“I’ve never seen elegance go out of style.” – Sonya Teclai

ZAINAB ABDULLAHI MUSA Educational background I attended primary school in Sokoto from where I proceeded to FGGC Bakori in Katsina State where I obtained my WAEC certificate in the year 1990. After that, I had my first degree in Law from the Usman Danfodio University in Sokoto in 1997, after which I left Sokoto for my National Youth Service in Abuja in the year 1998. While doing my youth service, I enrolled into the International Institute of Journalism (IIJ) and obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in 1999. Immediately after my graduation from IIJ and just before I passed out from the youth service, we were called to the Nigerian Law School to begin preparing for our bar exams. It was a bit hectic trying to juggle the procedures of my PGD graduation, tying the loose ends of my youth service and registering at the Nigerian Law School, all at the same time; but it was hectic fun at the same time. In 2011, my whole family packed our bags and relocated to Dubai in the UAE to enable my husband and I pursue our two years Masters degrees. Unfortunately, my husband was recalled to his office and I suddenly found myself a single mother of four in a foreign land, pursuing a degree in a totally different environment from what I was used to. AlhamdulilLah: that experience made me a better person and I graduated with a Masters degree in Applied Psychology, with emphasis in Criminal Psychology, from the Middlesex University in 2013. Career background I am a lawyer by profession and although I love the prosecution part of my career (civil law bores me), my personal real interest is people and what makes them tick. I especially love looking into the minds of criminals and deciphering their motives and intentions. It was what motivated my choice of Psychology for a Masters degree. What was growing up like? Growing up was fun, fun, fun! My father was and still iss the coolest father in the world. He loves es his children to bits. He can sacrifice everything ything he has just to make us happy, and d I honestly don’t know what life would have ve been like with a different father. Making a difference through law and psychology Interview by HAFSAH ABUBAKAR MATAZU

Zainab Abdullahi Musa is an indigene of Jega Local Government Area in Kebbi State although her family has always been permanently resident in Sokoto Town. She is in her 40’s now and the first born in a family of four. She has two younger brothers; Musa and Kabiru, and a sister, Fatima. Her parents have been married for over 45 years and they are still going strong; AlhamdulilLah. Her father is a retired Federal Permanent Secretary whose last official assignment was as the Federal Commissioner representing Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states at the Federal Civil Service Commission. A very hardworking man whose passion has always been to do his job very well and give chances to those who have no ‘godfather’ in the system. In her words, ‘he is also the only person who would rummage through the pile of applications on his table, find deserving candidates from the trenches whom he has never heard of and drive all the way to their villages to personally give them their offer letters!’ and for think you are not doing enough to deserve their appreciation. So it’s a thankless job really. Personally, my biggest challenge in life is in keeping my oath to Allah to be the best mother, daughter, wife, sister and friend to the people in my life: regularly striking that balance between being selfishly human (and serving my own interest) and being the best of what I ought to be to those around me. constantly aware of people’s I am rights over me and I try not to trample on them. Life lessons That people never really change; at least not completely. We recently had our 25th high school reunion and I was

pleasantly surprised to find that none of us had really changed. Sure, we have all grown up and become more mature in the way we handle things but the building blocks remain the same really. Aspirations growing up I have always wanted to be a lawyer and to write a book. I have done one, insha Allah, I will do the other soon. What fond childhood memories do you y miss? My life as a child, visiting Pankshin in Plateau State and spending the whole P day d with my cousins and friends on the mountains picking all sorts of fruits. m My M grandparents all settled there and my m best memories are of visiting them and being free in those mountains. a I am sad that my own children can’t have that experience now being that h all a my family have left Plateau State following incessant religious clashes. f Joys of motherhood My ultimate joy comes from watching my children grow into these w

asting during the month of Ramadan aims to harness humility and chastity and also submit ourselves to God like we haven’t before. And although it has been ordained that the sick do not have to fast, missing out on such reward that comes with fasting can be hard. ant for Therefore, it is important those with illnesses like diabetes ake to be extra careful and take ure certain measures to ensure out that they fast safely without d stressing their bodies and causing any unwanted complications. Dr. Amadi Ikechukwu of Federal Staff Hospital Abuja, gave his advice on what is expected from a diabetic patient that is fasting. e It is important to make sure your blood is tested re as often as possible, more od than you usually do. Blood m low to sugar can fluctuate from high during Ramadan more than

it tends to. So keep your testing kit close by always. Also, the food you eat when breaking the fast and suhur too shouldn’t be underestimated. While carbohydrates are good for replenishing energy, it is equally bad for sugar levels. So, taking

starchy foods like brown rice and whole wheat bread are better options to keep things in check. Sweet tasting foods are popular when breaking the fast but needless to say they are bad for you. So even if you choose to indulge in these desserts; take them in moderation and controlled amounts. Protein like nuts, beans, fish Proteins and other othe ot he kinds of meat are and excelle sources of energy excellent alt as alternatives to all those star starchy foods. So enjoy eat these as much as eating yo like for the more you en energy you get for the fo following day, the better. And lastly, it is a advisable to see your do doctor so he/she can ad advise you on your med medication, and if there are e any extra measures you need to take. What you should be eating for Sahur for a productive day

P

lanning what you eat during suhur can make your day a lot easier. The energy from the foods you eat will be enough for you to get through the day’s fasting and in turn, give you an extra productive day. Dr. Amadi Ikechukwu of Federal Staff Hospital Abuja emphasised on how essential it is that you include foods that contain slow energy-releasing nutrients which are mostly found in grains, fruits and vegetables which will give you the kick-start you need. Oats: It is a good option because it boosts your metabolism. For an extra drive, add some nuts or fresh fruits, replacing your conventional dairy milk with soy or almond will give you that extra protein and calcium too. Smoothies: For those with minimal time on their hands in the morning, then a smoothie is your answer. Blending your favourite fruits with some yoghurt or milk and a handful of sunflower seeds promises a mix of vitamins, minerals, protein and fibre too. It is an excellent energy booster and curbs the hunger too. Whole wheat bread: You can eat this with some

jam, peanut butter or if you’re a fan of toast then why not? You can also choose to have your bread with an egg for protein and a cup of juice. Meat: Protein is important and including veggies in the mix is an even better idea. So how about a stir fry with ingredients: iftar leftovers or a salad, whichever you prefer. Water: Hydration is highly important. Thirst is bad. So drinking few glasses between iftar and suhur in reasonable quantities ought to do the trick to keep the thirst at bay during the day. Also try to stay away from caffeinated drinks too.

Child-friendly wristwatches By UCHE EZE

For younger kids, you could go for cartoon themed wristwatch, maybe even a dummy, as this is just for the fun of it. Just ensure that the wristwatch isn’t tightly bound to the child’s wrist. On the other hand, older kids should be given real wristwatches; for timetelling sake. Get them a variety of colours to match their outfits as this will interest them.

e all know watches are a cool fashion statement, kids included. Aside that, they are also an educational material for kids. They teach them time awareness and punctuality. With the emergence of cell phones, parents no longer pay attention to wristwatches for kids, instead they just get them cell phones.

Teaching your kids to seize the morning in worship A

s a parent you should be ready to raise your kids right and with the strongest religious compass right from a young age. Morning prayers and worship are crucial and beneficial; and teaching them this is something that will stick with them for life and, therefore, the importance of it should not be underestimated. Malam Usman Muhammad from Zaria said that it is as simple as creating a routine and ensuring you stick to it. Prayers are when one connects with God and the kids should be made to understand it. Sparing a few minutes of sleep to worship and supplicate further reminds your

kids the importance of religion. Teaching them your ways and what is expected of them in the morning is something that will stick once it is placed there. But most importantly, be a role model to your young ones. Teach them what they see you do. It will only make the learning process easier. With this being said, making sure they grow up with the habit of making the best of the early hours of the morning will in turn increase the blessings and good that enters your home and theirs too one day. Once the habit is made, your kids will thank you for it and their blessings will magnify.
