfortable and your space stylish. Keep it simple: Keep in mind that while personalising your space is important, too much clutter may make it difficult for you to work or give the impression that you are disorganised. Start with a few small personal touches and see how you like the changes. If you want to add more things, consider removing an item or two to avoid cluttering up your space. And don’t overdo the décor. With additional information from the internet

HALIMA IDRIS //
Making a change in society through creative arts Interview by MARYAM AHMADU-SUKA, (KADUNA)
H
ajiya Halima Idris is the Special Assistant to the Kaduna State governor on Creative Arts. She is the first born of four children - three girls and a boy. She is from Daura in Katsina State but has lived all her life in Kaduna State. Education I attended Kaduna Capital School for my primary education in the 1990’s and then Federal Government Girls College (FGGC) Bakori before I got admission into the University of Abuja for my Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration in 2001. About Arewa Creative Industry The history of Arewa Creative Industry stated during the campaign period of Malam Nasir el-Rufai where I meet with a lot of young, talented people but it has always been my passion to work and make a change in the society. This is because I feel most of the people in the creative industry are not being encouraged and embraced by the northern culture. So I developed an interest to find out why most creative youth that can make positive impact in the society end up being a nuisance to the society. I did my research and set up an NGO called the Arewa Creative Industry. The NGO has between 60 to 70 members from different sectors of the creative industry; we have fashion designers, models, musicians, actors etc. We organised the first Sallah show which brought in a lot of creative talents from p ojject, pr all over the country. After the project, I was appointed SA on Creative Arts and Development to the Kaduna Sta State governor. Being SA Creative Arts is a lot of work. Most people don’t know how big the industry is because when you talk about creativity you are talking about every person that uses his mind or hand to make something beautiful, either in the art, performing art or visual art. My passion for creative arts I never went to school to study creative arts. I believe when you have the passion for something it’s different from when you were forced to go g and learn it. I can’t describe my passi passion for creative arts, an and I can’t ssee myself workin working
CO V E R
anywhere away from creative people. By nature I am very creative; from what you see in my house, office and the way I dress. I am a very artistic and classic person. I derive a lot of joy working with creative people and being creative. Growing up Growing up was beautiful. Then, I didn’t think there were many people but I know we usually got scared of neighbours. You know, you are always scared of somebody who knows your father or your mother and you always try to be of good behaviour around them. There was always that bond between your primary school mates or Islamiyya school mates; you always looked forward to go to school because the beauty of walking with friends was a memorable one. This is something our kids these days are missing out on. I loved my growing up days in Malali; there was always a bond between families. Challenges I will talk about the personal challenges I have faced, one of them is that I still don’t know how to be diplomatic; I am a very straightforward, blunt and honest person. I will tell you how it is, which is something that the society is not really comfortable with. I am not an advocate of telling you what you want to hear but I will tell you as it is but find a way of making you feel good. Career wise, most people think because I am a women I face a lot of challenges, but to tell you the truth I don’t think it is a problem. Sometimes if you are a woman and you do something different, people tend to look into what you are doing more that if it’s a man.Had it been a man running my office I don’t think most people will give him that attention and try to understand him. Most challenging is that the society doesn’t really embrace creativity. You try as much as possible to tell the people in the creative industry to do better but because of that thing the society is not giving them, most of them don’t see the future in whatever they are doing. The society has to understand that, we can’t keep pushing them around as this will not get them close but rather push them away towards drugs. I am trying to make a life for these people, I am trying to make them understand they can make their own living without depending on anybody. The creative arts industry has a lot of money that has been untapped. America is getting a lot of money from Hollywood, India has Bollywood and it is one of the biggest revenue generating avenues for these countries. But in Nigeria it’s not the case. Aspirations as a child I have always aspired to bring about a change in the society. I have done a lot of things in my life(in business) but I have always known that something was missing. I believe I can make a change in the society and I am glad I have started to do that. Fond childhood memories I had a very nice childhood with my father; he was a perfect role model. Most times I think of what he has told me. Sometime he doesn’t just let me do things the way I want, he tells me that in life I have to learn. As a mother now, I know that what he thought me was actually all about facing reality. I was a daddy’s girl because I was freer with my dad than I was with my mum. I always looked up to my dad (Alhaji BB Yusuf). Joys of motherhood I have three children, two boys and a girl, they are all different, the first born loves his father very well, the second a girl balances between the two of us so you never know where she stands. I think she is smart and diplomatic, but the last boy I know he is for me, he is always about his mother. Raising children that are different in thinking, different in character and everything is one of the joys of being a mother. Most cherished gift I think that apart from the fact that God gave me three beautiful children I am always proud of one of the best gifts I have ever received is being appointed S. A. Creative arts in Kaduna State. I think the best gift is for the governor of Kaduna State to have given me the opportunity to make a change in the creative industry. I also cherish my husband giving me very unique cars. I am always proud of them and I know any time he is giving me a car I know it’s going to be the only one around. The first was a Ford and the second a Chevrolet, they were all unique cars I had hardly seen anywhere in Nigeria. Favorite fashion accessories I don’t compromise on shoes, so I always have very beautiful shoes that will match the activity or the event I am going to. I love veils, I tie my veils in a particular way and I also love wrist watches and rings. How I met my husband My husband and I are related, we are related on both sides of the family, he is related to my father and also my mother. He is a cousin to my father through his mother and he is a cousin to my maternal grandmother. Most cherished attribute of his He is well organised, he makes sure everything of his is kept well; he does that himself. He is very patient - his patience overshadows mine. He is a father I know is very rare to find around most Hausa homes. He is very
I ALSO CHERISH MY HUSBAND GIVING ME VERY UNIQUE CARS. I AM ALWAYS PROUD OF THEM AND I KNOW ANY TIME HE IS GIVING ME A CAR I KNOW GOING TO BE IT’S GO ONLY ONE THE ON AROUND AROUN

CO V E R // HALIMA IDRIS I’M NOT REALLY A SPORTS PERSON BECAUSE I DON’T LIKE ANYTHING THAT MAKES ME ANXIOUS; I HATE ANXIETY SO I KEEP AWAY FROM SPORTS. I close to his children; they talk to him about everything. He doesn’t judge them which is one thing that most homes lack.We have 13 children in the house and even grandchildren, he has two daughters that are married and a son that is getting married soon, my kids are youngest in the house. Favourite travel destination I have been to so many places in world, I cherish Mauritius and Zanzibar but I still think the best place I have ever loved and I still love is South Africa. I have never been to any place I feel more at home like South Africa because the world there is different. How I relax Most times when I want to relax, I read, I love to read a lot. I also watch a lot of family series and movies. Last good book I read Because I am Muslim, I have read a lot of books mostly friction, but there is one book I love a lot which is Umar Bin Khattab, one of the Khalifa’s of the prophet (SAW). Why I love the book is because reading that book, I got to know a lot of people that I was reading about; I got to understand the roles they played during the prophet’s time. This is one book I cherish and till date I have not been able to finish it because every time I come to read it, I have to start from the beginning again because it contains a lot of thing about me. the history of Islam during the prophet’s time. Favourite food and drink not I am a typical Nigerian person and I cannot igerian. sacrifice my Nigerian food. I eat anything Nigerian. I don’t have a particular food or drink I like. I don’t really like sweet things, even though I take coke n. sometimes, but I am more of a water person. Style stic and I love to represent Nigeria, I am very artistic a so most I love the world to know more about Nigeria resents times I just use Ankara fabric because it represents Africa. Anywhere I go in world I make sure I am fully dressed in Ankara which people admire on me and want to have it. Favourite fashion designer I work with fashion designers a lot; trust me I ou don’t have a favourite fashion designer. If you have something good, I will love it. I wear it ade anywhere I go and be proud to say it was made by this person. Favourite perfume, bags, shoes s. I love to be unique, so I just mix perfumes. I buy perfumes that smell good not mindingg the designer. For bags, any kind of good bagg will do. I am a lover of heels. Shoes are my favorite, I cannot go wrong with shoes. Mum’s advice that stuck Both my parents have played different d roles in my life. One thing I think I inherited from them is their generosity. They always ou, told us that if you are selfish, it’s all about you, an God will leave you to yourself to see if you can solve your problems, but the more you give er to other people or the more you change other people’s lives, the better for you. Advice for women I feel women should give more to their n, homes, give more attention to their children, husbands and if you can help financially in your house. Don’t think that everything is on the shoulders of the man alone. A woman can contribute; it is not a sin for a woman to contribute to the development of her family financially. Favourite sport, weather, car, colour I’m not really a sports person because I don’t like anything that makes me anxious; I hate anxiety so I keep away from sports. I love the raining season. For best car, a beautiful

and unique car that t is not everywhere. My favourite colo co lou ur used d to to be be brown but not anymore, now I colour experiment colo colours. Favourite day of the week and why I love Saturda Saturdays and Sundays, because I can sleep for as long as I want withouthaving to worry about being late to t work. Secre Secret to looking glam I guess gue I inherited it. I remember g my grandmother died at the age of 80-s 80-something years but she was looking very beautiful, so I think it runs in my fa family because I am not the sort of p person that goes out of her way to go on a full beauty spa and all that. I am more o a natural person when it comes to of t things like that. What I would tell a younger me Life teaches you lessons, so e everything comes with time, you cannot jump from one age to another because you want to learn. So I think a younger me has to just wait for the right time to do other things. First and last App I check everyday Instagram Favorite music I don’t have a particular one, but I love Hausa songs and Michael Jackson, he is one person I can listen to and not get bored. I also listen to a few Arabic musicians. What I won’t be caught wearing I can’t be seen outside not dressed like a proper northerner, no matter what I am wearing, maybe jeans, I must always have a veil covering.

Setting up a dressing corner for the kids
G
etting a corner for your kids to dress up isn’t such a bad idea. But ensuring that it is well organized is key. Kids have a load of clothes and sorting them our appropriately is important. Not only does this ease the problem of sorting out clothes at the last minute, it also teaches the kids about tidiness and coordination. Choose bright and colourful shades preferably your child’s favourite for the storage space and at a height that your kid can reach. Also, try and consider what your kid likes since the space is for them not you. Keep the most worn clothes at closer reach and not deep within the dressing corner. For the clothes that wrinkle quickly, hand them instead of folding them. Teach them to clean up after dressing up.
Pick up clothes from the floor and a folding habit. Sometimes give them the flexibility of picking out their own outfits without your help. It helps build individuality and self dependence. With additional information from the internet

Treat yourself to a delicious plate of Akidi Stories by UCHE EZE Akidi is a delicacy that originated from the eastern part of Nigeria. Akidi is simply a combination of black beans and yam, with vegetables. It is high in protein and vitamins. This meal is appealing to the eyes, tasty and of course has a lot of health benefits. INGREDIENTS 1¼ pounds yams, peeled, cut into ¼-inch cubes 1 medium onion 1 medium bell pepper (atarodo) 1 tablespoon minced garlic (3-4 cloves) 2 cups coarsely chopped greens (such as kale, collard greens, or chard) 1½ cups cooked black beans (drained and rinsed) 1 cup spinach leaves 1 avocado (optional) Seasoning
PREPARATION Set a pot of water on fire, pour black beans into the pot and cook until soft. When the beans is cooked, drain water and rinse. Place the yams into a pot with enough water to cover. Bring to a boil and cook for about 10 minutes, until the yams are tender. Drain, rinse with cold water, and set aside. Heat a frying pan on high heat, and add 1 tablespoon of water. When the water starts to sputter, add the onion and bell pepper. Cook stirring for 3-5 minutes, adding a little water as needed, until onions and peppers soften. Stir in the garlic and greens (adding water as needed), and cook 2-3 minutes or until the greens have softened. Mix the cooked beans, yams and vegetables in a large pot, add seasoning and cook on low heat for about 3-5 minutes. Serve immediately with avocado paste (optional).

The benefits of dry body brushing By HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU
D
ry body scrubbing is an ancient beauty technique that recently came to light for the newer generation of beauticians. It involves using a dry brush to scrub your skin. It is a simple and easy technique for women who are trying to achieve soft, smooth and toned out skin. With creams and lotions sold at ridiculous prices, dry body brushing will do the trick that your lotions have failed to do. While overall improving the look and appearance of your skin, it also helps give your organs a boost too. Take a look at the amazing benefits that dry skin brushing will give to you. Dry body brushing exfoliates and brushes away dry skin cells. You will immediately see results with smoother and brighter skin It also increases blood flow and improves circulation which in turn gives tighter and firmer skin without breaking the bank of toners. Continued dry body scrubbing will eliminate the appearance of cellulite by evenly distributing the fat in the layers of your skin. Skin brushing also stimulates hormones and oil glands. The skin is the largest organ of your body and does a lot of work. Doing this often can help toxins escape more easily and keep you healthier too. Dry skin brushing is very rejuvenating and addictive too because of how good it feels. Doing it every morning is quite ideal. It also helps your skin breathe easier by eliminating clogged pores and opening them up from trapped dirt and sweat. Healthy skin is a healthy you.

osewater comes from, as implied, the petals of roses and is highly beneficial when included in your beauty routine. It softens, heals and gives you a natural and healthy glow. Some of its common beauty uses include: As a facial toner: Most toners have harmful chemicals and alcohol and using them often can dry out your skin. Using rose water instead will naturally tone up your skin and take care of your pores, giving a rosy scent at the same time. As an after sun body spray: It can also be used to treat skin rashes caused by sun burn and help heal the burns too because of the calming

effect it has on the skin. In creams and lotions: Rosewater is highly moisturizing. You can simply add a few drops to your moisturizer or cream before applying it to your body. As a cleanser: It lifts the dirt trapped in the pores of your skin which can lead to breakouts. Make your own cleanser or buy one with rosewater and use it as your everyday cleanser. For acne: Rosewatercan be used to treat acne too. It has antibacterial properties which also fade scars and other blemishes like blackheads, whiteheads and pimples.
